My Rebecca Jessel Playlist <3
Next up on my little playlist arc is Rebecca Jessel. She was a character who definitely deserved better, and I do believe to be a good person. This playlist is a bit shorter than the others, but I still hope it is reminiscent of dear Miss Jessel. Do enjoy, and please don't "Add to Other Playlist."

Having read the Turn of the Screw recently and then watching Haunting Of Bly Manor is funny because Bly Manor is only like half the plot and 0% of the characterization is the same

⏰Chapter Warning⏰ None
Astarion took a lap around the building to cool off before returning to his office- The last thing he needed was Gale asking him how he was doing after that little shit-show. Korrilla had also given him something of a runaround after he left Raphael’s office. She accidentally printed his requested forms on legal-size paper (because she forgot that she didn’t restock the printer before break) and then wasn’t sure if being in the wrong formatting would invalidate the paperwork, so Astarion had to wait for her to go get a fresh package of printer paper from the supply closet in the basement, which made him feel like a dick because she had to climb four flights of stairs to do that.
The problem with Korrilla was that Astarion never knew if she was in on Raphael’s torment or if she was just making a series of human mistakes because he made her nervous- though neither answer made the interaction any less annoying.
When Astarion got back to his office, Gale was still there. He was flipping through a heavily marked-up handbook on technical writing for business communications, staring at the pages as if he were either heavily engrossed by the reading -unlikely- or trying to light the damn thing on fire. It only made sense once he stepped into the room and saw Xenia posted up in the corner on her phone.
“Ah, Miss Bellona. Exactly who I was hoping to run into.” Astarion said, snapping the tension in the room like a loose thread. Gale nearly jumped out of his skin. “You look terrible.”
Xenia looked up at him with narrowed eyes, chewing one of her nails on her good hand. “I’ve had a rough few months.” She replied in that flat, desperately-trying-not-to-care tone that made her so fun to tease.
“I’ve heard. What do you need help with?” He slapped down his stack of paperwork on his desk and sat at his computer. Astarion saw Gale watching him wide-eyed, and he wondered how much Gale had pried while he was gone.
“I wanted to get the assignment sheets for my missing work from Survey of Gothic Literature,” Xenia said. Gale casually turned in his chair and pretended to rearrange the books on his shelf, giving them the courtesy of at least pretending to check-out of their conversation. “I thought I should get started on finishing that before the rest of my classes start…”
“Of course, you dropped off around Project… 4, was it? I think I kept a folder with your missing assignments somewhere.” With a few keystrokes, Astarion’s computer lurched back to life, fan buzzing as the machine recalibrated after being shut off for a month straight.
“I think the last thing I turned in was the 2nd character study…” Xenia replied. “…or maybe I just finished it- do you recall reading a paper from me about Miss Jessel?”
“I don’t, but I’ve read nearly a thousand bad-to-mediocre composition papers since then, so it’s likely I just forgot.” Astarion clicked through the expired Canvas shell to skim the grade book and determine which assignments he needed to pull.
“Oh, so my writing's mediocre?”
“I’m sorry, your 1200-word sophomore-level essay demonstrated a pure mastery of your craft. How foolish of me to forget when the beauty of your words brought me to tears.”  Astarion scoffed. He found the file folder he was looking for and printed it off. “Gale, I know you’re terribly busy, but could you grab those papers from the 2nd floor breakroom?”
“Absolutely!” Gale was on his feet and heading for before the request had fully left Astarion’s mouth. He gave Xenia a friendly smile. “Back in a flash!”
“Take your time.” The comment came out a lot more passive-aggressive than Astarion meant it. He watched Gale leave the room and listened for the stairwell door to open and close. Astarion turned back to Xenia. “What did you say to him?”
Xenia shrugged. “He asked about my dad, and I told him that I stabbed him to death.”
“Did you happen to… elaborate on that?”
“No, he didn’t ask.”
Astarion sighed and pinched the bridge of his nose. “You know, if you want people to stop treating you like a freak, you’ll have to stop acting like one.”
Xenia crossed her good arm in front of herself and pouted. “It’s not like someone wouldn’t have told him anyways.”
“Probably, but even a complete stranger would make you seem at least a little saner,” Astarion replied.
Xenia went quiet for a moment, her lips twisting into a disgruntled snarl. Her eyes drifted to the water-stained ceiling tiles. Astarion sort of understood her twisted logic. There were a lot of people on campus who treated her like a ticking time bomb, regardless of whether they knew her exact circumstances or not. If people would be convinced that she was a monster regardless, perhaps it was better if she was the one doing the convincing- at least then she was in control. It hurts less to meet someone's rotten expectations than to try your hardest and fail to prove them wrong.
“I suppose you want to know what happened last semester?” she muttered.
“Tell me or don’t.” Astarion shrugged. “I could not care less.”
Xenia rolled her eyes. “You’re such a dick.”
“What I am is a mandatory reporter, so think carefully about what you want to tell me- unless you like filling out copious amounts of paperwork,” Astarion said. “Do you need the reading materials? I could just lend you my anthology since you’re the only one left in the class.”
“I’ve still got my book from last year…” Xenia replied, mind still very clearly elsewhere. “…Do you have siblings?”
Astarion paused. “Yes. 6 of them. Why?”
“How do you refer to them… like in your mind? Do you call them your siblings?”
“I don’t think of the much anymore, honestly. But I suppose when I do, I think of them as their first names.” Astarion sighed. “Is there something you actually wanted to talk to me about?”
“I’m having trouble figuring out how to think of my sister,” Xenia admitted. “I guess she was never really my sister, and she was never really to blame, but…”
“You’re allowed to be angry at her,” Astarion replied. “I think you should be, frankly.”
Xenia mulled over his words for a moment, and Astarion could see her run her tongue along the inside of her cheek, absent-mindedly tracing the contours of her scar. She opened her mouth to say something, but the door in the stairwell creaked open, and she clamed up, wary of being overheard.
***
Gale felt horribly selfish for wanting to bolt out of the office as badly as he did. He wanted Xenia to feel comfortable and safe around him -the poor thing seemed like she’d been through enough- but he’d locked up. It wasn’t difficult for Gale to surmise that she probably didn’t commit patricide for the fun of it- those kinds of actions are usually born out of extreme desperation. However, whenever he thought about trying to relate to her or lift the mood, the impulse was killed by some strange insistence that he was being too personal, too forthcoming, too intimate.
He envied the ease with which Astarion had struck up a rapport with her- it seemed that despite his posturing, Astarion did, in fact, have a few soft spots. Gale told himself that it was because Astarion had leagues more experience in these departments than he did, but still, he worried. This was the first time he’d been on a college campus purely as a professional, and it felt a lot more daunting than he’d ever imagined.
It took Gale a hot minute of wandering around on the wrong floor to figure out Astarion meant “second floor” in the standard British English sense of the phrase, and the break room was actually located on the third floor. He collected the small stack of orphaned papers from the tray next to the copier and returned to Astarion’s -his- office.
Xenia was still there, Idle chatting about the books she’d read while in involuntary hold. “Do you teach V.C. Andrews? She’d gothic lit, isn’t she?”
“I’m not much of an Americanist,” Astarion replied. “If I’m forced to teach Southern Gothic authors, I tend to gravitate towards Falkner.”
“Not Poe?”
Astarion gave her a derisive look, but Gale handed the stack of papers before he could respond. He flipped through to ensure everything was in order and handed them over to Xenia. “You’ve got two more plot summaries, a thematic analysis, and a comparative essay for the final. Work on them at your leisure.”
Xenia took the papers and tossed them in the tattered messenger bag she’d brought without a second glance. “Thanks!” She said. “Is there anything else I need?”
Astarion put a hand on the paperwork he’d brought in with him, thumbing over the corner before he shot a scrutinizing look over at Gale. “Yes… but we’ll talk about it later.” He said.
“Alight, see you around then.” Xenia shrugged and slung her bag over her good shoulder but didn’t quite get it, and the strap slid down her arm, catching hard in the crook of her elbow. She let out a frustrated groan.
“Here, allow me.” Gale stepped forward and looped the strap comfortably over her shoulder.
Xenia cocked her head and gave Gale a thoughtful look, her dark eyes piercing right through him. “Thank you…” she muttered before she turned and hurried out of the office.
“She seems…” Gale trailed off. He wasn’t sure what Xenia seemed like; he’d never met a murderer before- at least not to his knowledge.
“Shorter than you’d thought she’d be?” Astarion asked flippantly, reclining in his chair. That was fair; Gale had a hard time imagining how someone as little and frail as Xenia could overpower a full-grown man, boxcutter or no.
“Did she really-”
“Self-defense,” Astarion answered several questions ahead. “I don’t suggest asking her anything else about it. She didn’t have a particularly pleasant home life.”
“I’d imagine not,” Gale replied, sitting back down at his desk. He tried his credentials again- still nothing. “-do you know how long it should take for me to be put in the university’s system?”
“Surely you should be in by now…” Astarion replied. He moved to look over Gale’s shoulder. He was so close Gale could feel his breath tickling the back of his neck- he had to suppress a shiver.
Astarion said something, pointing at the computer screen. He had such striking eyes, such a warm brown that they were almost red.
Gale completely missed what. “Sorry?”
“Try logging in without the server address,” Astarion repeated a slight edge in his voice. “Everything after the ‘at’ symbol.”
“Right.” Gale deleted the back half of his username and tried again. The computer loaded and loaded and loaded.
“That’s typically a good sign. Computers on campus take forever to log you on the first time.” Astarion said. He picked up the picture of Yenna and examined it dispassionately. “Cute kid, is she yours?”
“Ah, no… that’s my niece.” Gale felt suddenly and incredibly self-conscious. “I’ve always wanted my own, but it wasn’t in the cards, I’m afraid.”
The admission shocked him slightly, but he supposed it was true. Mystra had never wanted kids, and Gale wanted to keep her pleased, so he went along with that. But Gale had always loved kids. He’d been so excited when Yenna was born that he could hardly put her down. Still, when people asked him and Mystra if they were planning on having kids, he’d just nod dutifully while she explained that he was too focused on his career to think about kids.
“Shame,” Astarion said, setting the picture frame back down.
Gale’s computer screen went black, and then an empty Windows desktop appeared. Success!
“Just in time to log out for the all-hands meeting!” Astarion exclaimed looking at his watch.
“Naturally…” Gale sighed.

The Turning and its relationship with the color red
in this i talk about and analyse scenes in which The Turning use the color red.
in the featurette they say that "every frame and every color is designed to tell part of a story" so i dont think im pulling this out of my ass.
TW// talks about grooming, SA. not graphic
background information: my theory (its not very out there its heavily implied) is that Quint groomed miles. I see the ghosts as mostly not real, but everyones paranoia, the whole buildup is all the characters triggering eachothers PTSD until it all explodes into a paranoid episode in the last act. and i ignore everthing that happend after they drive out that gate. to me they are getting family therapy somehwere in the city.
I think red represents Trauma, everytime the color shows up its while the characters are talking about or expressing their trauma,
Both Kate and MIles wear red, in MIles sweater (given to him by Quint) and in Kates coat. I think this shows how their connected by their experineces with SA.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
while MIles is dissociating hes staring out his window with red drapes
Tumblr media
In the Brave face scene (that was fun fact, inspired by David Bowie) both Kate and flora are wearing red coats, this is after Flora re-lives her trauma of leaving the estate. Floras cost is brighter, because her traumas newer.
Tumblr media
the only photo of Quint we see he is wearing red, while Miles and Flora are wearing light colors. we dont ever see them wear light colors again. i think this represents how Quints actions bled onto the children and changed them forever. Yknow PTSD.
Tumblr media
even the horse rein is red, because Quint worked with the horses i personaly view the horse whip and the rein to be connected to him. and anything that has to do with him is inherently traumatic.
Tumblr media
In the third act Kate wears a red robe, showing how shes wraped into trauma as she experineces flashbacks, in the form of seeing Miss Jessel being SAed, and trying to get the children out fo the house.
Tumblr media
In Miles end scene, when hes talking about how Quint "wont let him leave" hes surrounded by red. I think what he says could also mean that the Trauma Quint inflicted on him wont leave him. yknow,,, PTSD.
Tumblr media
and in the "ending" that shoudlnt be mentioned
The doll that Miles compares Kate too because its broken is wearing red
Tumblr media
and in the last scene the bed and kates outfit is red, when kate succumbs to her mental illness or whatever they were trying to portray.

Can you write angst for owen? 🧍🏻‍♀️ thank you
warnings: major character death, bly manor spoilers
word count: 348
Tumblr media
- Owen had told you not to stay in the house after dark and you had listened
- Like clockwork, when the sun began to set, you packed up and left the manor
- The rest of the house knew this routine and how strictly you stuck to it
- But they also knew of your fondness for the children
- If Dani needed extra help, you were happy to jump at the chance, and you often entertained the kids with Owen in the kitchen
- Kids were your weakness, you had said when applying for the job
- The residents of Bly, dead or alive, knew this
- Peter Quint knew this, as well, meaning he knew you posed a threat to his (and to a lesser extent, Miss Jessel’s) plans to continue inhabiting the bodies of the children
- Owen had left the manor much earlier that day, needing to handle some business with his mother’s estate in town
- He had held your face between his hands, looking you directly in the eyes, and begging you to come home before dark, and you agreed
- However, things in the manor seemed to be moving particularly slowly that day, and you quickly lost track of time
- When you finally looked at the clock, you gasped, gathering your things, ready to rush out of the door—
- Until you heard a scream upstairs
- Flora, it sounded like
- You raced up the stairs, taking her in your arms and asking her what was wrong
- She shook her head, tears streaming down her cheeks, her brother behind her, shouting “No!”
- Just then, you saw the front door burst open, the Lady in the Lake’s empty face looking back at you
- Her soaked gown left a trail behind her
- Frozen in shock, you were unable to move besides pushing Flora out of the way
- The last thing you saw was Owen looking on in horror as he entered the foyer from the kitchen entrance, and the last thing you heard was your lover’s voice screaming out for you as the cold, wet hands of the Lady squeezed the life out of you

Will Jenna Not Return to Season 15?!
Tumblr media
Jenna Lyons was absent from BravoCon and it might have been because she’s booked and busy.
But is she too busy for RHONY?
She was at a fashion event with Jessel Taank during BravoCon, but Jessel eventually showed up in Las Vegas while Jenna was missing in action.
And after the interviews she has been doing since RHONY wrapped, I’m worried.
It would be just my luck if my favourite housewife from the reboot didn’t return for the next season.
I would be absolutely gutted if she left after only one season.
But the women were ganging up on her about the silliest of things. And at the reunion Ubah Hassan made it seem like Jenna had no real friends on the show.
She said that none of the women had wanted her to join the show.
It therefore worries me that this wasn’t a very pleasant experience for her.
When she was at her most vulnerable after fixing her teeth, Erin Lichy threw her under the bus and made it seem like she thought she was better than the rest of the group.
When she was on “The Tonight Show” with Jimmy Fallon, she tried to avoid the question about her returning to RHONY, and when he pressed, she answered:
"I don't have an answer. I genuinely don't know."
The audience was begging her to do it, and Jimmy agreed. He said that the fans loved her.
She’s undoubtedly one of the better additions to the reboot.
She admitted that doing the show was a tough experience, and for someone who appears both very guarded and vulnerable, it must be exhausting to expose yourself.
However, she did a great job telling us her life story even if the other housewives didn’t value it very much.
Sadly, it looks like Jenna is going to be one of those one and done housewives, but what a one hit wonder she will end up being.
Although I think we’ve never seen a housewife of her calibre before, I’m greatly thankful that she had the guts to join the RHONY reboot at all.

⸸ The Turn of the Screw ⸸
(What if Miles was a yandere?)
Based on: The Turn of the Screw by Henry James, The Turning (2020)
Characters: Aged-Up Yandere Miles Fairchild, the Fairchilds, Mrs. Grose, Peter Quint and Ms. Jessel
Warning: terror and violence, yandere is its own warning
Includes: childhood trauma, death of parents, fear of loss, gaslighting, typical gothic horror themes, maybe supernatural, maybe psychological, obsession, Victorian era
~~~~~~~~~
⸸ Somewhere, East of England, a grand and immense estate sits over more than hundreds of acres of land.
⸸ For generations, a family of great wealth and prestige has been residing within its walls. But for years, ever since the last Mr. and Mrs. Bly passed away, its gates had been shut from the rest of the world. Many wonder what had become of the once glamorous family, but many more worry for the orphaned children.
⸸ But it had been nearly a decade since. The little babe, the youngest of the two children, Flora, was now a young girl. The boy, her brother, the one that was only seven or eight when he witnessed his parents' passing was now a young man, soon to be the new head of the Fairchild family.
⸸ Time had moved on. It seemed that the sun is beginning to shine its light once more on the family...but it seems that the Master of the House is still trapped in the darkness.
Tumblr media
Miles Fairchild (The Young Master of Bly Manor)
⸸ He was once a sweet child, believe it or not. Spoiled and stubborn just like his parents, but what child of a socialite wasn't?
⸸ Miles was given everything he ever wanted. If he wanted a new toy, he shall have it. A black stallion that could easily dislocate a grown man's jaw with its kick? Do not fret, the mother will be sure to nag the father until he changed his mind.
⸸ They did so out of guilt, for they believed that they had been lacking as mentors. Far often, they spent their time overseas than at home with their only child.
⸸ This flaw persisted even into his adulthood, as he was only ever surrounded by servants that had no choice but to give in to his demands lest they lose their income, and three enabling guardians, two of which were now deceased.
Really, is it still a mystery as to why he didn't take your rejection so nicely?
⸸ And another thing you must understand as a new member of the Bly Household is the Young Master's...'aversion' to loneliness, and more confusing perhaps, his revulsions towards anyone that gets too close. Let me explain...
⸸ Miss Jessel might have only been his governess, but he looked up to her as one would a dear, older sister. In the end, she abandoned him.
⸸ Then, in what Miles assumed was done out of grief and heartbreak, Peter Quint drunk himself to the point of being incapable of riding a horse. The Young Master was only just a boy, then, when he found his new father figure dead, his neck bent at a deadly angle.
⸸ Truly, he fears you would leave him like Miss Jessel did, or die just like Quint the moment he leaves you for even a second.
⸸ Then, you start saying you do not want to be here, that you could no longer bear his abuse, that you could no longer stand this place and all of its dark secrets.
⸸ Ghosts, you say? Dear, there are no ghosts.
⸸ And as harsh and stern he may be, he was not a cruel master. Ask everyone that ever met or worked for him. He never once raised his hand to hurt a living thing.
⸸ And with you spouting nonsense about Peter Quint's ghost tormenting you, and Miss Jessel pleading you to leave, no one will believe that it was him who gave you those bruises around your wrists.
⸸ And at times, even you yourself questioned if you were right. Were these bruises really from his hands? Or had you simply hurt yourself, and deluded yourself like you did those phantoms? Had it ever been his intention to make you his prisoner, or was he keeping you here out of concern for your safety?
⸸ Were you wrong to lash out on him for being concerned for you?
"It was never my intent to hurt you, Miss. I care and worry for you, I truly do. But I know that your mother is mentally ill, and I...I fear that you suffer the same affliction."
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
This is more of an excuse to vent my frustrations about the movie than anything. I really liked the original, so I was hesitant to watch the movie (especially after seeing the ratings). Now that I did, I understand why. I loved the setting, atmosphere, Wolfhard, and the rest of the actors, but the ending was so disappointing.

The Turning: Strong Animals (symbolism)
I’ve been in a mood so have another analysis, this time of the fact that Miles and Flora are consistently referred to as animals - specifically thoroughbred horses -and the fact that Peter Quint’s job is taming (or breaking) horses.
“It’s a strong animal. If you don’t exert power over it, you’ll never gain control. That’s what Quint taught me.”
As always, it’s The Turning so tw for discussions of canon types of abuse etc
The really, really interesting part is that Quint is of course a man who was employed to tame and break in horses. Given the way that he taught Miles, it’s clear that Quint literally breaks his horses, whipping them incredibly hard and driving them harder than necessary.
Using this, and Mrs Grose’s insistence on comparing the children to horses, symbolises the way that Quint broke the people around him - he broke Miss Jessel, Miles and Flora, all of whom are referred to as animals at certain points of the narrative. He even broke Mrs Grose - moving into the house she love dso dearly and deliberately taking the master bedroom. Even in itself, this line seems specific - the master bedroom is typically reserved for the person with the most power in the house. He does this, alongside removing boundaries the others put in place (ie ability to lock doors)
Kate is a really cool part of that comparison, because she specifically encouraged Flora to let her “wild animal” out and be brave. This specifically encourages Flora to be something other than what she has been taught to be. Not thoroughbred, not controlled, but wild and untamed. Free of Quint’s control.
There’s also the scene where Miles looks scared and is being chased by Kate on the horse, and then suddenly he turns into Quint and Kate is being chased by him instead.
One other thing I’m struggling to analyse is the Samson and Delilah horses. Those names feel really specific (after the Biblical story where Samson was incredibly strong but Delilah cut his hair and took that away from him). I think there must be something there but idk what.

Turn of the screw blogging day 3:
I think I'm coming down with a cold so I decided to guard my voice and not sing today, but I did hum along to the recording of act 1 as I drove home from work. I think my brain is starting to grok scenes 1, 2, and 3.
Tumblr media
This is the recording I've been listening to so far, but I'm gonna change it up soon (it's never good to listen to the same recording too many times since then you start internalizing their stylistic gestures and it's always best to make your own)
I quite like this recording. I'm very impressed with the children, they're very good singers and even in audio only, they bring such richness to their characters. The Peter Quint is also amazing, he captures the quiet malice and arrogant capriciousness of the character in a really stunning way.
I cannot say I'm super impressed with any of the ladies. The Governess is ok, but I'm listening to this to learn my part and she's got a lot of weird pitchiness that might not stand out to others, but it does to me. Mrs Grose is decent, she's got some good character coming through, but doesn't stand out like the kids or Quint do. I don't care for the Miss Jessel much if I'm honest. She sounds like she's singing the notes she's supposed to sing and there's not much personality beyond that.

“That’s how Quint taught me [to ride]. That’s a strong animal. If you don’t exert power over it, then. . you’ll never gain control.”
Miles was taught this at a very impressionable age, when he was just starting to become a man, by a man that he trusted. A man who used that trust to then abuse him in just about every way imaginable, who ‘exerted power’ over him, so that he could control Miles. At fifteen, Miles thought that was what it meant to be a man. And even when the man was dead, Miles still felt like Quint was the one in control. If he’d just told Kate what had happened, what was still happening, she could’ve just taken him and Flora and run. If he’d told Mrs. Grose what Quint was doing, she maybe could’ve convinced his uncle to get rid of Quint (even though we find out that she knew more than she was letting on and didn’t do a damn thing until Miles was already so damaged, and Miss Jessel was dead). But Miles didn’t tell anyone anything, because he was so convinced of the power Peter Quint had over him.

The Turning Review!
Im so confused on the ending of the turning.
Like, is kate going crazy? Are they making her believe shes going crazy? Is quint real? Is Mrs grose really dead??
At the end miles smiles like he knows something and he tells flora to keep quiet that they were talking about kate being crazy is he manipulating her? Becuase we all know miles plays games with kate.
Maybe im crazy, but also think was miles possessed by quint? Becuase of that scene in the bedroom where he kisses her cheek (or maybe goes in for a kiss??) And hes she looks good on a horse but hey idk just a thought
Didnt she imagine them escaping?? Becuase if she did is mrs grose still dead? We don't see her again
I watched it for shits and giggles but jesus christ
I even kinda wish we got more coverage on why miles got expelled? Well we know why he got expelled but i wish we got like a scene where we see it or smthn idk but what does he know about kate that we dont know? Did he put quint up to driving miss jessel away? Did mrs grose kill him? Were not sure
Do they even exist or is kate imagining it all due to a genetic disorder
Even when she gets the letters from her mother its like what the fuck because 1. How did her mother know what was going on 2. Did her mother know about miss jessel? 3. she said she was seeing things, was it the same things kate was seeing in the house? 4. What?
Maybe im misreading it or maybe its suppose dto be mysterious but i want to know more about miles relationship with quint because he got miles into alcohol and all and maybe miles was drunk and thats why he played the games on kate?? Even when they play flashlight tag who was she following? Was is the spirit of miss jessel or maybe quint even the horse samsung, was it the horse that killed quint?
I have so many questions, but ill stop my rant now
Bye for now

I guess I understand why Mike's Bly Manor didn't sit right with so many fans of Turn of the Screw. Peter Quint in Bly Manor was the representation of greed, of obsessive love, of selfish love and the root cause of everything Miles had to go through. Peter Quint in the books was a question. If he truly were the evil, Mrs Grose saw him as, or if he simply refused to bow down according to the norms of social class. If his sexuality and affair with Miss Jessel threatened the carefully constructed codes of conduct. If truly it was his ghost preying upon Miles or if it was simply an ill deduction by the narrator herself.
