Fortitude: A C!Nikki Poem

notes: I’ve been perfecting this one! It’s based off of my second favorite Major Arcana card, Fortitude (or Strength). The classic Rider-Waite illustration usually has a woman reaching for a lion that has closed its mouth, representing a mutually beneficial wisdom in both strength and tenderness. In other decks, this duality is represented in many ways. My herbalism deck has honey and garlic in various combinations. and idk, Niki and Techno remind me of that card. Anyhow, here’s the poem!

When you, the Baker, met the Poet,

Maybe you expected harmony and home,

With the best of the fire reserved for the hearth,

Because balance demands growth

And your fire has never consumed the bread before,

Blackened its surface,

Except this one time.

And it only takes once.

Lion’s main turned to flames

Burned your hands to the bone and

Your cries of pain were too small to hear.

A lot of his friends were just so loud, weren’t they.

That’s what you blamed, at first.

Always the screaming and yelling and swearing and fightingAnd explosions and fire, fire, fire,

Drowning out what should have been you,

The reason you chose not to sing anymore.

But then the smoke burned your lungs

And you couldn’t sing even if you wanted to.

Then you were quieter than before.

Quieter and smaller and digging yourself deeper into your hole,

Safe because it was far from the sky,

Unfit to light a fire even for food.

And then people found you

They had fire and explosions too, but

They still heard you even over their own laughter.

That’s when you knew that a man who loved words and freedom so

Should have known how to listen.

And then the balance began to be struck

A Boar closed his mouth before you,

And you put the bread back in the brick oven

And lit a fire to be gentle and all-consuming,

And you started baking again.

1984 Interview with Niki Lauda (in English)

A very personal interview with Niki Lauda, and my personal favorite interview of his. Niki talks about his childhood, his start in Formula 1, and his philosophy on life. He describes his 1976 accident, as well as the details of his physical and emotional recovery to his eventual comeback in F1. He talks about his marriage to Marlene, and how he balances racing with his responsibility as a father. Niki also explains his coping mechanism of removing emotion from Formula 1.

I think this may be the only interview where I have seen Niki go very in depth about his crash and recovery. He really opens up about how extremely difficult and emotional his recovery was. Niki never gets emotional in interviews, but after he finishes explaining his suffering in the hospital and how the doctors told Marlene that he was going to die, he looks so vulnerable. It's the only time I have ever seen that expression of pain and vulnerability on his face.

Niki, you're such a strong hero to many, and your courage is admirable. We will miss you, champion.

You sit down in the living room just letting the day go by. You have no plans, and don’t really have anything to do. Which makes the day extra slow. You wish you weren't just wasting the day but you just can’t find anything to do… until, “y/n!” you turn your head to see niki standing there with 2 organizers in her hands. “Yeah niki?” she places down the organizers on the couch and sits next to you, “can I do your makeup? I think it will be fun!!” you think about it and shrug, “yeah, sure” you have nothing to do anyways so why not, it seems fun anyways.

She smiles at your response and starts to grab some things from her organizers. You turn to face her to make it easier for her to start. By the look of it, she is going for something quite natural, it puts your small amount of worry to ease. You relax as she looks at you. She starts with your eyes, she has her mascara in hand. “Close your eyes” she speaks softly as she moves closer, she places one of her hands on your chin to make it easier.

“Keep them closed” she says as softly as before, now you feel something being put on around your eyes, eyeliner you supply for yourself. You feel a little shiver run up your back. It feels super cold, it makes her laugh a bit. You can tell she is trying to hold it, most likely to prevent her from messing up. It was obvious she knew exactly what she was doing, it’s probably her own routine, something natural yet beautiful and noticeable. “Ok you can open them” you open them, and see her now grabbing her blush, and a thick brush from her side.

You both smile as she puts the blush on you. It feels slightly ticklish so you start to laugh, “it tickles” you try and get out through the laughs, she giggled at you as she puts blush on your other cheek, “i know but you need to stay still” she says laughing with you. Before she finishes with your blush she taps some blush on your nose making it twitch. Lastly she grabs a light, yet noticeable lip stick. She smiles as she puts some on your lips, “all done!” she exclaims as she grabs a mirror and holds it to you, “what do you think?” you think it looks amazing.
