If you’re born in a cubicle and grow up in a corridor, and work in a cell, and vacation in a crowded sun-room, then coming up into the open with nothing but sky over you might just give you a nervous breakdown.

"It’s long been supposed that implants could connect prosthetics to the brain in a way that stimulates nervous system commands with electrical signals.
Now, this idea is closer than ever to realization in a meaningful way, as one man paralyzed from the hips down is able to walk unsupported, even up stairs, thanks to such electrical nerve stimulation.
The patient, Gert-Jan Oskam, lost all movement in his legs after suffering a spinal cord injury in a motorbike accident. After using a precursor technology to gain back a little bit of mobility, Oskam enrolled in a proof of concept study to perhaps make further advances...
Now, with an implant in his brain, when Oskam thinks about moving his legs, it sends a signal to a computer he wears in a backpack that calculates how much current to send to a new pacemaker in his abdomen. It in turn sends a signal to the older implant in his spinal cord that prompts his legs to move in a more controllable manner. A helmet with antennae helps coordinate the signals.
The scientists developing the technology and working with him detail that he can walk around 200 meters a day, and stand unassisted for around 2-3 minutes. Once, Oskam details, there was some painting that needed to be done, but no one was around to help him. With the new technology, he simply took his crutch and did it himself.
Incredibly, after less than a year, and completely unexpectedly, scientists believe the technology closed the gap in his nervous system, and he can now lift himself out of a chair, and even walk with the help of a crutch, even when the device is turned off.
The scientists are planning in the future to work with patients with paralyzed arms and hands, and even with stroke victims, as the “digital bridge” is a massive advancement in nervous system stimulation technology."

I'm in need of advice, reddit hasn't been helpful and I'm desperate so I've come to you Tumblr please help me
I'm currently a data scientist for a very small start up company, but I have my background in political science and so I'm concerned that I might be dead in the water if/when the company goes under and I need to find another job. I've consulted with some recruiters and they agree that if I want to go into data science I should get my master's (EDIT: they said I probably should get my degree in Statistics because the program is more widely known so I have a better chance of not getting turned away by HR who will have less knowledge about what a data science master's even is). I think because of my personality, data science is a really good job for me, so I'm planning on going for it.
Here's the issue: I don't want to go to school and end up learning exclusively theory. I've been teaching myself a ton by reading textbooks and I've noticed that while there's a lot of depth in the math/calculus/linear algebra behind how the functions work and what the parameters are, there seems to be very little information on how to actually apply that information in the real world.
Obviously the math is important and very exciting :D but if all I do is learn the math and I don't learn how to apply the knowledge I have to non-ideal data sets and situations then I'm not really learning the information I need to know.
Are there any graduate programs that are well known for really preparing people for data science roles in the workforce instead of just focusing on the academic side of statistics?

THIS SHEEPY IS CREEEEEEPPPPPYYYYYYYY!!!!!
Me, Sheep, 2023, Mixed Media (Polymer Clay, Air Dry Clay, Modeling Paste, Acrylic Paint, Paint Markers, Embroidery Thread, Clear Gloss, Acrylic Yarn, and Glue mounted on Glass)
i think that's everything anyways...
The only piece mounted on the glass is the brain; all others are individually removable
~more and bigger pictures and reflections under the cut!~
as much as i love the clean glass look, every time i picked it up i had cuts all over my hands so that'll have to be for pictures only LOL. it does look nice in the frame (don't have a picture so you'll have to take my word for it) i just wish it was a bit thinner.
i tried to make it as anatomically correct as possible but 1) i was working on a very strict deadline (one week!), 2) my reference materials weren't the greatest, and 3) it needed to be strong enough to be moved around. mostly the skull is what pisses me off in this regard. i also want to go back and clean up the edges and such at some point. at some point i think i'll buy some heavy duty magnets so the skin and bones and such don't just... slip and slide around. i like the look without them, but i really wanted this piece to be interactive when it's on display next year and that's just not feasible when pieces can fall and such. i was going to do everything that you might see when you cut a sheep in half (do not try this at home!), but i decided that would take the focus away from the nervous system which is what i really wanted to focus on.
in my mind this sheep is still alive and we simply have magical x-ray vision that we use to see through it however i have gone in and tagged it with gore anyways. sorry it took so long!!
i also have work in progress pictures! if you guys want to see them, let me know. i can't add any more photos in this post.
