movie ask: every year of the 1980s, every year of the 1990s
You gravely underestimate how Many 80s films I have watched since October alone but for you I’ll try:
1980 - split between Ninth configuration and Cruising which are more similar films than you’d expect.
1981 - Possession, enough said
1982 - John Carpenter’s DAT THANG
1983 - Agh so many good movies for perverts in this year (Videodrome, The Hunger, Christine, Merry Christmas Mr Lawerence) I think The Hunger wins out because when I was watching it I genuinely couldn’t believe something so indulgent to my vampire obsessed teenage self could exist
1984 - I would’ve said Nausicaä of the Valley of the Wind until quite recently because it is genuinely so excellent but it might be the fucking Karate Kid like it’s a beautiful little time capsule and I refuse to be embarrassed about it
1985 - Desert Hearts, or Tampopo, literally watched it again today
1986 - The Hitcher, lovingly shot footage of that twink getting obliterated for an hour and forty minutes
1987 - I could be a liar and say Not The Lost boys but the poster is on my fucking door complete with bat stickers like a shrine so obviously it’s The Lost Boys
1988 - Fuck. high camp battle royal between, Killer Klowns from outer space, The blob and Lair of the White worm
1989 - The Parents, absolutely brilliant has the feel of a Ray Bradbury story

Movie year 2014?
send me a year and i'll tell you my favourite movie of that year
Ah, 2014. In Ireland, we have these massive exams at the end of our final year of secondary school (high school) that determine what college courses we qualify for, called the Leaving Certificate.
On the eve of the first of the exams, my Aunt took me to the cinema for one last piece of relaxation before the massive stress of the next two weeks.
Having never watched the show or the prior movie, we saw The Inbetweeners 2.
It was the awkward, cringeworthy experience of my life. I have no idea why that show is beloved by British people of my generation.
Anyway, on to the good stuff. 2013 reignited a love of animation in me, and there were some damn good movies this year. Big Hero 6 and How To Train Your Dragon 2 were great films.
It was also quite possibly the best year of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, as the two films they released were the iconic Captain America: The Winter Soldier and the beloved Guardians of the Galaxy. And this is also one of the few years Fox put up some resistance, as X-Men: Days of Future Past is point-blank one of the best X-Men films. Shame Sony screwed up their offering.
Though speaking of action, this was also the year we met John Wick. Meanwhile Kingsman: The Secret Service showed us how traditional, cheesy/campy Bond can work in the modern world; and Edge of Tomorrow/Live.Die.Repeat./Live.Die.Repeat: Edge of Tomorrow is some fantastic sci-fi, even if the studio flip-flopped on the title. The original Japanese light novel is called All You Need Is Kill, to add to the confusion.
And if we're talking about action, I legally have to bring up The Raid 2: Berendal, even if I haven't been able to watch that in full.
Personally I think The Theory of Everything was the better of the two biopics about British scientists that came out this year.
While I'm not the biggest fan of horror (I'm a scaredy cat), It Follows is fucking amazing, absolutely loved it.
To go to horror-comedy, What We Do In The Shadows has been a surprisingly impactful movie for a little indie film from New Zealand.
And 22 Jump Street is great, even if it's been tarnished by recent accusations against Jonah Hill.
...but for my favourite? Why it's the other Lord and Miller film of 2014. Before they gave us the massive crossover of the Spiderverse, they gave us the massive crossover that was The Lego Movie. I still have a minifig of Vitruvius on my shelf. Up until 2021, I had a newspaper poster of the movie hanging on my wall. I just loved it.

Question #18
@wirepaladin asked...
18, please. Movie posters used to be amazing and now they seem to be an after thought for studios.
"18. What film do you think has the coolest poster?"
This is an interesting one for me because I admit I don't usually pay much attention to posters. But you're right, even I can tell they're not what they used to be.
I've always liked the 1974 Murder on the Orient Express poster, with the train on the handle of the dagger and the cast surrounding it. I used to have a copy of the book with this on the cover.
Tumblr media
And then Death on the Nile followed a similar pattern in 1978, with the cheeky addition of the Egyptian figure holding a pistol.
Tumblr media
Another one that deserves mention is the poster for Bram Stoker's Dracula (1992). A friend of mine has a framed print of this one. Not only is it a striking design visually, but it does a great job of conveying the feel of the film.

2017, GO!
You're gonna make me have to choose between Coco, Captain Underpants, and The Lego Batman Movie???
How dare you.
Did you choose this year because it's when boss baby and the emoji movie came out because if you did I'm blocking u /s
I refuse to choose between Coco and The Lego Batman Movie actually. I literally can't. They're both too good.

7 and 8 for the film ask!
7. Answered!
8. Has a film ever made you extremely angry?
The Time Machine (that’s not how time travel would work!!)
Signs (as an agnostic deist teen, I was theologically opposed to and offended by depictions of miracle-based faith PLUS it’s just a stupid movie lol)
The Hobbit movies (maybe not extremely angry… just disappointed)
Dirty Harry (copaganda)
The Beguiled (justice for that turtle, fr)
Goldfinger (I think it was that one? and James Bond movies generally, but especially the older ones)
Leon the Professional (I hear the non-extended edition isn’t as obviously pedophilic but yeah wtf)
A Clockwork Orange (I just… find it triggering tbh)
The Wolf On Wall Street (I know depiction does not equal endorsement but damn did this movie revel in the shit it was supposedly condemning)
Love Actually (more annoying than enraging but)
Jurassic World (ugh Chris Pratt’s whole character and the dynamic between him and Claire was dumb and gross and then the way [spoiler?] dies wtffff)
Beauty and the Beast: The Enchanted Christmas (idk, I saw this when I was 9 and I knew even at that age it had no right to exist)

Can I get uhhh *stares at menu* one horror movie suggestion and... *looks to people in the backseat* one fantasy recommendation and a side of your mini review of each *drives off into the sunset* 🌇
Lol, okay yeah.

#12: Horror Genre Movie
Scream (1996)
I honestly think the scream franchise as a whole is one of the best. It's just so iconic, I love it. And the first film will always be one of my all time favorites. Great at keeping the tension, great twists, gnarly kills, it's great. (And who doesn't love that classic knife wipe!)
Tumblr media
#15: Fantasy Genre Movie
Dungeons & Dragons: Honor Among Thieves (2023)
Honestly, I went in not expecting much from this movie. As someone who plays DND I was weary of how they were gonna capture the feeling and magic of the game. But somehow they did it. It was a great movie and a fun adventure and it had the feel of an actual DND party. I could hear the DM face palming at the players ridiculous plans. It was great. Highly recommend even if you don't play DND or know anything about it. It's a great standalone fantasy film on its own.

1985 and/or 2007 for the movie ask meme
Omg thank you ♥️♥️
1985 - definitely Clue but obviously Breakfast Club is a close second. These are two movies I was obsessed with in high school and the ripple effects they had on my personality in equal but opposite ways can still be felt today ♥️
2007 - Ratatouille. I was looking thru a list of 2007 films and this is one of like three that I’ve seen and would watch again lmao it seemed to be a very mixed bag of quality that year and my 13 year old self had bad taste 💔 But Ratatouille has stood the test of time and is still a masterpiece 🐀👨🏻‍🍳🥘

5, 8 and 13 for the movie asks :)
5. What is your favourite genre of movies?
Probably thrillers! I feel like most of my favourites are thrillers or crime and I'm usually in the mood for a good thriller.
8. YES. MANY TIMES. Once again, I'm such a hater! Here's some examples coming to mind:
Mulholland Drive, Drive, X, Oldboy, Halloween, The Usual Suspects, Memento, The Handmaiden...
These were either big disappointments, super boring, or just so stupid and I didn't like em at all. Park Chan-Wook films probably aren't for me lol
13. What is your comfort film?
Love this question but it's so difficult to answer! Here's some coming to mind:
Paddington 2, Glass Onion, The Nice Guys, Bullet Train, Bridget Jones films, Saw (2004) and Notting hill
Nooo I don't like Hugh Grant at all what are you saying 😭
Thanks for asking!

Hi!!
14. Who is your favorite director? Why?
19. What part of filmmaking do you find most interesting (ie. sound design, costuming, set design, etc)?
@wilsonthemoose thanks for the ask!
14. Hitchcock. Every frame of every scene is meticulously planned out and executed for maximum intended effect. He's a man after my own meticulous, detail-oriented heart.
19. I answered this previously, so I'll pick a few more things I'm fascinated with:
Lighting, visual effects (especially practical effects like forced perspective), fight choreography/stunts (huge Jackie Chan fan over here).

1 and 9! <3
Hi, thanks for the ask @wren-of-the-woods!
What is your current favorite film?
Lord of the Rings: the Return of the King. I just watched it again after seeing a few videos from the end of the lord of the rings musical, and gosh it hit so hard. It usually does but the ending was so much more bittersweet. I love the speeches, and just. I don't know how long it is but like, the entire last 30-45 minutes it makes me feel so much and it usually takes a bit for movies to do that for me. I adore all three movies, but the Return of the King is just 👌, and the movie and I share a birthday!
9. What was the last movie you watched? What did you think of it?
I think that was Beauty and the Beast, I watched the original then the remake. I enjoyed both. I really like some of the visuals in the remake, but I still prefer the original.

2003 for the movie ask game? :O
send me a year and i'll tell you my favourite movie of that year
Okay, I just wanna start us off with this:
While Terminator 3: Rise of the Machines is not a good movie, they fucking nailed the ending. It was a bold move that most of the Terminator films since then have tried to walk back, and I feel like that's contributed to them not being the best they could be.
Onto better films. Or maybe not. Brother Bear was on repeat in my house as a kid, it probably doesn't hold up today, but I still bear some fondness for it.
Other kids films? I like Finding Nemo, but it did leave me with a lifelong fear of Anglerfish and other deep-sea creatures. And also deep-sea footage. And may have killed my childhood fondness for the ocean.
...Looney Tunes: Back In Action was a great film. And my first exposure to the Daleks. Holes, also a great film, though I feel like I don't like it as much as Americans who grew up with the story. Rugrats Go Wild was fun, but was never my preferred Rugrats movie as a kid. Spy Kids 3D is iconic to this day, of course. Not the best Spy Kids, but still memorable. And School of Rock is School of Rock. No bad words about it.
As for some adult movies, I remember seeing Phone Booth a lot as a kid, great performance from Colin Farrell. X2 to this day is still one of the best X-Men movies. I still remember how to spell "beautiful" thanks to Jim Carrey in Bruce Almighty. 28 Days Later is a fucking amazing film. Bad Boys II is iconic action cinema, and in my opinion miles better than the first simply for lacking a scene where jokes are made about a dead woman's breasts. Similarly, while honestly a bit iffy nowadays, Kill Bill: Volume 1 is worth watching at least once.
And before we reach the finalists, an honorable mention to the most memetic movie of 2003: The Room. Never have I seen a movie more deserving of the title "so bad it's good".
But in the end, it's a damn tough decision. Both of these movies make me cry. But I have to call Lord of the Rings: The Return of the King the runner-up here, despite the awards from The Academy.
I am always going to love Love, Actually. It hasn't aged the best, there are some elements that aren't great anymore, but I have watched it every year since I first saw it. It is a beautiful movie.

Hello, movie questions number 13, please
13. What is your comfort film?
It's gotta be My Neighbor Totoro. I went through a major medical procedure several years ago, and at one point, I watched that movie three nights in a row: original Japanese version, old dub, and new (Disney) dub.
I'd give runner-up status to Enchanted April, Strictly Ballroom, and Jodhaa Akbar.

For the ask game! 2014?
One of my top three favourite movies, Big Hero 6 :D I remember when SeeD made me watch it and I was really against it, didn't look interesting enough from the poster. Then they made me start it, and I got OBSESSED with it.
(6/10 movie, had one of the objectively lamest Disney villains of that era, will forever be one of my favourites)
Honorable mentions:
When Marnie was there, made me cry.
The Lego Movie (need I say more?)
How to train your dragon 2.

(If you are still doing the film asks!) 4. 9., and 15. :)
4. Answered!
9. What was the last movie you watched? What did you think of it?
Cleopatra (1963)! I liked it, I think, mostly? I didn’t do it in one sitting or even one day—it’s 4 hours long and it felt it. It was uneven, but some parts were very good. Richard Burton in a skimpy Roman skirt and Elizabeth Taylor in an endless array of beautifully garish low-cut dresses, acting their hearts out! I wouldn’t recommend it unless you’re curious about big ancient historical epics of the 50s and 60s (even those considered less-good, like this) or interested in some cast members. But it was neat.
15. What is the funniest movie you've seen?
This is so hard. Hmmm, probably the funniest movie I think I’ve seen RECENTLY is “Totally Killer.” I found myself laughing a lot, but I’d be extremely hesitant to call it the funnest movie I’ve ever seen. (It’s kind of a pastiche of “Scream”, “Back to the Future”, and “The Breakfast Club”—toss in some “Only Murders In The Building” and “Modern Family.” I didn’t have high expectations, but I really enjoyed it.)
K, I came up with some movies I think are funny, but I’d hesitate to call ANY of them “the funniest!” so, here’s a very tentative top 10 (no particular order):
The Nice Guys
Booksmart
Monty Python and the Holy Grail
Wet Hot American Summer
Marcel The Shell With Shoes On
Robin Hood: Men In Tights (prob doesn’t hold up?)
The Birdcage
The General
Totally Killer
The Princess Bride
