[“I want to spend a moment reflecting on exploitation: I’ve been eyed for social work since I was in my mid-teens. A racialized, mentally ill, gender queer youth, I was also remarkably articulate, psychologically precocious, eager to help and to please. The adult service providers whose orbit I floated in were quick to notice and take a shine to me—I was one of those once-in-a-blue-moon clients, the kind it feels both easy and rewarding to work with because I was so traumatized yet seemed to “improve” so quickly. The adults I trusted always seemed to want me in their empowerment initiatives, they were eager to put me on youth councils and committees, they gave me leadership roles despite the fact that I was in way over my head. I was brilliant and gifted, they said. I had so much to offer, they said. Helping was what I was made for.
I came to identify my worth with helping, my lovableness with how much I was able to give and please. It didn’t matter that most of my early jobs and roles involved some significant risks—for example, facilitating antihomophobia workshops in high schools as a high school student myself might have required a rather enormous amount of self-disclosure and vulnerability to strangers, but it was all for the cause, wasn’t it? And how proud my youth workers were whenever I came back from another successful outing. And if the honorariums they paid me were less than minimum wage, well, it was more money than I’d ever made before, wasn’t it? And how lucky was I to get paid to do something that did so much good for other people?
When I got to college age, I knew it was my purpose in life to help and heal other people. In my darker moments, it sort of seemed like that was all I was good for—and all the trusted adults, the wise youth workers and therapists and psychiatrists who mentored me, said I was gifted. They said I was special. My diversity made me fashionable. So “interesting” and “textured,” one psychotherapy supervisor called me. A wealthy white psychologist said I was an “ambassador for my people.” (She didn’t specify which people.) This was how, at twenty-two years old, I began an internship that involved doing therapy with adults who had survived childhood sexual trauma. Although I had no real clinical training, I held sessions for them at night in the windowless basement of a hospital in Montreal. I learned therapy techniques quickly, from videos on the internet and by practising on the job. People were counting me. I had to help.
Some quick number-crunching tells me that I gave over 4,000 hours of unpaid therapy in order to get to paid work as a clinician. By contrast, the very first sex work gig I got paid me $100 for some nude cuddling and a sloppy hand job that I completed in twenty minutes. I almost never think about that first gig now. I still dream about the stories my clients told me in that first unpaid therapy internship I took at twenty-two. Occasionally, I still cry, wondering how they are now, if I’d done enough to help them.
My social work experience isn’t every social worker’s experience, so I can’t claim to speak for the whole social work community. What I can say is that the people around me saw something useful and beautiful that they liked in me, so they took it and used it and I allowed it to happen because I wanted to feel loved and I didn’t think I really had choices. What I can say is that my sex work practice started out rough and frightening, but it blossomed into a decent learning experience and a business that paid me lots of cash up front, usually with no strings attached.”]
kai cheng thom, do you feel empowered in your job? and other questions therapists ask sex workers, from The Care We Dream Of: Liberatory & Transformative Justice Approaches to LGBTQ+ Health, edited by Zena Sharman, 2021

David Cronenberg's Scanners (1981) has a sequence taking place in a mentally ill (and telepathic) artist's exhibition and workshop, where he processes his demons in the form of his surreal and eerie sculptures.
These sculptures were by Tom Coulter, a Montreal artist whose work Cronenberg took a shine to as he felt it was in line with the themes of his own films. I'm assuming Coulter must have also did the more traditional artworks seen briefly here as well. Sadly I can't find examples of Coulter's work online as of now. Coulter would work on later horror films such as Videodrome and Parents (1989).

Any headcanons about how many homes America and Canada have?
Yes! They have many homes.
⭐ America ⭐
In New York City, America spent decades jumping from place to place. As the city grew, he moved from a house in Manhattan, to a Brooklyn apartment, to a flat in Queens, etc. Now, despite his best efforts, his current apartment is just a box with an AC unit sticking out the window. He wishes he could have a nicer place in NYC, but the market is too hot even for him.
In Los Angeles, he managed to snag a gorgeous Santa Monica house in the early Hollywood days before prices exploded into the stratosphere. Just a short walk to the Pacific ocean, he never sold it and it’s worth its weight in gold by now.
His spot in Washington D.C. is the one he most uses; a stately, historical home that would probably be turned into a small museum if he ever decides to sell it (but he never will). Sometimes, the place can get a bit messy, with papers, file folders, and take-out containers scattered about, but he’ll tidy up when company is coming.
A farm in Ohio that has seen better days. In the early 20th century, he used the barn as a workshop to tinker with automobiles and flying machines. As a result, the barn is quite damaged, but America won’t repair it. He thinks the oil stains “add character”.
A lively hotel in Louisiana with a restaurant on the first floor. Yes, he owns the whole thing. It’s been managed by humans for generations within the same family. They cook massive Creole feasts whenever America drops by.
America doesn’t seek solitude often, but when he does, he goes to his mountain home in Colorado.
He stubbornly hangs onto his Texas ranch even though he doesn't raise cattle anymore.
Once he owned a beachfront property in Florida, but sold it after the Cuban Missile Crisis.
Unfortunately, through no fault of his own, his childhood home in Boston caught fire after the Revolution and burnt down. The land it was on is now a popular public park with swing sets, monkey bars, and a huge curly slide. Many local children say it’s their favourite park in the city.
There are many more, of course, but those are some of his standout homes.
🍁 Canada 🍁
Of all his homes, Canada stays at his Ottawa house most often. The backyard is filled with a rainbow of tulips and it’s within cycling distance to Parliament Hill. He keeps several pairs of ice skates for himself and whoever visits during the winter, so they can go skating over the frozen Rideau Canal.
Canada’s Toronto flat is the most modern-looking of his dwellings, but that isn’t saying much. It’s an industrial loft with mismatched furniture still stuck in the 1980s. It really isn’t his favourite place, but he likes the view of the skyline at sunset.
One of his childhood homes is still standing; a humble, stonework Montreal house. It’s been restored by historical societies; fresh paint on the door, a tidy lawn, and black soot swept away. He made an arrangement to lease it as a museum, but has the opportunity to return and stay there whenever he chooses.
There’s a ramshackle log cabin he built himself in Algonquin park, many years before it was designated as parkland. To quote my NedCan fic: “... a stone base decorated in moss. Turn-of-the-century windows and an amber-stained porch pleasantly frame the main door, while the modernized roof and chimney stack create a mishmash of different eras... like a favourite worn blanket; too beloved to be discarded, and so instead is repeatedly patched.”
On the east coast, he has a home in Halifax proper. Sadly, his original was destroyed in the Halifax Explosion and was rebuilt to the standards of the 1920s. He misses his older house, because it was where Scotland would visit during his childhood.
In St. John’s, he has a very colourful building, painted bright red with white window frames and small gardens in both the front and back.
A simple, suburban bungalow in Red Deer, Alberta. Perfect for business and relaxation, because it’s halfway between both Edmonton and Calgary and keeps the Rocky Mountains within reach. Piles of hiking gear are stored in the attic, basement, and the garage. When he can spare the time, he’ll drive out to the Rockies for weeks of camping, climbing, hiking, or skiing.
His British Columbia home is surrounded by old-growth trees.
Overall, Canada tries to have at least one home in each of his provinces and territories. If, at the time of travel, he doesn’t, he'll try to lodge in a wildlife research centre. The scientists, who usually work for the government, don’t mind his presence at all.
Thank you for the ask!! 💜

Under the theme "From Darkness to Light," the 32nd Black History Month aims this year to highlight the richness and diversity of Quebec's Black communities, as well as to create moments of exchange and reflection among the population.
From Feb. 1 to 28, the Black History Month Roundtable will hold various cultural, educational, social and historical events to promote and celebrate the contribution of Afro-descendants to Quebec society.
At a press conference held Wednesday morning in Montreal, the organizers presented the program of activities, which will take place in several cities in the province.
Throughout the month, the public will be able to attend conferences, workshops as well as film screenings, in addition to wearing the green heart with a black stripe, a symbol of participation in the festivities. [...]
"In the course of the pandemic, we realized the enormous contribution of Afro people, and more specifically Black women ... especially in the hospital environment, as orderlies, nurses or doctors. These are all profiles that allowed us to understand the importance of the contribution of Black people in Quebec," said Schelby Jean-Baptiste.
In Canada, Black women workers are mainly in the health care and social assistance sector, according to Statistics Canada data from 2021. One-third of Black women are employed in this sector, compared to 22.5 per cent of the rest of the female population. For Black immigrant women, this proportion climbs to nearly 38 per cent. [...]

Sex worker wins in Nova Scotia court but ruling leaves sex industry conflicted
In a legal decision described as the first of its kind in Canada, a Halifax sex worker successfully sued a client for nonpayment of services, but actors in the industry are conflicted about the ruling's impacts.
Former sex worker Brogan Sheehan took Bradley Samuelson to small claims court after he didn't fully pay her fee, which both parties had agreed to beforehand. Samuelson argued that the agreement was invalid because it is illegal to purchase sexual services, but court adjudicator Darrel Pink said the contract could still be enforced and awarded Sheehan $1,800.
Sex work remains criminalized in Canada, but a 2014 law removed criminal penalties for people, like Sheehan, who sell sexual services. Paying for sex, however, remains illegal.
Sheehan's lawyer, Jessica Rose, says she and her client wanted to expose the court to the "economic realities of doing sex work." As well, Rose said they wanted to raise awareness about "what is needed as far as access to the civil justice system to ensure sex workers are treated fairly by their clients."
"This type of issue had never been addressed before in court," Rose said in a recent interview.
Emma Halpern, executive director of the Elizabeth Fry Society of Mainland Nova Scotia, says the decision empowers sex workers to seek legal remedies to enforce their contracts.
The decision also reflects a changing attitude within society and the law toward sex work, Halpern said. The public is beginning to understand the difference between "extremely harmful, predatory things like sex trafficking, and legitimate sex work by an adult who is a worker, pays taxes, has a business."
As a response to the ruling, Halpern and Sheehan said they planned to hold workshops for sex workers to help them understand their legal rights.
But not everyone in the sex industry sees the court's decision as a step forward. Real change will occur once politicians decriminalize sex work, said Sandra Wesley, executive director of Stella, a Montreal-based organization by and for sex workers.
The vast majority of sex workers, she said, won't seek financial recourse via the court system because sex work is still criminalized in Canada. Going to court exposes a sex worker -- and potentially everyone else she is associated with -- to the justice system, Wesley said.
"Even if there's a chance she can win, there's always a risk of workplaces being shut down, police being alerted to the activity, being evicted, deported," she said. "There are many consequences of being criminalized, even if we win in court."
Wesley says the small claims court decision actually goes against the 2014 federal sex work law, called the Protection of Communities and Exploited Persons Act. That law emphasizes the importance of discouraging sex work and denouncing and prohibiting the purchase of sexual services "because it creates a demand for prostitution."
Wesley says, "I hope the minister of justice and prime minister read the decision, read the law, and consider it's time to change it."
And while Pink's decision says that both sides in the court case believe it is the first of its kind in Canada, a legal expert questions its importance on jurisprudence because the ruling was rendered in small claims court.
"The usual court hierarchy doesn't apply," said Wayne MacKay, professor emeritus at Dalhousie University's law school. "Another small claims judge wouldn't necessarily have to follow it, nor a higher court."
And while the decision doesn't have a binding precedent, it could still influence other court rulings, he said.
"The message is out there," MacKay said. "Sex work is work, legal work, and deserves to be treated like other legal work, and if people chose not to pay, they can get a remedy in small claims court."
According to documents filed in Nova Scotia's small claims court, Sheehan charged $300 an hour for her services, and spent seven hours with Samuelson on Jan. 26, 2022. But the next morning, when she attempted to take cash out of an ATM with his bank card, the transaction was denied. After several text exchanges, Samuelson eventually paid Sheehan $300, leaving $1,800 outstanding.
Pink's decision, rendered in April, says public policy requires the courts "not to increase or contribute to exploitation of sex work, and thus favours a regime that gives aggrieved sex workers access to the civil courts when they have a civil claim."
MacKay said the broader social impact of the novel decision may be more important than the technical, legal impact.
"One has to kind of admire the sex worker that decided to test the waters, see what small claims court would do, and succeeded," he said. "That's the way things change sometimes."
Sheehan, who advocates for the decriminalization of sex work, said she wanted to pursue the case in court because she was a victim of human trafficking when she was a minor.
"I feel obligated to not leave things the way that they were," she said.

What they don't know is I've got a card holder packed with fingerprints cloned with Scotch tape, my Flipper Zero and something that at least approaches workable charisma, despite my limp. I couldn't outrun the guards to save my life, but most of them probably haven't been able to entertain a good conversation in a long while. I should know - night shifts are particularly gruelling. Schmoozing my way free shouldn't be too difficult.
Now, then - to steal someone's car, find something to help me reach the gas and brake pedals and drive back to Montreal without the sight of a wrinkly, bat-eared and child-sized Transgenic abomination freaking the hoi polloi into calling the constabulary...
Did I mention I can't drive? This shouldn't be too hard - all I need is to obey turn signals, keep straight and make sure that my complete lack of respect for human adulthood doesn't show through my pint-sized, grotesque, if occasionally debonair Self. As for finding my way back, well - every guard conveniently has a GPS-enabled cell phone, which I can use once I've acquired a burner SIM card from, oh - practically any drugstore that also packs personal electronics...
Don't ask, this is Quebec. There's a ton of those here; I could buy myself a mid-range laptop while stocking on snacks for the road and First Aid essentials! Add a gun and some rounds to the mix and you'd swear I'm down past State lines!
What's that you say - traced purchases? Oh, please. Take a good look at me and tell me anyone would believe a teenaged cashier saying an unfailingly polite Hellspawn with an adorable little cardigan vest walked out of a Jean Coutu pharmacy with an entry-level ASUS laptop, a pack of Chips Ahoy, some ibuprofen and some gauze. They'd sooner ask the kid at which chapter of the SDQC he first stopped...
Hm. Food for thought - stock up on edibles. Not for myself, but to plant on any credible enjoyers of fine greenery that may or may not serve as accessories to my escape.
As for Walt and Sarah? They've both known for a while, now, but I'm confident the hallucinogenics I workshopped at the lab should keep most of everyone else in the Gay Quarter from seeing me as anything other than Dan, Boilerplate Human Non-Extraordinaire. A little fluoride, a little lab-produced mezcal derivative with designer nootropic compounds designed to trigger and sustain specific character-based hallucinations - you might as well say I'm doing the city's dentists a favor!
Aaah, this is the life, ladies and gents - wailing sirens from befuddled rent-a-cops trailing behind me, my stolen shortwave CB radio sputtering tales of generalized scientific hubris and institutional incompetence, the countryside's smell of potato shacks and dung heaps simmering in the dregs of the early summer heat...
Oh, and the invariable tales that'll crop up on r/nosleep, too. I always end up as someone's perfect image for a sleep paralysis demon, somehow... Go figure, eh?
Once more around the maypole for this freak of Science and Godless Nature combined - how exciting!

Noella - track 5 on Manic Pixie Dream World bts writeup (sorry this really isn't Snazzy content but I know some of you find it interesting)
I wrote this around the same time as Manic Pixie Dream Boy, early in the pandemic. Just doing some improv on the piano until my right hand settled on the guitar melody and the left on the chords. At the time Stef and I were working on a little web series about a wannabe influencer and his mysterious artiste girlfriend Noella.
The song was going to be a cringy rap song he wrote for her in the first episode with constant references to youtubers.
The song really slapped though and after workshopping it a little with friends and I think some folks in the of Montreal discord I extended it out to be longer than two minutes and built it up with additional percussion.
In the end I decided to keep it as a love song to Noella, but it's also a fictionalized love song for Stef.
This is where the pandemic becomes relevant. Stripped of most of the web series context it really is a song about locking down with someone you love and fearing that they'll get sick of you.
I hope you are enjoying the new album, it's so dreamy to see so many vibing with it 💖💖💖

Wrecking Ball — VoicePlay music video
youtube
The first featured guest from another group on The Sing-Off was a founding member of high school group Vocal Rush. This arrangement and the way Sarah sings it gives me a sense of a young woman struggling to allow herself to express intense feelings in a society that tells her she shouldn't. Her balance between vulnerability and control is beautifully supported by the men around her.
Details:
title: Wrecking Ball (feat. Sarah Vela)
original performer: Miley Cyrus [NOTE: The original video is fairly NSFW, as Miss Miley gets tastefully naked.]
written by: Maureen "Mozella" McDonald, Stephan Moccio, Wallace "Sacha" Skarbek, David "Kiyanu" Kim, Lukasz "Dr. Luke" Gottwald, & Henry "Cirkut" Walter
arranged by: Geoff Castellucci, Layne Stein, & Hannah Juliano
release date: 11 December 2013
My favorite bits:
starting with just Sarah's voice accompanied by the guys picking up the body percussion rhythm that Layne then takes over with his beatboxing
the slow build of the harmonies from simple phonations to lyrics
riffs on riffs from Sarah, Eli, Earl, and Tony
Geoff's slides under the second chorus
Sarah's adorable 👋 "Hi, Mom!" in the outro, reminding us that she was still in high school at the time of recording
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
Trivia:
They got to perform this song live when VoicePlay and Vocal Rush were reunited at the 2014 Napa Valley A Cappella Extravaganza.
After Sarah graduated from the Oakland School for the Arts, she studied songwriting and music production at Berklee College of Music, then returned to take over the directorship of Vocal Rush in the summer of 2020 when her predecessor retired.
Choreographer Tyger-B used this track for a very cool hip-hop choreo workshop at the 2014 iDance Convention in Montreal.

National Coquilles Saint Jacques Day is celebrated every year on May 16 to honor ‘the Shell of St. James,’ another name for the popular seafood scallops. In France, the coquille is a certain species of scallop and, for this particular dish, only the coquille can be used. It is made with a mixture of butter, cream, mushrooms, and cheese. But don’t worry, in other regions that where the coquille cannot be found, people can use any variety of scallop and cook them in a wide range of ways.
History of National Coquilles Saint Jacques Day
National Coquilles Saint Jacques Day is a rather unusual holiday and, while the origin remains a mystery, it does have a rich history.
It’s believed that the scallop shell is a symbol of St. James, who was one of Jesus’ twelve Apostles. There are legends who suggest that the scallop shell served as water and food bowls for pilgrims during their journey to Santiago de Compostela. The carved shell of a scallop can be found on the front of houses used by pilgrims at stopover points.
‘Coquilles Saint Jacques’ are scallops cooked in a certain French way. In France, most of the king scallops come from the Atlantic and are called the St. James scallop. There is a popular theory behind how the dish got its name. According to legend, St. James saved a knight from drowning and when the knight emerged from the water, he was covered with shells and so the phrase “shells of St. James” came around. However, it is to be noted that the dish isn’t directly connected to St. Jacques/James and only gets the name from him.
Over the years, the dish has become extremely popular in many parts of the world. While it remains traditionally French, the Italians of Montreal have adopted it as their own and added a twist to it. They have replaced the original Gruyère cheese used in the preparation with classic mozzarella cheese.
