Hey u wanna see how hard I can ramble about homestuck classpects AND hazy river character analysis at the same time?? Too bad!! You will!!

SO holy fuck I've been trying to come up with homestuck classpects for Annie and garcello for the LONGEST time and Annie has ALWAYS been a problem area for me cause of her lack of real story and canon characterization

Garcello imo is a rogue of doom, the rogue class steals their aspect for the betterment of others and well.... "stealing doom" in a way for someone else's benefit is literally exactly what he does in seos!! And the description of a doom player's personality really does fit him!! Easy right?

But then Annie. Oh my fucking gog

She has almost 0 canon dialogue and little to no story. The only instances of her even talking were the butter comic and snowed in. We might have some backstory shit that's been shared around before and Drowning of course but other than that she doesn't have much of a real storyline.

I've discussed this on discord and a lot of ideas were thrown around like maybe void, for her aspect, which does fit in a meta sense considering all beyond-surface-level characterization for her is pretty hard to find or completely unknown, and I've thought about either time or hope or rage being her aspect based on personality descriptions and her weaponizing rage in her liquid form but none seemed to really fit perfectly for her, especially when trying to pick a class.

(Before you bring up seos with lyrics as much as I ADORE how Annie is acted in it holy fuck dude it still gives me chills it is not canon)

Then it fucking hit me. Hope is literally perfect in a meta sense (and I'm operating on homestuck logic so I'm allowed to do that hehehhehe)

How we perceive Annie as a character is based a ton on fanon. Ideas like her having self esteem issues, for example, were extrapolated by fandom because of Good Enough being her first song. The butter comic, the first of only 2 times she's spoken in any official capacity, came from THE FANDOM MAKING SHIT UP and then anne making a comic based on it. Other bits of characterization from discord were gleaned from THE FANDOM ACTIVELY WANTING IT.

The hope aspect in homestuck is strongly connected with believing in something so hard it becomes real. This is seen with Jake's creation of brain ghost dirk, and eridan making a plain ass wand and then believing it's some powerful God weapon, and then it actually being powerful

Do. Do you see what I'm getting at here. Her whole character is heavily based in what we think it is based on what little we have. If that doesn't make her being a hope player fucking perfect i don't know what does.

As for class tho I'm a little bit stumped. I'm feeling like maybe witch since the 2 most prominent witches in homestuck do remind me a lot of her, personality-wise. They're also characters who have a particularly strong connection with the magic and power their classpect gives them. Jade's been experiencing the weird magicy shit that relates to her role within sburb and homestuck's narrative her whole life. Feferi's biggest move as the witch of life is very personal to her, talking to the horrorterrors to create the dream bubbles was only possible cause of her existing connection to a similar creature, being her lusus.

And annies liquid, while already being just a badass magical tool by itself, feels an awful lot like an extension of her energetic, over-the-top personality. Just more violent. The fact it canonically makes her more animalistic and instinctual just carries on her existing animal theming.

Also hope has a lotta religious theming and Annie has been connected with imagery of devil horns a LOT. Just thought that was neat.

Annieway tldr after over a year of thinking about this and having an epiphany watching a laureledeevees video about Jake English and lots of wiki and extended zodiac reading.. Garcello is a rogue of doom and Annie is a witch of hope

Ok so people seemed to like my ocd dirk post (found here) and it’s a perfectly respectable 6:30 in the evening so I don’t have an excuse but I DO have a few more ideas (I’ve been having a go of it lately) so I’m gonna put some here. As a warning, this strays more into headcanon territory than the other one, and probably won’t make sense without the context of that first post. Also, to reiterate: cw for in depth descriptions of compulsive behaviors regarding scrupulosity (moral), violent intrusive thoughts (alluded to, non-graphic), and contamination, as well as mentions of self harm and pica. Moreso than the other post I am going to stress that if you are prone to picking up obsessions or compulsions through reading about them, then I would skip out on this one.

-obligatory disclaimer: I am only an expert on my own experiences. While these headcanons draw from those, there are some key differences (which I will not be disclosing for reasons of personal privacy), and it is important to note that ocd can look very different depending on the person. That said, let’s jump in!

- so for context, a common-ish way for morality compulsions to manifest is in researching what makes a good person vs a bad one. While I don’t think that Dirk’s interest in philosophy started as a compulsion, I definitely think that it- much like everything else- gets roped into it in that he turns to texts that explicitly deal with morality and its limits in a more exclusive and (of course) obsessive way than he might have otherwise. He also strikes me as someone who has a good enough memory to turn these texts over and over in his head even when he can’t outright access them

-this gets upsetting in that it’s a bastardization of something you enjoy by something else that’s dominating your life in an extreme and overtly negative fashion. Lots of very complex, complicated feelings in that visiting these texts/ideas would still serve as a form of relief for him, but it would be in a way that honestly feels a little like mockery. As in, the co-opting of a hobby by a compulsion would inevitably lead to lots of shame in the attempt to engage with that hobby even if you're actually trying to do it for fun, or have done it for fun in the past.

-a difficulty I’ve found in this same vein is that sometimes material that doesn’t trigger you at the time comes back to bite you months later, especially if you’ve got a decent memory for it. In terms of reading as i've mentioned it here, that might be like guilt for having read it in the first place or immediately conflating actions in the text with things that you have done (or in some cases haven’t), just general confusing boundary blur stuff. I can see that being an issue with him too.

-splinters time!! Hal often makes mention often of his existence specifically as a machine in the same way that dirk makes direct reference to himself as ‘a stone cold motherfucker’ (quoting from memory please excuse if I’m a little off). A good chunk of dirks splinters are robots of some sort, and some- like brobot- serve as something that is intended, at least in part, to enact controlled- this is key- violence. Now, keeping in mind that I’m approaching dirk with the hc that he has moral obsessions w/violent intrusive thoughts, and that people who fall under this category are-to sum it up- afraid of losing control, we get:

- my personal favorite set of headcanons, in which dirk develops a fear of strong emotion as it leads to impulse and impulsive people do stupid things. He then immediately connects this fear to physicality because there are some parts of your body that you inevitably cannot control- if you are hungry you might get angry, there are physical effects of stress, the physical effects of guilt, there’s a lot- and so turns to creating these robot versions of himself in an attempt to mitigate and control not only his emotion but also their attached physical responses. In doing so, he attempts to create a version of himself wherein that capacity for both violence and emotion is completely under his control. It’s also important to note that this does not work. Think brobot ripping out his heart- that’s not exactly logical, emotionless behavior, now is it?

- I love this one. It forces him to confront his own humanity, and thus imperfection; as well as the fact that there are some things- on a fundamental level- that you just can’t change. I mean this in the nature/nurture sense, but also in that like. He’s gonna have to breathe. His neurons fire, his neurons misfire, things go right and things go wrong. There’s a lot going on in homestuck in terms of permanence and physicality; sometimes, you just have to accept things as they are, and then of course accept that those same things might someday change. Again, it’s a control thing

-also, i imagine this line of thinking takes place like a solid couple of years after he started exhibiting full-blown symptomatic behavior which is why it’s a completely disordered and What the Fuck way of thinking. I’d like to reiterate: this is a very intense set of feelings that you are sitting with constantly, in one way or another, and in this case dirk is smack in the middle of his developmental years. Trying to navigate identity development is difficult enough; trying to do navigate identity development when you’re doubting everything down to the way your neurons fire off is near impossible. Shit gets weird.

-ok this one’s just straight projection and also not ocd (there is an overlap! Sometimes. Not always.) but. Pica. Also, I have a personal curiosity in regards to how this would be dealt with, as it’s potentially very dangerous for a good number of reasons and again: there’s not much to fall back on here in terms of like medical assistance. There’s the matter of his being god tier of course, but that doesn’t prevent physical damage, and there are plenty possible complications. This is a lot of questions and very few solutions. Sorry about that

-another fun one: it’s common enough for people with ocd to equate thought directly with action. Dirk’s enough of an overachiever that I like to think he starts equating OTHER people’s actions directly with his own. Starts off small enough, like someone he’s close to does something not great (not terrible; just normal human mistakes) and he’s like fuck ok gotta go back through my memories and see if I contributed to that and then this escalated of course and like a year later he’s feeling guilty for things a hypothetical character in a thought experiment he read about two years ago did.

-of course this denies the actual people he’s thinking about their autonomy, or at least in direct relation in regards to how he thinks about them. Right back to the self-fulfilling prophecy

-I made direct mention of this in a semi coherent meta post (found here but like at your own risk) but in canon dirk seems to trust his actions more than anyone else’s, but doubts his motives, which basically just sums up everything. Hm.

-this is some more overt projection, but I was heavily influenced by my having consistent, unrestricted internet access from a very young age, which is to say that while my obsessions did not originate with my gaining access to the internet, it was instrumental in shaping them into what I’ve ended up at now. Dirk’s in a similar situation in terms of the internet, moreso in that he can’t just up and walk away- it’s literally his only connection with humanity. A warped one, granted, because the internet highlights and encourages extremes, which isn't great in this particular context. There’s a lot there, but it’s a… very complex topic that I’ll probably make a third part for if the urge strikes

-to wrap it up: while I sincerely doubt it was intended, there’s a lot to be said about the concept of splintering as exhibited by dirk as an allegory for ocd, as for many people it facilitates an intense separation from the self. There’s you, your thoughts, you-and-your-thoughts (this is different), your actions, your memories, so on, so on. This isn't the only interpretation, of course- I’ve seen lots of other good ones, DID, NPD, BPD, but I am much less qualified to comment on those so I’m just standing off to the side and waving in enthusiastic encouragement- but if nothing else its one that ive found a lot of comfort in and on that I hope other people might to, so. That’s all I’ve got.

ooo what a great question! for this one i think first we'd need to break down current stereotypes about olivebloods. there's actually not much that we're given about them tbh

according to the homestuck wiki, which is based on info from both the comic and more dubiously canon things like friendsim and hiveswap, the olive caste's two singular traits seem to be "wild animal" and "romance liker". both of these, obviously, are traits pulled from our wonderful main girl nepeta, who was the singular representation of the olive caste for a long time; alongside her dancestors. which is quite cute, who doesn't love nepeta?

the thing is though that i am one of those nitpicky people who likes to say, "well, hey now, nepeta isn't actually representative of her caste at ALL." in fact, none of the beta trolls are. i honestly feel like it should be assumed that just like the beta kids, the beta trolls are weirdos, and not really the 'norm' in their society.

nepeta lives out in the wilderness very specifically away from society in a way that is remarked on as being unusual even for someone of her color; and she does not even understand what role her caste would have given her in normal society. and i mean... considering aradia tavros and sollux are LOWER than nepeta, it doesn't really make sense for them all to have nicer houses than her unless she's unusual in her situation.

^ nepeta is in fact NOT a good representation of olivebloods.

which means... no, i don't think all olive trolls are romance obsessed wilderness girls, actually, sorry, hiveswap friendsim, i have to shelve you from my alternia analysis for now.

luckily, there ARE other olivebloods in the series!

first of all, the other leijons. unfortunately, none of them are really "good" examples either. meulin is from an entirely different planet, and disciple is from an ancient history perhaps even less representative of "normal" life than nepeta is. all we really get from them is stuff we already knew from nepeta-- the wildness, the relationship interest. with an added fact that both meulins seem to be somewhat bookish.

and so who does that bring us to? the final canonical oliveblood.

that's right.

troll will smith.

troll will smith is canonically an oliveblood. not only that, but he's a famous actor, which means he is basically a "model" for society- for what it looks like once you "have it all made". i would imagine this goes even more for alternia, supposedly a very movie-geared society.

the two troll will smith features that canonically exist on alternia are Fresh Prince and Hitch. in both of these films, will smith plays a character that is self-made and clever, a regular guy who is just skilled. it should also be noted that while a "threshecutioner" is a job with a heavy blueblood populous, greenbloods can also be one, and it's common enough that a show about it wasn't cut by the alternian dictatorship.

so therefore, what traits can we pull that all of these olivebloods (and equius lol) display to us?

olive trolls are lower class, but they're capable of working up through their connections

likely due to this, olive trolls are often clever and self made. they're likely quick-witted and sharp

they're good at their jobs! most olive trolls that are seen in the comic are very good with their respective practices (be it drawing, writing, bookkeeping, or melee fighting)

it's possible that olive trolls have a good intuition, and are fairly in touch with their own instincts. this would explain why some of them seem to fare better in the wild or in fights, and also why they are stereotyped as having a natural inclination for relationships. i think this is also a good transition ground between the impressive physical psionics of the castes lower than olive, and the emotional/mental psionics of the highbloods above them.

so, there we go. these are my olive headcanons! they're not comfortably well off or anything, but they're not wild animals either-- they're hard workers and skilled at what they put their minds to. probably usually working a nine to five and doing their best in life hoping to move up with a good quadrant or promotion. at least, in my headcanon anyway- no need to take this as fact!

Worst Headcanon is easily Transfem Cronus. The optics on that are so insanely bad it hurts. I typically don’t care what people do with Trans headcanons but… Really? Cronus? The guy whose main gimmick is “violently bigoted child predating serial sexual abuser who fakes being minorities for pity and attention”? Really? Fucking really? I’m sorry, any Trans headcanon with Cronus is going to be deeply offensive out of the gate, but looking at those traits and deciding that’s a Trans Woman is just… It’s just so bad. Jesus Christ.

I will avoid being typical by saying the Alpha Troll Openbounds, even though it’s ABSOLUTELY TRUE. Second place is Homosuck/Caliborn’s general character arc. That shit ruled. Caliborn is easily one of the best written characters in Homestuck. I love that guy. You should love him, too.

well she kind of creates a main villain just so she can be the person to save the day. also everything else about her.

Wow where do I begin; She causes all of her own problems on purpose. And everyone else's too

creates one of the main villains just so she can be the one to kill him. many such acts. she does die for it; she's vriska

It's sort of the entire narrative. She genuinely believes that she not only can but deserves to be the hero of every story and also the machiavellian puppeteer engineering the problems for her to then swoop in and solve. She dies to her own hubris of course but then comes back and continues it in a new and exciting way. I havent had any coffee yet but if you want more examples I would suggest reading Homestuck because really the whole story is sort of her fault; Genuinely one of the best characters ever. Horrible person. Peak hubris

She is so, so convinced that she can do anything that she doesn't even stop to think if it might fail. Her best friend has to kill her about it; Vriska. Invented hubris, really.

Has all of the luck. All of it. Or at least she's convinced she does. Literally becomes a god and then gets stabbed in the back (very very literally) cause she's so convinced she's unkillable; Mind controls a dude into jumping off a cliff. Mind controls a girl into blinding herself. Mind controls another dude into killing his girlfriend. I don't like her. Also I'm sorry for submitting her.

Kim Dokja

Tries to take down the gods and the inflating system that runs the world? Check. Convinced at all times that he has the most accurate information and best plans? Check. Sacrifices himself multiple times thinking it won’t affect anything? Check. Uncomprehending when his family is devastated by this? Check. Attempts to sacrifice himself to keep the world running bc he has decided to take on full responsibility for all the hurt in the world, despite the fact that multiple people (including the one who created the world and the one who drives it forward) tell him it was not his responsibility? Check. Thinks he can trick his family into leaving him behind by giving them only a piece of himself? Check; He literally can pick up a stick and the world reinvents itself to create a story called “Kim Dokja and a Stick.” He learns nothing from this.

constantly girlbossing too close to the sun. he annoys the dangerous, very easy to piss off Protagonist™ at every opportunity. he talks down to the Extremely Powerful Beings that put him & the entire rest of the world into giant death game arenas, and he has gotten into trouble for it. he uses the standard isekai cheats to make himself overpowered, but then the Extremely Powerful Beings (which he has pissed off) use that as an excuse to up the danger level for *everyone*. he makes enemies at every turn. he's died multiple times, sometimes on purpose because he knows he'll come back. (i'm a webtoon reader and a little behind so i don't know the full extent of what he does, but he's done enough already.); i wouldn't be surprised if the ending of the novel includes him getting so op he simply explodes into dust

5. What’s the fic you’ve written with the angstiest ending?

idk uhhhh i wrote a series once where two of the main couples break up at the end, but it wasn't really angsty

they all end pretty happily

if i did it was so long ago i don't remember it

no but people used to send passive aggressive hate about my art in fics once in a while. hasn't happened in like 2+ years

yes. every kind. EVERY KIND

a bot will sometimes scrape my high kudos homestuck fics and plant them on a junk ebook site

yeah i think like 7 of them got translated into russian and do numbers on ficbook.net

in the past me and my friend would sit around a laptop and scream laugh write our way through crack fics

14. What’s a WIP that you want to finish but don’t think you ever will?

i finish almost all my WIPs because i'm a freak. if i don't finish a WIP it's because some dramatic life event happened. this has only occurred two times

im a funny binch

i don't outline or edit or re-read any of my fanfic. i just type it and then eyeball it for typos and then post it. i COULD outline and such to really make the narrative nice and tight, but i don't find it very fun to do (for fanfic) and this is like, my relaxing wind down hobby. i just wanna have fun haha. the only reason my fics like, make sense, is because i write at least one ending scene first thing and always aim for that, and also i write out of order so i kinda know the route of the story

17. What are your thoughts on writing dialogue in other languages in a fic?

it's fine if it makes sense to do it there as a narrative device
