at the request of absolutely nobody, i present my vaguely fleshed out steddie mummy au

sources: i still own the mummy on vhs

there’s a possibility that the whole story of hamunaptra could be tweaked a bit to fit the story of henry creel/vecna/one into imhotep’s story, but the actual nitty gritty doesn’t matter as much as the actual dynamics and relationships between stobin and eddie. the important part is that a man is cursed to be buried alive, immortal but destined to awaken only to take vengeance.

fast forward and eddie munson ends up drafted into the military. (rick is apart of the french foreign legion stationed in egypt, and i’m not entirely sure how he manages it but eddie munson is apparently a colonel). things happen and eddie finds himself running away from the battlefield, only to stumble upon the ruins of hamunaptra. except they aren’t really ruins and hamunaptra is a myth. so he runs, but when he gets back to the city, alone and half dead, eddie finds that in his rush to leave, he’s grabbed some sort of puzzle box.

at the same time, one robin buckley has dedicated her life to learning more about ancient egypt. her passion for languages led her down a rabbit hole, and she drags her brother steve to egypt with her for further study.

robin is set up with a job at a small museum, working as an archivist. unfortunately, it’s a lot more tedious than she anticipated. it would be a lot better if she could work with steve, but forgetting his glasses at home nearly everyday isn’t super helpful when it comes to trying to sort books.

so what is steve doing in egypt, you may ask? evie’s brother jonathan in the movie literally schlepped around egypt fucking around with his sister and figuring out his next get rich scheme. steve isn’t really the type to open up his own nightclub in shanghai (a la the mummy: tomb of the dragon emperor), but just like jonathan, steve happens to stumble across a cryptex containing a map of the lost city of hamunaptra.

as an aside: i see steve doing the same minimum wage jobs he did in hawkins, just in egypt. i think it would be funny and makes so much more sense to me than him kind of skulking around for news of possible treasure. (bonus: the party in egypt, and dustin coming up to steve with a “brand new discovery” and it’s eddie’s puzzle box that he’s swiped. (THOUGH NOTE: evie and jonathan’s family is Rich. Rich Loaded. Rich Loaded British. So honestly, he doesn’t even have to work)

either way, when robin opens the cryptex and finds the map, she’s astonished. this is what she’s dreamed of her whole life—being an explorer and discovering lost civilizations. so she gets steve to find out where the puzzle box came from. his search leads them to the prison, where eddie munson is destined for execution.

the two of them talk to eddie, and eddie tells robin he’s seen hamunaptra in person. he’s been there. he’s walked the same sand that pharaohs had and seen the ruins that no other have laid their hands on. but eddie refuses to tell them the location, but steve convinces (bribes) the warden to let him go.

so the three of them set off to the city of the dead.

the details of the trip would make this post way too long, but i’m thinking about dynamics rn…

eddie is a little standoffish at first, sure that these rich kids won’t be able to handle themselves, and he’ll be stuck carting around two spoiled brats. and robin and steve don’t necessarily trust him. robin is wide eyed and blinded by eddie’s knowledge of hamunaptra, but steve keeps trying to keep her in check.

at first, eddie thinks steve is cold to him because of some upstairs/downstairs prejudice or big brother protectiveness. and eddie flirts even harder with robin, delighted every time he sees a scowl on steve’s face. even if robin keeps rolling her eyes and ignoring him, he isn’t looking at her anyways. he’s too busy searching steve’s eyes for some spark of disapproval. he doesn’t see that though. he sees worry and concern and fear. and that’s when eddie starts warming up to them.

A while ago you said that Jason should've been Batman after Bruce die and i don't remember if you mention about Robin in it. Let's say dc do it, should they make him a new character to be his robin or do you have anyone in mind?

i briefly mentioned it in a post yesterday, but originally when talking about jason becoming batman, my thought process involved bruce either retiring or getting seriously injured (in the latter case jason would take the mantle only temporarily), but now that i think about it the concept of bruce getting fridged for the sake of jason's character development is not only ironic and tragic, but also very funny. uno reverse. especially if they don't get to reconcile before; the angst of it all. the wretched parallel (bruce distorting jay's imagine in grief vs jason aiming to see the best in bruce in mourning; bruce getting considerably more violent at being batman after jay's death vs jay seeking to adjust his ways to understand bruce's ethos better; the tone of the batman comics becoming darker following jason's death vs it becoming what i would call 'aggressively hopeful' when jason takes over the mantle and tries to truly connect with the legacy). and none of it would be easy, the opposite really, a long, painful process. (also in my mind it follows from a secret disastrous storyline in which jason already loses hope in the concept of red hood as well; so his whole sand castle collapses, then bruce dies, and he's left to pick up the pieces).

all of this is different from another secret au in which bruce dies before jason even makes it as red hood and jason gets even more murderous while maybe taking the batman mantle too; identity theft seems to be his go-to coping mechanism.

sorry for such a long tangent... to your question about robin: to be fair, i have not thought about it, as i imagine jason would be rather uncomfortable with having a sidekick. some things to think about:

the *traditional* concept or batman & robin is a bit anachronistic atp. tim, for example, is still robin, but he also made robin uniquely *his* rather than adjacent to batman and bruce (this is of course not the first time this progression happened in the history of comics). damian (and that is not damian slander) doesn't really stand for what the original concept of robin was neither.

i'm not really diminishing the idea "batman needs a robin" though, but i feel like it's taken a bit too much at face value and doesn't take into account the story progression? the important part of this sentiment is that batman should not work alone, since the strict division of what batman means for the people vs what robin means for the people doesn't really apply anymore.

going back to existing robins, i believe jason would continue to work with them, but on their own terms, rather than trying to bring back the "dynamic duo" act. he would be protective, of course, but not more than he is normally; he definitely sees them more as equals, given that he used to hold the title too, and i doubt tim and damian would consider him "their" batman too.

(this is a vastly different situation than it is be with dick btw, who is the oldest and who created the robin mantle and also has more right to see it as his legacy. the subtle difference of "i shared a role and a title with these people" vs "i invented this role and title") tldr i don't think jason feels like he has a right to "have" a robin and for this to be his call.

also, as i already said, i think he would be (at least at first, and i believe for a long time) rather uncomfortable with the idea of having a sidekick. there's definitely a part of him who still appreciates and believes in what robin is a symbol of, but he has a complicated relationship with it, and probably with very idea of kids being in the field in general.

also, jason is young. i know dc keeps de-aging bruce, making him to be younger when he took in dick, but still, rn jason is supposed to be 23 at most (btw personally i don't accept like 90% of bullshit that was supposed to happen in this time, and since tim can be stuck at 17 for no good reason, why can't we also have jay to be younger so that the progession actually makes sense?? probably because it doesn't match the power fantasy middle aged men insert rh persona). i don't reckon he would be enthusiastic about being responsible for a whole child/teenager for a long time.

so i guess my answer is: no robin for jason, no sidekick even, for a long time. unless you give him some eldritch horror of a kid, maybe? that could be fun. but if you have any thoughts of why it should be different, please do share, i'm not ever deadset on my ideas.

also, i (before writing) feel like there are some lines that’re in the script that i can work off of, so there is a good bit of fourth wall breaking. only beej and reader can talk to/ interact with audience.

”the people who live there? i’ve been watching them for a while, and yeah it’s very creepy.” beej monologued. or would it be soliloquyed? soliloqueyed doesn’t sound as good, so let’s go with monologued. “and now, finally, they’re about to die!” beej liked talking to the audience. it made him feel important. you rolled your eyes. “they’re gonna be my new best friends!”

you stepped out of the wings. “and what would that make me?” while beej was more of a musical theatre kind of guy, you were much more of a sitcom kind of guy, so you imagined a camera zoom like in the office.

”i’m this asshole’s best friend, and trust me when i say this, that’s not a position you want.” you addressed the audience.

”oh? what position would you prefer?” beej lowered his voice.

you scoffed, “case and point. you’ll be getting a lot of that in this goddamn show. single men, take notes on what not to do!”

beej frowned.

”barbara, i’m home!” speaking of sitcoms, here comes the loving husband. damn, can’t relate.

beetlejuice turned from you to the audience, “adam and barbara maitland!”

”was there traffic on the bridge?” barbara asked like she actually cared. damn, can’t relate.

”bill hadley on his tractor. i was like, “pick a lane, bill.””

”isn’t this amazing? it’s the last day of their entire lives and this is what they’re talking about.” said beetlejuice.

”beej, take you on a random day and say that’s your last day ever. do you say any impressively insightful shit?” you ask.

”absolutely.” beej grins.

”not.” you finish his sentence. the scene returns to the maitlands before he can say anything else.

i’m sure you’ve seen the show, you know how it goes. maitlands are boring, maitlands sing fast because they have anxiety, maitlands conveniently die at the end of their song, beetlejuice rejoices. whatever, we don’t care about that part. i mean we do, just not right now.

”sometimes, puppet shows are sad.” you say, directed at the small child in the third row. who brings their eight year old to see beetlejuice?

”barbara are you alright?” the moment passed.

you and beetlejuice hide offstage as the maitlands figure out they’re dead. It’s rather annoying, when breathers die. they always have the same reaction. they could spice it up sometimes.

you suppose that’s what beej is here to do. to spice up their reactions.

beetlejuice rings the doorbell. without waiting for either of them to answer, he walks right in. he introduces himself and starts singing. you walk in behind him, arms crossed.

one of the cheerleaders runs past you, knocking into your arm.

”i’m the b to the double e j f q and jesus, i can’t spell.” beetlejuice eyed the maitlands up and down.

the maitlands seemed like nice people. they don’t deserve what was sure to come to them. you stood yourself up from the door frame, and made your way to the center of the room where the trio where.

”let’s all get naked!” beetlejuice screamed.

”no!” the maitlands screamed back. you swung your backhanded fist into his stomach.

”oh!” he let out a guttural noise. “worth a try.” he reasoned.

”what is happening?” barbara asked in a shaky voice, her eyes flashing between the two demons before her. one, who hadn’t spoken a single word, and the other who wouldn’t fucking shut up.

beetlejuice went back to trying to convince them that they should ‘hire’ him. while insulting them, of course, because why wait until a relationship turns unhealthy when you can just start it off that way?

”i’m like a ghost zombie jesus!” god, you needed new friends. maybe you can steal the maitlands away. if you think about it, and you do, it would really only be a win situation from that. you wouldn’t have to deal with beej, you’d get some new friends who would be kind to you. the maitlands wouldn’t even have to think about beetlejuice again, and they would get to hang out with you, and not to toot your horn but you’re pretty damn cool. at first, beetlejuice would lose, with the whole everyone abandoning him thing, but you’re pretty sure that it’s be this time that he changed himself to be a better person.

you hope.

”i think we’re a perfect fit! come on, let’s make out a bit!” you physically pushed beetlejuice away from the maitlands.

beej just gave you an annoyed look, and went back to right next to them, giving them is sales pitch.

you slunk off to the couch. you spread your body across it as if you owned it. adam spared you a curious glance. barbara, soon after.

the four of you made your way off stage, to the attic, as the deetzes and their furniture invaded the house.

”hey beej,” you needed to get beetlejuice away from the maitlands, so you could talk to them, but how? “you better spy on the new homeowners so we know what we’re working with.”

”good idea!” he said.

you grabbed his tie in your hand and pulled him close, “and don’t come back until you know what’ll scare them so hard they wished they’d never been born.” beetlejuice wasn’t very sure of himself, so you’d have a while.

”sir, yes sir!” he ran off like a cartoon character, legs going the full 360.

you turned to the maitlands, eyes flicking between them, trying to decide where to start.

”who are you?” asked adam.

”i’m y/n,” you said, “and i’m a demon, just like beetlejuice.” you grinned like the cheshire cat.

the maitlands shared a concerned glance. “are you going to help us too?” asked barbara.

”well, yes, but not the way you think i am.” you began pacing the floor. “first things first, don’t listen to a word that bastard says. the only things he wants is to be alive, and to get into your pants. the former being more important to him, no offense.”

”so he wants to use us?” asked barbara.

”yes, of course.”

”and how do we know you don’t want to use us either?” she asked.

”good question.” you paused to collect your thoughts, “i suppose you’ll just have to trust me.”

the maitlands exchanged another look. do married people do that often? it was starting to get annoying. well, annoying that they weren’t looking at you like that.

after a moment, adam said, “i don’t think we can fully trust you right now, but hopefully that’ll change.”

”quite the optimist, huh? i envy you.” you said.

how to best gain their trust? probably by being the antithesis of their experience with demons so far.

about an hour later, the trio was still brainstorming a plan. “so, why can’t we just lock him into the netherworld again?” adam asked.

”his mother.” you said.

adam nodded, “right, right. we don’t want to put him through that.”

barbara jumped in, ”and if we leave this place, we’ll be eaten by sandworms, but if we go to the netherworld,”

”you’ll be in that waiting room for the rest of eternity, exactly.” you finished.

you sat in silence for a minute, mulling over your options. so far it was seeming that beetlejuice was going to have to go back to his parent’s house.

”what about sending him out to the sand worms?” asked barbara.

”barbara, you’re a genius!” exclaimed adam.

you imagined what would happen. “i think that’ll work.” you said. “oh! and we can put a protection spell on the house after he’s left! then , no demons will be able to get in.” you pulled out a copy of the handbook for the recently deceased, from seemingly nowhere. beej burned barbara’s copy of the book, but not adam’s.

you placed the book on the floor, and you began looking for the spell with the maitlands looking over your shoulders.

”do you know that a spell like that exists?” asked adam.

”of course i do, i just don’t remember how to do it.” you said.

”and do you know that it won’t expel you from the house too?” asked barbara.

”i guess we’ll find out.” you turned to face her.

”i hope it doesn-” barbara was cut off.

”here it is!” exclaimed adam. “and it doesn’t say anything about expelling demons, just keeping them out.” adam skimmed the instructions.

you turned back to the book, and the group sat in silence as you carefully read it all.

you sat back, “i- we can do this.”

the maitlands high-fived. god, they were adorable.

”the real question is, do you still want the new homeowners out of this place? because if i’m being honest, beej would be better at that than me.” you said.

the maitlands shared a look.

”i-” barbara looked at adam, “i think we should talk about it.”

”oh, of course.” you replied. “do you want me to give y’all some privacy?”

”yes please.” said barbara.

Rocks Fall in the Cape Aokas (Bsjaia): Geological Study Contribution and Reinforcement of the Rocky Slope- Juniper Publishers

Abstract

The Cape Aokas situated in the oriental coastal region of Béjaïa city (Algeria). The cape takes its origin from the babor mountain chain to the Mediterranean Sea along the Aokas city. Its relief is characterized by abrupt slopes. On May 9th, 2005 rocks fall in large mass (20,000 to 30,000m3) from one of the walls constituting the cape, blocked traffic on a busy road (RN° 9) at the entrance of Aokas city. The excavation work of fallen rocks was quickly undertaken by the authorities: 23 days after the rock fall, the road was reopened to traffic. The topometric monitoring was be implemented between April and September 2014 during the summer. The reflection was started to find the best way to strength permanently the rocky slope. In this paper, we present a comparison between the stabilizing system applied to the rocky slope and an optimization proposal in both following cases: without earthquake and under reference earthquake solicitation.

Introduction

A spectacular cliff rock fall occurred on May 9th, 2005 covered the roadway of National Road N° 9 on a about 150m linear (Figure 1), at the entrance to the Aokas town (Figure 2). These rocks fall, preceded by several rocks, have not made a victim. The traffic on this busy road, the only way of communication between neighboring districts: Jijel and Béjaïa (about 20,000 vehicles/day) was completely blocked for three weeks, isolating the Aokas city. The old national road, located 60m beneath the modern one, was completely destroyed and constraining residents to a long detour to join Béjaïa. An important water pipe was also damaged leading to severe restrictions for the population. The rocks fall, which mobilized some 20,000 to 30,000m3 of rock materials was alienated from a fractured limestone cliff at the entrance to a small tunnel that overlooks the city of Aokas (Figure 1). The fallen rocks are fragmented into blocks of any size, with more than 100m3. This paper describes the geological and structural setting of the site and the safety work made (topometric monitoring, passive nailing of the new rock slope).

Geology

Aokas city is bordered in the west by a limestone massif of the Lower Jurassic [1]. These hard limestones, of dark grey color and brown patina form the skeleton of the Mount Imma Tadrart (Figure 3). Most of the outcrops show intense deformations which expressed themselves by fractures more at least closed and papered with calcite and with deposits of iron oxides. A feature of Calcareous breach fairly homogeneous and finely cemented intercalates into this massive limestone. They probably correspond to a weakness area [2]. Locally, coarse colluviums cover the steep slopes of this relief. Along the spur rocky which dominates the sea, and sometimes in alternation with colluvions, we find veneers of gravelly terraces marine origin (Figure 4). The height difference between the roof of these former terraces (Quaternary), and the level of current sea (Figure 4) testify, not of the eustatisme phenomenon, but the shore uplift by recent and very active tectonic movements. For example, the superficial earthquake of Boumerdès engendered a spectacular coast uprising, about 50km linear, esteemed to 75cm near the epicenter, then decreasing gradually to become null in Cape Djinet, approximately 35km on the West of Tigzirt [3].

Tectonic

The calcaro-dolomitic massif of Cape Aokas is affected by a strong deformation due to the Miocene alpine paroxysmal phase [4]. It is crossed by a big vertical fault N010 °E (Figure 3). The fault extension towards the south bounds the massif calcareous and controls its morphology. It is characterized by a thick zone of breaches. Two families of faults were identified. The first one presents a direction N015 °E to N045 °E; it is about faults having replayed into normal faults (Figure 5), at the origin of break mechanisms in the versant of sliding plan type to the northwest [5]. The second family presents a direction N080 °E to N100 °E quasi-parallel to the cliff forehead.

The Figure 6 shows the fracture caused by the tectonic constraints undergone by the rock during its geologic history. They present, generally, the same orientation as the fractures families observed in the Cape Aokas tunnel [2,5,6]. These analyses confirm the existence of three main directions, the first one oriented N015 °E to N055 °E with a dip of 40° to 86° to the northwest and the second is oriented N085 °E to N100 °E with a dip of 60° to 75° northward. The most important fractures are replayed to the faults collapses. The third fracture family is oriented N120 °E to N155 °E with a dip of 44° to 50° to the northeast. The opening spaces and discontinuities are very variable; they contain calcite crystallized and iron oxide deposits [5].

Seismicity of the Aokas Region

Béjaïa province has recorded during these last year’s relatively numbers of high magnitude earthquakes:

a. In March 2006, an earthquake of energy magnitude of 5,0Mw (USGS) has affected the Laâlam region at Kherrata [7], approximately 15km in the southeast of the study area. The earthquake caused the reactivation of the former sliding and the falls of blocks since limestone cliffs at Melbou [8].

b. In November 2012, an earthquake of magnitude Mw of 5,1 (CRAAG) which the epicenter was situated 9km in northeast of Béjaïa city and in 10km of the study area.

c. In May 2013, an earthquake of a magnitude Mw=5, 5 (CRAAG) which the epicenter was situated to 6km east of the study area.

In Aokas area, an earthquake of magnitude (Mw) superior to 5 can thus reactivate or activate diverse ground movements by disturbance of the initial equilibrium conditions. So, a versant with abrupt slope, stable under static conditions can be in imbalance under dynamic solicitation. The best examples are the rock fall and the landslides of Beni Ourtilane in 2000 (Mw=5,6) and Laâlam in 2006 (Mw=5,0) [9]. The seismic activity in Aokas area and the ground movement risks have obliged the authorities to look for a solution to stabilize the rocky slope cleared by the rock fall of May 2005 and to set up a device of measures allowing evaluating the slope deformations, in the wait to the realization of the reassurance works.

Karstification

A Jurassic limestone particularity of Aokas Cape is the presence of natural dissolution cavities. The fairy cave, where the entrance is situated in the tunnel (Figure 7), nearby the place where the rocks have fallen, witnessing the strong aptitude of this training to the karstification.

Description of the Rock Fall

At the west entrance of the Aokas city, the tunnel head is extended by a protection system with the armed concrete, to straight of the conglomeratic slope, susceptible to generate falls of small blocks. The rock fall occurred simultaneously (or with training effect) at the level of two distinct geological formations from the upstream slope of the NR 9:

I. At the level of the calcareous slope (Figures 8 & 9), after removing the collapsed rocks, a net discontinuity in the surface was discovered, corresponding to one of the main rock fracturing plans. This plan (s) (Figure 8), of direction N080 °E to N100 °E quasi-parallel to the NR 9, present a dip downstream of 60° to 75°, completely unfavorable to the rocky slope stability. According to the statistical analysis of the fractures measures and the geologic cup realized along the collapsed slope, a new rock fall of big mass occurring is possible according to the plan F1 (Figure 8) with same mechanism of “sliding plan”.

II. The conglomeratic slope (Figure 9 & 10), situated at the tunnel entrance, presents a relatively low resistance because of a partial cementation and alteration in the surface. His stability state limit is improved by the structure construction of concrete protection armed extending the tunnel. This structure largely destroyed by the calcareous blocks of the rock fall in May 2005. It was intended to protect the road users and resist to the falls impacts of small blocks. The attentive observation of the conglomeratic slope cleared by the rock fall, in the tunnel entrance, shows that it is about a material of karstic cavity filling (Figures 9 & 10). This cavity, of downward flared shape, is extended upward, as high as the former NR 9, by an open and shrunk section, and allowed the accumulation of masses fallen rocks. The presence of marine pudding (pebbles and sands with fossils fragments) which appears near the shore (Figures 4 & 10) and which extended to the karstic cavity basis; show that the latter was opened towards the sea, before its filling. The realized horizontal poll data in the cavity conglomerates show that the latter is of low extension. The visit of the “magic caves” accessible from the former tunnel and approximate location of the big room shows that this one is separated from the collapsed cavity by a thick rocky panel of 20m to 30m. The conglomeratic slope stability after rock fall remains precarious. The important problem at the Short-term is the frequent falls of small blocks, and not a new rock fall.

On April 2014, a rock fall of about 100m3 is occurred in the Cape Aokas calcareous massif at the level of the former career front (Figure 11), upstream the former NR 9 and in 1, 1km to the rock fall area of May 2005. The plan cleared by this rock fall corresponds to stratification plan (PS), of direction included between N050 °E and N060 °E with a downstream dip of 70°. Recently, in February 2015, seven persons were killed, and 20 others injured by a rocks fall near the Cape Aokas tunnel (500m of the head West, Tala Khaled) in Pk 26 of the NR 9 at the East of Béjaïa (Figure 12).

The rocks fall is occurred in outside period of frost after an episode of moderated precipitation between February 14th and February 21st, 2015 (36mm to Béjaïa, Station of Béjaïa- Airport). Since the beginning of 2015, the North of Algeria knew a moderate seismic activity, Especially the Western and the Southern of Algiers. No earthquake of magnitude superior then 3 was registered in the region of Béjaïa.

This spectacular rock fall mobilized about 50m3 to 100m3 rocky materials. According to witnesses, the first phase of rocks fall corresponded to the detachment of two dihedral unitarian volume esteemed between 3 and 5 m3 from a rocky bar, at a height of 160m of the current road (Figure 13). These two dihedrals have provoked the fall and the other blocks detachment of different volumes in the versant unstable equilibrium. The observations and the made measures show that both collapsed compartments were bounded by three plans. The first two correspond to both fractures families (F1 and F3) and the third plan corresponds to the stratification plan, a direction between N050 °E and N060 °E with an unfavorable downstream dip of 70°.

Topometric Mnitoring of the Rock Fall Scar

Since May 2005, the both calcareous and conglomerate slopes did not present a noteworthy instability. After the rock fall of April 2014 in the same massif, six topographic marks for the realization of infrared geodesic measures were set up on the potentially unstable compartments at the level of the rock fall scar of May 2005. The measures results of the totals displacements between April and September 2014 in six marks are represented on the graphs of the Figure 14 below.

From totals results of displacements made during a period of six months, we notice that:

i. Until June 2014, the measures displacements remained lower than 2mm.

ii. During the summer period, characterized by an important tourist activity and very dense road traffic on the NR9, the displacements measures varied between 0, 5mm and 2, 3mm.

iii. Since the beginning of august, 2014, no deformation was recorded.

The total displacements measured remained lower than 2, 5mm, thus lower to the uncertainty of measure.

During the same period, some compartments localized in the downstream slope, the visual observations highlighted an opening of fractures. This movement of the millimeter-length order (lower than 10mm) occurred at the level of two fractures plans oriented N080 °E to N090 °E with a downstream dip of 65°.

Geotechnical Characteristics

γh: Volume weight (Natural water content).

wn: Natural water content.

Sr: Degree of saturation.

Rc: Simple compression resistance.

Is50: Compression resistance index between points for a distance inter-points equals in 50mm (Franklin test).

E: Module of Young.

Rtb: Indirect traction resistance (Brazilian test).

RQD: Rock Quality Designation.

The laboratory testing results realized during the doubling works of Cape Aokas tunnel on samples taken in a horizontal poll realized near the rocks fall of May 2005 are summarized in the following Table 1:

We notice that:

a. The compression resistance values are relatively lower with regard to Franklin index with a report Rc/Is50 of the order of 9 while this report is usually between 20 to 30.

b. The Young module values are relatively low compared with compression resistance values with a report E / Rc of the 142 order while this report is usually of about 250-750 order for this rock type.

c. The average RQD values vary from 21% to 78%, with a bad massif quality until 5m of depth and good one beyond 5m of depth.

In synthesis, the matrix is weakly resistant and is averagely stiff. It is characterized of a porous limestone (presenting an order of 10 % total porosity). It is indeed possible that in the proximity of the major vertical fault of direction N010 °E met at the oriental border level of the rocks fall, limestone is transformed to dolomite during an intense activity period (Dolomitisation of replacement and recrystallising having been able to destroy the limestone original texture), then by time (at the origin of dissolution phenomena in the mass and thus micropores).

Strengthening of the Rocky Slope

The nailing solution of the rocky slope by passive anchoring was retained with a sizing to the limit balance for the following hypotheses:

I. The absence of cohesion and water pressure along the potential sliding plan,

II. The seismic zoning established by the Earthquakeresistant Genius Center (CGS, on 1999) modified and completed further to Boumerdès earthquake in 2003, class the Aokas region in average seismicity area (area II a). For the justification in pseudo-statics of an important vital structure from the view safety point, the horizontal acceleration coefficient of the reference earthquake to be taken into account is equal in: σH=0, 25. The vertical acceleration coefficient σV is equal to the third of the coefficient σH,

III. The anchoring steel working rate is limited in the middle of the elastic limit under static solicitation (except earthquake) and to the elastic limit under seismic solicitation,

IV. The sealing length beyond the potential sliding plan is the maximal value between the value deducted from traction test on nail (allowing reaching the unitarian side friction noted qs) and a fixed value equals 70 times the diameter of the anchoring steel bars.

Consider the hypotheses exposed above and those exposed on the schematic (Figure 15) and in the Table 2 below, the rocky slope safety factor towards the sliding plan, noted Cs, can be calculated in the equilibrium limit according to the following relations:

a) Slope not strengthened except seismic solicitation:

System of a Realized Reinforcement

The realized strengthening System is consisted of steel bars with an equal diameter of 20mm and elastic limit equal to 950MPa, setting place in drillings of an equal diameter of 90mm and tilted by 20° with regard to the horizontal, with an average square stitch of 0, 71m x 0, 71m (Figure 16). The length of sealed bars at the back of potential sliding plan (F1) (Figure 8) is fixed to 6m on the other hand the total length of bars is determined according to their position in the slope. It varies between 8 m and 11, 5m (Figure 17).

The reinforcement, thus validated by the contracting authority, is widely oversized with safety factors equal in:

a) 3,4 without earthquake,

b) And at 5, 1 under reference earthquake.

The reinforcement rests on small diameter bars (without consideration the reduction bound to the corrosion), in steel very stiff and according to a small dimensions square stitch, induced an intense cutting of the rock massif. The remainder of article presents a possible optimization of the nailing.

Proposal Optimization of the Sizing

The dimensioned situation is the one without earthquake with the same data used previously. The safety factor aimed after strengthening is Fs=1, 3.

The bars implementation an equal diameter of 50mm (with a reduction of 8mm in diameter among 100 years due to the corrosion) and of elastic limit equal to 500MPa, with an average square stitch of 2,04m x 2,04m, allows to result in equal safety coefficient in:

a. 1,3 without earthquake,

b. And in 1,6 under reference earthquake.

The length of sealed bars in the back of the potential plan sliding (F1) (Figure 8) will be at least 3, 5m at the back of the unstable potentially plan (F1). The bars total length is determined according to their position in the slope. It is between 5m and 9m (Figure 18).

Results and Discussion

The rock fall of Cap Aokas (May 2005) on the west side of the current RN9 tunnel is occurred following a fracture oriented N087° to N090°. The released plan by the rock fall shows continuity over several m2, a regularity of its surface that is smooth enough and may distorted. It presents a precarious stability. The obtained safety coefficients in both situations (excluding earthquake and under reference earthquake) show that the realized retaining system is oversized (steel bars with a diameter of 20mm, yield stress equal to 950MPa, drilling with a diameter of 90mm and inclined at 20° relative to the horizontal, average square mesh of 0.71m x 0.71m and a length of the bars sealed behind the potential sliding plane set at 6m), we wonder if its size is not excessive. However, the mesh of small dimensions, can induce intense cutting of the rock mass under the reference earthquake. The optimization of the design shows that the proposed retaining system ensures the stability of the slope in both situations excluding earthquake and under reference earthquake

Conclusion

In the study term of the reinforcement project of the rock fall scar of May 2005, the various aspects (geology, fracturing of the massif, the seismicity and geotechnical) allowed us to end in a detailed analysis of the slope stability. Small diameter bars (without consideration of a possible reduction bound to the corrosion in marine environment), very stiff steel and a small square stitch (induce an intense cutting of rock massif). The reinforced slope will have to be considered as a sensitive structure and be the specific surveillance object by the contracting authority (Periodic inspections, follow-up by infrared geodesic measures). This new rock falls put in evidence the necessity of detailed diagnosis towards the rocky risk on the threatened whole section of the NR9, on a linear about 1, 2km. A particular attention will have to be given to the strengthening sizing by passive nailing of the unstable rocky slope in the Melbou ledge after the completion works of the NR43 extension (Figure 19), situated in approximately 15km east of Aokas area.

How I’d do Naruto Next Gen

okok I’ve been wanting to do something more in depth and organised than my usual ranting about how everything is terrible now, so here we go! (though lbr this is just my usual ranting but 10x longer)

for the sake of brevity ha and my own piece of mind I’m not gonna go into how unnecessarily hetro the ending was and how everyone should’ve been gay and hey not every couple absolutely had to get married and/or have kids and also nart should’ve gotten the opportunity to realise that becoming hokage wasn’t necessary to achieve his real goal of becoming someone loved and accepted by others and he deserved so much better tbh and why isn’t sak just running the whole show and why isn’t there more sand sibs, bc let’s face it none of that was ever gonna happen, so these ideas are mostly built with the premise that all the canon couples stay canon and all the kids are still around and the product of those ships and the big plot things that happened (like nart becoming hokage and the like) stay roughly the same

forewarning bc else someone’s bound to say something; if you enjoy the next gen stuff? not a problem! that’s great, people enjoying stuff is a good thing! I wish I could enjoy more stuff, bc enjoying things is far more fun than not enjoying things! everyone has a different taste though and for me – and a lot of other people – the way that the next gen has turned out has been a disappointment, this post is for those people, so we can talk about why we think it’s failed and what we would’ve like to see instead, if you don’t feel that way about it.. well just scroll on past this post and keep enjoying the things you enjoy! have an absolute blast, you’ve earned it!

under the cut bc I am apparently incapable of keeping my rambling concise, there’s 2000 words of only vaguely coherent thoughts and tangents, so maybe get yourself a cuppa and a snack before trudging through it (some of this I’ve said in other posts before but w/e)

first off lets change some of the kids’ personalities, there’s nothing intrinsically wrong with any of them, but like….. 90% are carbon copies of one of their parents (and mostly their dads but I won’t get into that issue rn) which is ridiculous, bc personality traits aren’t genetic?? like my mum is super chill and sensible and my dad is short-tempered, but I’m an anxious mess and my bro is an anti-social control freak.. we didn’t get any of that from either of our parents

while it’s certainly true that you might be influenced by them (me and mum share a lot of interests and tastes), it’s not a hard and fast rule and I don’t find it realistic that EVERY kid takes after their parents, though I probably wouldn’t have such a problem with it if they were more a mix of both parents than just their dads, so here’s some potential alterations:

Boruto. good fucking lord, no, we did not need a clone of Naruto heading another series, if we wanted to see a rambunctious scamp who gets into trouble but loves his friends a whole lot and has a knack for giving inspirational speeches, then there’s already a whole 700 chap manga for that! one with a far more likable and interesting rambunctious scamp tbqh. so how about we make a few alterations, maybe instead of taking after Nart, Bolt takes a bit more after Hinata? a little quiet and a bit of a pushover, but someone who’ll quickly stick up for a friend and has an ease of communication that’s a bit more Nart? not shy so much as laidback and composed, maybe he isn’t all that interested in being a ninja too, like he’s quite skilled but is a pacifist and would much rather get a civilian job as idk a baker or gardener or something

Shikadai. only a few minor changes here bc I really do like the kid as he is, I’d just like to see him using Tema’s abilities too (and maybe also being just a bit more snarky and unyielding like his mum)

Inojin. I’m kinda torn on this one, bc I do like that he’s a lot like Sai (at least in the anime, he seems to have a pretty different personality from what little we’ve seen of him in the manga???), but I think it’d be pretty interesting if he was just not like either of his parents, maybe if he was very quiet and subdued, but also the mastermind behind all the kid’s pranks, has a mischievous streak that often shocks people, but his friends always love hanging out with him bc of it. also why doesn’t he have Ino’s powers? let’s give him Ino’s powers too

Sand Kids 2.0. ok so at this point we haven’t seen nearly enough of them to say much either way but I have negative faith in kishi and ike so I’ll just say that I want them all to be Gaara’s adopted kids (since it’s still unclear if it’s just Shinki or all of ‘em atm) and I want them to be exactly like this shameless plug for me and @spellfire01‘s versions of them which are the best fucking versions and I will protect my children with my life

now some changes to the original cast (this is where I’m gonna get proper bitter, prepare yourselves):

OH NARUTO MY POOR CHILD WHAT HAVE THEY DONE TO YOU I’ve already talked about this but let me just reiterate in as eloquent a way as I can; Naruto would never become a neglectful father. N e v e r. not after the childhood he went through, no matter how much work he had to do as kage, don’t dare fucking try and tell me that Naruto – "It's almost unbearable, isn't it… the pain of being all alone. I know that feeling; I've been there, in that dark and lonely place, but now there are others, other people who mean a lot to me. I care more about them than I do myself, and I won't let anyone hurt them… They rescued me from my loneliness" – Uzumaki would EVER neglect his kids. just fucking don’t. in this version Nart is a doting and involved dad (perhaps a little too much, to the point that his kids find him kinda exhausting and have to ask him to leave them alone sometimes) who sends his clones to work at the office while he hangs out with his family.. I honestly don’t know why he doesn’t already do that

let all the girls out of their houses to do some ninja work for the love of god

poor put-upon Shino-sensei is alright.. but we’ve already had that with Iruka, I’d honestly much rather see the Cool Sensei who keeps all the kids in line without even doing much of anything and has a knack for inspiring them and always has a line of students trailing after him asking to hear more of his awesome ninja stories and everyone always trying to show off when he’s around, bc Shino is literally The Best

have Sauce and Saku be divorcees. seriously, are even the people who ship them happy with how their relationship has turned out? they barely see each other and apparently it’s been that way since chap 699, so why not just have them split up? it really wouldn’t change much, just say that, at some point after Sarada was born, they realised that they were both gay incompatible personality-wise and they were both so busy with their individual work that there wasn’t much of a relationship to lose. not only would this be good for both their characters (there’s no reason they couldn’t still be good friends) and just more sensible all-round, but it would also be a nice way to show that not every childhood romance/first love works out and that’s perfectly fine and normal and they can still live happy, full lives afterwards!

speaking of Sauce, let him spend at least a little bit of time interacting with his friends and family in Konoha, even if he’s still mostly travelling around on important missions he should at least be taking every opportunity to visit his daughter when he’s in the area, seriously, c’mon

Temari got done so dirty in that one episode.. here’re some much better words than I could ever muster but generally I’d want her to be less the ‘scary, overbearing, harsh’ mother and more the ‘strict but cool and sneaky’ mother, like she’d honestly be the type to use reverse psychology and gentle manipulation, she’d make her boy do some seemingly meaningless task that somehow makes him have an epiphany and come back to her when he’s done like “I know what I did wrong now and I’m sorry” than just shout at him and refuse to make dinner (also I just really like to hc that she’s a terrible cook so it’s Shikamaru who does all the cooking anyway)

it’d be really great to see Hina either being the new clan head or at least otherwise involved in Hyuuga clan politics, so we could actually see how she’s working to destroy that whole slavery thing they’ve got going, rather than that plotline just being dropped somewhere around the end of the chunin exam arc and never picked up again (I mean I assume that it’s all supposed to be fixed by now, but that’s not the kinda thing that should happen entirely off-screen) and so we can see her life revolving around something other than Nart and her kids, she’s remarkably capable and had so much potential but she’s been denied every opportunity to really exist as her own character by the writers

Kiba…… what the hell is going on with Kiba? where is he? what is he doing? how’s he feeling these days? is he supposed to be married to that nameless cat lady we saw for a single panel? these are things we shall never know I guess. tbh what I’d really LOVE to see would be Kiba-sensei, just imagine him and Shino both being teachers who work in completely opposite ways, Shino is the quiet, inspiring, lowkey scary one and Kiba is the gigantic fucking dork one who cheers his students on way too loud and makes the classes super fun and joins in the kids games, him and Shino have a class rivalry and Kiba is constantly roping students into joining his attempts to prank Shino (they’ve never once succeeded but oNE DAY)

Ino should be the next head of Konoha’s intelligence division, I will fight kishi on this one

why the actual fuck is oroch still happily living it up in his penthouse lab?? kill the fucker. or at the very least imprison the fucker. just say that Mitsuki was an old project of his that somehow kept developing in his absence, or was a product of research carried out by some lackeys’ years after he’s gone, anything that means I don’t have to accept that everyone has apparently forgiven him for everything and knows that he’s still experimenting on kids but just don’t care

right now let’s get onto the actual plot/story for this very self-pandering au

make Sarada the main char. while I can see why they would choose to go with Boruto, honestly Salad’s more interesting a character and! A Girl!! Main Character!!!! I NEED IT!!!!!! focus on her goal to be hokage and her struggles with her parents and follow up on that ‘restoring the Uchiha’ plot thread that just.. dropped right off the map somewhere between 699 and 700, her reconciling what her clan was with what she wants to make it

get rid of that weird demon-sensing eye thing that’s going on. and the demon thing in general. and also that jarring post-apocalypse future thing they’re building up. I didn’t slog through over a decade of kishi’s bullshit just so my kids didn’t get to live long, happy lives. make the plot just slice-of-life fluff, nothing more dangerous than a bully, just some kids trying to be awesome ninja in a world that doesn’t really need ninja anymore bc peace and all that

waaay more of Chocho, Himawari and Inojin (at least enough so they all get equal billing)

show how the ninja world has grown and developed since the end of the original series (not just technologically), what do ninja do now that there aren’t any wars and international relationships are at an all-time high? have missions completely gone from being combat and intel based to more about construction and assistance? are ninja numbers actually dropping, favouring civilian jobs in these more peaceful times? how well are people – ninja or not – adjusting to these changes? is learning ninja techniques still encouraged but in a way that’s more about culture and traditions than actual use in combat (in the same way that swordplay today is mostly practiced for performance, fun and sport, rather than out of any real-life practicality)? there are so many interesting things to explore that you don’t even need to be adding in new threats to keep the series entertaining

I’ve said this before, but I think it’d be really cool and cute if after the end of the war and with some drastic changes to the ninja world’s politics, this next gen is less about becoming ninja, than realising that they’ll never be ninja (at least not in the way that their parents were) and how they react to that. maybe they’re frustrated because they hear so many cool stories about the grand battles of the previous generation and they want to be able to do those things too damnit! so the kids are just going around trying to be super-awesome ninja in a world that doesn’t really need ninja anymore, picking fights and trying to make their boring d-rank missions seem more important and dangerous than they really are, maybe at some point they learn a bit more about how hard and traumatising that life was for their parents and why the world had to change, until they eventually decide that if the role of a ninja has to change, then together they’re gonna discover what that new role will be, what will being a ninja really mean in this new, peaceful world?

and, a final ending note: fuck ike’s sickening treatment of Sarada with regards to her sexualised presentation and the disgusting reveal that someone taught Boruto (a young child!) the sexy jutsu. Let The Kids Be Kids 2k17
