Here’s a piece I did back in November. I thought it’d be a fun exercise to recreate this scene in the style of Lichtenstein. I absolutely adore this show.
It’s doooooooooooone! My second piece of OFMD fan art🏴☠️
This one took me two weeks. I took some artistic license with their hair because hair is hard lol. And I could analyze it for flaws forever, but I’m mostly content with the finished product.🥰
I am SO grateful to everyone involved with the making of the show and to every single member of the crew I’ve interacted with so far…thank you so much for welcoming me with open arms and being the very best humans! This community and this show give me so much joy and comfort, and I’m so inspired by all of you every single day.🫶🏼
really love how the women in ofmd are just as weird, gross, conniving, immature, emotional, stupid, complex, badass, toxic, and human as the men. literally the only missteps are no anne/mary kiss and forcibly shaving archie's pits.
Some of the miscommunication between them about their own feelings is, weirdly, a result of Lucius. Lucius is the one who clocks where their relationship is going, and he tells Ed that Stede likes him. He treats Ed leaving with Jack as a breakup, and that's the impression that Ed gets as well. Stede has not apparently put his romantic feelings into words, so when things become undeniable with the kiss, he's still not sure what's really happening between them, while Ed thinks they've been working towards this the entire time.
There's a good argument that Lucius doesn't even get what's going on with Stede. I don't think he knows that Stede hasn't figured out his own sexuality yet, or doesn't understand his feelings for Ed. He's seeing this clear romance happening before his eyes and it doesn't occur to him that Stede, not Ed, is the one who hasn't figured it out.
So Ed's understanding of their relationship has been filtered through Lucius and through Stede's behavior, while Stede himself is largely oblivious to his own romantic feelings.
Stede doesn't know he's in love when Ed kisses him. Stede doesn't know what he is with Ed. He knows they're friends, but he's never had a friend. He knows he feels strongly about Ed, and was heartbroken when he left and elated when he came back. He also sees Ed apparently giving in to being taken by the English—shaving his beard, being happy folding socks, etc.—and that confuses him. Not so long ago Ed was talking about sharpening his sword for the next adventure. Then Ed tells him that he's the reason Ed has been happy all this time...and that's a lot of pressure for a guy who truly believed that his presence made very little difference to other people. He is Ed's happiness and he's never been that for anyone.
