Nizar Qabbani lahir 23 Maret 1923 di Damaskus, Suriah, yang kini poranda karena perang saudara. Perjalanan hidupnya ditandai dengan petualangan dan kepedihan, serangkaian kejadian tragis dan memilukan. Ia hidup kesepian di pengasingan, anggota keluarganya meninggal dengan sebab yang memberatkan perasaan: saudara perempuannya bunuh diri karena kawin paksa dan anak lelakinya meninggal ketika kuliah kedokteran di Mesir. Istrinya, Balqis al-Rawi, seorang wanita Irak, terbunuh ketika Perang Sipil tahun 1981 berkecamuk di Libanon. Kesan mendalam atas tragedi-tragedi ini menuntun Qabbani menulis soal-soal perempuan, cinta dan pemberontakan. Puisi cinta Qabbani adalah puisi yang sederhana, langsung, jelas, kadang sedikit erotis namun tetap menyimpan kedalaman emosi. Bahasa keseharian diolah demi menghasilkan efek tertentu. Hal ini membuat puisi-puisi Qabbani kerap dipakai sebagai lirik para penyanyi Arab mulai dari Umm Kultsum, Farid al-Atrash hingga Magda Rouni dan Kazeem el-Sahir. Between you and me there are summer nights, a melody that I secretly dedicate to you, a series of flirtatious poems and the darkness of the night. இவரது கவிதைகள், காதல், காம உவகை, பெண்ணியம், அரபு தேசியம் மற்றும் ஆன்மீக கருத்துகளை எளிமையாகவும் ரசனையுடனும் வெளிப்படுத்தும் தன்மையுடையது. அரபு உலகின் மிக முக்கியமான கவிஞர். சிரியாவின் தேசிய கவியாக கருதப்பட்டவர்.

இவரது இளம் பருவத்தில், இவரது அக்கா, தான் காதலிக்காத ஒரு நபரை மணந்து கொள்ள மறுத்து தற்கொலை செய்து கொண்டார். அவரது மரணத்திற்கு சமூகத்தில் புரையோடியிருக்கும் பழமைவாதமும் பிற்போக்கு தனங்களுமே காரணம் என உணர்ந்து அதை எதிர்த்து போராட எண்ணம் கொண்டார்.

அரபு உலகில் காதல் என்பது சிறைபட்ட பறவை போல உள்ளது, அதை விடுதலை செய்ய விரும்புகிறேன் என்றார்.

அரபு மக்களின் ஆன்மா, உணர்வுகள், உடல்கள் ஆகியவற்றிற்கு கவிதைகள் மூலம் விடுதலை தேடுகிறேன். இந்த சமூகத்தில் ஆணுக்கும் பெண்ணுக்கும் ஆன உறவு என்பது ஆரோக்கியமற்ற ஒன்றாக உள்ளது.

இவரது கவிதைகள் காதல் மூலம் இறைமையை கண்டடையக் கூடியது.
