Mission trips are meant as a way to help others, yet historically religious missions are a form of colonization and violent cultural oppression—and can be still today! mission trips are a common part of the experience growing up christian. For current or past christians (who went on a mission trip as a child or worked as a missionary as an adult)…. do you or do you not regret the work you did as a missionary?

Behold, I am a disciple of Jesus Christ, the Son of God. I have been called of him to declare his word among his people, that they might have everlasting life.

It was a 50/50 vote (between 2 people), so I just chose. This week's Hot Take is about Missionary Work
What is Missionary Work? Why do we do it? These are all important questions, so I'm going to give my completely unasked for opinion. Because that's what this series is all about, giving my opinions, and creating a forum for (civil) debate
The purpose of Missionaries is, no more or less, than to declare the Gospel, and give people the opportunity to make Covenants
This is why I had such an issue with how my Mission (& others) were run, specifically when it comes to Numbers. I think Numbers shouldn't be a part of missionary work at all, as it then makes it not about teaching the Gospel, but reaching a quota. It's even worse when Numbers become an issue of Faith & Righteousness. I loved my Mission, but the rhetoric about Numbers made me sick to my stomach (there was a GA who came to our Mission every January to tell us for 6 hours straight our only focus is reaching our numbers). This might make you ask "how do you know Missionaries are actually working." 2 words: Area Book. It's completely Digital now (at least on the Idaho Falls mission). So, why can't they switch from numbers to accurate Area Book reports
On Service Missions- I have massive respect for all Service Missionaries. I was about to transfer to one when I was sent home. But Service Missionaries are there to give Service, so I'm not a fan that they're now required to teach. That implies that Teaching Missions are the only way to preach the Gospel, which is not true. In fact, living the gospel is infinitely better than teaching, because they can see what living it entails (instead of just hearing it)
Members- Missionary Work is our job. In my Mission, the majority of work was focused on Member Work & Social Media work. This is because the best way to teach isn't to have people who are very clearly trying to sell them something knocking on their doors, but friends genuinely sharing an important part of their lives
But, we can't be manipulative. We can't develop friendships, just to break them off if they stop going, or decide not to join. That's love-bombing, not actual friendship. And thankfully, it's not common in my home & mission wards, but they had to put it in PmG for a reason. If they don't accept the Gospel, then we shouldn't push, because relationships are the core of the Gospel. We should always see the person, and not the convert. We should share the Gospel because we want others to feel the joy we do (at least give them the opportunity to), not because we have to

The Primary Mission Of The Church Is To Make Disciples
By Frank J Casella

With my last blog post about ' What Is The Catholic Church?" I talked about the need for sharing the Gospel with others. So this blog entry I want to complete this process by talking about making disciples, that we are not only called to proclaim the good news by virtue of our baptism, but in Matthew 28 verse 15 Jesus commanded us to go and make disciples.
It was not a suggestion as all too many people believe. Moreover, the Church's primary mission is to make disciples, and to be an redemptive agency in the world, which is why it is so important for Catholics to attend Mass and learn about the faith.
Renewal is an invitation for every person and every parish here in the archdiocese of Chicago, as we are now in the Renew My Church process.
As the website says:
"Talk about your faith. That’s right – talk about it. Your relationship with Jesus. Your reliance on the sacraments. The joy and/or peace you find in prayer. You may be familiar with the saying, “Preach the Gospel at all times and when necessary use words.” Guess what – it’s time to use words. Your spouse, your children, your grandchildren, your friends, coworkers, neighbors all need you to speak about the source of all love, truth, beauty and goodness at work in your life. They need you to talk about your faith in Jesus Christ and His Church. For the anxious and weary (and we are many), here is a helpful resource on how to share your faith - and more will be added!"
The Catholic Church is the largest Christian denomination in the world. According to the Pew Research Center, 78 percent of all Catholics say they are very happy with the church's role in their lives, while only about one-in-ten say they are not very happy.
This is why us Catholic men should take the lead in setting the tone or mission Imperatives for our family and parish, and other areas of society, where our Priest's and Sister's may not be present or even invited.
One thing to consider, for example, is to host a men's gathering at your parish, and with that you can walk through the CMCS Forum experience of presenting a topic or idea, and then facilitate a discussion for the men to compare notes on their spiritual faith journey. CMCS can provide you the 'play book' and support you with this.
The bottom line is that you should not be (feeling like your) doing this alone. Rather, as both Deacon John Rangel and I have seen, the way to make people and parishes grow in holiness is to foster lay-led pastoral care. A change of culture (and hearts) is needed.

Contented
It is wonderful to wake up in my bed after several days in Lubbock TX. I was given a full blown tour of my husband’s beloved Texas Tech campus, enjoyed meals with his family and friends, and attended his dear friend’s memorial service. Thanks be to God for home! Home sweet home. There’s no place like it. Repeating in my mind are the Apostle Paul’s words: “I have learned that in whatever STATE I…

"DISCIPLES ASK FOR MEN AND MILLIONS," Toronto Star. October 4, 1913. Page 5. --- Plan to Carry On World-Wide Movement Within Five Years. ---- SOCIETIES ARE UNITED ---- A. E. Corey Outlines the Plans Before a Huge Union Meeting. ---- One thousand workers for the home and foreign field in the next five years and $2,400,000 for the existing and support of these, was the definite program laid down by Mr. A. G. Corey as he outlined the "Men and Millions Movement" before an enthusiastic union meeting of the six societies of the Disciples of Christ at Massey Hall.
The movement was begun by Mr. W. F. Hold, a prominent businessman, of Redlands, Cal., who was not satisfied that the Disciples should stop at the million-dollar campaign, upon which they are engaged, but that they should band together all the permanent givers and raise a second million.
Money Needed, Too. Mr. Corey pointed out that the call for men and women, meant as well a call for money. They did not intend to ask for any definite amount, but that the workers should be supported. He was confident that the call for workers would be one of the most potent factors in overcoming provincialism amongst people.
Some of the problems which have to be solved were referred to by Mr. Corey. These included the Christianizing of the thousands of immigrants from Europe, as well as of the negroes and Orientals already in the States. In addition there were the great unoccupied districts in the West and North-West, which were at present without churches. Then there are demands of the foreign field, which are of enormous importance, and the very essential work of the College of Missions.
All Are United. "I believe that at no time, nor in any hour, has the essential unity of our work been more demonstrated than at this time when these six great missionary organizations are going out with but one word written upon their banner, 'The Unity of the Work," declared Mr. Corey, amidst great applause.

Man there are so many horror stories about missionary work out there. I mean it's already problematic for the people they try to convert but apparently missionary work is incredibly abusive towards the people involved too. 👀

No actually I'm gonna keep talking about my Christmas/Christianity in Ninjago concepts. What if Ninjago has Mormons now. Seriously. It'd be so fuckin funny. Imagine some poor 19-year-olds getting assigned to the "Ninjago City Area Mission". Imagine trying to proselyte after everyone's been through the fucking Merge. Trying to fit that into their worldview. Hilarious.
