It was a strange thing, having a ball in the middle of a war. But the fighting had settled into a near impasse as they waited on more intel to provide a lead on where to find Cia. That left them to regroup and strengthen their borders. Link usually was on the front lines for such matters, but as Zelda had returned to the castle, she called him to come with her.
Link had begun to learn that the war had more impacts than he'd realized, and politics were no less important now than they were before the fighting had ever begun. Dealing with nobles was tiresome, and he wasn't entirely sure why he was dragged into it, but clearly Zelda wanted his company. The captain felt distinctly underprepared for such a task, but he tried as best he could.
He had stumbled a few times, said things that he immediately realized were inappropriate based on the reactions of those around him. He'd tried instead to just keep his mouth shut, to let Proxi do the talking for him, but Link was a very opinionated man and couldn't keep quiet about things for long. Proxi had taken to bonking him lightly on the head when he was about to get fired up. He still had much to learn in this strange, invisible battlefield.
But a ball? This... this was completely out of his elemnt.
Not that he didn't enjoy the elegance of it, the opportunity to clean up and look nice and not attract the attention of the entire room - looking good was the expectation here, and he could just play a role and not be the centerpiece.
Since when had he liked playing a role instead of being the leader?
Link sighed tiredly. He wasn't really sure what was wrong with him anymore. Maybe he was sick of being the center of attention because of Cia's obsession. It attracted far too much flak for him. It wasn't like he'd wanted a war started because of him - the sorceress didn't even make sense. If she was after him, why would she be obsessed with eliminating the queen instead?
Speaking of the queen, Zelda eyed him strangely as music started to play. She approached him with her hand steadily and gracefully reaching out to him. He took hers, genuflecting and kissing it respectfully. The queen smiled, her thumb wrapping around his fingers to latch a hold on him, and she pulled him to stand. Once on his feet again, he moved to let go, but she held even tighter, pulling him to the dance floor.
Oh. Oh, goddesses, wait, he barely knew any dances--
The music rang familiar, and relief flooded him. Zelda giggled at his expression, and he felt his cheeks flush. He'd never heard her giggle before, and he suddenly felt very exposed being in the center with the queen as everyone watched.
The beat hit, and Zelda pulled him to her. Their faces were mere centimeters apart, the smell of her hair invading his nose and making his skin tingle. He tried to reel himself in--this is the queen, get yourself together, moron--and took a step back to reorient, but Zelda wouldn't let him. The pair twirled in rhythm with the music, an automatic movement from a familiar dance that everyone in the city had learned at some point in their lives, and Link desperately tried give himself some space. Zelda's eyes didn't leave his, as intense as they usually were in battle.
The queen smiled, her severe expression finally softening. "I've always thought of this moment."
Link felt a strange uneasiness pull at him, and he smiled awkwardly. What was she talking about?
The queen finally gave him the space he was so desperately trying to achieve, stepping away as the two stepped in time, held together by the hands like a thread keeping them from being torn apart. They stepped to be back-to-back, grip still held tenderly, other arms reaching over their heads to clasp their partner. They released the hold behind their backs, letting their overhand hold guide them to twirl and face each other once more.
"You look really good tonight," she commented with a smile.
Link swallowed. "T-thank you."
Was it... was it okay to say she looked pretty too? He probably shouldn't.
The room grew hazy as they turned again, and Zelda moved to him again, pressing herself against his body. He stiffened immediately, natural reactions at war with his brain - this wasn't how the dance was supposed to go.
Zelda's hands were warm on his back, her eyes intense once more. Link forgot how to breathe. The queen's own cheeks blushed ever so slightly, and she huffed out a shaky laugh, stepping away to continue the dance in the traditional manner.
Link took the opportunity to stare somewhere pointedly away from the queen, swallowing hard. His eyes caught sight of Lana, a strange melancholy expression on her face, and it ripped him out of the moment. The blue haired sorceress recognized he was watching her, and she quickly schooled her expression into a strained, reassuring smile.
Zelda pulled his attention once more as she ended the dance with a hand behind his neck, drawing him down to her. Their eyes met again, and she released her hold with a laugh, patting his cheek with a careful hand.
"I'm glad to finally know you, Hero," she said softly as the crowd applauded. "On and off the battlefield. It's truly an honor."
Link... didn't know how to feel about those words. He felt like he was getting whiplash, caught between the queen's body language and her statements, and he wasn't sure which one he was supposed to listen to or even like. He felt a bit of his old confidence return, soaking up the attention and growing in triumph at such an acknowledgement. But at the same time, he felt disjointed, being talked to as if he were a legend rather than a person.
The queen walked away to attend to her subjects, leaving him confused. He saw a flash of blue and flicked his gaze to the right to see Lana leaving the ballroom. Worried, he tried to walk after her but was cut off by the crowds, and suddenly he had to hide his worries and mixed feelings behind a smile.
He sighed. Balls were certainly... different.

10 Black Roses by The Rasmus.
So I first heard this song when I watched the below video. (Which came out 12 years ago damn I feel old). And I loved it. So for the longest time when I heard the song it just made me think of Transformers. Which it still does make me think of TF.
However now that I am older it has a lot more meanings. It makes me think of my childhood, it makes me think about my heartbreaks, it makes me think about myself and my inner demons.
If I listen to it when I am happy I think 'Woo Transformers song' but when I listen to it when I am sad it makes me more sad lol.
I attached it so everyone can share in its beauty. BTW I can not believe I found this video, I am so glad it is still on YouTube.

Sometimes, when he got sick of screaming in the bathtub, he'd go out at night. Walk into the forest, away from town, where no one could see him take off his clothes, one by one. Where no one could hear his bone crack and transform him into something monstrous, ugly.
His own father could never love him - it only took Tyler 16 years to find out why.
He hated his hyde, but sometimes he also wished he could transform into it more often. Scare a deer or two, fight off a bear. Sneak behind a camper and give them a scare. He'd never kill anything, though. Not unless he was ordered to.
The battlefield in his mind seemed to quiet down when he was in his hyde form, letting his animal instincts take over, his senses sharpening and his human awareness slowly fading, things like right and wrong wilting away from his consciousness.
The features of a certain girl also seemed to blur the longer he spent in his monster form. One night, when the morning dawned and he found himself naked on the forest floor again, he wondered how many more nights like these it would take for him to lose any and all humanity he had left.
