Okay, y'all, it's rant time again. Buckle up.

A new report just came out from Public Citizen highlighting the dangers of using apps and AI foraging guides for identifying mushrooms, particularly when mushroom foraging. It's the latest in a string of warnings that are fighting against a tide of purported convenience ("just take a picture and get your answer instantly!")

I've ranted about this since last August, and I also wrote up a detailed post on how to identify an AI-generated foraging guide. I'm also including info on the limitations of apps and AI in The Everyday Naturalist: How to Identify Animals, Plants, and Fungi Wherever You Go. I'm not just saying this to toot my own horn--it's because nature identification, and teaching it to others, is literally what I do for a living. So this is a topic near and dear to my heart.

I teach a very, very specific sort of identification class; whether we're focusing on animals, plants, fungi, or all of the above, I walk people through a detailed process of how to observe a given organism, make note of its various physical traits and habitat, and use that information to try to determine what it is. I emphasize the need to use as many sources as possible--field guides, websites, online and in-person groups, journal articles, etc.--to make absolutely sure that your identification is solid.

And every year, I get people (thankfully, a very small minority of my students) who complain because my two-hour basic mushroom hunting class wasn't just five minutes of introduction and one hundred and fifteen minutes of me showing slide after slide of edible mushrooms. There are so many people out there who just want a quick, easy answer so they can frolic in the woods and blithely pick mushrooms like some idealized image of a cottagecore herbalist with a cabin full of dried plants and smiling frogs or something.

While I do incorporate a bit of information on getting started with the app iNaturalist in my classes, it is as only ONE of MANY tools I encourage people to use. Sure, it's more solid than most apps because, in addition to the algorithmic I.D. suggestions it initially gives you, other iNaturalist users can go onto your observations later and either agree with your I.D.s or suggest something different and even explain why.

And yet--even as great as iNat is, it and its users can still be wrong. So can every other I.D. app out there. And I think that is one thing that the hyper-romanticized approaches to foraging--and nature identification in general--miss. In order to be a good forager, you HAVE to also be good at nature identification.

And nature identification is an entire process that requires you to have solid observational and critical thinking skills, to be able to independently research using many different types of tools, and be willing to invest the time, patience, and focus to properly arrive at a solid identification--if not to species level, then as far down the taxonomic ladder as you can realistically manage. (There's a reason even the experts complain about Little Brown Mushrooms and Damned Yellow Composites!)

People mistake one single tool--apps--for the entire toolkit. They assume any book they find on Amazon is going to be as good as any other, and don't take the time to look up the author to determine any credentials or experience, or even whether they actually exist or not. It doesn't help that the creators of these products often advertise them as "the only [book/app/etc.] you need to easily identify [organism of choice]!"

I mean, sure, the world isn't going to end if you never question the birdsong results on the Merlin app, or if you go through life thinking a deer fern is just a baby western sword fern. But when we get into people actually eating things they find in the wild, there's often no room for error. There are plants and mushrooms that can kill you even if you only eat a tiny amount. And even if they don't kill you, they may make you wish you were dead for a few days while you suffer through a whole host of gastrointestinal nastiness and other symptoms.

There aren't any shortcuts if you want to be safe in your foraging. You HAVE to be willing to do the work. And any teacher, author, or product that says otherwise isn't being ethical. I'm glad to see more people speaking out against the "fast foodization" of foraging in regards to overreliance on apps and the existence of AI foraging books; I just hope it's enough to prevent more people from getting sick or dying.

i'm no expert but this is what i think!!

if they did individual costumes, i think ellie would either do something hyper specific that like maybe one person gets (film bro tendencies) OR she would be like… a traffic cone. something very silly that somehow still works for her. but me personally? i would dress her up as jim from treasure planet. if you get the vision i love you

i can see abby saying that she doesn't care but as soon as she picks a costume and gets excited about it, it becomes unacceptable for it to be anything except perfect. she has to get every detail right!! goes out of her way to get a realistic firefighter jacket and is so offended when you wanna take it off of her (she'll do it of course, she just needs a little coaxing! and perhaps a kiss or two)

as far as couple costumes, i think ellie would pick yours! she gets ideas all throughout the year and writes them down in her notes app. it's a yearly tradition for her to sit you down and go through all of them asking for your thoughts (and maybe softly guiding you to pick the one she happens to like the most) (they're all some guy and his cool hot girlfriend but that's what she loves). please please please be jesse and jane from breaking bad with her, she'll be so happy <3

abby, however, will literally be whatever you want. she completely lets you take the lead. doesn't care about the details because she doesn't mind looking silly if it makes you happy! how can she feel stupid when you're so excited about it? i think she would have fun literally just being your accessory, like if you're a cute mushroom fairy she'll be the moss. and if you wanna do mia from the princess diaries, she'll look hot in any of chris pine's outfits <3 abby would also slay as emmett from twilight if you wanted to be rosalie!! she's got the built for it and she basically already dresses like him

I'm back from my trip!

Here are a few highlights from my photos--I have a lot more, so if there is interest I'll post more.

Here's the beautiful cabin we stayed in:

According to the park brochure, the the lodge was built in the 1920's and burned down in the 1930's. Around that time, when the park was established and was in the process of recovery from logging in the 1800's, a number of permanent campsites were sold to various individuals and groups. This one was reabsorbed back into the public land when the lodge was destroyed, but some are still in private hands. (I have an exciting story about one that belonged to a Natural Science club.)

A giant mushroom:

US quarter for scale. According to my nature app, this is a Berkeley's Polypore. It rained a lot during our trip--we had exactly one day, Thursday, where it didn't rain at all--so there were a lot of fungi to see. This one was at a nature preserve near the park, run by the Carnegie museum of Pittsburgh (the nearest city to the park).

As another result of the rain, these little orange newts were very active:

Other wildlife sightings included a small snake (disappeared too quickly for identification), a very big millipede that I was very brave about, several deer--including a doe and two fawns--and a pair of raccoon kits. (Only the newts and one interesting moth stuck around long enough to be photographed.)

Things are so bad rn omg, I hate that I feel this way at all, ik it's bad and ik it's only my fault

I don't have to be there for them, I don't have to deal with all of their fucking issues but if I don't then I feel like anything bad that happens is my own fault. And bad things do happen when I'm not there to help them. Sometimes I feel like I can't actually let them be alone for a day becuz I'm sure by the end of the day they'll be about ready to kts, and that has happened before.

We didn't talk for maybe a day and they almost offed them self in that day and almost relapsed into multiple different things, it was horrible and it was my fault for not being there to comfort them for a single fucking day. I love them but I legit can't do this, I'm not going to be able to be there for them as much as they need. I've already done so much, skipped school and missed out on hanging with friends becuz they were struggling, or even just outta paranoia that something bad would happen. Hell I can't even take a bath without worrying any more becuz ofc some shit happened while I was having a bath and now I'm scared to leave them for that long without being able to check on them

I wake up I check on them, I get ready and I'm always checking thru their messages that I missed to see what they say and they almost always say something bad, I go to school and I think about them and then at break I check on them and then I do the same at lunch, once I get outta school I check on them and look at the messages I've missed. They consume every single one of my thoughts

And then they lied to me, they fucking hid things. I stood up for them and said that the whole time I've known them, they've only lied once, but turns out they had been lying the whole time I knew them, they had been hiding shit from me and then got angry with themselves when they couldn't recover while actively triggering themself and bitching bout calories, like idk maybe ur not getting better becuz ur on about trying to drop to 200 becuz u used to be able to and apparently 500 is too much for u now, so sorry the amount I eat daily is for fat ppl, and maybe ur not getting better becuz ur counting the cals of individual mushrooms. If u wanted to get better then why are u doing this, and why are u hiding it from me, why didn't u tell me, why did u say u were fine when u were thinking about killing urself and why did u say ur sh wasn't tht bad when it was, when it kept bleeding, when it was infected. And u still didn't go to a doctor for u infected cuts. And why did u say that about me? I can't look at myself anymore, I feel like my body triggers ppl but u triggered me and now I wanna starve more than ever, if u hide things and say horrible shit on secret accounts I can do the same, and I'm gonna fucking starve myself more than ever, I'm gonna go days without eating, will my body trigger u then? U won't fucking know becuz u don't have this app

They won't go to the doctor for their head injuries either, they should've months ago but always found a reason not to and now the wounds healed and they've probably got fucking brain damage, the doctors won't find shit and they'll just keep getting hurt and losing brain cells each time.

Its like they don't wanna get better with how little they listen to my advice, I'm trying to help meanwhile they're acting like what is clearly sh is fine and that they're fine.

Be fucking honest for once

If this relationship fails is becuz I lost trust after the months of lying. I've already thought about ending it multiple times becuz ik I shouldn't have to feel responsible for all this, and that they would be dead without me, but I feel bad leaving them and I still love them

It hurts me sm but I do love them a lot

And idk if I could ever leave, even if this doesn't stop, even if they keep doing this and making me panic and feel insane, even if ik they're not worth it and that I could so easily trigger them over just calling out their bullshit

I think I might start threatening to leave them, otherwise they won't listen and they won't get better

If I hurt them they'll let me becuz their standards are so low anyway

Ik I'm not perfect but I sure as hell wasn't a liar until this point, I was actually trying but now I don't feel like trying becuz I don't feel like they actually respect me, I feel like they like the fact I help them and that's it, ik they'd settle for less then me but that's becuz they've been so abused they don't know how else to be treated, I really don't need to go the extra mile to make them like me when they'd like me even if I hurt them

Ik I'm not perfect but they've pushed me too far and I can't keep doing this

I hope they somehow see this, I hope they learn how it feels, how I feel. Idk how they would find this but they better and I hope it hurts them and ik I'm shitty for wanting that and ik I'll regret this eventually, ik I will

Ik they'll cry and hurt them self and maybe attempt suicide but rn I can't care

This Christmas didn't go as planned. Not even a little bit.

My parents are still essentially homeless so I was unable to go home for Christmas. On one hand it meant less family drama, but it's hard to put into words just how much you will want to go home after your parents have had a brush with death and when they're clearing everything they own out of your childhood home and putting it on the kerb for waste collection.

I basically begged to go back and help, but they said no. My sister's roof also ended up collapsing in one part of the house (the living area) so I couldn't stay with her either. My brother had his in-laws with him as their place was also inundated with flood water. I had nowhere to go.

S the ex contacted me though. He said he'd be here. That I wouldn't be alone. But then of course he disappeared. He just never showed up. No explanation. No text. No nothing. Even now I haven't heard a word from him. He is actively ignoring me. He just didn't turn up for Christmas and is now pretending I don't exist.

So there were tears yesterday on Christmas morning and again today. The isolation has been overwhelming. On a brighter note though I made a garlic and thyme beef tenderloin with roast potatoes and a homemade mushroom sauce, a giant Christmas salad, and mini pavlovas. It was hours and hours of prep time. There was no shortage of delicious food in the apartment. There was just a shortage of people to eat it and an overwhelming sadness that I didn't have anyone to serve it to other than myself.

I had a chat with a close friend last night about the monstrosity that has been my love life over the last four years (let's do a recap: two bosses both already in relationships, an ex who flits in and out as he wants, and a guy I genuinely fell for who actually just wanted to screw me at work. Monstrosity is an accurate word). Despite how much I hate it and despite how hard it will be to venture back out there at this, the heaviest body weight of my life, I went back on the apps this morning. There was a resounding cheer from the three friends I told... I think they just want all the drama of the last four years left in the past. I understand their frustration but I'm sure it doesn't compare to my own at living it...

It was the loneliest Christmas I've ever had. Once again I set out determined to have a good Christmas and Christmas had its way with me. But I don't want to be in this place again next year. I want to be able to share it with someone who cares about me. So I guess I have to do this, so that even if I don't meet anyone in the next twelve months at least when Christmas arrives I can say I tried.

This is very much my idea of hell, so please, wish me luck...

PS. Oh, and as a sweet little Christmas present I also got Covid. This is despite not seeing another human for a whole week. Christmas won this round.

What Your Favorite MLP Character Says About You

As a disclaimer, everything I say is to be taken as a joke. If you get offended or upset, I’m sorry.

If Twilight is your favorite character, you are the very basic “I’m not like other girls” person. You like dark academia, tumblr, and probably hang fairy lights around your room. You like to believe that you’re the main character and you also often brag about your artistic talent, but then get annoyed when other people do it. You are also probably “the mom friend” in your friendship group and always try to resolve problems your friends have. You will carry a book with you everywhere and proceed to complain about cell phones, while at the same time spending all night on Tumblr posting art you make.

If Pinkie Pie is your favorite character, you probably have some sort of ADHD. You are one of the few people who still reads stories on Wattpad past middle school, but you really only read the crack fics. You still watch Vines on Youtube like Vine is still popular and you like trolling people on the internet. You have a separate meme account on every social media platform you use and all your friends will often use the phrase “you need to chill” whenever you literally say or do anything.

If Rainbow Dash is your favorite character, you haven’t grown past your teenage phase, but you don’t want to admit it. You like the aesthetic of being a sporty person, but the only time you’ve ever done something close to sports was in your high school gym class. Your go to app on your phone is Twitter and you keep downloading health apps, then deleting them the next day because you can’t keep up with routine. You keep all your emotions locked inside and because of that you have major breakdowns out of nowhere. You jump in and out of the My Little Pony fandom like a bi-polar person handles their emotions. And let’s be honest, you’re a cat person.

If Applejack is your favorite character, you are one of the few, possibly only person you know who can actually listen to country music and enjoy it. You either live or grew up on a farm. Or you just like the aesthetic. You work really hard with whatever you do and you like to start arguments because it’s fun. You probably use Youtube on your phone the most and will tell people it’s only to learn new things, when in reality you secretly watch something like ASMR or Mukbang videos.

If Rarity is your favorite character, you are most definitely associated with theatre in some way or another. You use Instagram religiously and you care very much about what you look like. You are also probably extremely dramatic, to the point where it annoys people. You are also one of those people who make it a big deal if you take a picture of them without them knowing beforehand.

If Fluttershy is your favorite character, you are probably known as the “innocent” one in your friend group. You like using Pinterest and know the whole dictionary of aesthetics. You still watch Disney movies well into your adult life and you like cabincore the most. You probably make jewelry or wear excessive amounts of it. You also have a weird obsession with mushrooms and frogs.

love your mood boards, they’re so pretty and you always nail the feeling of whichever character you make them for. If you have a moment, I’m curious about how you make them. Do you figure out what you want in each square and then look for photos that fit or do you do something else? And where do you get all these nice photos?

Thank you so much! I use Pinterest to find all my photos, and how I usually go about it is either starting with character boards I’ve already built for inspiration and working from there, then searching up photos of what I want - say, “pink mushrooms” for a caduceus board or starting right away with searching images if I don’t have a board to start with.

Once I have nine or more I like (I try to find more than nine so I have options), I use Picsart to put them together because it has a handy interface and lots of options for layouts and filters and stuff. Don’t feel like you have to stick to a three by three grid! It’s just what i like, but there’s loads of different layouts you can do. I’ll mess around with the arrangement of the photos till I have something I like. Something that helps me is thinking about the balance of colours or textures, like making sure photos of one colour aren’t all grouped together on one side of the layout. It always takes me a bit to find a layout I like, and a lot of the times I realise I want a different photo so I go back and find more. (Note: I don’t pay for picsart, don’t feel like you have to in order to make nice things. The ads can be annoying and the app can be slow)

Then, I’ll use the curves and adjustments tools in Picsart to make the photos more cohesive. Curves can be tricky, but there’s lots of tutorials online for the adjacent tool in photoshop if you want to use the tool (it’s super helpful for getting nice, cohesive colours). Last thing I do is adding filters or adjustments to the whole board, usually not too much but enough to make it more cohesive. I like to add dust effects, and sometimes I’ll play around with the light leak and shadow effects, but for the latter two I try to keep them subtle. You can also find overlays like that on Pinterest or screenshot them from YouTube overlay videos, the kind made for video editors.

So. ID apps. Do I use them in my classes? Yes, but only iNaturalist, because you get an additional layer of verification by actual human beings rather than just the initial algorithmic suggestions. And, more importantly, I stress again and again and again that apps are NOT to be the only tool you use, but need to be used in conjunction with field guides, online groups, and other tools, which we also discuss in class. This is especially true if you're planning to eat anything you pick.

I get incredibly frustrated by how ID apps are often touted as all you need to identify animals, plants, and fungi. (I've even seen them described as "a Master Naturalist in your pocket".) Yes, it's nice to have a convenient tool on your phone that allows you to take a picture of something and get a suggestion of what it is. But that's all it is--a suggestion. iNaturalist, Google Lens, PlantSnap, and other apps are incapable of critical thinking and observation skills. All they can do is take the visual, temporal, and location data that you give them and churn up suggestions based on whatever they already have in their databases.

Nature identification is a detail-oriented skill that takes time and practice to learn, and if you want to do it right there aren't any one-step shortcuts. Can an app potentially narrow down the possible species you're observing? Sure. But YOU still have to be the one to do the actual work in determining whether the species the app has suggested is the one you're looking at in person or not; you CANNOT just take the app at its word, because apps can often be wrong.

And this is even more the case when we're talking about edible mushrooms, many of which have lookalikes. (Trying to figure out which Little Brown Mushroom you have can be an exercise in frustration, to say the least.) While there are a lot of people getting into foraging who are willing to do the actual work needed to determine a given mushroom's species, there are unfortunately also those who just want quick and easy answers without a lot of effort, and those are the people who are going to go no further than the app's results. The articles that promote apps as the quick and easy answers these people want aren't helping, either.

By the way, I am ALWAYS happy to help people find resources to help them with identifying various beings in nature. I'm also fine with taking a look at photos and giving my perspective on what something may be (though, again, don't use me as your only source.) While I do teach foraging, I am first and foremost a nature identification instructor, and I want to help people go about learning the life forms around them correctly (and in the case of edible species, safely.)

Super late mass update

And the title rhymes.

While I don't suppose a lot of people will read this, I'm pretty much dead everywhere besides discord at the moment [and even there I plan on taking a break] so a, belated, update is in order.

At this point my bird app account is pretty much abandoned and I don't wish to bother with reviving it at all so it's just waiting to rot and disappear, hopefully forever. There wasn't a lot of stuff there to begin with. Unless I decide to move somewhere else, tumblr will be my main platform of contact with people that don't share servers with me. Though I think I'll try my hand at a side art blog…

Anyway, this is a dev update so let's focus on games. Within the months of my inactivity and total radio silence here, a few games were created. Considering I have no idea how far back it should go, I'll start with my bird jam entry that I was a terrible lead for.

BIRD GAME

My total inability to assume responsibilities of my own work aside, the team did their job well. The actual story is finished and working and the only reason why the build has its current name is because I never went around to finish the GUI and the last CG properly and then disappeared for months due to personal reasons. As it stands, the story lacks nothing to enjoy it mostly as it was intended, though I may finally move my ass and update it. Just not now.

After that I took part in the creation of two projects for the queer edition of O2A2. One being a sequel of sorts to Annur's story, featuring Azazel. The other a very rushed personal project. Rushed only because I felt like making it at the moment and its quality only confirms that.

I won't really say much about either of them as due to the nature of the jam, they're naturally very short. I think both have around 700 words each? It would be cool if you checked Azazel out, though. That 'saga' might eventually get a third part. It's also pretty different from Annur's story, less horny and with a different artstyle… Or maybe just medium.

The newest creation is my submission to Orifice jam. Despite how it might sound, or maybe exactly because of that, the entries [planned ones included] are pretty cool. Not a lot of them at the moment of writing this post, though.

Both here and in my O2A2 short I decided to use the style that comes the most naturally to me. Maybe it wasn't a good idea, it's pretty avant garde and bizarro leaning, if I say so, though at the same time pretty normal and grounded. But those are my standards of normal, don't trust them. They're also chock-full of reference, although this time, based on the previous feedback, I tried explaining the most important ones. Everything else is still a bonus most likely no one would get. I just can't stop myself.

After that comes Mushroom jam which I'd recommend to join if you have even the slightest interest in the topic. It starts in september [technically august in almost all time zones] and is supposed to be as crunch free as possible, lasting three months and all. You can read the details on the page. It's a spiritual successor of Bird Jam and in a way OH jam as I ended up hosting a jam each year, always with a different theme, and plan to continue doing so, even if there ends up being close to no interest.

This also relates to my planned projects. As of now there are two main ones, one that I help with and is still a secret, two-three that I'd either finish someday or not and multiple "maybe if I get inspired to actually write" ones. Generally as long as it's written by me, it's likely to be on an unpopular topic or written in a way most people don't seem to like but as I have the most funn with these, well ¯_(ツ)_/¯ No one pays me for that, might as well.

Since there's no reason to disclose anything on the "maybe" category projects and the secret one, let's focus on the two main ones and these that probably should get finished.

Going by the chronology of planned releases, the first would be a some sort of SF story for sunofes playing with the idea of Agartha, Wanderers etc. I can't even promise what kind of mood it would have but given my lack of science skills, it would be closer to soft SF, if that's even a term that's used. Think analogous to soft fantasy but SF. Probably "interactive fiction" [actually kinetic, no choices, linear] with illustrations more so than vn as I wanted to write something longer than usual that's still moderately low effort. Not getting the urge to create custom gui really lessens the workload~~

The other project is for Spooktober, Mushroom jam or both. I kind of feel like it would be cheating, given the insignificant amount of fungi in the story but we'll see. Due to Spooktober rules, it's still in planning stage, though I'm starting design sketches. No idea if I manage to pull it off but I wanted to try something different style wise, with isometric view that changes depending on MC's mental state. It's honestly a lot of work for one person so I'm not even deluding myself I'll finish it for Spooktober, it would be just free exposure at this point :') Especially important as the SEO is going to be absolutely terrible and horrendous, being a yet another reference [created from two of my ideas that mutated and merged]. At least the non game results would explain what exactly was I referencing lol

If I actually manage to pull it off, it's gonna be the coolest looking of all my personal projects. Not that there's strong competition but still. Hope it works out.

From the stuff to finish, there's the above-mentioned bird game, Argousze and Red String Theory. RST's development doesn't exactly rely on my so it either remains a demo or the whole team gathers again to finish it. In the meantime I can draw my pretty boi Adisa whenever I want. As for Argousze, it's been close to three or four years since its initial release. I feel like I should finish it eventually, being ad short as it is but I kind of dislike the ending of the initial idea + had problems with designing aliens I liked so it either changes or gets a sequel/part with alien's pov as comparison, not sure yet. The pov change would have a completely different tone but would help me with my SoL sentai later on and as such requires further consideration. Hopefully it's finished before the fifth release anniversary passes.

Other than that there's some art etc related stuff going on but as it's not strictly dev related, I'll omit it. The whole post ended up quite long, as expected but that's what happens when you update people once a year. See you[?] next time.
