Texas Chainsaw Massacre (2022)
Tumblr media
A film doesn't need to be “good for you” to be good. Look at 1974's The Texas Chain Saw Massacre for example. It’s horrifying and unsettling. That’s the point. That’s what makes it great. Nearly 50 years later, it still terrifies while its long lineage of sequels, prequels, remakes, and reboots continuously disappoint. Attempting to imitate David Gordon Green’s Halloween (2018), 2022’s Texas Chainsaw Massacre promises much and then fails to deliver in every department except for one.
In 2022, young entrepreneurs Melody (Sarah Yarkin) and Dante (Jacob Latimore), along with Melody’s sister Lila (Elsie Fisher) and Dante’s fiance Ruth (Nell Hudson) have purchased the abandoned Texas town of Harlow so they can sell the properties and create a trendy, gentrified hot spot. They didn’t expect anyone to be living in the dilapidated buildings, much less an elderly woman named Ginny (Alice Krige) and the mentally stunted, murderous man in her care (Mark Burnham) - the culprit behind a 1973 bloodbath we call The Texas Chainsaw Massacre.
If you want gore, this movie has it by the truckload. Despite being what? 70? 80 years old? Leatherface effortlessly turns everyone into pools of chunky salsa. Via his trademark chainsaw, of course, but also using hammers, knives, shards of glass, meat cleavers, and people’s own broken limbs. I believe David Blue Garcia was aiming to make this man who wears human skin for a mask seem demonically strong but the movie takes it to such an extreme it feels more like this story is set in a calcium-deficient universe.
Get ready to follow some of the dumbest horror movie protagonists you’ve met in a while. Now let me be clear. I’m not criticizing Dante for going into a house he believes is abandoned to look for important paperwork. He saw the two weirdos living there leave. He doesn’t know he’s in a horror movie whose antagonist can teleport and make his chainsaw silent if the scene demands it to be. I am calling him and his friends stupid for their complete lack of preparation, forethought, or common sense. When you have an entire town of dusty buildings to sell, you don’t show up 15 minutes before your potential buyers do. You case the joint, you make sure nothing is going to interfere with your big venture. When something goes wrong and the old lady who wasn’t supposed to be there has a heart attack, you don’t follow her and the police up to the hospital because, why would you? You don’t insult the guy brandishing a gun when you’re in the middle of nowhere with no authorities to be found - not if you want to live anyway.
Aside from the nauseatingly convincing viscera and blood, there’s only one thing this movie does somewhat well. Even then it's so scattered, I'm certain it was by accident. This movie is set in the present when people have cell phones, v-logs, and eagerly pull out their cameras whenever they see anything remotely dodgy. I’ve often criticized horror movies for finding contrived ways to get rid of their devices and/or signals. In TCM, Leatherface stumbles upon a big group of people. They’re frightened and puzzled, they pull out their phones and warn him with cancellation if he steps forward. It doesn’t go well for them. There’s a kernel of a good idea there. Yes, you can call the police, you can record evidence, you can do all sorts of things but they won't help you right there and then if your assailant doesn’t care. At that moment, the movie has sort of cracked a slasher movie problem. The police are on their way. They’ll be here in 30 minutes. Just in time to scoop what’s left of you into a Ziplock bag. The rest of the time, however, people just forget they have phones. No one calls for help, no one texts their friends to let them know “I’m trapped in this house and there’s a hulking lunatic in here with me, if you come in, make sure you do it quietly!” We know there isn’t a police officer within the surrounding 50 miles, but they don’t!
At face value, Texas Chainsaw Massacre seems similar to 2018’s Halloween. Both ignore all of the previous chapters except for the original and bring back the lone survivor so she can face the demon that’s plagued her all of these years by putting him to rest once and for all. Both are significantly more brutal and violent than their ancestors. The difference is that Laurie Strode was a memorable character we grew attached to and that her (still ongoing) struggle against The Shape/Michael Myers feels like it's going somewhere new. TCM just wants to restore the status quo so it can pump out more gruesome sequels - the post-credit scene confirms this.
Texas Chainsaw Massacre is indistinguishable from the later Friday the 13th films, or any other randomly chosen slasher flick. The staggering body count might please gorehounds. For everyone else, it's a depressing, pointless film with nothing to say and no imagination, whatsoever. (May 13, 2022)

Casida IV
Federico Garcia Lorca

It’s not grief, [...] it’s more like a haunting. Our Wives Under The Sea
“Is it crazy to love someone you’ve only spent seven days with in person?” / “No, it’s crazy to love someone when you’ve known them for years.” Luckenbooth
It seemed, at times, that this was the only way the world would be remade as the heroes had dreamed: one woman holds another woman, and she in turn lifts the world. Cantoras
By then, Lola concluded that love was mostly wanting something you supposedly already had. A Tiny Upward Shove
She never dwelt on my lapses, and I couldn’t entirely parse why this made me feel so awful. There’s a low-level, specific pain in having to accept that putting up with you requires a certain generosity of spirit in your loved ones. Sea of Tranquility
Then it came to me, my life. I remembered my life / the way an ax handle, mid-swing, remembers the tree. / & I was free. Time Is A Mother

There’s always a way out. You could be a ghost. I could be an empty chair. Marriage of a Thousand Lies
Everything would turn out fine. Or else--hell--it would burn. I only wanted my body to bloom and bleed and be loved. I was raw with want, but in part it was a simple want, one made for easy satisfaction, quick drama, deep life: I wanted to go places and do things with Sils. So what if the house burned down. Who Will Run the Frog Hospital?

What is Tea but Love in A Cup? Hope.
Pretty sure it's midnight now...Happy birthday, @darcyfangirlsfrequently ! Here is your present. Fluffy angsty not smutty Garvez. wc: 2,623 ao3
Every day Luke brings Penelope tea. It’s something he started doing regularly since her return...something he started doing since that day.
Privately, it’s the best part of his day, those few minutes they spend just the two of them.
Sometimes it’s in a thermos from home like that first time, sometimes it’s in one of her favorite mugs from the collection that’s slowly been accumulating in the cupboards again and made in-office, but regardless of where it steeps, by 10:30am he always makes sure there’s hot tea in her hands.
These past few years of remoteness and restriction, forced solitude, had worked slowly to expose deep in himself what he valued, what he needed, and what he wasn’t willing to give up so easily on any longer, so no matter what he’s doing, by 10:20 Luke excuses himself and makes his way to her.
She didn’t like to work in her cave anymore he’d noticed. She worked in there as little as possible these days, preferring the bright natural lighting of one of the spare offices near Rossi and Prentiss to the dark, isolated space that was her high-tech hollow. He wasn’t sure what it was; if the place held too many lifetimes she’d shed when she left, or if it was haunted by memories she’d rather not be reminded of, if she just missed everyone and wanted to be closer, or if she felt more safe, secure, tucked between two agents. Maybe it was all of those things, maybe it was none of them. Maybe she just didn’t like the space anymore (despite the cleansing), but whatever it had been she didn’t feel the need to elaborate, and no one asked.
Carrying “Nancy” a large porcelain mug in the shape of a magenta unicorn leaping out of a curling white cloud (tail making up the handle, naturally), Luke climbed the stairs to the catwalk across the office. Giving a brief knock he sang out her name in greeting, “Pen-nell-O-pea” and peered into the room only to find it empty of both Penelope, and any sign she’d been there.
Perplexed, he backed out. He knew she was here today, he remembered the new shoes she was wearing vividly, exceptionally short dress paired with the especially steep arch adding that much more draw and definition to her already arrestingly shapely spade calves…not that he was looking at her legs.
They were the oddest translucent cranberry platform heels he’d ever seen. Constructed entirely of plastic cut-out hearts, they looked like gummy candy, but they obviously had to of been made from something more substantial...even if they did appear to be particularly tempting and sexy edible playthings rather than actual footwear. They were also hands down the most garish shoes he’d ever seen, and having grown up in 70s-90s Brooklyn, that was saying a lot. But they completed her outfit; big red felt heart earrings, sky blue a-line mini dress with sprinkles of large cupids and arrows all over it, those shoes, and a matching ruby cardigan delicately keeping her within dress code. Delicately keeping her on the verge of his mind.
Luke decided if she wasn’t here, he’d track her down.
His skill as a hunter was sorely underutilized in this particular search however as she happened to be in the second place he went looking, the second most obvious place as he passed back through the Penelope-less bullpen and the Garcia-barren halls to her tech office. This time, there was no knock preceding his entrance, instead, he started with concern, a soft “Hey, you okay?” brokering his arrival. She hadn’t been in here in weeks, but now suddenly, she was back.
The doors were open, he could see her sitting on the low plush settee, computer in lap, fingers tirelessly tapping. She didn’t look up, but chirped back, “Agent Alvez, welcome back to my currently lesser used, but none-the-less beloved temple of knowledge.” With some finalizing clicks, Penelope moved the laptop to the cushion on her opposite side and canted her head, indicating she was waiting for him to join her.
Luke entered taking the seat next to her, his right arm wrapping around her shoulders, his left crossing his body to place the cup in her waiting hands. Penelope, familiar to the routine now, was already pillowing her head to his chest as he pulled her in further, kissing her forehead and running his hand up and down her cardigan clad arm.
“There a reason you’re working in here today…or maybe one for why you haven’t been?” He had long ago let her know he would gladly be the person she came to if things were wrong, and for a brief time, she confided in him, let him be that person for her…but since her return it had been a bit off…he still was that person, but she always qualified it now with some cutting list of who didn’t have time for her, or why she couldn’t go to anyone else.
Excuses, he told himself.
Penelope didn’t respond, opting instead to relax the full weight of her head on his shoulder, to feel his support. The cup balanced on her thighs, hands framing the heat radiating from it. There’s no one else she’d rather be there right now.
She wasn’t thinking about his question, just him being there, him having been there, his unwavering consistency, their everyday little break and check-in, how lucky they’ve been that the team hasn’t been called away, how lonely it will be when they are… how she won’t have this when he is. She has to admit to herself that it’s been nice having someone else care for her. Silently, selflessly, comforting and caring. She’d missed that part of working with family. SOAR were more like her children, they were all so young, she was sheltering them , it’s why she started it in the first place. But the BAU those were her people, she grew up with them in a sense, the bond created there something unto itself, something untouchable, irreplaceable. They all looked out for each other, would do anything to protect each other... had done anything to protect each other... including Luke.
Lifting the cup to her lips, the spicy chai scented steam tickles her nose and she inhales deeper letting the cardamom and ginger mix with the briny astringent smell of his aftershave before taking a sip, pooling the hot liquid in a bowl on her tongue, swallowing, then sighing, and sinking into the ocean of him, “I love you.”
The stroke of Luke’s fingers stop.
Penelope’s eyes pop open at the admission.
SHIT.
Shit.
“This. I love this. The tea. Thank you. It is just. WhAT I needed.” She quickly stilts, sitting up and pulling away from his embrace, his fingers falling to release her like so many falling petals.
Fuck.
She won’t look at him, eyes cast to the floor, her tea, the screens. How could she- did she just really?
She loved him, she knew, had known since the dinner, or thought she could anyway. But she also knew he didn’t feel that way about her! It’s why she called it mid-meal! All that dining and wine-ing leading to other surely wonderful treacherous activities, only for her to get more attached and then him to gently, ease away? No, it was better to break it off right then, that way she wouldn’t get attached. The time apart from the team had been majorly helpful in easing those feelings, or so she thought. And this, she thought she had a handle on it, that things had gone back to being platonic. Or as platonic as they had ever been. These were just little visits between teammates, Luke noticing her daily work-from-home tea ritual helped center and relax her, helped her be more productive…
 But she just said it.
TO HIM
And damn how true it was when she said it.How right it felt rolling off her tongue and curving past her lips, how good it felt to say it out loud escaping with the steam from her cup.
Except now. Now it did not feel so good. Now it was out there floating around oppressively. And this, this stupid fucking outfit. Oh my god. He was going to think she’d done it on purpose, a grandiose planned declaration with cupids and hearts and everything!
Penelope walked to her desk, placing Nancy down, worrying her lip, still refusing to look at him. She wasn’t dumb, she felt his reaction, his shock, the physical stall of his body on hers. And Fluff, she could only guess what his mind was doing in response. He must feel like fleeing. She’d made a mess of things, so uncomfortable…Now he’d feel the need to let her down easy, to tell her he loved her too, just not in that way, that he cared for her, but maybe they should cool it with the tea-times for a bit.
But she’d covered, maybe he’d hang on to that, let it dissolve between them, waft into the vents or get swept up in a dustpan like so much other dirt.
She loved him? She loved him? She loved him. Could she really? The words had felt loving when he heard them, but her teasing and looks had felt that way too until they didn’t, until it came time for them to be honest.
His fingers faltered, mind sputtering blank. He loved her, had loved her, for so long from so many different distances, so many different places. He loved her so deeply he was willing to be what she needed when she needed it, putting his desire for reciprocation aside to be with her in any capacity she’d allow, knowing he was doing it all despite her not loving him, even when it hurt that she wouldn’t see how he feels and wont feel the same. But this, was she finally maybe, opening up to the possibility? Did she love him? Actually? Romantically? Not in the way she says it to JJ and Morgan and Prentiss and hell…everyone but him.
Risking. It was a great risk to do what he felt was the only option for clarification, but one everything about this told him wasn’t so risky at all. He was glad to be a profiler at this exact moment and that he’d had all that practice reading Penelope Garcia specifically for so long.
Luke stood, taking the two strides it took to get to her with more eagerness than may have been appropriate.
And, oh look, right on cue here he is to deliver that crushing blow. “Ohh, the time!” Penelope said looking at her bare wrist, “You know I have to go- JJ- Emily-“ She faltered, still unwilling meet his gaze, turning to walk past him, make her way back to her abandoned laptop. Save herself, save face…cry out in her embarrassment the bathroom.
Luke stopped her, hands clasping firmly around her elbows, large heavy stance keeping them both in place. Her face was cast down and god how he hated it, hated not seeing the candy of her eyes shining back at his.
She was quiet, not saying a word, they both were for a minute. Then, gathering the rest of his courage, Luke requested soft and deep, slowly so that she’d hear every intention in his words, “Penelope Grace Garcia, I need you to look at me.” As he did, he move a hand from elbow to chin, “Right now, Chica.” and god, if he’d imagined the shiver of her body at his touch...
Tentatively her eyes met his, looking guilty, sad, his soberly hopeful, needing to know, “Do you mean it? How long?”
Penelope jerked her head to the side, face falling and hands pushing away,  “Alvez, let me go-“
But he wouldn’t, couldn’t, not when there was this crack in the wall, not now when she’d let this shimmer of truth slip. Breaking in a rush, he cut her off “-It’s been years. For me. Penelope Garcia, I’ve spent a lifetime loving you. Longer than lock-down, longer than I should have. If it were possible, I’d say longer than I’ve known you. But it’s not, it just feels like an eternity because I love you, and I have loved you and I think you love me too. God, I hope-” But he finds the rest of his thought turning to muffled noise as soft lips press to his and fingers curl against him, nails grazing his biceps as she pulls herself closer.
His arms fold around her back and low on her waist, body rocking at the propulsion of her movement. She’s sweet and spicy, vanilla and chai, soft and silky and plush and warm and he’s walking her back and she’s following his lead and he should stop he should they’re at work, anyone could walk in at any time, this wasn’t entirely allowed, they work on a team together, Emily would kill them, which is honestly the least bad thing that could happen if they were found at this moment, but he can’t now that they’re here, he doesn’t want to now that they’re here. His heart is pounding and the blood is rushing through his ears, she hasn’t broken their kiss yet and his hand is drifting lower, gripping and pulling her closer but it only reminds him how short todays dress really is when fingertips brush along the meeting of ass and thigh and Penelope lets out a squeak of surprise that morphs into an “oof!” as they get resistance hitting the wall.
Her hands let go moving to spread on his chest, when she opens her eyes he’s looking down at her, wrecked, acquisitive, wild, and short of breath. Luke takes a step back, recovering space between them, pulling the hem of her skirt down in the process. Penelope slumps back against the wall, knees suddenly uncooperative. “So you love me huh?”
Sucking in his lower lip, he eyes her playfully, and all Penelope can think is how nice that lip felt on hers, how she wants it back on hers, latching down her throat, wandering over her chest, down, down, down…her vision shifts.
“I dunno, you still think you can’t talk to me without taking shots?”
Her eyes snap back to his, the pang of regret hitting when she sees the wound behind the joke.
“It was never like that…even when I tried to pretend it was. I’m sorry.”
Luke only nods, “I do love you. I’m not sorry.”
He was teasing, mostly, he was willing to let it go, had let what should have been much worse go, because as Pope said, hope springs eternal…and after that night, after the wake, she seemed to look at him differently, things had been different.
Penelope’s hands dropped, her gaze going with them, finding it easier to communicate at this turning point when she wasn’t looking directly at the target of her hurt, focusing on her cuticles instead, “So where do we go from here?”
Scooping up the abandoned mug of tea and taking a hand in his, Luke pulled her back to the settee, “I think tonight, I take you home. We’ll order takeout from La Cubana, and we’ll have a do-over. But right now, I think we have tea and relax, and then in a few minutes we get back to finding killers, like normal.”
Sitting with his arm once again around her, Penelope looks up at Luke, unimpressed, a little horrified, “Our normal’s kinda gross.”
A twitch of amusement crosses his face, cheek dimpling with the smirk that forms, “Yeah, but it’s better when there’s hope.”

Italian radio host Max Brigante: I speak bad English and bad Spanish. In which language do you prefer to do this interview?
Gael García Bernal: In Portuguese…
[spoiler: they settle on a mixture of Italian and Spanish in the end]
My best (aka very shaky) attempt at a translation after the jump...
Max: [in Italian] Welcome!
Gael: [in Italian] Thank you; I’m happy to be here.
Max: [in Italian] Very good. [in English] I speak bad English and bad Spanish.
Gael: OK
Max: [in English] In which language do you prefer to do this interview?
Gael: [in English] Portuguese…
Max: [in English] Portuguese? [BOTH LAUGH]
Gael: [in Italian] We speak in Portuguese, no? Yes?
Max: [in Italian] No, then I like the sound of Spanish. [in Spanish] I like the sound of Spanish.
Gael: [in Spanish] That's great.
Max: [in Spanish] So, we’re doing this in Spanish?
Gael: In italiñol!
Max: [LAUGHING] italiñol, si… [in Italian] I said that basically I speak bad English, bad Spanish, I asked how he preferred to do the interview and, in the end, we'll do it in Spanish, but actually I was already chatting with him. Basically, the film that brings this great actor here is Another End, among other things he was supposed to come with Piero Messina, but Piero was not well and he is the director. And I was just saying, you know, that it's the most natural thing but I think also important [? Not sure if I caught that bit correctly ?]. And I was asking if you're happy with the movie you made? Do you enjoy the film, are you happy with it?"
Gael: [in Spanish] Yes, I'm happy with the film because, well, the film turned out great, but also the experience of making it was really beautiful. We had a fantastic team and it delved into a deep philosophical topic, which is death. But it also brings up this fascinating debate about how much our bodies really matter to us in death, you know? We usually think of the body as something totally disposable, but the movie throws in this interesting twist and goes like, no, it's not that simple for me.
Max: [in Italian] So Gael says yes, he really liked the film. He's very happy, very happy to have worked with a very close-knit team. And then he says the theme, the theme of the film is a philosophical theme. Usually, we tend to think about death in a certain way. Memories, and the person, the body. Does it just disappear? What do we think death is? But here there's another theme and another question, very philosophical, very interesting. The main theme is definitely death, but also love.
Gael: [in Italian] Yes, exactly. Very good translation, fantastic. [in Spanish] Yes, of course, that's where the real melodrama is, right? You need death and you need love; it's not something romantic and separate from death, also, for that romantic story to exist. The movie is about memory, about various things, but it really is a story of how love can also transcend the very concept of death, something that is missed.
Max: [in Italian] He mentioned the main theme of death. I said yes, but I got the impression that love is also a big part of it, and he said absolutely, they're both themes, and how love might even overcome death because, to put it simply, the film is about a love that's separated by death. But through this technological system – let's call it that – named ‘Another End’, there's a way to get closer again to the soul of the person who's gone, but through another body. So, the theme's pretty complex, but really interesting, because it raises a whole bunch of questions. I know actors have their own ways of preparing and getting into character, so I'm curious how it was for you to interpret these characters in this particular story?
Gael: [in Spanish] Playing this character, this particular story, my answer might sound a bit redundant, because I usually get involved through the body, which is unusual. And it's definitely my instrument, right? But I think I have to embody it in that sense. Literally, I need to incorporate the character before I can start moving and discovering many more things along the way. And also to trust in the complexity of the story, of being alive, you know, because there are other actors who approach characters in a more psychoanalytical way, maybe a bit more rationally? But for me, the truth is that it all starts with something in the body. That's where I anchor myself and hold on, sometimes it doesn't go well, but that's it.
Max: [in Italian] OK, so he said that it might sound weird, when I asked him how he worked to get into the character, since we talked earlier about adding another layer of value to bodies. Gael said “Look, it'll sound strange. I really start with the body, the physicality of the character.” And that's how he works differently. So, he starts from there. He always needs to literally get into the skin, into the body of the character, and then from there, he develops everything that the character has to do within the plot. But what's the main emotion of the film? I was thinking about this love story that’s cut off because death intervenes. But the souls remain close... And I asked, so is the main feeling a feeling of pain? Is it a nostalgic feeling? And you told me no, it's romantic, it's a beautiful thing.
Gael: [in Spanish] Yes. Anything that's considered romantic today is usually… it's gentler. It's more… it doesn't carry that significant theme of life and death, right? But historically, that wasn't the case. Romantic stuff always had an element of death as well.
Max: [in Spanish] A little tragic…
Gael: [in Spanish] Yes, tragic. Yes, completely, yes.
Max: [in Italian] Gael said, is the movie romantic in the sense of that old-school romance? No, because nowadays, we're also used to thinking, if someone says ‘a romantic movie’ that it’s kind of syrupy, it's a bit light. But that romance of the past, that old-time romance, even in literature, always encompassed both love and death as two very close elements, right? The love that brushes against death, that's what the movie revolves around. And we’re talking about feelings. I wanted to ask you, then, what do you like the most about this film that you've made, that's out today. What is it that you really enjoy about this film?
Gael: [in Spanish] I think, from the beginning, it always was, when I was doing it, it felt like we were creating something interesting, something mysterious. Then, the alchemy of putting the right pieces together makes something work. Or not, some things just can't be fixed, right. So, in that dream, in that hope, I loved working with fantastic actors and actresses, in this case, Bérénice Bejo, who is an Argentine-French actress, and Renate Reinsve, a Norwegian actress, both fantastic, incredible. And honestly, we had a really beautiful rapport, we had a great time, enjoyed ourselves a lot, and amidst all the tragedy, there was a lot of light too. We laughed a lot behind the scenes. I mean, there was a lot of comedy in what we were doing, too.
Max: [in Italian] I asked him, what did you enjoy the most about the film? He said, well, obviously the theme, the story and then the hope that the editing would bring everything together in the best way. The theme isn't exactly simple, but then working with fantastic actors and having this team spirit was great. And even though the film touched on some tragic topics, there was actually a lot of comedy behind the cameras, they laughed, they had fun. The team spirit was really strong. I wanted to take advantage of Gael's presence to ask a question I always ask actors who also have experience as directors. I like to ask this question and want to know what's the main difference, right, between being in front of or behind the camera. There are many differences, but I'd like to know in your opinion what the main difference is?
Gael: [in Spanish] To begin with, I'll say this, it's not just one thing, there are several things. One immediate thing is, as a director – you know, moving from acting to directing – the first thing you feel is this tremendous loneliness and isolation.
Max: [in Italian] Loneliness? When you go from an actor to a director, the first thing you feel, it's a great loneliness.
Gael: [in Spanish] Yes, because if the film doesn't work out, if it stops being made, if something happens, it's really only the person directing who feels terrible, the only one who's going to have insomnia for two months, who's going to therapy and everything. Because for actors, sure, they care, but it passes quickly, right? That's a major one, but I'll say that what you also discover as a director is that films are like a Frankenstein, that's why it's called 'editing' [NOTE: this reference doesn’t translate easily into English; in Spanish montaje, the word Gael uses here, has a dual meaning – it refers to 'editing' in the context of film but 'assembly' in a manufacturing/engineering context], because it was engineers who made the first films. Because there's some kind of magic in editing, in juxtaposing one image with another, with another, with music, and with this and that, and gradually it turns into something that slips out of your hands as an actor. Directing for the first time, I said “Ah, no, I have no idea, I mean, I really don't control anything, right?”
Max: [in Italian] Well, first off, I'll remember 'loneliness' as an answer. He says it’s because the director needs therapy, can't sleep for two months, but it's just him, because the others, sure, they care, but then? Well, they sleep, but the director doesn't. And then he says, as a director, he discovered that a film is really a Frankenstein, meaning you have to assemble it, that's why we talk about 'editing' [NOTE: the reference works in Italian as well] and why engineers were the first to edit films. It's really a whole world: you have to put all the little pieces together, the music, everything. It's obviously a completely different kind of work. I'm really glad to have had this chat with you, Gael, thank you for being here.
Gael: [in Italian] Thank you.
Max: [in Italian] Let's remind everyone that 'Another End', the film you're starring in, directed by Piero Messina, who couldn't be here tonight, is out in theaters, so we invite you to go see it. Thanks, goodbye, and good luck with everything. Ciao!

Un tempo sarebbe stato facile amarmi.
Ero dolce.
Credevo nelle promesse, nelle parole.
Abbracciavo senza chiedere nulla in cambio.
Ero indifesa.
Io dell’amore non so molto, forse.
Non posso insegnarlo.
Ma so che ha a che fare con il rispetto.
E con le scelte che non s’impongono, ma si costruiscono. Insieme.

A GarVez Ficlet: I Just Came For What you Owe Me
Author: Parisian Nicole
Rating: K
Summary: Just another idea that popped into my head just a little a 'the morning after' scenario 😊
*****
She had been pacing the floor in her office since she had walked through the door. When a gentle knock came from the other side of the closed door, Penelope Garcia rushed to the door, swung it open, and then pulled a suddenly stunned JJ inside, and closed the door behind her.
“Come in, come in,” Garcia huffed out as JJ stared at her friend with concern in her eyes.
“I’m coming, I’m coming,” JJ replied as she allowed herself to be ushered inside the office. “I got here as soon as I could, what’s wrong, your call sounded urgent, and mysterious since you couldn’t tell me on the phone,” she added on as she moved to lean her backside to the desk that adjoined the desk Garcia worked from.
“Saturday, Luke took me out to lunch,” Garcia began, and JJ arched her brows and smiled at hearing this.
“So, you two finally got around to your 2nd date?”
“What? No, it wasn’t like a date, date,” Garcia corrected as she frowned a little. “He was just fulfilling a promise we made for him bringing me back in to work this Sicarius case.
“Uh-huh,” JJ said with a knowing smile. “And how was your not a date, lunch date?”
“It went fine. Luke took me to my favorite diner, Nell’s,” Garcia said, and JJ nodded as she knew it was her favorite. She had actually gotten the rest of the team to make it a regular lunch spot as the food was really good. “We had great conversation and a really fun time, and then we went back to his place, because I wanted to see Roxy. I hadn’t seen her in a couple of weeks, because we’ve been so busy with this case. And I ended up staying for dinner…” Garcia further explained as she averted her eyes from JJ’s down to the floor. “But we didn’t get around to actually eating dinner,” She said as JJ’s mouth fell open slightly but before she could ask the question she was dying to know, Garcia already knowing what she was about to ask, cut her off. “And I also stayed for breakfast, but we didn’t get around to eating breakfast either. I left while he was still sleeping, and I have been avoiding his calls. I even took a day long trip to visit Derek, Savannah, and Hank just in case he stopped by my apartment,” she finished and then plopped down in her chair, propped her elbows on her knees, and buried her face in her hands.
“Okay, that explains the five very vague phone calls I got from him yesterday about you,” JJ stated. “So, you two finally had sex? Well, Rossi won that bet,” She chuckled out, and caused Garcia to snap her head up to regard her friend and ask her about said bet, but before she could the door suddenly opened and Luke’s voice filled the space.
“Good morning, Penelope,” He greeted with a smile on his face.
“Good morning, Agent Alvez,” Garcia replied as she adjusted her glasses and then turned in her seat to pull up some case file. “You know, it’s good manners to knock before entering someone’s domain.”
“Right, JJ, would you please give Penelope and me a moment in private?” He spoke directly to JJ, who smiled in return as she pushed up from the desk she was leaning against. She looked at Garcia who was staring back at her with huge, frightened eyes that begged her to stay. But JJ knew there was no reason for her to be involved because she knew without a shadow of a doubt that Luke would not do anything or say anything that would harm Garcia. With that in mind she stepped around Luke and to the exit.
“Sure, I’ll see you two later,” JJ said as she walked out and closed the door behind her. Penelope quickly locked her eyes back to her monitors and began to speed type, though she wasn’t really focusing on any of the work. Luke now took up the position of where JJ had been, and he now leaned with his backside against the adjoining desk and his arm across his chest as he silently watched her face. This went on for a good five minutes until Penelope couldn’t take it any longer.
“What!?!” She exclaimed aspirated as she tossed her arms up a little in defeat and turned in her seat to look up at him.
“Nothing, I just came for what I think you owe me,” Luke said as he spoke in a very calm voice.
“Look, I’m sorry, okay?” She said through a shaky sigh, and she bit at her bottom lip to stop the trembling. “I know I initiated our tryst by throwing my self at you and kissing you. But you don’t have to worry I don’t expect anything from it.”
“Yeah, you did initiate the first round, but rounds two, three, and four were all me,” Luke stated with a smirk as he leered at her, and she leaned back in her chair a little as she looked at him. She would admit that she was certainly no profiler and not good at reading people the way they did, but she was sure that he was not upset or disappointed about the intimate time they had spent together. Also, that he was blatantly flirting with her. “And I do expect something from it.”
“Wait … you do? What?” She asked curiously truly baffled by his words and carefree demeanor. At this moment she got an alert on her screen about a new case. “Looks like there’s been another killing by one of Sicarius’s minions,” She said and despite the grim reason she was happy for the reprieve as she hurriedly stood from her chair, grasped her Octopus coffee mug, and took a step toward the door. But then she felt a gentle hand grab her right forearm and turn her. When she looked up at him, he swiftly leaned down and capture her lips with his own. The kiss tasted of the strong desire they held for each other. When he finally released her from the kiss, she was left breathless and a little lightheaded.
“That,” Luke said as he graced her with the sweetest of smiles. “I expected a good morning kiss from you yesterday, but I awoke to an empty bed. Why did you just leave like that?”
“Because I didn’t want to assume that you wanted me to be there when you woke up, and I didn’t want things to be awkward,” She confessed as she ducked her head a bit and dropped her eyes to the carpeted floor. He reached out and grasped her chin with his right hand and tilted her head back until she was once again looking right at him.
“I wanted you to be there when I woke up, Penelope, because waking up alone … for a minute there I doubted that my dreams about making love to you had actually come true,” Luke confessed, and her eyes widened slightly to this news. “And it kind of stung that you left without saying anything, or leaving me a note, and then you proceeded to ghost me for the rest of the day.
“I am so sorry, Luke,” Penelope apologized sincerely.
“It’s all right, Derek called me and told me you were there. He wanted to know why you seemed so upset. He says you wouldn’t come out and just tell him, but he suspected it had something to do with me. You know I think he and I might come to blows someday over some misunderstanding about you,” He offered this with a teasing smile even though inside it was what he honestly thought.
“No, there will not be any coming to blows between my best friend and my boy…” She abruptly stopped the word before it escaped, and the smile fell from her face even as he cast her a kind smile in return.
“Your boyfriend, you can say it, because that’s exactly what I am,” He declared. “And you’re my girlfriend. I thought the time we spent in my bed would leave no doubt about that for you. But Mi Madre once told me that words sometimes speak louder than our actions. And for women, certain words really matter and need to be said. So, if you need to hear the words, Penelope, I will say them … hell, I will shout them proudly. I love you. I am head over hills in love with you,” He proclaimed as he leaned down, brushed a chaste kiss on her lips, and then pulled back again. “And It’s all right if you don’t feel the same way about me yet…”
“I do … I’m in love with you too, Luke,” She quickly interjected, and they both smiled in relief. “And I have been for awhile now, probably since you helped me plan Rossi’s engagement party, and did it even after I treated you like crap,” She admitted with a snarky smile on her face, and he chuckled and nodded. He then casually tossed his left arm over her shoulders and started to walk them to the door.
“Well, I fell in love with you way before then,” He chimed in with a huge smile on his face, and she tilted her head a little to gaze up at him just as he opened the door and moved them across the threshold.
“Oh, do tell, exactly when did you know?” She questioned.
“When Phil asked me for the sixth or seventh time about asking you out,” Luke finally revealed to her, and her eyes enlarged as her mouth fell open in shock. “The first few times he asked me, I just laughed it off and told him and myself that you were just too much for him to handle. Then by the sixth time, he asked I really wanted to punch him in his face and scream at him ‘no, you can’t have her’.”
“Wow, you really cockblocked us like that, Luke Alvez?” She teased him not even a little bit mad that he had. He tossed his head back some as he laughed.
“Sorry, I guess I should warn you that I am territorial and can be quite possessive at times,” He said as he pulled her door closed behind them.
“I think I can live with that,” Penelope said as she smiled up at him. This time she tugged him down into a sweet kiss, and when they pulled a part a couple of agents who were also walking down the corridor towards them tossed out smiles, nods, and then they could be heard whispering about them as they passed.
“Think we’ll get in trouble for fraternizing like this at work?” Luke asked even as he kept his arms wrapped around her shoulders, and he felt her shrug.
“The FBI rules don’t apply to me, technically I don’t work here anymore,” And they both chuckled as they made their way to the BAU conference room.
