Romance Anime Starter List

I don’t know about you guys, but I’m sick and tired of seeing “Top ___ Best Anime of All Time” lists that are nothing but shounen. So, with "My Happy Marriage" getting a little attention from the anime community, I wanted to put together a list of some romance anime that I consider good “starters” for the genre. Because if I were just now becoming an anime fan, I’d think all there was to offer was shounen action series.

And by “starters” I mean basic stuff that’s not too…out there, and actually involves the characters getting together instead of just harems or using romance as a side plot (sorry Ouran High School Host Club and My Next Life as a Villainess).

So if you’re new to anime and want stuff that’s not just guys beating the shit out of each other (which is also fun, don’t get me wrong), here are some basics.

Taisho Maiden Fairy Tale- When the pessimistic Tamahiko Shima loses all function in his right arm, his family sends him away to live in the mountains with the cheerful, hard working Yuzuki Tachibana…who was purchased by the Shima family to pay off her family’s debts and basically act as a caretaker/future bride for Tamahiko so they’d never have to deal with him again. It’s a more cheerful version of My Happy Marriage (without the supernatural stuff), except in this one, the guy is the one who has massive self-esteem issues and an abusive family. There are still very serious themes, but ultimately it’s not meant to make you cry every episode. I swear it’s so good, but nobody watched it!

Horimiya- A slice of life in which pretty and popular high school queen bee Hori, finds out her quiet, unassuming classmate Miyamura is hiding piercings and tattoos that could get him expelled. The two gradually find out more about each other and get together in the most realistic way I’ve seen depicted in an anime. It’s also fucking hysterical and genuinely emotional.

Recovery of an MMO Junkie- Another slice of life that focuses on two adults who meet in an MMO game without realizing they also know each other in real life. I don’t want to say much more than that. It’s adorable, and the main character is so relatable it hurts.

Love with Yamada-kun at Level 999- Speaking of MMOs, this is a newer series about Akane Kinoshita, a college first year who’s reeling from a bad break up. In an attempt to get back at her ex, she winds up meeting Akito Yamada, a popular gamer who happens to be in her guild in the MMO they both play at an IRL meetup. The two go from acquaintances to something more as they keep running into each other. Even more relatable main characters and just wholesome relationships all around.

Snow White With The Red Hair- A fantasy in which an apothecary named Shirayuki (meaning, you guessed it, “snow white”) runs away from her home in order to escape becoming the concubine of her town’s prince. While fleeing, she is rescued by Zen, the prince of a neighboring country, and she ends up becoming an herbalist to repay him. It's super cute with some genuinely swoon worthy moments and a couple that just works so well together. I have a habit of comparing this to Akatsuki no Yona, even though the two aren’t really that alike. This is more romance driven while Akatsuki no Yona is more of a serious historical fantasy with romance elements (Yona manga is amazing, but the anime barely scratches the surface, so that’s why I didn’t include it).

Sasaki to Miyano- When the shy, easily flustered Miyano meets Sasaki, a cool “delinquent” upperclassmen, the two end up bonding over manga…specifically BL manga. That’s right, Miyano is a fudanshi, but due to his small stature and somewhat feminine appearance, he’s constantly trying to convince others that he’s not interested in having his own love story where he’d be reduced to a stereotypical doe-eyed uke. But as Sasaki and Miyano spend more time together, they realize that what they have is more than friendship, and they have to come to terms with their own perception of gay relationships. This is my favorite romance of all time. It’s a slow burn, but boy is it worth it. Their relationship is so natural and realistic, just like Horimiya. Just two people hanging out and bonding over things the way people do in real life!

Given: The story of some boys in a band with trauma. Enough said. It's great. Go watch it.

Bloom Into You- Yuu Koito is a high school girl who’s been waiting her whole life for her own perfect romance to start…but when she receives a confession, she realizes she doesn’t know how to respond when she’s just not into the guy. And then she gets another confession…this time from the cool student council president Touko Nanami, who basically jumpstarts her lesbian awakening. Very cute story about how we perceive the concept of love vs actually feeling it. Also has a canonically aro/ace side character, so that’s a win for me. Another show like this is Adachi to Shimamura (but I honestly don’t remember much about it. It just didn’t stick with me as much).

Ore Monogatari- Takeo Gouda is a tall, bulky high school first year with a sensitive heart of gold. He wants nothing more than to find his own true love, but most girls are intimidated by his enormous stature, and they end up falling for his conventionally attractive friend instead. That is, until he meets the tiny, adorable Rinko Yamato. He falls in love instantly, but he’s sure she’s interested in his best friend like everyone else, so he vows to help get them together, even though his heart is breaking. Peak himbo behavior. Pure of heart, dumb of ass.

Yuri on Ice- Yes it’s the gay figure skating anime everyone knows. And yes it’s a fucking romance, okay? I will die on this hill. The romance between Viktor and Yuri is just as important as the plot!

Kaguya-sama Love Is War- Two insanely smart high school students both have a crush on the other, but since they’re…you know…high schoolers, neither of them wants to admit it first. So they come up with increasingly convoluted plans to get the other to confess first. This will go down as one of the best of all time. It’s a hilarious yet poignant modern classic.

Fruits Basket- I’ve talked about it before and I’ll talk about it again. A romance “comedy” that slowly morphs into a drama about a girl named Tohru who finds herself living with the mysterious Sohma family after her mother dies. Little does she know, the Sohmas are the victims of a (somewhat silly, but ultimately tragic) curse that she must fight to break. Even though I’m more into it for the family drama, the romance is still top tier and plays an important role in the story. This is my second favorite anime of all time, and it’s a classic for a reason. If anyone hasn’t watched it yet, GO WATCH IT! IT WILL RIP YOU TO SHREDS!

And now for some honorable mentions that didn't quite fit into the regular list:

Ride Your Wave- A movie about a surfer who falls in love with a firefighter……and I’m not going to say any more than that. Go into it blind. If you like stuff like Your Name, this is a good one to watch.

Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun- A comedy about a high school girl who finds out the upperclassman she has a crush on is actually a shoujo manga artist, and no matter how she tries to confess to him, he just never gets it.

The Ice Guy and His Cool Female Colleague- A slow burn slice of life that focuses on a guy with ice powers who has a crush on his coworker. That’s it. That’s the show. When I say slow, I mean SLOW. It’s perfectly cute and fluffy, but my god does it take forever to get anywhere with these two.

Skip to Loafer- A high strung, small town girl decides to go to high school in Tokyo, where she meets a variety of classmates, including the laid back Sousuke Shima. The unlikely pair become friends, and soon enough, she starts to feel something more than friendship. The only reason I didn’t include it in the main list is because they don’t get together by the end of the first season, but it’s still really cute (also canonically trans character for the win!?)

So that’s my starter list. And no, I didn’t include Toradora, even though it’s a classic. I know it’s blasphemous, but I like it more as a comedy than a romance. It kinda lost me with the ending. But anyway, maybe someone will find something they like. Or maybe you'll just want to roast me and my picks 😅

picked up my given books, started reading vol5 then took a break to flick through the other volumes and man it is with the HEAVIEST heart that i must announce i kinda hate the style change

#the eyes are larger and more stylized with thicker upper eyelash lines... the faces are more angular in the 'anime' style...#in general the expressions are more anime-stylized and less realistic and like. on one hand they're more clear but on the other i liked the #vagueness! the lines are also thicker and basically i suspect the same thing might have happened as with k-on the manga #as in the artist started out with their own style but after the anime came out they adjusted their style to mimic the anime more #and... maybe it's the same here? but while the k-on anime-but-in-the-manga style is cute i don't vibe with this new given style at all #especially compared to the one in the first half of the series... maybe i'll do a comparison later to show what i'm talking abt #another point is that it also makes kzntk's style more similar to other BL art styles... and i liked hers because it was unique :///#not bloody optimal :(#liveshrimping #skimmed the books some more and i have a new thing i don't like: hiiragi used to be Just A Guy who's a bit of a tsundere but nothing #too out of the ordinary but now being a shouty crybaby seems to be his main personality trait #nnnnngh not a fan of the animefication. i liked this series because it's Not That!! ugh #of course i'm going to read it properly and wait until the last volume but. hhhhhhhh

Cooking Crush (Sun YT) ep 9 of 12 - They are such very good boyfriends. Also, this is a ton of kissing for OffGun. I’m at a loss as to how they are going to turn this into a decent 12 ep show. Unfortunately, I’ve foresee it going off the rails - pacing seems off.

For Him (Thurs iQIYI) ep 10 of 12 - We have our little No Comebacks twist. The sides are growing on me, but now the mains are boring me. The sudden gun-toting new characters are just weird. It’s like they took the script and just threw it down a staircase, gathered it back up again, then filmed that.

City of Stars (Fri iQIYI) ep 1 of 12 - Fueang is an actor in the midst of crisis and scandal. Normally I don’t like Thai BL when it’s tackles celebrity and this is... yep, the same. Our actor is pitted against an older worried nerdy app developer, Krom. And I feel that dynamic - hyung romance, jock/nerd? Very nice. But it’s also very Star Hunter. Never met a trope they didn’t wanna do a million times over - in the very first episode. Also I think I’m not a fan of the actor playing the lead.

My Universe (Sun iQIYI) ep 24fin - The blond who comes to get his hair shaved looks just like Fluke T (SOTUS et al). And even more like him after the shaving (My Bromance et al). Is that him? MDL doesn't say.

Anygay... something something: Orphan. Cancer. Kisses. Dream. Death. 'Bout what I expected. 2/10 even with a decent kiss I don’t do dream sequences and I don’t like death in my BL

All in all, I’m relieved that that’s over. The series is a slog. And in general I don’t recommend it. I plan to promptly forget its entire existence.

Ongoing Series - Not Thai

Love For Love's Sake (Korea Weds iQIYI) eps 3-4 of 8 - There is so much to adore about this show. The two younger guys who are suddenly in competition for the one older one. You know hyung romances are my favs. A hyung love triangle? COME ON. Also, I got to say this one’s giving me second lead syndrome. I do love me a brat. Add in all this on honorific play and linguistic flirting (as their should be in age gap). This is just THE BEST show.

Look I gotta say this: the "Who did this to you?" trope (AKA who hurt you?) is the single most popular romance trope right now, remarkable to see it turn up in a BL. And pleasing. Trust Korea to be ON TREND. It's their national agenda. *respect*

Perfect Propose (Japan Fri Gaga) eps 1-2 of 6 - From Fuji TV (who brought us the Pornographer series) adapted from Mayo Tsurakame’s manga, production team includes Tadaaki Horai (My Love Mix-Up!) and Takeshi Miyamoto (scriptwriter for Old Fashion Cupcake). Hiro’s so stressed at work he barely has time to eat so he passes out on the sidewalk. An unfamiliar face saves him and insists that they once promised to marry each other.

Sadly, I personally didn’t have the courage to enjoy it. Featuring a chaos nugget bad boy student who falls madly in love with his teacher, this should’ve been My Thing. But Japan failed me. It happens sometimes. The leads had no chemistry, and the age gap rather than being a narrative driver and source of conflict, was just ignored. 7/10

So this one is definitely part of the Creek Karaoke AU since the name of the Baked Goods are their pet names for each other or at least what Craig came up with and calls Tweek fer time to time.

Yes, i headcanon Craig as a Big Eater, or at least someone who's not very picky with food, thought it would be cute since in my AU, Tweek likes to cook and bake and his taste tester is Craig who either ends up Happy for being able to eat really good food or a round trip to the toilet.🤷

Dethentines 2024 Day 5

In the style of a romance novel

So, uh, because I'm not a reader of romantic novels @mirrorshards suggested I use a manga for today which I thought was better for me because I'm infinitely more knowledgeable in that field. That said, she still ended up helping me choose a title...

And like that, have a Skwistok version of the BL Therapy Game. This entry is a little more suggestive than the others, so take that as a warning. It was definitely challenging to adapt this story to these two for a handful of reasons but I think I managed! So, here we go~

Skwisgaar was used to messing around.

With women, with men, it was all the same to him. None of them really meant anything to him besides temporary fun and a good distraction.

And so, he didn’t think of anything different when this guy Toki walked around, weeping about his girlfriend who dumped him for somebody else. He was drinking his heart away for different reasons, anyway. His best friend and companion, the guitar, didn’t want to hang out with him these days.

Not that this guy would understand.

“Ahhh!!” Toki cried into his hands. “Linda, whys…you ams- hic- you ams the love of my lives…”

“T’ere, t’ere…” Pickles patted his back sympathetically while giving his friends a look.

Toki tried to reach for a half-empty bottle of Red Label, but Nathan grabbed it before he did. “I think you’ve drunk enough, buddy.”

“No ways!” Toki exclaimed, barely able to keep his body straight. “I wants to…I wants to drinks untils I die!”

“He’sch way over the line.” Murderface said with crossed arms and disdain on his face.

“Ja…” Skwisgaar agreed. “He shouldks probables gets goings.”

His three friends stared at him while Toki kept rambling like a drunkard.

“Whats?” Skwisgaar was confused.

“Well…” Pickles glanced to the side.

“You brought him over to us.” Nathan said, eyelids heavy but still stoic.

“Whats?!”

“Yeah!” Murderface pointed accusingly. “Thisch isch your fault!”

“Are you fuckings-”

“Whats ams you alls talkings abouts?!” Toki cried. “Nothings- hic- matters! Nothings matters but Lindas!” He threw his hands into the air. “Oh, Lindas, why!”

“God damns it…” Skwisgaar pinched the bridge of his nose.

“Lindaaaaaa…”

“‘S okey, Toki.” Pickles rubbed his back. “Skwisgaar will teik you home, right, Skwisgaar?”

“Fucks you.” Skwisgaar whispered to his friend. “Fines!” He slung Toki’s arm around his shoulder and picked him up. “Let’s goes home, cries babies.”

“Have fahn! But not too much fahn!”

“Yeah, definitely not too much fun.”

“Eschpeschially not too much fun.”

Skwisgaar rolled his eyes as he carried the babbling Toki away. Why did he have to take care of the idiot?!

At the end, Toki was so incoherent that Skwisgaar had to drop him at a hotel, because he didn’t remember his address. He was feeling a little sorry for him, though, so he watched over him until he stopped weeping against the pillow. This wasn’t the first time he had looked after a drunk person, anyway.

“Dids you calms down alreadies?” He asked, when Toki was staring at the ceiling silently. “I wants to goes home, you knows?”

Toki glanced at him, blinking. “Ams you?”

“Heugh?”

“You saids you was sads about de guitars…”

Skwisgaar was surprised Toki had remembered it in his state, but he shrugged it off. “Pfft, dat ams a differents kinds of lonelies nest.”

A grin spread across Toki’s face as he dragged Skwisgaar closer with his legs.

“W-Whats?” Skwisgaar asked in confusion, only now realizing how strong Toki was.

“Lonelies nest ams still lonelies.” He said before wrapping his arms around Skwisgaar. “Soes you gets a hugs.” His hand patted the back of Skwisgaar’s head.

“Eugh, lets goes…” Skwisgaar grumbled though he didn’t actually move away. “We amsn’t even friends…”

“We ams friends nows…” Toki squeezed him by the waist, his lips brushing with Skwisgaar’s ear dangerously. “Rights?” He whispered.

Surprised, Skwisgaar pulled away. Toki’s expression had abruptly changed, from friendly and innocent to dark and suggestive.

“Heys…” He cupped Skwisgaar’s face sweetly. “It ams fines to wants to be spoileds, you knows?”

What…?

In slow motion, Toki’s eyelids fell shut and his face began to grow closer. It’s not like Skwisgaar wasn’t used to being hit on by strangers constantly…

Wasn’t he straight though?

“You ams too drunks…” He tried to resist but Toki’s grip on him didn’t relent. Reluctantly, Skwisgaar let their lips meet and it was like a surgeon of electricity spread inside his entire body, shocking him.

Bewitched, Skwisgaar wrapped his arms around Toki’s neck, giving into it. He had never experienced such enticing tenderness before and he was swiftly growing addicted to it. Toki’s hands, lips, eyes on him…

Even if he had wanted to pull away, he wouldn’t have been able to.

He never wanted Toki to let him go now.

“Sorries…” Toki apologized the morning after. “I acts stupids sometimes when Is drunks…I don’ts remembers anythings…”

Skwisgaar was baffled. Seriously? The one time sex felt meaningful for him, the other party didn’t even remember it?

What kind of sick joke was that?

He cleared his throat. “I sees…” He said, unclasping his black leather choker from his neck. “You was pretties wasteds last nights soes…”

“Ja…” Toki seemed genuinely apologetic. “I never learns…”

“It amsnt your faults.” Skwisgaar gently grabbed him by the wrists and Toki looked up. “You gots brokeneds hearts.”

Toki’s eyes had a glimmer of hope. “Soes your forgives-”

“Hows ever.” Skwisgaar interrupted him, blue eyes piercing into blue. “Ams not letting last nights turns into nothingks.” With one smooth movement, he straddled Toki’s naked torso.

“W-Whats?” Toki’s eyes widened.

“You don’ts remembers?” Skwisgaar leaned towards him. “Dat ams fine. Alls makes you remembers…” He began undoing the button of Toki’s pants.

“Waits a minutes-”

“Nice and slows…” Skwisgaar continued, his fingers trailing along the zipper.

“I-I don’t wants to!” The panic was beginning to show in Toki’s face.

Skwisgaar smirked. “So you gets to takes advantages of someones and then refuse to acks knowledge? Dat amsn’t nice.”

“Dat’s not-” When Skwisgaar was about to shove a hand inside, he yelled. “Stops!”

It took a few seconds for Skwisgaar to figure he had fallen out of the bed and that the flashing pain on his stomach was from being kicked by Toki’s feet.

“Eugh…what ams you a monsters…” He groaned, doubling over.

Toki rolled to his side and stood up, a look of disappointment in his face. “Ams you always likes dis?” His breathing was visibly hitched. “Always being doings whats you wants? Beings spoileds?”

Skwisgaar squinted. “Whats?”

With barely any effort, Toki untied the choker from his wrists and threw it on the bed. “I thoughts we coulds be pals, but you ams a jerks.” He grabbed his clothes and walked towards the door before turning back. “And you ams gonna be all alones your holes lives!” The door was slammed behind him.

Stunned, Skwisgaar sat up. Did that crybaby runt just walk out on him?

“Fuckings dildos! Who ams he? What ams he- What de fucks!” Skwisgaar slammed his glass against the counter. “I hates him!”

“Dood, Skwisgaar, he was a guy mournin’ his girlfriend. Why did you even lay your hands on him?” Pickles took a sip of his bottle. “We told ya naht to have too much fahn with him.”

“I didn’ts-”

“Yeah, Skwisgaar, he was obviously straight.” Nathan added. “You gotta raise your standards, dude.”

“I wasn’ts-”

“Not everyone isch gay, Schkwisgaar.” Murderface said. “You schould remember that, I mean, you’re friensch with me and I’m not gay. I love ladiesch and titsch.”

They all went silent.

“Anyways, I didn’t starts anythingks, okeis?” Skwisgaar said. “He ams de ones whats jumps at my arms and has his ways wif mes. Ams innocents dis times.”

“This time…” Pickles rolled his eyes. “How many times have ye been tha one on tha other side of this cahnundrum, huh?”

“Yeah, why are you suddenly mad about this? You’re always breaking people’s hearts.”

“Eugh…”

“You’re a fucking schlut isch what you are!”

Skwisgaar buried his head in his arms. This was the opposite from being encouraging, they were just dogpiling on him.

“Just forget about tha dood. You’ll find someone new in no tahm. In fact, by tonight, even.” After a moment, Pickles added. “Guess there’s really people even Skwisgaar can’t seduce, huh.”

“He went too far.” Nathan agreed.

“Too smug.” Pickles continued.

“Too arrogant!” Murderface finished.

“Alrights, you know whats?” Skwisgaar sat straight, suddenly determined. “Dats it, alls does it!”

The other three stared at him like he was insane. “Do whet?” Pickles asked.

“Ams gonna makes dat stupid straights guys falls for me.” He raised his glass, smirking. “And dens alls breaks his hearts. Dat will teaches hims, nobody messes with Skwisgaar.”

While Nathan and Murderface shook his head in disapproval, Pickles snuck a hand inside his packet. “Well, I wasn’t gonna tell ye but if ye’re so hellbent on acting stoopid…” When he pulled out his hand, there was some sort of card on it. “He dropped this yesterday, mind givin’ it beck?”

Skwisgaar grabbed the card and inspected it closely, smiling when he recognized the item. It was Toki’s ID.

Exactly! A lot of things influence the way people come up with ideas, this is such a complex thing, of course not everything is going to cater to everyone – this is simply impossible. Picking and choosing and reading stuff that interests you while avoiding things that annoy or hurt you is always the way to go.

Oh, that’s a fun question. I feel like Idia would be the only one, and he would also probably have this excuse/explanation, like he really isn’t into BL, but this particular work is just very good, it has great art style, good writing + Idia’s favourite artist was influenced by this manga/series of doujins, so of course he had to get it, this is an important otaku artifact! And OF COURSE it’s paper, that’s the whole point! Even if it’s smutty, it’s art!

Ortho could start getting into BL himself; he would start by reading this one manga that Idia owns lol Idia was sure he’d hidden it well.

The rest of the cast strike me as normies… but hey, Lilia could have some! If he has any manga at all, I can imagine him owning a BL book just ‘cause. But since he probably bought it years ago when he was traveling around the TWST equivalent of Japan, it might be a bit outdated lol And probably a little cursed, which is why Lilia got so into this book back then.

You jumped out of bed at the sound of the door opening. You carefully put the manga you borrowed from Mikey on the coffee table next to you. You were afraid to take this manga from him, but when Mikey forced it, you had nothing to do.

That incident was still on your mind.

"Mommy?" you asked when you entered the living room. But you were wrong. It was your father who came. Still, you were a little excited to see, your father too.

"It's me, not your mother." your father said as he rummaged through the empty vases instead of looking at you.

"Welcome Father." Then he slammed the drawers open. You didn't say anything even though it got on your nerves that he didn't turn it off.

"Hello Y/N." he said indifferently and ruffled her hair as she left the salon. This little gesture of love made you smile.

"Are you looking for something father?" You said by going after him. Now he was in your room. He was rummaging through your notebooks, jewelry boxes, and drawers.

“Do you have the money?”

"What?"

"Did she leave money for you in the morning?”

You nod your head, that means yes. "Why father?"

Your father knelt right in front of you and patted your cheeks paternally. "How much did your mother give you?"

"About 4000 yen." You said quietly. You knew what would happen. You should have guessed from the first moment he walked into the house.

"Can you give me that money, dear? I promise I'll pay you double next week, what do you say?"

You didn't want to say anything. Because if your father came home, his only purpose was to take money. He received a fortnightly share of the money your mother earned by working nights. And like it wasn't enough, he was taking the money your mother left you too, saying that he would double it the next week.

You haven't seen his give back half that money, let alone double it.

"Isn't it a very profitable deal?" he continued.

You didn't have the luxury of saying no. But tomorrow you had to pay for school books.

"My mom left half of that money for my school fees. Tomorrow is the last day to pay for the textbooks." You said hoping she wouldn't get angry.

"I don't think anything will happen. Tell your teachers your mom didn't leave you any money, it's okay if you ask permission to bring it next week."

"But that's not true-"

"You're not lying for the first time in your life." He said and stood up. "Where's the money? Your father really needs it, dear Y/N."

You had nothing to say about it. Saying that you will give the money, you opened the small compartment in your school bag and handed all the money you took out to your father.

"Thanks, my beautiful daughter." He said and kissed your cheek. You didn't say anything even though you were disgusted. You were afraid your father would hit you. That's why you would never say no to him.

"I'm leaving. I'll be back soon, okay?" You didn't answer when he said it, you didn't even follow her to see him off. When you heard the door slam, you went into the living room and dialed one of the numbers you had memorized on your home phone.

You needed that money. On the second ring, the person on the other end finally picked up the phone.

"Hi." You said inside, cursing your father. He shouldn't have put you and your mother in this situation.

"Hello Y/N? Did something happen?" You were relieved when you heard your friend's voice saying.

"I'm going to ask you a favor. I'll be with you in a moment. Don't go anywhere." After saying that, you hung up the phone and ran to your room. You put on your clothes in no time, and after drinking a glass of water, you left the house. You put on your shoes and locked the door.

Why did your father put you in this situation instead of taking you to the park right now? Why didn't you have a father like the other kids have? You knew there were people worse off than you. But you were still a child. You were a kid who wanted his father and mother to come with him to the park.

It wouldn't be selfish to ask for so much you thought.

After walking through the dirty streets, you finally reached the front of the small warehouse. The warehouse was quite dirty, just like the street it was located on. Knowing that there was nothing you could do, you opened the door of the warehouse and entered. There was no use in embarrassment now. It was better to be embarrassed right now than to be embarrassed in front of your friends and teachers in class.

"Who the hell is there!" You were startled when you heard a shout. A boy your age stood in front of you in a way you didn't know where it came from.

"I was looking at Koko." You said in a timid voice. You knew not to mess with street punks. But It seemed like it was going to be a little tough when your best friends were the hooligans too.

The boy nodded to show he understood. He seemed to have news. "Go up those stairs."

You quickly made your way upstairs without making eye contact with the boy. This place was eerie and you wanted to go as soon as possible. It gave her goosebumps to remember her friends hanging out around here every day.

When you went upstairs, you entered one of the rooms and looked on a black-haired boy sitting on a red sofa.

"Koko?" You called out to the boy and he stood up with your voice. The moment you saw his face, you felt relieved.

"What are you doing here Y/N?" He asked with a little harshly. You knew he wasn't trying to be rude though. As the days passed, his demeanor became more and more stern. You're still friends after all, right? People change as they get older. No one would stay the same.

"I'm not trying to get straight to the point, but I need your help, Koko." You said while sitting where he pointed. Even if it was a little dirty, you tried not to problem. Now you were sitting opposite each other.

“I guess you need the money, don't you?” You nodded your head yes when he asked.

"I know I asked you last time too, but I have to pay for my schoolbooks tomorrow. I'll pay it back next week when my mom gives me pocket money."

Koko stood up. "It's okay, how much was it?"

"1500 yen is enough." You would only ask for the amount of your school fees. There was no need for the rest.

You were no longer surprised when he instantly took the money out of his pocket and handed it to you. Despite being the same age as you, what they did was incredible. The emotions he felt were also incredible.

"Thanks, Kokonoi. You never reject me."

"I said it's okay. Is it because of your father again?"

"Who else can it be!" You said with a angry voice. “The things my father does drive me crazy while my mother works day and night.”

"I hope your mother gets divorced soon." said Kokonoi, cursing your father with you. He was accompanying you as you descended the stairs.You never dared to tell your mother that, even though you thought about divorces most of the time. As you recall, they made happily married. You weren't sure right now if that love was still there though.

"By the way, Y/N, what's your mom job?" You shrugged when he asked.

"I don't know exactly. She works at night. Sometimes she goes abroad or something, I guess. She comes two days a week, leaves me money or something, checks my needs."

"But she's making a lot of money, isn't she?"

Your live in a good neighborhood. Since you've been alone for a long time, your mother decided to move to the neighborhood she think is safer. She had you enrolled in a private school. Your mother took care of all your needs, school fees, everything. But you see very little of her because of all this. Maybe if your father had done his part, you would have had more time with your mother.

"Yes, but you know my father. God knows what he spends that money on!"

Koko didn't want to answer that. Because his predictions weren't pretty. He didn't want to say it because he knew that these things didn't come to your mind.

"Y/N, I know your father is into your money. You never tell your father did, to your mother do you? It's okay to ask me for a loan, but you can't always find me."

"Yes Koko." You answered. You didn't understand what the boy was trying to say.

"Why don't you get a job? Even if it's a small job, you'll have some money you can hide from your father without his knowing it. At least until you tell your mother."

All sorts of thoughts filled your head with this new idea. The thing is, it was a really great idea. There was a lot of work for kids your age to do.

"This is actually a very thoughtful idea, Koko. Maybe I can get a job, even at a bookstore."

"Still, my advice is your mother get a divorce as soon as possible." You laughed when he said it. Even if you laugh, Koko was right. Yes, you might miss your father when you haven't seen him for a long time, but the moment you see him, this longing burns away.

"Isn't it dirty in here?" You asked when you came to the door of the warehouse.

"It is, but we manage." You smiled at him when he said that. Koko was a really close friend of yours. Whatever you needed, he never turned you down, always tried to help. Even though he's been through so much after what happened to Akane, he was still Koko sometimes.

“Thanks again, Kokonoi. If you need anything, please call.” When she said that, Koko nodded in agreement. After you said goodbye to her, you hurried home.

Along the way, you had in mind why people insisted on having children when they wouldn't care.

Why did the children suffer their sins?

They didn't ask them how they were born. It was unfair that they were born in a way they didn't want.

You thought that not everyone is created fair.

I have got to get over my grudge against face filters or face-tuning or whatever it's called when they blur the actor's face so their skin is completely smooth and texture free and very pale and has no dimensionality.

I'm watching Light On Me, and I'm charmed by all the characters, but I keep getting distracted by the fact that none of them look like human beings. grrr. Like, it kind of fits the comic book tropey-ness of the story, but I still would prefer to see their god danged faces.

(Fun fact: Shin Woo's actor's face is the reason I started watching Light On Me in the first place. Kang Yoo Soek has a small part in Beyond Evil, and within a minute of his appearance on screen I was like, who is THAT???👀, and immediately went to MDL to see what else he was in. Turns out he was in a BL! so I decided it was finally time to check this one out. Maybe I'm just resentful about them hiding his face from me. On the other hand, Beyond Evil and Light On Me are from the same year, and he looks a decade younger in the latter, so I guess the filtering helps with that? idk, I'd prefer everyone's real faces. But I realize that with this, as in many things, I am not the target audience.)

My thoughts on Light On Me so far (im on episode 3 oops, actually it was 4): It feels like a high school romance comic book aimed at 12 year olds come to life. Which is not at all a criticism! But the aesthetic—bright, flat lighting, wide open spaces, saturated pastels and primary colors, the aforementioned face filtering—along with the trope filled, bare bones nature of the story give it this artificial feel. I don't read comic books, manga or manwha of any genre, so I could be wrong in this comparison, but it does tell like it exists outside of the real world in the same way that Disney Channel kids shows do (though not in the same world.) The characters, so far, don't feel like they exist outside of the story, not shallow, exactly, just that the rest of their lives and relationships are a vague blur, and the initial conflict—Shin Woo doesn't want Tae Kyung to join the student council!—feels like the sort of artificially induced high stakes of a kid's show. The—gasp—pratfall with a dildo.

I probably sound judgmental, but that's partly because super fluffy shows aren't my thing in general, and partly because I'm in a weird mood right now where even the real world doesn't feel all that real to me, but I reiterate, this is not a criticism. The show is creating a certain feel to tell a certain story, and (so far at least) it's doing it effectively.

And I am intrigued by the story, and the characters! Tae Kyung who has been convinced by the wise teacher to try making friends. Da On, the student president who is so kind and can't say no to anyone. Shiwoon, the class clown who can see what's happening but won't get involved. So Hee, the girl from the sister school, persistent in her three year (!) crush. And of course tsundere Shin Woo, possibly with some internalized homophobia, and who we know, based on Shiwoon's hints and the laws of Romance Tropes, must have a crush on the new boy and can't handle it.

The taundere seme is a trope I love when it works well, and loathe when it's bad, and I think it's working here for me because Tae Kyung is such a weirdo. He's no blushing maiden uke, he's blunt and doesn't care that's he's awkward, and still not sure if he wants to even bother with other human beings. It makes Shin Woo's attraction to him more specific and real, and makes me curious to see how their dynamic develops.

So even though the character don't feel anchored to any reality outside of what we see on screen, in the small slice of a tv world they do exist in they seem complex and worth getting to know.

(They also intrigue me enough that part of me wants to see these same characters and conflicts, but framed in more gritty realism style, like that of Weak Hero Class One. I think there's enough there to make it work! But that's more about my personal taste than anything else.)

edit: not that Weak Hero Class One is exactly realistic. But it's a different kind of fairy tale atmosphere. One that sometimes gets called "gritty realism."

My order for the second and third volumes of Wandering Son came in today, with those, I now have all 8 volumes of the series that were published into English by Fantagraphics before it went out of print.

Those two volumes are some of the hardest to find, I ordered them from a used book site and paid like $80 total for them. The rest of my volumes were all new when I bought them.

They're ex-library books from New Jersey, with the stickers and markings on them. I can remove the stickers easily, but I wish they didn't have the ink stamps, slight tears, stains, creased pages, etc.

I lost faith that Fantagraphics would ever reprint the missing volumes of Wandering Son or continue it a while back.

It all stemmed from this email I sent to them back in 2018, where they effectively confirmed it was unlikely.

Currently, on their website, only the fifth to seventh volumes are still in stock, whether that's reprints or surplus I'm not sure.

According to the words of the translator, Wandering Son didn't sell that well for a number of reasons as stated in the article.

To add on to those points, I'll note that the series was published in English from 2011 to 2015, a bit before the big LGBTQ+ manga "boom" that has become very visible nowadays. While it may have been hard to justify the production costs in the early 2010s, I am for certain that if Wandering Son was given a second chance today, it would outperform.

Ironically, despite being out of print for several years now, Wandering Son was added to a list of banned books by the state of Texas two years ago. You could definitely advertise it with that distinction in hand.

I find it convenient that the last time Fantagaphics tweeted about "Banned Books" in 2019, especially with how things have been going on in the past few years. Because if they tweeted about them today, they'd have to talk about Wandering Son, a series they've left out to die basically.

That Shimura Takako's other works published into English, Sweet Blue Flowers and Even Though We're Adults, reference Wandering Son on the back of their covers, shows how the series has staying power despite its print status.

The fact that both are yuri titles that have thrived or are thriving, just shows how works about trans people are seen as "less marketable" compared to other LGBTQ+ stories, yet they'll still be exploited for profit to uphold those "more marketable" ones.

You can see this with the number of trans manga currently in the English market compared to yuri or especially BL titles.

I understand that Fantagraphics went through some hard times in the 2010s, but at this point, if they're not going to do anything with Wandering Son, I'd rather they give up the license to someone who actually will.

That's a lot of salt, but to tie it back, I'm really glad to own the 8 volumes of this series in hardcover.

We keep getting multiple Japanese manga adaptations a year, so I have a question. From the mangas that you know and like that haven't been adapted yet which one would you give to other BL-producing countries for adaptation? (Bonus points for the preferred pairing 😉)

Just off the top of my head and pulling from this older post:

Desire -> Korea

I like it when Korea does high school settings and Desire is a non-frenetic, non-slapstick piece. I think it's suits KBL's quiet elegance more than Japan's HS style

No preference on pairings as Korea rarely reuses a pair.

I'd also give Korea a crack at Given and I Hear the Sunspot (Silhouette of Your Voice), IMHO Japan didn't do great with either.

For something a bit more light weight, how about The Sky Over My Spectacles? or RePlay or The Summer With You.

I actually think there is quite a bit of light soft yaoi that would be better handled by Korea than Japan at this juncture. Sorry not sorry.

For me, Japan hasn't had a hit in that arena since Seven Days. It's a bummer Korea doesn't cross adapt. Not yet, anyway.

Brother -> Taiwan

Brother is explicit, the highest heat manga of its day, and it's taboo. Taiwan is already kinda doing this premise with Unknown (and they touched on it with H4) but Brother is way more sexy and way less angsty. All cards on the table this is probably my favorite yaoi.

As for a pairing? Maybe these two:

They are the ONLY country I would hand my precious Brother off to.

Finder series -> Thailand

Honestly, there are plenty of high heat pairs who could handle this one. It's photographer meets mafia. MaxNat for example.

Finder's baby boy is a bit of a chaos muffin and our Daddy is VERY Daddy so they do need to play into that dynamic and be able to handle high heat, which means certain pairs are better choices than others.
