A friendly reminder that when it comes to food, less is not always best! Unless youโ€™re trying to lose mass then yes, you do not need to be in a calorie deficit (burning more than you eat โ€ข Thereโ€™s a misconception when it comes to being healthy that you need to eat less โ€ข Iโ€™m eating more than ever right now but still sticking to my maintenance calories. How? I swapped my mid afternoon protein bar for a couple of boiled eggs and babybels, I swapped pre-packed sandwiches for homemade lunch boxes filled with chicken, feta and bulgar wheat and I swapped eating out 2-3 times a week to maybe just once. The result? I feel more energetic, I feel fuller for longer and Iโ€™m able to nail those evening workouts more than ever! It's been a while since I got through two novels each week (reading is what a commute is good for). In the recent months, I was happy to get through a few pages a month, but that's what dealing with a small baby is like. I always imagined maternity leave to be a sleeping baby and me reading in a cute cafe. Reality is more along the lines of a not sleeping baby and a mom trying to grab a bite to eat or maybe finish one of the ten made but not drunk cups of coffee ๐Ÿ˜Š And then the baby awakes. At the moment, Lizzie is very keen to mimic us and wants to play with us, so those awake hours get fairly exhausting, but she's also settled into a bit of a routine where she has at least one long (1hr+) nap a day, maybe even two, although the second one tends to be shorter. Those are the times when we get to enjoy a cup and a bit of me time. This is me on holiday in 2018. In the run-up to this holiday, I tried ๐—˜๐—ฉ๐—˜๐—ฅ๐—ฌ๐—ง๐—›๐—œ๐—ก๐—š to lose weight before we jetted off. โœ… A 1200 Calorie Diet โœ… 'Skinny' Teas โœ… Low Carb โœ… Meal Replacement Shakes I just wanted the weight gone. As quickly as possible. I put my weight gain down to the fact that I was working away and slightly out of routine. What I didn't realise back then was that by always using a quick fix to get myself "beach body ready", I had got myself into a vicious cycle of yo-yo dieting. AKA the root cause of my weight gain. You see - I would crash diet for 3 or 4-weeks before going away and then revert to eating normally as soon as I stepped foot in the airport. In order to lose weight and keep it off, I needed to break the cycle. So I started to make small, sustainable changes to my lifestyle. I moved my body more in ways that felt good. I nourished my body from the inside out. I added more structure to my lifestyle. I invested in a coach to push me. This year when I go away I won't feel the need to 'shred' for the sunbed. Because I feel strong and confident all year round. And I'm guessing some of you out there will be able to relate to this story. Maybe you've dieted a few times in the past, finding that you're OK for a while but then completely lose your way and (after a period of total rebellion) you start over. Again. And again. I hear you, I've been there! Progress isn't a destination, it's a journey. And there's no quick fix. This maybe an unpopular opinion โ€ฆ โ€ฆ but you can have goals to look or live a certain way and not be doing it from a place of hate for your body. Going to the gym isnโ€™t bowing to a societal pressure to look a certain way. Tracking your meals so that you make sure you fuel your body correctly is not disordered eating. Not a single person I work with has said theyโ€™re โ€œdrivenโ€ by the emotional dislike for their body. Theyโ€™re driven by wanting to improve their physical health. Theyโ€™re driven by wanting to feel more comfortable in their clothes. Theyโ€™re driven by wanting to feel more confident in their performance in other areas of their lives. The body positive movement started out as just that, a positive movement โ€ข And whilst there are still many out there that use it to push for constructive change in the society for representation, there are more that use it to shame those that want / need to enforce some change in their lives. I agree that there needs to be representation. I agree that no one needs to change who they are to fit a mould. But I believe that everyone has a choice and if they want to make some some changes to their lifestyle, whatever their reason, they should. ๐‘ป๐’‚๐’Œ๐’† ๐’˜๐’‰๐’‚๐’• ๐’š๐’๐’– ๐’๐’†๐’†๐’… ... ๐ŸŽŸ So far this week I have seen posts encouraging you to sunbathe daily so that you are unrecognisable in 30-days time, tips on how to suppress your appetite and of course the obligatory 'eat 1200 calories daily' if you want to lose weight posts. โ˜€๏ธ if like me you're in the northern hemisphere, you could sunbathe daily and look no different in 30-days time โ€ข And let's not even get started on the medical implications of UV exposure! ๐Ÿฅ— If your body is asking for food in between meals, ask yourself why? Chances are you're not eating the right things to keep you full ๐—ผ๐—ฟ you're not eating enough โ€ข Make sure you're eating a good balance of protein (at least 0.75 grams of protein per day per kg of body weight), fats and carbs and including protein-rich snacks such as yoghurts as well! ๐Ÿฅ˜ In the early naughties, the Institute of Medicine released some dietary guidelines for calorific intake and for a sedentary female aged between 26 & 50, their recommendation was 1800 calories per day (2000 for those aged 19 - 25) โ€ข Now this is still very generic, but it's a far cry from the 1200 calories that get advertised online โ€ข In fact 1200 calories is the recommended daily intake for sedentary females aged between 4 and 7 years old ... so if you're eating just 1200 calories a day are you eating enough? To put it simply, no โ€ข If you're trying to lose weight, a deficit of around 10% + an increase in your activity levels should be enough to start seeing visible changes over a period of time. Following on from my reel the other day - here are a few more tips on surviving the festive season; ๐Ÿ’งStay Hydrated โ€ฆ whilst Buckโ€™s Fizz for breakfast, Mulled Wine before lunch and a bottle of Baileys in front of the TV might sound like a good idea, it will actually leave you rather dehydrated โ€ข Instead try alternating your drinks and aiming to hit your regular water intake to help your body stay on top form! ๐Ÿฆƒ Realistically you are not going to gain any weight from one (or even two) overeating at Christmas โ€ข In fact, you would need to consume an extra 3500 calories to gain 1lb of fat! However, that doesn't mean you should keep eating until you feel uncomfortable. Try to balance your plate using the rule of thirds if you're not cooking - aiming for โ…“ veggies, โ…“ starchy carbs and โ…“ proteins / dairy / unsaturated fats! ๐Ÿ›Œ A girls best friend his her beauty sleep! Prior to that, I would force myself to go to the gym after a big meal out to 'burn it off' by doing back-to-back classes and make sure I'd done just enough to level the playing field. I hated going to the gym back then, it wasn't enjoyable and often I'd leave feeling ill. It led to years of yoyo dieting, trying to earn my food and being in a bad place with both my diet and exercise. These days I work out because I want to. In fact, I was saying just this week that I no longer see running as exercise, it's more like a hobby now. Over the next few weeks, you will no doubt hear one-liners such as 'nothing tastes as good as skinny feels', 'are you beach body ready' and 'be slim for life' as companies try to sell you their products, plans and potions. But the goal isn't to be skinny, it's to be happy, healthy and strong. The goals isn't to be beach body ready, it's to be ready for anything. The eagle eyed of you out there may have spied little snippets of my new branding appearing over the last week โ€ข Yes, after 7-years of hiding behind the pseudonym that was HarmonyBlaze, I have decided to step out from the shadows and branch out under my own name. Eek. And so you will no longer be seeing 'HarmonyBlaze' pop up in your feed and instead you will be seeing a lot more from 'EmmaHarrison.Fit'. Yes, Iโ€™m such a big believer in what I do Iโ€™ve put my name to it. What do I do? I help people like you (yes you reading this right now) to carve out a lifestyle that they love. I have clients that work out 2 / 3 / 4 times a week, that are redefining the relationships that they have with themselves and with exercise and that are excited to become the happiest, healthiest, ๐—ฆ๐—ง๐—ฅ๐—ข๐—ก๐—š๐—˜๐—ฆ๐—ง versions of themselves without restricting their diets or lifestyles. Why? Because I've been there! I know how unhappy living a life filled with hunger pangs and cravings made me.
