How Weather Works in Missouri
It doesn't
Summer is hot. Sometimes dry, sometimes rainy. Thunderstorms are nice.
Fall is dry. If it rains, I will cry.
Winter is cold, but not always. Snow is sometimes, hail is sometimes. It's been 70° and there's a foot of snow on the ground.
Sometimes it's cloudy for a week straight, and then it snows around your city. The cities and towns right next to us all got snow, but some weather-witch put up an anti-snow dome and we didn't even get rain.
80° one day, hail the next, 75° the day after
Occasionally, California will have a wildfire. The sky uses this as a reason to turn pink.
March. It's April, but a surprise frost kills all your daffodils after they've been blooming for almost 3 weeks.
April. See 6, add more Thunderstorms.
May. June Lite
June. Droughts, except when there isn't, and then there's a flood. The frogs are loud. Yes, this counts as weather.
July. Mosquitos. Clouds of 'em.
August. Back to fall, but make it 80-90°
Whenever [insert school here] has a track meet, there will be tornado watches/warnings (count 'em, almost 10 in a night), lightning, and some events get canceled even though we were all there til midnight
North of [insert street] always has different weather than south of [same street]
Walk ten steps and you'll go from a gallon of water per square inch to sunny days and Jesus Clouds.
Ignore what I said about winter and fall. We've had a week of pure sunshine for Christmas and snow for Halloween in the same year.
Weatherman is the worst job ever.
Being in the shade and being in the sun is two different states of existence.
Went to school once. Sunny for ten minutes on the way there, rained the next ten cuz we crossed the road from #15.
It'll be sunny when you can't go outside and sad and depressed when you can. Maybe. Idk it might be fine.
if anyone has any others, you're welcome to add.

Yall remember how Texas had that "report an abortion" form that they had to take down after a week?
Well, Missouri has one, only it's for reporting transgender concerns.
Comrades. Friends. Romans. Countrymen. You know what to do.

yesterday I went to a little meeting at my local queer community center and I was admiring their bookshelves and mentioned that I work at the public library and someone said "well I bet they don't have any [LGBTQ+ books] at our library" and I was like um. yes we do. we have tons of them. half of our employees are queer leftists so they said "oh well I bet they don't in [nearby rural county]" and I was like uh once again yes they absolutely do. gay people live and work there as well
so here's a quick reminder that if you don't think your local library has enough queer centered materials you should actually check before assuming, and if you're not satisfied with their collection you should submit a request for more such books. I don't know what the political landscape of libraries looks like outside the us rn, but within the us no matter where you are, I promise you there are employees at your library fighting for inclusion and intellectual freedom and they can't win without vocal public support

640-year-old fly, anyone?
We're not sure how long this fly has been in this 14th-century notary's notebook, but it was a favorite among the students who spotted it in class a few weeks ago.

as far as christian-themed art goes I'm of the opinion that you cannot meaningfully appropriate mainline western catholicism (it's a massively powerful branch of a religion that has been spread by imperialism and that actively seeks out converts as a core tenet. how could you appropriate it?) but that it is possible to engage with it shallowly and that that's fair game to make fun of. I will not be taking questions at this time

doing a lot of thinking about how scared sam was as a child
in the pilot we learn sam left hunting, not because he wanted normal but because he wanted safe.
in a draft of the pilot script, sam says he doesn't want to help dean find john because he "just stopped having nightmares" (obviously taken out because it would contradict later plot lines with sam having nightmares about jess dying but i wish they had replaced it with something similar because i think a lot less people would think of sam as selfish if we had got to hear it)
we also get this scene in 1x04
Tumblr media Tumblr media
this is four episodes into the show! sam has been back in hunting for a month? maybe? and he is already having nightmares about the job again (and while dean tries to act tough, sam sees straight through him and knows that he's scared too)
hunting again is bringing back bad feelings that he thought he'd left behind but at this point, he is motivated to find his father and avenge jessica so he pushes through his fear, as a kid he didn't have these things to fuel him. he was just this sad lonely little child who was terrified out of his mind about all of the evil in the world that he should have been sheltered from!! terrified that his dad and his brother were going to be killed anytime they were out of his line of sight!!
in conclusion, i could've raised him, i could've kept him safe

“To think of the Midwest as a whole as anything other than beautiful is to ignore the extraordinary power of the land. The lushness of the grass and trees in August, the roll of the hills (far less of the Midwest is flat than outsiders seem to imagine), the rich smell of soil, the evening sunlight over a field of wheat, or the crickets chirping at dusk on a residential street: All of it, it has always made me feel at peace. There is room to breathe, there is a realness of place. The seasons are extreme, but they pass and return, pass and return, and the world seems far steadier than it does from the vantage point of a coastal city. Certainly picturesque towns can be found in New England or California or the Pacific Northwest, but I can't shake the sense that they're too picturesque. On the East Coast, especially, these places seem to me aggressively quaint, unbecomingly smug, and even xenophobic, downright paranoid in their wariness of those who might somehow infringe upon the local charm. I suspect this wariness is tied to the high cost of real estate, the fear that there might not be enough space or money and what there is of both must be clung to and defended. The West Coast, I think, has a similar self-regard...and a beauty that I can't help seeing as show-offy. But the Midwest: It is quietly lovely, not preening with the need to have its attributes remarked on. It is the place I am calmest and most myself.”

Saw a thread on Twitter abt this so it's on my mind... I rlly rlly rlly hate the idea that including talk about safewords or consent or safe sex in fiction is "preachy" or "kills the mood" or whatever. People kept saying something to the tune of "yeah omg stop establishing safewords people have got to get NASTIER :/" and I hate the idea that safewords, negotiation, and consent are antithetical to "getting nasty". I know it's Just Fiction, but these are all the same sorts of things people say to avoid negotiating and establishing safewords in real life, so it really sticks out to me how many people are comfortable saying that they think negotiation is unsexy. I know it's a Twitter thread where people were bringing up Genshin Impact fanfiction so there's probably not a lot of actual kink relationships being practiced there but either way, kink is a lifestyle that's important to represent accurately in fiction and it's when people have normalized the idea that your partner asking you if something is okay during a scene is "so preachy and unsexy and cringe" that you start to open kink communities up to more abuse

reading the kingdoms and i see that missouri kite went to the james flint school of “redheaded gay sea captain willing to move heaven and earth to accomplish his goals, has committed a few atrocities, is incredibly violent but cares a lot, motivated by gay love and also rage, and once threw someone overboard for threatening to spill his secrets”
