Top 10 cdramas (of all time)
With a few disclaimers: this is obviously an extremely subjective list based on my extremely subjective preferences. I love palace conflicts, enemies to lovers, grumpy-sunshine, and devoted MLs. I’m not a big watcher of xianxia as a genre (the last one I finished was …journey of the flower? Unless you count novoland: castle in the sky as one, which I don’t) and youth dramas. I’m also generally allergic to republic era dramas. But it doesn’t mean that there aren’t good ones, just not my genre.
Anyways, drumroll…
1. Legend of Ruyi (bc I refuse to call it Ruyi’s Royal Love in the Palace)
I wrestled back and forth with this and my #2. Funny enough, this one does not have a devoted ML (I think Qianlong is like the opposite). Zhou Xun’s acting is breathtaking and what a journey she takes you on.
2. Story of Minglan
This is pretty much what I wish BBC period dramas could produce and everything that Downton Abbey wished it could be. Yeah I said it. The only reason it’s #2 is that I rewatch Ruyi more.
3. Bu bu jin xin (step by step/original scarlet heart)
I have it higher than Gong because BBJX is one of those dramas that you see new things even upon the 10th rewatch. It’s also a master class on concise writing/directing.
4. Glory of Tang Dynasty
I’ve devoted a lot of posts about it. There are probably ones lower on my list that are objectively “better” but that entire list that I’m weak for? This contains all of them.
5. Legend of Zhenhuan
Funny enough, 5 years ago it would have been on the top of my list. It’s still great, but I just like the 4 above better.
6. Go Ahead
Wait, a modern cdrama on this list? Yes. What can I say, it’s a show where in the span of an episode I’m laughing so hard my stomach hurts and crying into a pillow.
7. Singing all along
I didn’t anticipate this would be so high up my list when I first watched it. But it’s probably one of Yuan Hong’s best performance to date and other than the enemies to lovers, it hits all of my kink. It does have an HEA (that’s not a spoiler, it’s based on 2 historical figures), but get ready for a lot of angst to get there.
8. Jade Palace Lock Heart
I maintain that it’s the best adaption of boys over flowers and I stand by it.
9. General and I
This is probably where my disclaimer comes in. Yes, there are plot holes. Yes, Angelababy’s acting is questionable. Yes, there are questionable CGI. Yes, there are pacing issues.
But it is a sweeping romance novel coming Tom life and hit every one of my kinks.
10. Battle of Changsha
A republic era drama on this list? That has motherland patriotic tones giving this first gen Chinese American very complicated feelings?
But it’s like Wallace Huo’s best acting to date. It is hopeful and heartbreaking at once.
(Honorable mention, goodbye my Princess which narrowly came in at #11)

One of our Patrons, specifically Peter from the $5 tier, came up with an excellent idea for Movie Health Community that I'd like to make happen right here and now: a curated list of movies that are safe for photosensitive audiences to watch! Out of the 1074 movies we've evaluated so far, 130 of them have a Flashing Lights score of 0 or 1, so here is that list of 130 titles, in alphabetical order.

Aşk-ı Memnu in general is pretty sober on the subject of how Westerners see Turks, especially with Mademoiselle de Courton’s initial expectations from a Turkish house:
“Mlle de Courton had a desire to fulfill in Istanbul: to enter a Turkish home and to live a Turkish life in this Turkish country… As she entered Adnan Bey’s yalı, her heart had raced with joy as though she were entering her true, dream home. When inside, this joy turned to astonishment. She had imagined a large, marble hall, a dome supported by stone columns, divans covered in oriental rugs and worked here and there with mother-of-pearl, and seated upon them pairs of women whose naked feet were dyed with henna, whose eyes were lined with kohl, whose heads were always veiled, and who slept all day to the sound of the negroes’ tabor, or who never put down their ruby and emerald encrusted hookah pipes while the scented smoke wafted from a small silver brazier set in one corner. With the relics of what she remembered of the myths and legends of all of those western writers and painters, she had never considered the possibility that a Turkish house could be anything else. When she found herself in the stylish little parlour of the yalı, she had looked at her guide with questioning eyes.
‘Really! Are you sure you have brought me to a Turkish house?’
The old girl had never been able to accept that she had been deceived in her dreams, and though she had thus lived a genteel Turkish life for years, in her heart she still wants to believe that the oriental life of her imagination must surely exist.”
(Chapter 3)
But the below passage always struck me as kind of a “restoration of honor”:
“He remembered one in particular, a German Jewess met at a show of the Operaia Italiana, who, hearing a rumour that was being circulated at that time, that Behlül was to be consul general to some fashionable place, had gone mad with the dream of being the wife of a Turkish civil servant. Beginning that evening, she had spoken to him of marriage every time they saw each other. This story had ended with the mother, who, unable to give her daughter away as Behlül’s wife, had given herself instead. Then Behlül’s eyes were drawn to the shelf where an elegant veil of crimson satin was draped on the head of a statue of Vishnu.”
(Chapter 11)
I actually respect it. As his memoirs reveal, Halit Ziya is completely aware of the poor view Europeans have on Turks, he might have wanted to create his alternative reality in fiction.
Anyway, I thought of this because for the past few hours I have been looking into Downton Abbey and the erroneously named Turkish diplomat Kemal Pamuk (Turks didn’t have surnames until 1934) could have been a Behlül type. I can see Behlül having such an “adventure” as Kemal Pamuk did in Downton Abbey.

The Pipe Dream of a Mary Crawley Divorce
I've seen several posts here and on Reddit recently about speculation that Mary and Henry are gonna get a divorce in the next installment of "Downton Abbey".
And, you know, let me get at the head of that line.
But I just don't think it will ever happen.
I'm not sure if anyone remembers or knows about the behind the scenes drama of the "Matthew Goode Incident" but I'm pretty sure that it is a hill that Michelle Dockery will die on and that Fellowes will make sure she dies on.
Basically, cliff notes ...
Dockery got to know Matthew Goode during the shooting of a movie in which she had a bit part as Ryan Reynold's daughter - it's a long story. And later, Allen Leech got really tight with Matthew Goode on "The Imitation Game" and the three started hanging out together a lot.
It was then that someone - I think it was Dockery - got the galaxy brain idea to offer Matthew Goode a job on Downton Abbey, sight unseen ... and without permission or authority to do so. As a favor they wrote Henry Talbot in as a one-time but future prospect suitor in the - then - series finale.
At the time Dockery was pushing for a husband for Mary to close up "Downton Abbey" and Fellowes said no, that Mary was gonna be single and focused on being a mother to George and run the Estate now that Tom was leaving. They went back and forth about it. At the time Downton Abbey was supposed to end at Season 5 and the Christmas Special was written as a series finale. But then they got picked up for a Season 6 and the entire cast had to sign on.
And - allegedly (an urban legend) - Dockery used her Season 6 contract negotiation to force Matthew Goode on the show permanently as her husband. For, really, no other purpose than so that she, Matthew Goode, and Allen Leech could hang out. This went over like a lead balloon and due to the forced hand, Fellowes did the very bare minimum character work for Henry and basically shoe-horned him in at the last moment.
As it was Henry was hated by the fans and was incredibly disliked by Fellowes. Afterward, basically, the backlash was to Jar Jar Binks levels from the fandom that both Matthew Goode and Julian Fellowes want to memory hole the character at this point. However, out of pettiness, the character of Mary is now settled in a bad marriage with an absentee husband that I doubt Fellowes will ever allow Dockery to escape.
Fellowes basically gave Dockery everything she wanted and then drowning her and her character in it. Just like when Laura Carmichael continued to badger him about Gregson coming back, till he wrote his grizzly murder just to make it clear to Carmichael that it was never going to happen.
If you don't believe me ... Dockery admitted to it in a Season 6 PBS interview that has since been unlisted on youtube to erase evidence of the incident. Also, there is a interview with Matthew Goode during "The Offer" premiere in which someone asked him about appearing in "A New Era" and ... let's just say he was very cordial but not entirely shy about expressing his opinion of Downton Abbey at this point. Also ... you notice how throughout the promotion of both movies you never see Michelle Dockery with Julian Fellowes. Not in interviews nor podcasts, or any of his "Fireside Chats"?
Sadly, Mary will be saddled to Henry Talbot for all time as a long and continuous punishment for the very underhanded and arrogant play that Dockery made to get her way.
I can only say that, as a fellow writer, I can only aspire to the level of pettiness that Fellowes has exhibited to people fucking with his narrative.

Hopkins could be seen wearing a thick wool coat as well as Freud's signature round spectacles and trilby hat.
After spotting the photographer, the Hannibal Lecter actor doffed his cap at his audience.
He could be seen alongside Goode, who is taking on the monumental role of Lewis, who is best known for penning The Chronicles of Narnia series.
The pair of British actors could be seen carrying out their scene while walking into a church, while carrying gas masks in their hands.
The upcoming film is based on the 2010 Mark St Germain play of the same name, which has hit stages around the world, including Off Broadway.
The synopsis for Freud's Last Session reads: "On the eve of the Second World War and the end of his life, Sigmund Freud (Hopkins) invites iconic author CS Lewis for a debate over the existence of God. Innovatively, the film explores Freud’s unique relationship with his lesbian daughter Anna, and Lewis’ unconventional romance with his best friend’s mother."
It adds: "Freud’s Last Session interweaves past, present and fantasy, bursting from the confines of Freud’s study on a dynamic journey."
Perhaps the most interesting part of this story is the diametrically opposed views held by the two men.

❤️📺Ten (ish) TV-shows I love❤️📺
Tagged by the lovely @renai-chan to do the 'Ten Movies I love' Tag Game.
I already did that, so allow me to redirect you to this post listing my ten movies, and this other one (a much much much much longer version, if you feel up to it).
However, after reflecting about which 10 movies I like the best –what a dilemma it was– I also thought about which 10 TV-shows are my comfort rewatches. I came up easily (surprisingly so) with the selection, so let me share that with you instead! 😊 ❤️
Xena: Warrior Princess
Tumblr media
The most badass warrior I have ever seen on TV. What a sight is Lucy Lawless, I fell in love with those gorgeous blue eyes since the moment my child eyes saw them… This tv-show is everything to me. Xena & Gabrielle, the purest soulmates. There were also lots of amazing characters and actors (Karl Urban and Kevin Smith, among others). Produced in New Zealand too… Which is so awesome! <3 (Strong opening theme!)
Stargate SG1/Atlantis
Tumblr media
MY FUCKING SCI-FY babies!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I can’t even tell you why I love these two TV-shows, because I got so overwhelmed about it! I. JUST. LOVE. THEM. SO. MUCH! (I actually watched several Stargate Atlantis episodes just before typing this list.) If you like the genre, GO.WATCH.THESE! (Amazing opening themes as well! <3)
Sabrina, the Teenage Witch (the 20-min-episode tv-show)
Tumblr media
I’ve watched every rerun on TV since it has been broadcasted. It is tied to my childhood, so I’m rather attached to it! I prefer this version over the more recent one, which is a bit too dark compared to the comedic one. Salem is so funny! He’s I-C-O-N-I-C! :P
Dr Quinn, Medicine Woman/// House MD
Tumblr media Tumblr media
My absolute two favourite tv-shows involving doctors… though they are very different from one another. Western drama vs. medical drama. It’s really not your typical medical show however.
A female physician from a 19th-wealthy family moving in the wild west to establish a practice. She feels very deeply and has a strong moral compass. The themes mentioned are quite serious (which I like) as you have, for instance, a close-minded-white-men little village, a woman working a man job, Cheyenne tribes being mistreated so are the black people and any other non-White people. Of course, it is still a tv-show, so I don’t how historically-accurate it is. But so not as sappy as Grey’s Anatomy if you know what I mean. 😊
AND the Sherlock doctor. Hugh Laurie is magnificent in this out-of-the-ordinary, junkie, snarky genius of a doctor!
Avatar: the Last Airbender
Tumblr media
Do I really need to spell it? MASTER OF THE ELEMENTS. AIRBENDING. WATERBENDING. FIREBENDING. EARTHBENDING. THIS IS SO FREAKING COOL!!!!!! The Legend of Korra is good too!
White Collar
Tumblr media
The adventures of an FBI agent and his con artist/thief consultant. YUP. It is as cool as it sounds. All the characters are lovely as well!
Downton Abbey
Tumblr media
THIS IS MY FAVOURITE BRITISH PERIOD DRAMA EVER. It is about the aristocratic Crawley family and their servants’ life during the earliest 20th century. The cast is realllllllllllllly good! A lot of good characters, strong episodes (very emotional sometimes)! Dame Maggie Smith is killing it as the Dowager Countess of Grantham, the sass in this character’s lines and faces!!!!! XD (Again, the opening theme is SO GOOD!)
Once Upon a Time
Tumblr media
A very nice tv-show where fairytales characters are transported into the real world because of a curse. The cast is INSANE! :O Nice revisit of famously known fairytales!!!! I have a thing for the accents…Well, there are a lot of different accents to listen to!
Lucifer
Tumblr media
It’s probably one of the last (new-ish) TV-show I’ve watched from the beginning to the end. The British (again with the accent) Devil’s adventures with the Detective (yeah… it’s her official name! XD). Very good chemistry between Tom Ellis and Lauren German! And the other characters are equally as good!!!!!!!!!
Prison Break
Tumblr media
Season 1 was the best. Truly. The idea was so original when the tv-show came out! Wentworth Miller’s acting is pure *chef’s kiss*. (That’s why I love Captain Cold so much btw, especially because Dominic Purcell is also his Rogues buddy in The Flash). Also, I’ve never loved the crookiest of the crook characters so much than how I love T-Bag. He’s the worst, but OMG his lines and mimicking (Robert Knepper did a fine job!)
As I already did the tagging before, I won’t do it again, but I let this open. Anyone feeling like talking about their comfort TV-shows are more than welcomed to do this “other version” of the tag game! 😉

10 CHARACTERS!
rules: pick 10 characters from 10 different fandoms and tag 10 people!
@justporo tagged me. Thank you! I'm just catching up from the holidays. 1. Astarion - Baldur's Gate 3 - in case you haven't noticed. I love this pile of pixels. He's an incredible character with such a moving story.
Tumblr media
2. Jericho Swain - The birdy daddy of League of Legends. Such an awesome design and concept. Empire Above All baby!
Tumblr media
3. Obi-Wan Kenobi - The consummate Jedi, a paragon of the light side. Obi-Wan took everything the dark side could throw at him and never waivered.
Tumblr media
3. Fulgrim - Warhammer 40K - Fulgrim's hubris and tragic downfall is one hell of a story and really drew me into the Warhammer universe.
Tumblr media
4. Korra - Avatar the Legend of Korra - I love both Avatar series but Korra's strength and will really moved me.
Tumblr media
5. Thor - Marvel - The blend of myth and modern superheroes always intrigued me. I felt for Thor's sincere efforts to better himself.
Tumblr media
6. The Phantom - Phantom of the Opera - The ultimate gothic romance, a tortured soul looking for someone to love. How can you resist?
Tumblr media
7. Starlight Glimmer - My Little Pony - Smart but so over everything. Starlight was always a mood. If we're talking main six, I was about Twilight Sparkle, but Starlight is my girl.
Tumblr media
8. Samwise Gamgee - Lord of the Rings - Sam is the friend we all need in our lives, and a better hero than most could ever hope to be.
Tumblr media
9. Anne Boleyn - The Tudors - Ever since I was a little girl, I've been obsessed with the tragedy of Anne Boleyn. She this figure in history yet I feel this great empathy for her.
Tumblr media
10. Lady Mary Crawley - Downton Abbey - Downton Abbey was one of my favorite shows of all time. I loved watching their journey through the world as it was modernizing. And watching Mary grow from heiress to paradigm changer.

Polls will start to be posted within the next week or so.
Bracket list under the cut!
UPDATE: LIST CANCELLED
*Starred shows have multiple theme songs or I have combined shows in a franchise in an effort to include as much as possible. These will have preliminaries built-into their polls on the first round. This is how it works: 1. all of the songs will go into a poll together against one other show; 2. the COMBINED votes for those songs will determine which show wins that poll; 3. only the top voted song for that show/franchise will move on, if the show has won the poll. (If you are confused it will make more sense when we start, I promise!)

Favorite emotional Whumps?
Oh gosh there are a lot. Do you want just my favorite tropes? Or do you want specific examples? You know I'll give you both.
Tropes:
panic attacks
nightmares
insecurities/feeling inadequate
fear
grief
flashbacks
flinching
emotional breakdowns full of sobbing
emotional outbursts
scar reveals
anxiety
self hatred
being afraid of one's powers
or losing one's powers and feeling helpless
hugging for whatever reason
Fav Emotional Whump Scenes (just a few of them and I forget episode numbers so sorry I didn't add them all)
Lucifer 1x04 scar reveal and flinching when Chloe touches them
Graceland 3x07 Mike's emotional breakdown when Charlie confronts him about his addiction
The Umbrella Academy when Klaus returns from Vietnam and is sobbing in the streets
Stargate SG-1 "Need" Daniels breakdown in the supply closet
One Day At A Time when Schneider relapses and he kinda crumbles into Penelope who hugs him and rubs the back of his head.
Downton Abbey when Thomas Barrow is curled on up on the ground outside in the rain sobbing because he's afraid after kissing Jimmy. Also that one end of an episode when Thomas is sitting alone in the servants quarters crying
Man of Steel. Clark Kent screaming in emotional pain when he was forced to kill Zod, the last member of his people
Obi Wan Kenobi. Really the whole show but that last confrontation with Vader nearly killed me.
Bridgerton 2x03 Anthony's panic attack and Kate calming him down. Also in 2x08 when he cries when hears Kate is okay
That moment in Spiderman No Way Home when Andrew's Spidey caught MJ and he nearly bursts into tears
The many panic attacks Gwyn Davies has in Legends of Tomorrow
Ted Lasso's panic attacks
Malcolm Bright's nightmare in the precinct in like the first episode of Prodigal Son
When Mark Watney in the Martian cries when he first hears the voices of his crew for the first time in years
Isaac Lahey's panic attack in the closet in Teen Wolf
Dwight Enys flinching in fear from his wife in Poldark because he has ptsd and she startled him
Yuki Sohma's panic attack when Akito comes to his school in Fruits Basket
God I know I'm forgetting some but these are the ones that immediately came to my mind.

My #1 post of 2022
Me: I can't make this character too capable and detailed, people will think she's a mary sue :(
The absolute chad, legend and icon Astrid Lindgren: Ok so here is my OC Pippilotta Viktualia Rullgardina Krusmynta Efraimsdotter Långstrump but you can call her Pippi Långstrump for short. She is only nine years old but she lives alone because her mother has died and her father has got lost at sea. And since she lives alone she can do whatever she wants, also she is so rich she never has to worry about money, she has a chest full of golden coins. Also she has a horse and a monkey. And Pippi lives in her own house called Villa Villekulla, she has red hair that defies gravity, and she is so nice that when it's her birthday she gives presents to her friends instead of wanting to receive them. She dresses super uniquely and this is her design, she looks super fun. She went to school once but she didn't like it so she never went again and everyone was fine with it. Oh, did I mention that she is the strongest girl in the world and can easily carry her horse around?

Burned By Lavender
by loveshazel
“I would have married you in a heartbeat… you know that, right?” Violet whispered.
“My darling, we can’t” Caitlyn merely whispered, forehead lightly touching that of her lover. “A woman marrying another woman, could you imagine the headlines?”
Violet’s eyes hardened as her forehead pressed harder against Caitlyn’s “And your answer to that is to marry a man?”
“You know I do not have a choice. Not in this time. Not in my position”
“I know” Violet placed a soft kiss on her lover’s lips before pulling away.
Caitlyn was breathtaking. Dressed in virgin white, her dark hair pinned up. A blushing bride in every sense of the word. Only she wasn't Violet's bride. And she never would be.

a reminder from my rules:
I’m mutuals only and VERY selective because I've exhausted my creativity when it comes to certain fandoms and relationships after writing Emma for so many years, there may be exception with some people I know but if you see me interact with a character from the 'no' list it doesn't mean it's now open for all. It's nothing to do with moral judgment though, just with me either not liking certain dynamics or having done enough of them.
You have a MULTI MUSE blog and need a hint about which muses I would want to rp with OR YOU WANT TO FOLLOW FIRST and aren't sure I'd be interested?
I can't list all of them but YES YES YES to fandoms like (or are similar to): For fantasy-Emma: The Witcher, Dragon Age (especially 1 and 3, I don't know 2 well but I'm okay with it), Lord of the Rings (movies), Doctor Who (very doable especially in her fantasy verse, because her universe is parallel to canon, her timeline was rewritten), Galavant, BBC Merlin, and surely many more than right now I can't think of. If we make it work with dimension-jumping to sci-fi/magic fandoms I adore Legends of Tomorrow, Buffy and Angel.
For non magical historical fandoms: Turn: Washington Spies, Marvelous Mrs. Maisel, Downton Abbey, Bridgerton and similar shows. Honestly if you are okay with me not knowing the show, I can work with all your Jane Austenish characters.
There is a modern Emma page for Chuck, Lost, Leverage and a few Marvel characters. Also made a The 100 full backstory. The 'personality' generic paragraph can be used for many sitcoms/dramedies/action shows too, skipping the rest, more details on that page.
Finally: in Once Upon a Time: only with Killian/Hook, David and Ingrid/Snow Queen, but there are rare exceptions for other characters, I'll let you know myself if yours is an exception so things don't get awkward with you asking and me saying no. NEVER with Regina nor oc family members. To avoid forcing her backstory on you if you write someone who is a part of it, like her father David, we can have a thread in which this Emma meets the canon one.
However (maybes and NOs):
-I don't write Emma with villains unless they are in redemption mode because she would attack them and choose not to interact (but I'm all for not confusing fiction and reality, writing a villain says nothing about you), exceptions can be made if we plot so that we aren't taking it too seriously and they won't be trying to hurt her and/or they aren't senselessly murdering and/or doing it for fun. This because I need to be certain that I'm not making you feel godmodded but also that I don't have to change Emma's entire personality.
-If your character is a stranger who wants her to go away she will, she's not going to beg for their attention, so I'll suggest reasons why they are stuck together, please don't take it as godmodding or wanting to control everything! She's got trauma, she's not begging villains to be nice either, so we have to find a compromise.
-No to horror, Game of Thrones which I don't know, and Harry Potter. No-ish to Marvel/DC due to writing in it too much (exceptions are on the modern page or yes list above). No to historical figures unless they are characters in a tvshow: as in yes if you rp as 'Queen Charlotte from Bridgerton' who is a fictional character inspired by the real woman but not meant to represent her accurately and simply follows a work of fiction, no to a fandomless Queen Charlotte meant to represent the real person.
-No to angels/demons/deities/myths, and to immortals besides the Doctor. Very very selective with vampires and other magical creatures, they often have an aesthetic that makes me uncomfortable or plots that aren't my cup of tea, Buffy/Angel are the exception, so please let me be the one asking or assume it's a no.
-No to children and teenagers besides the 100 (but she's a teen too) because I've done enough of those threads and I'm not interested in exploring them with Emma anymore.
