I had some important decisions to make the past weeks, one of them is that I want to learn more about amphibians specifically because I love them so much and know so little.

As a token of that, please enjoy some toads (with so many eggs! So much spawn!) and newts! Bufo bufo and Lissotriton vulgaris, I believe. I found them in a vernal pool among some fossilized sea floor (See my other posts for more pictures of that)! There were so many amphibians there, I have not seen that many in one place in ages. It is in a nature reserve :)

He’d never forget the next look that had come over Newt’s face. When Thomas asked why Newt and some others didn’t just go into the Maze and search for their friends, Newt’s expression had changed to outright horror—his cheeks had shrunk into his face, becoming sallow and dark. It gradually passed, and he’d explained that sending out search parties was forbidden, lest even more people be lost, but there was no mistaking the fear that had crossed his face. Newt was terrified of the Maze. Whatever had happened to him out there—maybe even related to his lingering ankle injury—had been truly awful.

The way that newt was so afraid makes me want to cry. It makes me realize how traumatizing it is for him. How much it must trigger him.

Someone was not happy about getting their picture taken!

This was only one of at least 15 newts that I saw while on a while on a walk through the botanical gardens, some were smooth newts still in their terrestrial colours (brown with darker spots) and these are the beautiful alpine newts. You can differentiate them by their spotless, bright orange bellies.

Did you know in their terrestrial juvenile stage they are called 'efts'?

Probably going to towel Toto this weekend and just reset the nails. The right foot has gone down quite a bit and could likely reset itself to a healthy length but that left foot isn’t even showing a rounded tip so I don’t think it’s contacting the pedi perch correctly to make any real progress. Wouldn’t bother me that much if he didn’t spend so much time on the back of the couch, it’s a flat surface and his toes are having to twist a lot to compensate + he kept stepping on his own toes because of it.

I didn’t want to have to terrorize him but at least this will bring everything back to square one and hopefully his activity level and pedi perches will maintain them the way that Newt’s do so I won’t have to grab him again and his feet can feel a lot better.

#I only cut newts nails like one or twice a year at this point t #so much running around in the bird rooms just keeps them maintained on their own #Toto
