I don't know what has happened in fandoms in general. Maybe it's the past difficult years? I've been participating in fandom gift exchanges since 2007. Almost 20 years. In the last four gift exchanges, three ghosted me. I got only one gift.
This has never happened before. I've never been ghosted, not in big or small exchanges, not in any fandom. There has been delays which is completely understandable, or a pinch hitter has stepped in but now, nothing.
My friend also got ghosted last year in a gift exchange.
As fun as the gift exchanges are I have made my mind not to participate in them any more. I rather join weekly or monthly fan events.

I was curious to know, is there a specific adaptation of JTTW that you particularly enjoy? Whether its good or accurate isnt important but more like in your personal taste
AUGH going to be honest @seasonalsummers in that I don't feel like I can pick just one...there's so many excellent retellings! But I will take this opportunity to present some of my favorites.
So first up we have the 1986 Journey to the West tv series. It is in many ways very goofy and gaudy, but there's just as many reasons why it's considered one of the best retellings out there, from its genuine heart to the adherence to the og classic. And needless to say its Sun Wukong really set a standard for cheeky scheming monkey behavior. You can start watching it here:

Next up is 2016s The Monkey King 2. While this film is one of those retellings that gives the White Bone Demon a lot more prominence than she has in the og classic--and definitely has its own silly stupid moments--it also stands as one of the very few retellings that directly addresses the paradox of Tang Sanzang's mission: that he's trying to get the sutras to help mortals achieve a state of peace all while abhorring violence, and yet its only because of the violence of his disciples, especially Sun Wukong, that he's able to right a number of wrongs or simply go from day to day uneaten. And now it's time to give kudos to 2015's Monkey King: Hero Is Back. While this film is FAR from a faithful retelling and (usual refrain) has its own silliness, pretty simple plot, and gross-out humor, it also has so much heart and stands as a wonderful embodiment of the dad Wukong characterization. One also has to give it credit for its main child character, Jiang Liuer, being a genuinely charming kid who's wonder at the world and desire to do good drives the story forward in a sincerely lovely way. More recently--and in a work that is at best only loosely following the plot of Xiyouji--is 2022's Lighting Up the Stars. This film follows the story of a Li Nezha coded little orphan girl Wu Xiaowen and a Sun Wukong coded funeral director Mo Sanmei as they go from a very tense relationship to a genuinely loving father-daughter relationship. While there are moments of this film that feel kind of overwrought, it's an honestly wonderful exploration of what goes into dealing with death and the importance of love in all its many forms during life. I also have a soft spot for Mo Sanmei, who from what I've seen is the very peak of explicitly shitty cringefail loser who then genuinely works hard to become a better person Sun Wukong out there. Turning away from film and animation for a moment, I simply have to give proper kudos to Chaiko Tsai's comic The Monkey King. Between the gorgeous art, fun character designs, a good sense of how to translate many of the stories of Xiyouji into comic format, and a resolution to the Sun Wukong vs. Niu Mowang fight that I actually prefer above that in Journey to the West itself, this is definitely a comic worth going through! You can purchase it here for about $30.00
And last but certainly not least, one simply has to give due credit to 1964's Uproar in Heaven. It's an absolute gem of stylized Chinese animation, a work with the very rare allowance on the Monkey King getting to go full grandpa for tons upon tons of monkeys at Mt. Huaguoshan, and it's very faithful to the first half of the og classic with the difference that here Sun Wukong does his havoc in heaven and gets away with it. All around its a really fun work to watch and does have a lot of importance from both an animation and a historical perspective. You can watch it here:

So those are my favorite adaptations of Journey to the West! It's but a fraction of the adaptations out there, but I hope other people found these as fun as I do.

Guangyan is correct, these are all completed works 🥺
上上籤 Loss of The Holy Seal by YinYin. Only 5 chapters, I read the whole thing. Plot: Heaven is in a frantic mess due to the Holy Seal being lost in the mortal realm. Which uncovers a story about a water goddess, Ling Yu, who feels helpless when she can not help humans who are suffering from natural disasters. Set in modern day with Chinese mythical elements.
地獄遊行 lit. Hell Parade (no official English title I can find) by 布克 L.buBu (the artist is on tumblr @/lbubu) Plot: Fantasy setting. Protag Aili was born with incredible magician abilities compared to a lot of normals but he seems to be uninterested in his magician abilities to save the world.
異人茶跡 Formosa Oolong Tea by 張季雅 Kiya. Plot: The story revolves around the endeavours of John Dodd, a Scottish merchant, and his comprador Li Chunsheng, during the Qing Dynasty. It explores their significant contributions to the growth and establishment of the tea industry in northern Taiwan. This one is pretty good, if you're tea drinker this is some good history!
狗臉的歲月─記1629梯 My Life As A Dog by 李鴻欽 Li Hong Chin. Plot: The main protagonist enlists in the army and tells a story of his time there. This one isn't my thing but Yiyong probably likes a bit of a "lad" comic.
閻王帖 Invitation of Yama by 柚子 You Zih. This one is fun I like it, it reminds me of Hoozuki No Reitetsu and Fukigen Na Mononokean. The protagonist possesses Ying Yang eyes meaning he can see ghosts. After an accident, he meets a guy who wears a mask and is a worker in the underworld. Mask guy's weapon is a massive calligraphy brush!
無名歌 lit. Untitled Song by ROCKAT 搖滾貓. This one is on webtoon! Protagonist Taiyang had a rock music dream, now as a "failure" adult he works in an entertainment company as a manager. He bumps into a girl busking on the street who happened to recognise him from his early music days and has every album (2) his band and him once produced. Then onwards he rediscovers his love for music... probably, I didn't finish it lol

Okay I did read this one though, even though I'm not sure if Yiyong has it or not:
守娘 Tan-Tsiu-Niu by 小峱峱 Nownow. This is a phenomenal heavy read. It's inspired by Tan Tsiu Niu, a women who lived in the Qing Dynasty that died of a tragic murder. Story has themes of folklore, ghosts and superstitions. Main protagonist Jie Niang grew up in a family who did not force foot binding onto her, however that caused a lot of gossip around her "big feet" and how she could ever get married off like that. Through an incident of a women in her village, she begins to uncover what horrors the villagers have been doing to baby girls and women. Let's just say I'm not the same person after reading this.

how did you first get into fandom? Back when I was living in Glasgow, Scotland, it was my 21st birthday, and my friends and I were going to see a horror movie. Turned out, the tickets were sold out, so we decided to see Star Trek XI. I’d NEVER watched Trek in my life, didn’t know a thing about it, and when I walked out of that theater I was a totally changed human and now I am a Trek Encyclopedia LOL
how long have you been engaging with fandom spaces? Since 2009, so like 14 years.
how often do you read fanfics? Every day, if my brain is healthy enough that day! I sometimes take breaks of a couple months and only read published books though, I feel I get a different experience from both that I can equally appreciate.

share a personal headcanon that you feel very strongly about: Ian loves his mom more than he feels comfortable saying, because he feels like it's a family and even personal betrayal. I think it’s impossible to accurately describe how to feels to grow up with an abusive parent who vacillates wildly between adoring and abusive, but there’s no feeling quite like loving and hating your parent, desperately wishing you could be what they wanted so they’d stay, and hoping you never see them again. I know we’ve seen Ian follow Monica more than any other kids, but I think that any time he curses her out to his siblings or whoever else, each bad word is also like a self-cut.
you’re trying to convince a friend to get into your current fandom(s) If for My Hero Academia, I would have them watch the Heroes Rising movie, for Shameless I don’t even KNOW where I’d begin tbh LOL
and finally, what does fandom mean to you? Fandom is family! I’ve been in fandom for fourteen years, and I have so so so many real life friends who have been with me through literally the hardest parts of my life. My divorce, my ex husband going to prison, the birth of my child, me being a single parent, moving back to America, my coma, my kidney transplant. My fandom friends from across the world have uplifted me and been my support system through every single high and low. I don’t know how I’d be here without them, quite literally.

Unshakable Faith (2023)
Episode 13 Breakdown
Truck driver Lai Guangrun hears the police kicking in doors and flees. They find the radio and his notebook left behind and search outside for him. Officer Hongmei finds a pen on the ground but is scuttled by a falling crate and the truck driver narrowly gets away, hiding in storm drain from the police team.
Ji Danyang and one of the technical experts inspect the speaker that was reversed into a microphone, and test it out with Police Captain Chen. During the test Ji Danyang jokes about Officer Hongmei being excellent at investigating but terrible at taking care of herself, knowing she will be listening on the other end. The police suspect the eavesdropper is likely Zhou Jun the painter, due to the style of the handwriting in the notebook.
Expert He Xiwan jokes with Ji Danyang about their nonsense speeches ruining the experts meeting, but thanks him for trusting her and Ji Danyang visits the construction site to meet Niu Peixian, the Master Welder, for help creating a vital submarine component.
Officer Hongmei found out that her bracelet was crushed for testing and Ji Danyang runs off after promising to replace it. Police Captain Chen is impressed when Officer Hongmei admits that getting a replacement bracelet means they will have found the rutile the experts need and she's just pushing him along.
Truck driver Lai Guangrun visits Dr Bai to treat his foot and congratulate him for retrieving the box from the well. Dr Bai says he just wants to live a simple life but is told that you can't erase your past, and is threatened to be exposed. Their conversation is cut short when Nurse Bai comes home and tells them that she will be going up Dongshan mountain again with Ji Danyang the following day.
The next morning Officer Hongmei swaps escort duty with Officer Ding. Dr Bai asks Nurse Bai to deliver some medicine across town before her outing which makes her late, and Ji Danyang and Officer Ding go ahead without her.
Dr Bai intercepts the truck driver Lai Guangrun on Dongshan mountain and refuses to rejoin the cause unless Snow Wolf meets him face to face, but is told he has to prove his trust before they can meet. Lai Guangrun indicates to kill Ji Danyang while he's up the mountain.
Nurse Bai's finishes her task and races up Dongshan to catch up with Ji Danyang, meeting a woodcutter along the way who tells her that her father is on the mountain too.
Ji Danyang spots a large deposit of rutile down a cliffside and Officer Ding climbs down a vine to investigate it, leaving him alone at the top where the truck driver knocks him unconscious. Dr Bai refuses to shoot him, settling to make it look like an accident by pushing him over the cliff when Lai Guangrun threatens Nurse Bai. Officer Ding climbs back up the vine to find only a patch of blood on the rock and Nurse Bai arrives at the mountain base to find Ji Danyang bleeding and unconscious, and flags down a passing truck to rush him to the hospital.

It's good to see Officer Hongmei and our math man talking on better terms, even if Ji Danyang's guilt is getting the better of him. But he desperately needs some poker face lessons from Police Captain Chen, because our math man can't lie worth a damn.
I want to know how this truck driver with his fractured foot is able to jump out the freaking window and evade the police team. In fact, I want to know how he was able to slip in and out of Zhang A Shui's hospital room with a newly injured foot! At least his eavesdropping operation is overturned even if he wasn't caught, but fuck him for choosing to target our math man!

niuhou for ship opinions?
Aroace Sun Wukong truther though I am, in all honesty anon the niuhou ship is one of my favorites in the jttw fandom <3.
It's true that in Xiyouji itself we don't get a super in-depth amount of space dedicated to the details of their relationship when they were sworn brothers, but there is a real sense that they genuinely liked AND respected each other. And that's a feeling that's really increased when we see their reunion later on during the journey, when even with an absence of over 500 years and a lot of reasons for antagonism for the both of them (the Demon Bull King wants to eat Tang Sanzang & otherwise hinder Sun Wukong's journey, Sun Wukong played a major role in getting Red Boy captured by the Bodhisattva Guanyin & caused Princess Iron Fan a lot of physical pain), both spend quite a few pages dancing around whether they're going to attack the other because of their former strong bond until things irrevocably crumble. Wu Cheng'en even dedicates an entire poem to how tragic this break-up is (and how epic the resulting fight was lol).
But probably best of all for me is that this is one of those ships where both characters really get to shine through as their own individual people with rich stories. When you look at other ships involving the Monkey King (especially the tons of movies with a SWK romance) it tends to be the case where the romantic partner in question seems to revolve their entire life and personality around old Monkey in one way or another, usually with a heavy dose of "being eternally patient & forgiving no matter how much shit he gives them" and also ending with the fate of them dying so that he can be sad/having to Learn a Lesson. So yeah said "romantic partners" often feel more like hollow shells or desperate obsessives than full people.
Which to put it academically sucks major balls.
With Niuhou, however, that's not the case at all! Obviously a good chunk of Xiyouji is dedicated to Sun Wukong's character and his multitude of complexities and development, but even in the few chapters we see him the Demon Bull King really stands out as one of the yaoguai kings who had a very active life after the Mt. Huaguoshan war with heaven, doing everything from gathering wealth, allies, power, and friends to getting married and having a child that he very much loves to then having a falling out with Princess Iron Fan because he took on a concubine with Princess Jade Countenance. He's also described as being just as powerful as the Monkey King (while also being stockier), and his rage really is something that can shake the Heavens! It all makes for a very involved part of the journey, ranging from Sun Wukong and numerous gods having to go to battle against a colossal Niu Mowang to the Demon Bull King calling time-out on a preliminary fight because he wanted to go party with some of his dragon friends.
And as a final bonus this is also one of those rare ships involving the Monkey King where he's actually very obviously invested in maintaining it, from being his active and ambitious social self as a warlord to trying every which way to get what he needs from the Demon Bull King to continue the journey while still maintaining his bond with Niu Mowang. And while it does end in tragedy, you do have the delight of thee Monkey King approaching the situation like "PLEASE bestie my beautiful princess with a disorder PLEASE remember what we mean to each other!!!" And then the Demon Bull King being like "me remembering that is the only reason why I haven't killed you where you stand."

Happy Gushiwensday Shabbes!! We come with a lovely poem by Du Mu: "Double Ninth, Climbing Qi Hill."
The river holds a mirror up to autumn, when wild geese first fly south.
My guests and I carry pots of wine up Chizhou's humble blue hill.
In this earthly life it's hard to find good companions to talk and laugh with--
you must cover yourself in chrysanthemums and return with your hair full of flowers!
We'll get drunk and entertain ourselves for the Double Ninth festival--
no point in climbing scenic overlooks just to mourn the setting of the sun.
Since when? Since forever! This is the only way things can be.
Should I climb Mount Niu all alone and soak my clothes in tears?

九日齐山登高
江涵秋影雁初飞，与客携壶上翠微。
尘世难逢开口笑，菊花须插满头归。
但将酩酊酬佳节，不用登临恨落晖。
古往今来只如此，牛山何必独霑衣。
This is a poem about the Double Ninth festival, observed around October on the ninth day of the ninth month. It's traditional to climb mountains, plant dogwood, and drink chrysanthemum wine or tea. Some people also visit their family's graves, so the mix of joy and remembrance of death kind of reminds me of the High Holy Days! Anyway here are my notes.
holds a mirror up --- the river 涵秋影 "contains autumn's reflection/shadow." I originally had this as "holds autumn's reflection" but the pun with holding a mirror was too cute to say no.
Chizhou's humble blue hill --- Chizhou isn't mentioned in the poem, but it's the city the Du Mu was governor of at the time and 齐山 Qi Hill is in the middle of the city. So this is more of a fun evening out with friends than climbing a mountain. Here he refers to it as 翠微, "blue-green and small."
it's hard to find... laugh with --- I think it's hilarious how different in tone Laurence's and my translations are here. I interpreted 难逢开口笑 very literally: difficult to come across [people with whom to] start to talk and laugh. I wrote this from the perspective of someone who was lucky enough to find good friends.
setting of the sun --- I gather that this isn't a usual phrasing for sunset; 落晖 could be literally translated as sinking sunlight or sinking splendor. It gives a very clear image of something that's incredibly beautiful but also about to end. Which is fun because one of the things you do on Double Ninth is remember your loved ones who have passed.
Mount Niu --- an allusion to what seems to be a personal motif of Duke Jing of Qi, who (according to Gushiwen) climbed 牛山 Mount Niu to mourn that he would soon die and afterward used the location as poetic shorthand for grieving the ephemerality of life.

Summary:

Fortunately, Nezha arrived in time and rescued Yao Ji's children Yang Jian (Jiao Enjun) and Yang Chan (Zhou Yang) from the Jade Emperor's butcher knife. After growing up, Yang Jian became the apprentice of Daoist Taiyi and acquired an amazing ability. Yang Jian wanted to save his mother, but he didn't expect that the Jade Emperor sent ten suns to burn Yao Ji to death. The angry Yang Jian made a big disturbance in the heavenly court, and the Jade Emperor sent out a flood. However, the water did not drown Yang Jian, but fell into the mortal world. Yang Jian is determined to let go of his grievances with the Jade Emperor first, and go to the world to control the water with his sister.

Time for some Murder Drones Next Gen lore dump!
-Disassembly Drones are taller than Workers in every single life stage. Especially than Kel. (She just happened to inherit Uzi's smolness :3)
-Disassembly Drone kids were designed to get they're weaponry and wings over time. (The only weapon they get from there droneling body is they're tail. Because let's be real a 5-years-old with full access to every weapon ever exist is terrifying.)
-Vixen's hair was originally very similar to V's. However everything changed when she got her claw.exe downloaded. And you know what happens when little kids got they're hands on scissors, right? Fortunately N was able to fix it! (After getting over the trauma he and V got.) And It ended up suiting her more than her previous one.
-Also why Kel doesn't have hair? Because the whole idea of the dronelings came creativeskullcreations, and they said so.
-Niu experiences childhood love, while Kel shows him her first ever hand made guitar. Vixen, upon finding out, LOVES to tease her "baby brother" about it, to Niu's annoyance.

After the release of Ruiyang Niu's previous album "The Guilt of Hand Cream", Ruiyang Niu continued to delve into Lofi Beat and Jazzy Hip Hop, and released this surprising album in mid 2023.
This album uses music to construct a grand underwater world, and uses synthesizer elements to evoke people's infinite imagination about the ocean.
In the mid-20th century, capitalism prevailed, and the living space of the middle and lower classes in society sharply narrowed, causing a large number of ordinary people to take risks. The "Underwater Rambler" has become a hot profession in the gold miner industry.
Just like high-risk and high-reward pirates, Underwater Ramblers receive generous rewards by transporting prohibited items on the seabed, avoiding strict regulations. Ruiyang Niu is one of the so-called underwater wanderers.
In 2049, Ruiyang Niu's son Niu Jack was born. In order to support the young children, Niu joined the team of Underwater Ramblers to transport the "ZetarTech Manufacturing Righteous Body".

The villagers have no fixed rest time and rely on primitive fishing and hunting to survive without external interference. This place is rich in resources and was once referred to as a "paradise" by Underwater Ramblers.
