Hello again neighbors, it's been a while since I used this blog but I gonna start to change that now as I have been getting into Welcome Home again.

The story and extra information about the character will be below "read more" and credits to @fetusmeme for the character sheet template.

"Show introduction"

Acerola Suave is one of the older members of the community, but she hasn't been there as much as Wally Darling. Her background hasn't been touched so much in the show but with the bits of lore that she or someone else mentioned and even clues from inside her house, the story put together is as follows.

Acerola, who went from another name never revealed to the public, lived in a small town of reptiles like her, but she craved more, adventuring, self-discovery, and freedom. At some point, she met a guy with whom she had a son, but given that he isn't in the picture or living with her, is safe to assume that the guy either died or left.

Acerola got to the small town without knowing she ended up there, her house is in the forest near a swamp, so when she heard music, laughing, and chatting, she found out that she had arrived in a place like no other.

The books and episodes will often show Acerola not appearing in the neighborhood unless it's with her son or during an event like a party, or a holiday.

But when Waly and his friends go visit her, she's in her element, more talkative and expressive, using the help of her special bug cards, which are bugs she calls that form a position for her to read them, riddles, puzzles, and even branches from the trees, she's able to assist her neighbors with whatever issue they might be having if it involves nature.

However, Acerola would soon disappear from the books and episodes, there was even one titled "Good Bye to a Friend", where Wally, despite smiling, tells the viewer he's sad, that a friend of the neighborhood left, he doesn't know where they went or if they will even come back, or even write to them, but later, in a book, Wally tells the story of this episode in more detail, he says that is Acerola who he's missing, that she "sensed something" and left without a word, not even a goodbye letter, even her tarot bugs were gone.

"Inspirations"

Acerola is a gift/commissioned character for my sister, we were brainstorming the idea for a character cause she loved the art style, so I went ahead and gave her a heads up and we started thinking of ideas.

Immediately she suggested a chameleon, and I researched various species, but sadly I couldn't choose one, so I went with the generic route.

Her theming and personality align a lot with my sister IRL, she practices Tarot reading as well as witchcraft, claiming herself to be a nature witch, and she sometimes calls to talk about it or invites me to rituals, and they are quite a relaxing thing.

and her son is also a reference to her, my nephew!.

"Extra information"

Parents would complain a lot about Acerola smoking from a pipe in the books, but this was addressed quickly as The herbs were used to help Acerola deal better with her mental health;

on the other hand, solo mothers would praise the authors for showing the pretty and the ugly when it comes to raising a child on their own, Wally often showing up to babysit or keep an eye on Lua, as well as the other characters, Howdy seems to be the one who gets asked to watch over the little cricket the most, as the little guy has lots of fun with him;

Frank and Acerola share a lot of bug fun facts with each other;

She and Poppy get along extremely well, most fans assume that is because of Poppy's motherly nature while Acerola has a son of her own, they also think that perhaps Poppy acts as a teacher to little Lua.

Something I try to keep in mind when making art that looks vintage is keeping a limited color pallette. Digital art gives you a very wide, Crisp scope of colors, whereas traditional art-- especially older traditional art-- had a very limited and sometimes dulled use of color.

This is a modern riso ink swatch, but still you find a similar and limited selection of colors to mix with. (Mixing digitally as to emulate the layering of ink riso would be coloring on Multiply, and layering on top of eachother 👉)

If you find some old prints, take a closer look and see if you can tell what colors they used and which ones they layered... a lot of the time you'll find yellow as a base!

Misprints can really reveal what colors were used and where, I love misprints...

Something else I keep in the back of my mind is: how the human eye perceives color on paper vs. a screen. Ink and paint soaks into paper, it bleeds, stains, fades over time, smears, ect... the history of a piece can show in physical wear. What kind of history do you want to emulate? Misprinted? Stained? Kept as clean as possible, but unable to escape the bluing damages of the sun? It's one of my favorite things about making vintage art. Making it imperfect!

You can see the bleed, the wobble of the lines on the rug, the fading, the dirt... beautiful!!

Thinking in terms of traditional-method art while drawing digital can help open avenues to achieving that genuine, vintage look!

Terry Terrific is a Unicorns who moved to the small town of "Home" after feeling nauseated and not as inspired as he was in the city, wanting to expand his horizons, he finds a letter speaking of a beautiful place where no matter who you are, you'll always be welcomed.

In the episode where Terry is introduced, he moves to the town and speaks various slang from the big city and a bit about himself when he lived there, he was the owner of an amazing boutique called "The Lunar Carrousel", however, as time went on, he felt more and more underappreciated by his peers over how he chose to advertise and make his clothes, his slogan being that clothes should be like a smile, it should look good on anyone.

Wally tries his best to talk to the new neighbor, but he always seems to scare him, he wonders what he's doing wrong to the audience, waiting for an answer, he looks at the "camera" but later says

"Hmmm, that's a good point, maybe a different approach would be better, not everyone likes how you do some things, but you can always try something different."

Eventually, he sees Terry talking about his life with Sally, who seems to be a close friend of his, once the unicorn is out of the picture, he asks Sally how he should approach Terry, he seems scared of him, but he doesn't know why.

"Oh my sweet Star," she says with Glee, "Terry is simply a sensitive person, he gets surprised easily and admittedly he does not enjoy them, however, if you were to approach him with something he might like, maybe he'd be more open to try and be your friend."

"What does he like?"

"hmmm, he really likes sewing...Maybe that can work."

Wally nods, thanks his friend, and walks away towards home. He asks "Home" about sewing, prompting Home to open his closet,

"Oh! So sewing is related to clothing...Hey, that reminds me, my Halloween costume is pretty beaten up, it's my favorite...I wonder if Terry can help me."

He walks over to Terry but keeps in mind what Sally told him, to not surprise him or startle him. He gently pokes the unicorn's shoulder and gives him a warm welcome, nothing eccentric, just a simple "Welcome Home".

The Host proceeds to explain the situation with his costume, prompting Terry to change his demeanor and immediately start analyzing the costume, he says he can tell that it meant a lot, the fabric is stretched, meaning it was worn many times for years until it couldn't fit, showing sentimental value.

"But not to worry!" Terry said with a warm smile, "I'll be fixing this up real quick, darling!"

10 minutes later, he was done with it, improving the stitching, selecting new patches of fabric, and even replacing the horns.

From this episode onward, Terry becomes a character that loves to play dress up, show how to express one's self through clothing, and how to safely make costumes for the children.

And now, some fun facts

-Terry loves citrus fruit, oranges, tangerines, lemon, you name it;

-Frank is a good friend of Terry, along with Howdy and Sally, who is his best friend;

-Even when they get along nicely, Terry still gets startled by Wally, his main reason being that he can't hear his footsteps, and he even says how weird that is considering horses have Really great hearing;

-Terry disappeared near the end of the show, Ina episode dedicated to misunderstandings, Wally says that maybe he scared Terry so much, he left, but he never got to explain himself, leading to Wally wondering what could have been done, this episode was taken out of the air due to how sad it felt.

I've been stitching some cicadas lately. This year is going to be a big one for the screaming bugs!

For those interested in making their own cross stitched cicadas, the patterns are available for sale here and here! (Please note: my software skills mean that I had to freehand the AAAAAs rather than place them in the pattern itself, so those are not included in the patterns. This does mean that you can make these little guys uniquely your own and add any sort of scream that you'd like, though!)
