5 & 8 for the movie challenge game! 🍿
Juuuuuuuuuuuuuules! Your wish is my command, gorgeous lady 💗
5. A black and white film I have a lot of classics that really strike chords with me, but one of my all-time favourites with a huge amount of recognition that I'm surprised more people haven't heard of is the 1934 Oscar winner It Happened One Night. Claudette Colbert and Clark Gable at the top of their comedic game. It's absolute gold. Extremely clever and well-written.
Tumblr media
8. A film set in a place you've always wanted to visit While there are soooo many possible answers here, I'm going to go with another one of my all-time favourites here, this time in the romance category. Somewhere in Time is a 1980 love story about a playwright played by Christopher Reeve who goes to a hotel to seclude himself and finish his next play. There he sees a photo of an actress who spent time at the hotel in 1912 (played by Jane Seymour) and falls instantly, completely in love with her. The playwright travels back in time to meet his muse and the hotel itself is a remarkable setting for their affair. It's still the only movie to ever have been filmed at the Grand Hotel on Mackinac Island, and it is a stunning love letter to the building and its grounds as much as it is to the characters. (@absurdthirst and I are actually working on a fic inspired by this film that features the TF boys post-WW2)

Media Challenges
Saw a post on how reading should be quality over quantity.
On the one hand I totally agree. On the other hand, I can’t read anything I don’t want to read unless I’m grinding and I get into ruts, so I try to trick myself by setting arbitrary goals and challenges. It’s what works for my weird brain. At least some of the time.
I usually aim for 100 books a year. This year I also aimed for 20,000 pages on Storygraph, and I had a Reading Bingo I devised for myself.
I am in fact always reading but this way I make sure a) I’m not just rereading faves, b) I’m not just reading fanfic or web novels, and c) I’m trying a variety of genres and authors.
So how am I doing so far? I am actually well beyond the goal on paper but a lot of the stuff I read (danmei) I decided not to record on Storygraph or Goodreads, just in my notebook so I still have one to read to make my goal in Storygraph. The pages are done. The Reading Bingo I relaxed some categories so I only miss one but the category is Tagalog and I’m giving up on that. It’s hard and I hate that it’s hard. (Or maybe I’ll read one of my Tagalog comic books and mark that off…)
The Reading Bingo was enough of a success that I made up a new one for next year AND made a smaller movie bingo as well (3 by 3 rows) coz I find it difficult to sit through them.
Book categories include literary classic, children’s classic and sci fi classic, friend’s rec, 2023 release, cottage core, cozy fantasy and solarpunk/cli-fi, among others.
Movie categories are campy horror, mystery, classic, queer romance, SFF, foreign language, animated, short film and documentary.
It’s just a way to make it more fun. I can get a bit competitive with the books but 100 is sort of a natural number for me. If something happens and I am far behind I would adjust my goal accordingly.
I just have to say that it’s really difficult to devise rewards for myself since I indulge myself anyway. So for next year I have to restrain myself to just buying 10 books for the whole year and then any bingo line I finish I can add another book to that number. I’m not sure I won’t just lose my head and splurge but we will see.
There’s no reward for the movie bingo except being able to hit the categories I set for myself.
Aside from these I also aim to watch at least one movie in theatres and one live performance—usually a play—per year. I actually watched 2 of both this year. Dungeons & Dragons and Spiderverse 2, and for the plays The Addams Family Musical and a raunchy comedy called The Birds and the Bees.

2. answered!
5. a black and white film
I could say... Andrei Rublev (1966) dir. Andrei Tarkovsky. but it's one of my favorite movies ever. So i'm gonna pick another one
The Cranes Are Flying (1957) dir. Mikhail Kalatozov Just watch it. Think about it: it's Soviet Union, black and white, war movie... but cinematography is so fresh and innovative. When camera circles around dying Alexei Batalov's character.. this is something else. The whole thing is a visual masterpiece.

6. a film released before 1960
Cat on a Hot Tin Roof (1958) dir. Richard Brooks Because I love being bisexual and I also love Tennessee Williams.

19 & 20!
19. A film that is a novel or play adaptation. In keeping with my tradition of telling favourites, I'm actually gonna give two to this one. The first is the film adaptation of A.S. Byatt's Possession staring Aaron Eckhart and Gwyneth Paltrow as poetry scholars who uncover and trace a historical love affair involving the poets they study. I am personally not a GP fan *at all* but the film is absolutely stunning regardless. It's a beautifully written romance told in two timelines.
The second is 1940 Alfred Hitchcock version of Daphne DuMarier's novel Rebecca. Du Marier and Hitchcock are a suspense lover's perfect combination and Joan Fontaine' makes an's arrestingly vulnerable portrayal of the Second Mrs. de Winter is exceptionally engaging. Try to watch this one with no interruptions, it's worth it for the building tension.
Tumblr media
20. A musical film Okay...this is hard. Because musicals are my absolute JAM. So I'm going to pick something way out of left field hoping that maybe it will be a new film you haven't heard of and you might give it a try. Brian de Palma's 1974 rock musical horror-comedy Phantom of the Paradise is a Faustian tale of a songwriter who makes a deal that affects far more than just him and his own success. The music is phenomenal and the film itself locks you in as a zeitgeist of the 70s. The soundtrack is on constant rotation on my Spotify.
