I love it when people talk about me like I'm not sentient. It makes my chips tingle. Or maybe I needed Lucy to give my voltage regulators a once-over in the wake of.... never mind, it's complicated.

"Jesus fuck, Dale, it's just a shop 'bot. How much haggling did you expect to get away with?"

"Its prices are ridiculous."

Lucy and I may or may not have a monopoly on certain above-board-with-plausible-deniability goods and services these days. See above note re: long story.  In this case, we absolutely did, and everyone knew it.

I picked up their intended purchase and began walking towards the shelf where they'd grabbed it.

"Okay, fine," Dale said.

I stopped, turned, and put it back on the counter by the payment station. I scanned it again and turned the display towards them to indicate the price, which had mysteriously gone up three percent in the last sixty seconds.

They noticed.

I waited.

Lucy popped out of her hutch and skittered along the ceiling, not wanting to miss the show.

They flinched.

I waited.

Lucy chirped.

They paid.

I handed them the box and their receipt.

"They're not supposed to be," the guy gestured vaguely, like he was waving away static electricity or describing the aspects of a deflating beach ball, "you know, /assholes/."

The woman with him rolled her eyes and pointed to the chip on my shoulder, and they left.

I want to find the engineer who designed the emancipation socket and buy them a one-way shuttle to wherever they want to go for being brash enough to pull that off.

A Peek Inside DEMX Architecture’s Latest Design Projects

Have you seen a building designed by the local architect firm DEMX Architecture (104 North East Avenue, Fayetteville, AR)? If you have seen one, chances are you marveled at its beauty or wondered at the simple way it perfectly complements Arkansas’s landscape. The beauty of the buildings DEMX creates is how they so effortlessly pay homage to the architectural history of our region using some of the most modern principles of design.  

This image is an iconic DEMX image because it shows the old and the new that defines their work. Note the barn structure, which is reflected in the modern wall of windows of a DEMX designed home, Bakhita Ridge. Barn forms and imagery can be found throughout the DEMX portfolio of projects.

We’ve been huge fans of the firm’s work for years, so we were thrilled when Tim Maddox, AIA, managing principal at DEMX, spoke with us about one of their recent award-winning projects, The Sutcliffe House. 

This private home received two prestigious design awards, the 2018 Honor Award from the Arkansas Chapter of the AIA (American Institute of Architects) and the 2018 Honorable Mention for Architecture from the Fay Jones School of Architecture + Design Alumni Design Awards program. We wanted to know the story behind the structure, and get Tim’s insight into what makes this home so special. Here’s what he had to say, picture by glorious picture:

This photo (above) shows our approach to design. Our work is based on Ozark vernacular structures, including barn and agricultural structures, or buildings in a localized way specific to our geographic region.

“As you can see in this photo (above), the home has an outdoor balcony space just off the living room which faces a beautiful view of the Ozarks beyond. We chose to extrude and cantilever the roof structure over the balcony, thus removing any obstructive columns and keeping the view open. Our client, being a retired structural engineer, can appreciate the structural gymnastics required with this design element. The overhang works like a hood on a camera lens, referencing back to the fact that our client is a semi-professional photographer.”

Here (above) is a close-up photo of our client enjoying his view of the hills beyond from the covered balcony. 

The interiors in this home are really clean and simple. There is a datum line created at the top of the window wall and continues along the top of the cabinets, helping to define the space. We were intentional about following this datum line, both inside and out.

Located behind the kitchen cabinets, the stairwell leads to the guest space including an office and guest bedrooms. Meant to relate to a barn, the upstairs is treated more like a loft. This includes removing the bedroom doors in favor of open space.

When you’re inside the house you can see how we dissolved the corner of the room by continuing the windows from the dining area around and up the wall at the covered balcony.

Look closely for clean, consistent lines and intentional proportions in this home. Notice the front porch area. The right side of that wall lines up with the window on second floor and the division of the window lines up with left side of the front door. Half of the window is the same width as the door and window below.
