I was calmly scrolling through the web when I saw this article and oh boy it almost noon and I'm so ✨️angry✨️
Tumblr media
So I clicked and the summary is as follows:
Tumblr media
CAN CAPITALISM JUST FUCKING DROP DEAD ALREADY???? The consumism is off the charts and I'm—I'm astounded.
Can people understand that good quality content media takes time to be crafted???? That animators, musicians, actors, writers—in all, artists—don't HAVE to be pushed to work overtime just for you to fucking sit on your couch and watch a series/movie that you're going to forget next week?
That's insane!
Do you think that movies that had changed the industry like Spiderman Across the Spiderverse were made in months? In a year? Maybe those people who are whining about why their favorite show is taking so long to be released need to stop for a moment and ponder about how much manual labor does it take to do anything, from the fast-fashion clothes they buy at the mall, to the simple cutlery they use in the kitchen, and that OF COURSE ART HAS TO TAKE IT'S TIME TOO, ESPECIALLY IF YOU WANT IT TO BE GOOD!!!!
Y'all can just feed and AI with a prompt and make a good movie/series/book/music from it—no matter how much capitalism is brainwashing us to believe it can.

Something I've been thinking about is how Patrick O'Brian manages so skillfully to write characters whose actions contradict their beliefs, which I think is honestly a big part of why his characters feel so real. Mostly with Stephen and Jack—e.g., and perhaps most notably, Stephen has notably leftist sympathies (honestly I have no idea how to characterize his politics in period terms) who nonetheless becomes very comfortable with his rise to the landed gentry, while Jack is a card-carrying Tory who much of the time sympathizes far more with working class sailors and farmers than with the upper classes—but I'm sure he does it to a lesser degree with some of his minor characters (James Dillon, while perhaps not precisely minor, comes to mind), and I love that he's able to do that, especially the way in which he embeds it in the narrative. We see how they're all unreliable narrators of themselves; we understand how they want to be seen and how that does and doesn't coincide with the reality, but most importantly, this isn't presented as something reprehensible, just as a part of their own humanity. They are not their expectations for themselves, but they don't need to be those expectations to be beloved.

MAKING MY OLD GIFSET IDEAS — 10/25
“For you, I would cross the line / I would waste my time / I would lose my mind / They say, ‘She's gone too far this time’”
“And baby, for you, I would fall from grace / Just to touch your face / If you walk away / I'd beg you on my knees to stay”

y'know, what i find really interesting (and I've talked to my friend about this) is the way Quint/Hooper and Hooper/Brody are shipped as like, seperate pairings, but i don't think i've ever seen a dedicated Quint/Brody thing??? the only times they're together is when it's a polygamous ship between the three of them, and i just,,, idk, i think that's silly. i think Brody and Quint deserve to hold hands. Quint is just so fuckin silly and Brody is a nice down to earth dude. They also get along really well? more well than i think people give them credit for. Quint teached him how to tie knots for fucks sake :(( they have so much potential to be domestic and i just wanted to bring attention to it

#random rambles#The last ask sent me on five different tangents I wasted the whole afternoon over#I opted against adding this to the ask because it'd be unrespectful to Anon but if I don't let it out somewhere I'll die#Everyone knows how beyond what it may look like that I don't like bsd and that includes Beast#But the ask touches the exact reason why I think Beast ultimately fails as a story#because it constantly tries to frame Akutagawa as evil and heartless; but what's framed as his most cruel action#- the one of mindlessly slaughtering his enemies at the start - is itself moved by love#And I know someone in the wings is already arguing#“that's the whole point. the reader is supposed to see through it‚ and see that Akutagawa wasn't inherently evil to begin with”#… But I don't think that's the case. This is not the place to talk about it but at the same time I don't want to make a post about it#but at the same time I feel like I won't have peace untill I've brought this up.#That's not the case because 1) Dazai says it's not the case‚ and Dazai is the character with most authority in the entire franchise#and 2) Ryuunosuke's later scene with Gin reinforces the fact that Akutagawa's action was cruel and inhuman#But it's not true. It's just that the author is a little nihilist that doesn't believe humans are inherently good.#So please let's just stop pretending they aren't? Because bsd fans. in my very humble opinion - are in severe need of someone#to remember them they are free to like aspects of the franchise even without acting like its morals aren't completely fucked up#Sorry for derailing it's been tormenting me since forever I desperately needed to mention it somewhere.#I've recently read someone say that bsd sustained that humans are inherently good and like... What the fuck. What the fuck. What the fuck.#Like there ARE series that do that? T/pn is one of them? Read t/pn if you want that? It's good?#But bsd definitely doesn't c'mon it's not that hard#Ugh. sorry for this. It was just to say#I love Beast but I don't like bsd and Beast is part of bsd and Beast does ultimately adhere to bsd's fucked up morals Kyotag out#I'm just saying we should all be able to recognize where our personal worldviwes end and where the author's start.#If you don't you aren't reading you're projecting#I'm not even rereading this#if I'll overthink it a second more I know it'll end up together with my millions black posts at the bottom of my drafts#Post

Have you seen the "Invictus" Jason Todd Death Day Animatic by shyuwe? It's amazing and I want someone good at saying thoughts on the internet to talk about it.
Sorry for the late reply anon and no I had not! But I watched it now and yeah it's cool, here's a link to the vid by @shyuwe.
I find it really difficult honestly to talk about art, because good art already says more than words could express about it, you know? Just watch the video and see for yourself! However I will say something about the choice of the poem "Invictus" by Willima Ernest Henley, from Life and Death for Jason, because omg yes! Continued under cut.
Here's the poem first:
Tumblr media
Invuctus means as much as unconquerable or undefeated. Frankly a title I can stand by for Jason. Seeing as one of my favorite aspects of Jason's character is his representation of victims and I stand by the fact that we are undefeated by what has happened to us. The word recognizes the gravity of what has happened and pays homage to your experience and finally we get to see ourselves not only as the sufferers of a poor fate, but also the victors, you're still standing. And I will be the last person to ever tell someone how that "standing" has to look like to be undefeated. Overcoming is not something you have to earn, you already overcame. You have nothing to prove to be undefeated.
The "unconquerable soul" is not exemplified in the body that is standing tall more than in the body that is slumping and panting, no matter how you stand or breath, you are still breathing. The other verses of the first stanza are rather straightforward in setting the stage. Our main character is in the black of the night, in the belly of the whale. They are where all is lost and seems hopeless, but that does not mean they are defeated.
Moving on to the second stanza. This part of the poem acknowledges a disillusioned worldview. It is hard to perceive the world as still containing beauty and hope after trauma. And yet you can be unafraid. And I do hope for everyone who has suffered to be able to return to a previous, more naive, less burdensome, perspective. But if you can't, then frankly that is alright, it does not have to diminish your spirit. I think Jason incorporates a lot of the concept of lost innocence, of not being able to return to how things were. But while Jason does grieve his own loss, he does not lose hope to that fact.
Finally, the last stanza, as a call to the strength of autonomy. Now Bruce might like to think he works alone, but Batman's strength lies in his allies. Jason however has perfected himself into the deus ex machina of himself. He has learnt that sometimes there is no powerful saviour who will swoop in for you. Jason is a one man army in combat skill, knowledge and in practice as well. We have seen team-ups, but they never seem to stick. Something about Jason screams lone wolf.
Because the truth is, after trauma, the only person you want to feel is strong enough to protect you is yourself. In a realistic sense, trauma does not make you dependent on other people, it can make you want to become the most whole and in control person you can be. This is why some children from abusive and neglectful homes have incredible emotional reflectivity and recognition skills. They will not be victims of the arbitrariness of emotions any longer and have mastered the flow of their own and others emotions just to feel a semblance of control. It's why victims might have incredible scheduling and self-discipline skill. Coming out of an unpredictable and volatile situation they have gained control of their surroundings. It's why vicitms might be high-achievers in academics, because they know what is expected and they can control their input and actually get the reward that was promised. Jason is to me an epitome of effective pragmaticism. He knows the value of reliability and certainty. Rather than going in hotheaded in an attempt to murder a man for trafficking children, he employs a failsafe by also poisoning his energy drink. Because Jason is the one in control. He orchestrates a distraction for Batman and spends three hours creeping up on the Batmobile to plant a bomb. His anger doesn't ignite him like an explosion, it fuels him, like the steady supply of purpose.
Jason is in command now, the captain of his soul. Because let us face it, so far Jason's life has been shaped only by other people. His parents' deaths, Bruce adopting him, Sheila betraying him, the Joker murdering him, Superboy Prime's punch returning him to life. Jason's life has been so far out of his autonomy and control, but he claims command of his soul and of his fate. No one has set him on his vengeance trip against Bruce and against the Joker. No one defines Jason anymore. Bruce does not actually have the power to grant whether or not Jason is a hero, It's Jason's jurisdiction now who he is and if he says he is a hero, the patron saint to victims, the avenging spirit of the innocent, then yes, he is.
This is not only about strength in the face of adversity, this is about the fact that you are the only authority you need, your autonomy is the only justification and permission you need to continue being strong. No one fucking else gets to decide for you anymore.

and while im at it. and i know some people will roll their eyes at me for this its fine. naruto getting the prosthetic while sasuke doesnt has symbolic meaning. think of it, they blasted each others arms off in perfect symmetry, and for a brief moment they finally found their balance. said arms had the symbols for their destined cycles of destroying each other, which they erased by exploding the arms, the symbols engraved on their hands, into smithereens. they were finally just each other, just sasuke and naruto, choosing each other for no other reason than wanting to.
then you have naruto replace said arm with an artificial state approved prosthetic while sasuke doesnt. by doing so naruto isnt in equilibrium with sasuke anymore. by doing so naruto choose konoha over sasuke, which we know he would never do. we have several canon examples for that. at this point its already boruto's naruto. the naruto we know, the one that was ready to die with sasuke, to imply that he was going to fight the whole world in grief if they killed sasuke, who said that saving sasuke came before anything, even a world war, would not accept a new arm unless sasuke did too.
TLDR yeah canon is canon but even that always has context that needs to be kept in mind. 'he would not fucking say/do that'
