I apologize lovelies, I think the last few days are finally catching up to me so I'm going make this short tonight. HOWEVER, I WILL SAY -- I saw so much Safe Space Ship today and it warmed my heart so much. So many of you are reaching out to crew-mates and giving encouragement and I'm so very proud of you <3. Seriously, I don't know of a better fandom out there (and I've been in a quite a few in my day) where there has been so much acceptance and support. I know we're all struggling a bit with disagreements/concerns over renewal efforts, but you all are still just out there giving love left and right. You really are just the most amazing group of individuals and I'm so honoured to be here with you. The title card at the beginning of ofmd s2 ep5, The Curse of the Seafaring life, where the title is written in blood that’s being scrubbed away by a disembodied hand, makes me soooooo crazy. It’s so perfect. It wonderfully captures the thematic core of the episode. Episode 5 is the washing the blood away episode. it’s the episode where our characters just kind of chill, reconcile, rebuild themselves after the kraken incident. So of course the title is blood being washed away. Ed’s arc in the episode is washing the metaphorical blood off his hands as he tries to reintegrate himself into the crew. Lucius is moving on, trying to quit picking his scabs for a change…washing the blood away. Izzy is whittling sharks. 10/10 no notes.

ofmd s2e3 rewatch where i pause to jot down my thoughts and other random shit

squeezing this one in riiiiight before the next two eps drop lol. anyway these posts are about me processing these episodes and if you want to read them then that's cool too. but fair warning this is gonna be a fucking mess.

s2e1, s2e2, s2e3, s2e4, s2e5, s2e6, s2e7, s2e8

show opens on zheng leading a raid and INTERESTINGLY ENOUGH. this might be the first time we've seen a raid where like. the background music is kinda moody. and what's odd is that it has like the same level of comedically over-the-top violence and characters just having a casual conversation as like, the e5 cold open. but there's sad piano and strings doing tremolo in the background. i have no idea what this means.

god. zheng is so fucking hot.

i love olu's "no, no, sorry, bruv." and the FACE HE MAKES AFTER!!! so good

zheng saying "everyone's cracking down on the little guy" makes me wonder if the show is gonna do anything abt how the end of the golden age of piracy was like. a year off. which i only know from reading a few fics where the authors incorporated that into the plot. and there was the one trailer where we see zheng in jackie's bar while stede's giving everyone a speech so yknow what that might be where all this is going. big pirate battle at the end of the season, right?

another thing ive been wondering abt tho is just how much is this show gonna completely fuck with history. because like. is zheng yi sao gonna conquer the fucking caribbean. are we just going completely off the rails re: historical accuracy and inventing entire major historical events?? like crocs and pinocchio and pirates from different historical periods all existing at the same time and in the same place is one thing but if the characters like. overthrow england. then ofmd just straight-up exists in an alternate timeline at that point.

stede "the gentleman pirate kills with kindness" bonnet being so impressed with zheng is so cute to me tho

fhsjkgdhfushl oh my god when zheng snaps her fingers and stede hurries to refill drinks the other captain guy grins and flashes finger guns at stede and this is SO fucking funny to me

zheng being like "noooo it's stupid teehee" tucking her hair behind her ears ALSO very funny to me

whose job was it to make the letter N out of caviar for the title card in this episode bc it looks fantastic. got little serifs and everything

stede taking his towel duties VERY seriously and just. dropping them on zheng's desk for no reason. even olu is like "stede what the fuck are you doing"

obsessed with the running gag of stede being like "i always say that!" and other characters being like "no you fucking dont"

stede having zero impulse control and seeing the abacus and just being like "hey what the hell is this thing" and shaking it around. me too, king.

i wont lie tho part of me wonders if stede like. going overboard with towel duty and messing shit up is on purpose. like is he playing dumb so zheng lets her guard down just in case he needs her to think he's completely helpless?? bc at the end of the episode he does get one over on her and i assume it's partly bc she underestimated him. or am i just reading too much into it lol.

but idk it's weird that olu's like "ok stede zheng is busy" and stede's just like "im gonna shake this thing now teehee"

WAIT ALSO backtracking a bit. why were stede and olu shadowing zheng at the beginning of the episode. i mean olu i get, it's bc she has a crush on him (who can blame her) but what's the in-universe justification for zheng being like "yeah alright white boy u can come too"

stede's gay little run out of the room. GO GET YOUR MAN!!!!

awww the crew all look so sad at how messed up the ship is :( THAT'S THEIR HOME!!!

I KNEW THE GNOSSIENNE NO. 5 WAS GONNA KILL ME WHEN IT SHOWED UP IN S2 BUT THIS WAS TOO FUCKING MUCH. THE WAY IT TRAILS OFF AND WE JUST HEAR THE WIND ECHOING. FUCKINGGGGG CLAWING AT MY EYES

i love that there's knife stuck in the painting guy's dick. stupid gags like that never get old. also if that was izzy it's extra funny like what the fuck did he even do that for

also have we ever actually seen the outside of the door to stede's cabin like this before??? we saw those dutch guys get chased down this hallway but idk about. the door.

the crew is too busy feasting on raw bird like they're extras in a zombie film to hear stede calling for ed. love that.

the two people that the camera focuses on individually are jim and izzy. makes sense bc these are the characters who i think are gonna have the most important shit going on re: the fact that they all tried to kill ed.

stede's painfully awkward smile after "um... hi." i mean honestly tho what the fuck else do you say to walking in on this

oh shit jim was totally about to tell stede what happened tho. and then archie interrupted with "oh shit, you're stede?????"

this must be so fucking funny from archie's perspective tho. must've heard so much abt this guy and now she finally gets to meet the main character of the story she stumbled into about a third of the way through. and he's kinda just some blond guy.

stede sounds so defensive too tho when archie's like "i thought you'd be taller, charismatic, muscly" bc god that's exactly what he thinks he should be. i mean ok stede is charismatic in a very unique way but his whole e1 fantasy of having a beard and being all macho and badass was just putting all his insecurities on blast. and now archie is like "this is the guy blackbeard was so fucked up over?? really????"

shoutout to archie saying "got tired" when theyre all saying ed retired

also why was wee john in this shot. like not even just in the shot he's just sitting RIGHT behind stede listening to the whole thing. he doesn't have a single line.

stede rolling his eyes and ignoring izzy is so good. yes king dont take the bait

oh ok wee john was there so that we can see frenchie go over to him and give him a fist bump in the background while stede walks away to stare off into the distance

also when did jim see archie's boobs tho. like ok realistically they've seen each other in varying stages of undress just bc it's not that big of a ship and there's only so much privacy. but the funnier answer is that after ed kicked them out of the secret room and a few minutes later a gunshot went off (who did the rest of the crew think pulled the trigger, i wonder) and they think izzy's dead probably. and then jim and archie decided this was a good time to hook up.

wait i forgot abt the nebulous amount of time between the mutiny and stede walking in on them all eating a dead bird. who fucking knows how much time that was tho. but they could've hooked up then i guess

the song gets to play out more in this scene and ohhhh baby i missed this piano piece. also stede looks more annoyed than upset. he's just casually yoinking things out of the wall. and then he sees the ones on the ceiling and is like "really, ed?"

i think i said this in the tags of a gifset but izzy says "don't cry, bonnet" when stede's back is to him and i just think it's funny bc stede literally wasnt crying. he just looked kinda pissed off. izzy continues to not understand ed or stede even a little bit.

also i love how the music changes by just playing a minor chord and then there's like a spooky echo and then. no more background music.

i just realized izzy's crutch is literally just a mop he's holding upside down. this is funny to me for some reason

also ive heard that apparently ppl think he did this to spare stede or something but 1. why would he not want to specifically torture stede as much as possible 2. this is literally not sparing stede bc stede would spend the rest of his life scouring the entire caribbean hoping to find the island where they dropped ed.

RANDOM fucking idea tho but what if they did maroon him but it was on the island from 1x02. that wouldve been great for ed probably. get therapy from the old guy. have some coconut rum drink. chill out. oh well instead they shoved ed into a secret closet and left him there to die from a traumatic head injury.

hornigold calling ed "bro" was such a dead giveaway for me that this was a dream sequence or whatever. like from trailers and stuff i had already figured that this guy was hornigold and that he was probably a ghost or something but i think i mightve been questioning it a little bit at this point. but yeah anyway ed says "bro" and while obviously we dont know exactly what hornigold was like, he didnt sound like the kind of guy to say "bro"

i do love how hornigold's like "you worried you're insane?" and ed's just like "yeah a little bit!"

wait stede told zheng that they marooned ed. and then zheng is like "well it's at least mutiny-adjacent" like no im pretty sure that's literally just a regular mutiny

ed is so fucking stressed abt being in the gravy basket. poor man is nervously playing with the big stick and trying so hard not to lose his cool.

oh boy okay. ed got yanked off the cliff. stede is heading into the secret room. idk if i even have anything to say about the mermaid sequence like i cant believe this shit is real. fuck. this is a fever dream. they really just... wrote this. filmed it. put rhys darby in a fish tail. FUCK

ok the two things i have to say about this. first: the fucking flashback montage in this sequence makes me stop breathing like every single fucking time. secondly: when theyre face-to-face in ed's mermaid fantasy there's a split second where ed sort of jolts forward a tiny tiny tiny half of an inch. and i have no idea if it's intentional. but it makes me think of how in the "you wear fine things well" scene ed TOTALLY STEPS IN THINKING STEDE'S ABOUT TO KISS HIM.

Itssssss S2 release day!!!!! You all know the drill- I will be using this post for my live reaction to OFMD so spoilers ahead!

EDIT 1: I am literally bouncing up and down while watching the recap EDIT 2: I literally avoided all spoilers so Stede and Izzy fighting is so weird- this has to be a dream... the only two squares i thought were guaranteed going to happen were 1) BB breakup crew leather outfits and 2) another cliffhanger ending. idk it just felt inevitable. otherwise this entire season was a wild ride

i wrote "jim becomes lucius" in the sense of turning into the New Relationship Advisor-- i imagined them talking to ed about stede or whatever, NOT them telling izzy he's in an unhealthy relationship 0_o

i feel fucking terrible for putting "izzy hands smackdown" now 😭😭 because i was expecting a fair fight that he loses, NOT, like, the entire fucking season.

stede's shitty pirate disguise was inspired by the fic #gentlebeard is trending! by regional_catastrophe because that fic was funny as hell

even though i knew about zheng yi sao before geting into ofmd, i just didn't think we would get a major asian character (lucius voice: the bar is on the floor). except i'm kinda iffy on her relation to the plot so idk. diversity win? the asian character is less of a character than a plot device? :/

^ my real dream come true would've been a filipino character played by a filipino actor but that almost never happens

izzy telling ed he loves him was nice.

re: word of mouth gay izzy confirmation. i thought it would be funny if he looked into the camera and straight up said "i'm gay" because half of this fandom wouldn't be able to recognize him as an older gay man without him doing so LOL. confessing to his captain is close enough

DRAG!! that was super fun at least. wee john and izzy were so gorgeous.

the torture scene?!?! that was my throwaway square, the whump fodder square, the absolutely 0% chance of it happening square. it should've been longer but that's because i'm sexualizing it. i'm not sorry.

i don't have much to say on izzy's death that wasn't already said in the 24 hours after ep8 aired. this was the one thing that i seriously, genuinely didn't think they would do. i put that square in for a laugh (the same way ed cuts off people's toes, i guess). "con said the show is kind," i thought, "there's no way they would do major character death in the pirate romcom." oh how i was wrong.

ok GREAT question sorry it took me a minute to answer. here are some ideas because I'm really extra:

I'll put the text below the cut in case those are hard to read

A choppy ocean, camera in and out of waves, night, dark, splashing, gasping breaths as Lucius’ head breaches the surface. He’s shaking and spluttering, frantically thrashing, looking around horizon, sees nothing, starts panicking, cursing, very dangerous feeling, quick cuts. Then, he sees a dinghy with a few occupants at the very edge of the horizon and starts screaming for help and stede’s voice screams back “Lucius? Is that you?” and lucius deadpans “you’ve GOT to be kidding me” and, as a bonus, a sopping wet red handkerchief smacks into the side of his head as he “what the FUCK” cut to some of stede’s old stuff as flotsam in the ocean, spelling the title card

Very similar mary monologue from e10, talking about the joys of being a widow for the second time, how free she is to love doug, how now the kids know and can talk about it openly, everyones happier. “The one thing they don’t tell you, though, is how often your dead spouse turns up at your door” as she opens the front door to stede standing in the pouring rain, barely holding his hand over his face to conceal himself with the swede, olu, buttons, wee john, black pete, and roach all crowding around behind him, looking around nervously as he smiles and goes “there’s been a bit of a situation” then cut to an extended sweeping pan of all the pirates spread out around the house with maps and books open, mary bent over a plan being written by stede, offering notes as doug serves tea to the crew, alma and louis running around playing with some of them, asking about pirate stuff, zoom to one of the pages spread across the table that reads “our flag means death”

Spin on that ^ but the monologue ends with something like “though I could use fewer men showing up in my living room” and it’s blackbeard, looking like absolute shit, dramatically stepping into the candlelight to reveal the scruffy beard, the makeup, “the widow bonnet, I presume?” “you’ve heard of me” “oh I’ve heard all about you” parallel. He has izzy/fang/ivan/etc watching the kids and doug, has a chat with Mary about stede’s death, series of miscommunications, finally they’re on the same page about stede not really being dead, being on his way back to some “ed” guy he loves, they work everything out, become kind of friendly and she’s like “your names not really blackbeard though, right?” and he says “heh, suppose not, no. I’m Ed” as he leans forward to shake her hand and her eyes widen, fancy classical violin music as “our flag means death” is spelling in the tea spilled from her dropping her cup in shock

Another parallel im sorry (insert the girls when theyre finding parallels meme), izzy rant of “its been almost a fortnight since blackbeard returned, and I’m beginning to believe stede bonnet may have been more of an asset than he originally appeared” with a horribly indignant growl in his voice, compilation of blackbeard being a real hot mess, throwing things, breaking shit, drunk all the time, burning ships without even getting the loot, breaking into tears in the middle of doing something intimidating, etc. izzy comes in to the old quarters and ed is wrapped in a little cocoon of stede’s finery, wailing, chucks a bottle of rum at izzy and it smashing against his head and he leaves and growls “enough! Ivan! Fang!” and they meet him off to the side and he sighs and goes “find me stede fucking bonnet” as they mutter assent, trails up to the mast, up to the stabbing heart flag, new flag under that says “our flag means death”

Phase Shift - Nyctophobia Book 1, aka that original sci-fi book inspired by my Mr. Sandman stoncy series that I’ve been working on for like 2 years. During 2021 I rewrote it from beginning to end, coming up with a 93k draft. I’m punching up the beginning and adding a few elements to the earlier chapters that I thought of during the later stages of the last draft. I’m still thinking about whether I want to try to get it published or if I just want to put it up on Amazon so you guys can get it earlier. I’ll be asking for beta readers soon!

Inertia - Phase Shift’s sequel. Right now I’m working on plotting out the rewrite of this one. I have an old 130k draft, but it’s going to be completely rewritten to bring it in line with the rewrite of Phase Shift.

Overnight - Magnolia Way book #3, from my 90s polyamory sit-com novella series. I finished a second draft and this one is with beta readers at the moment. If you’d like to volunteer, let me know! I’m also 6k into rewriting the first book and working on a few shorts in this universe for my patreon (which is horribly behind, my apologies!)

Big Bang Sequel - I have 12k that I mostly wrote before I wrote the abovementioned stranger things big bang. It needs to be reworked and better pieced together. Probably looking at 25-30k, E-rated when it’s done.

Trickster - This is a Keys/Antwan Free Guy fic that I’ve been slowly working on, where Antwan tricks Keys into a relationship/soulbond. It’s 6k now. Not sure how long it’s going to get before it’ll be ready to post. E-rated.

Restaurant AU - OFMD my beloved! This is a Stede/Edward modern AU where Edward (Blackbeard) owns a gourmet restaurant on the “wrong side of the tracks” and Stede is the former food critic who wants to help him turn Blackbeard’s around. It’s also for the @julybreakbingo

A/B/O Gifts - Steve is an alpha who’s courting Omega!Nancy. Together they decide to court Omega!Jonathan and get him away from the alpha using him. Currently 5k and E rated.

Byersgrove - Jonathan/Billy sequel to this S2 fic where Jonathan can hear all Billy’s thoughts. Currently 1500 words and E rated.

On Hold

Indentured (working title) - This is an original polyam romance/erotica book that’s fully outlined and I’m 38k into the first draft. I lost steam on this one in the middle (like I usually do, lol). Maybe once I get a few more of my original works in a better state, I’ll come back to this one.

Queer Cozy Mystery (working title) - This is only in the concept phase at the moment, but the MC runs a Bed and Breakfast for his mom, and their permanent resident/tourist attraction is an agoraphobic “medium” who purports to speak to guests’ dead relatives. MC and his former-cop boyfriend need the medium’s help to solve a mystery plaguing the B&B. I like the set up and the characters, I just need to work on the mystery plot of the first book in what’s hopefully going to be a series.

Stoncy soulmates AU (working title) - Steve and Jonathan are soulmates, and Nancy is left ‘mate-less after Barb’s death. I’ve been thinking of it as a S1 AU, but I’ve done so many of those. Maybe it’s a college AU instead. Probably somewhere around 15-20k, but I could be way off, b/c I haven’t done an outline yet.

Through the Wall (working title) - Post-college AU. Steve and Nancy live together, and they hear everything that goes on in their neighbor’s (Jonathan’s) bedroom. This one’s much more fun, so maybe this will be the one I do for the big bang, but no promises!
