“So, how do we get out of here?” Adrien asked, stepping closer towards his beloved to slip an arm around her shoulder.
“[redacted]”
Marinette blinked at that. “Are you serious?” she asked in a deadpan voice.
“Does Plagg’s cheese stink?” Tikki asked innocently.
“Hey!”
“What? It’s true!”
“You just don’t appreciate it’s lovely aroma,” he turned away with sniff.
“I have to agree with Tikki there, Plagg,” Adrien commented with a smirk. “Your Camembert smells awful.”
The dark-haired man gasped, clutching a hand dramatically to his chest. “Adrien! How could you? This is betrayal, betrayal most foul!”

The Consequences of His Actions
Chapter Ten
Duusu swirled through the air around Emilie’s chair, singing a wordless tune. Nooroo chased after her in an attempt to calm the Kwami, but she cried out her shrill song. Emilie calmly set her coffeecup on its saucer and rubbed her temples. A low but annoying burn thrummed behind her eyes.
“Duusu,’ Emilie chirped. Both Kwamis instantly halted. At the call of her name, the ancient peacock flew around to face her master. Emilie scraped a manicured nail gently down the side of Duusu’s head. “Let’s keep it down, yes? Mommy’s head hurts.”
The Kwami purred, rubbing against the woman’s hand. Nooroo silently watched from the side. His eyes drifted to the adjacent room that held the painting of his master, the painting that if touched in specific places would open–
“Nooroo.”
Nooroo was startled out of his thoughts but quickly recovered. He immediately flew over to Emilie, his head bowed in submission.
“Carry this,” Emilie said, motioning to a croissant on the platter before her. “I don’t want it to be said that I mistreated Ladybug’s mother.”
Her eyes followed the purple Kwami as it carried out her order without a word. “Afterall, I’m a good master, aren’t I?”
Nooroo lifted his head and met Emilie’s gaze. Her bright green eyes bore into him, refusing to reveal even a drop of the thoughts held within her head. Her smile was gentle, but he knew of the fangs that hid behind those thin lips. The rough exterior of the pastry scraped against his arms as Nooroo cheerfully smiled. “Of course, Master.”
Emilie stood up, brushed off her skirt, and made her way into the atelier with Nooroo and Duusu in tow. At the touch of her fingers, the trio began their descent. Though silent, Duusu swam around Emilie’s head, moving her body to some unknown tune. The fluid but erratic shifts set Nooroo on edge. It would only take one bump in the small space, one graze of a tail feather, to break the thin ice that was Emilie’s patience. He itched to chase after the broken being but that would only raise the risk of something going wrong, and Duusu would see it as a game.
Nooroo couldn’t help the sigh of relief as the ceiling opened, allowing entrance to the lair and freedom to the flighty peacock. Emilie smirked, and Nooroo realized she knew he had been nervous.
Emilie stepped into the bare room with a flourish of her wrist. “Sabine,” she called, “I brought you a snack. Don’t worry, I didn’t poison it this time.”
Emilie’s eyes adjusted quickly due to the streaming moonlight, subsequently making her freeze. Scattered debris and glass littered the floor, sparkling in the white light. She turned to see the still bound form of Sabine crouching where she had left her. Emilie slowly scanned the room, landing on a corner of shadows.
“Oh dear, it looks like I was interrupting something.” She stepped further into the room, closer to the hostage, and said, “As an uninvited guest, it’s rude to not introduce yourself.”
Soundlessly the shadows moved, advancing, growing, and taking shape. The luminescence warped reality, and he emerged from the licking shadows like an entity born from darkness. Emilie’s breath hitched but when she saw the green eyes, her lips curled into a grin.
“Chat Noir,” she said and pointedly looked over his shoulder. “All alone?”
Chat Noir didn’t respond, only stared. Emilie’s hand went up to the two brooches. “How did you find me?”
“Gabriel confessed everything.”
Emilie scoffed. “I find that hard to believe. He wouldn’t expose me at the risk of his son. Think of the emotional damage it would have on him with both mother and father imprisoned.”
Chat Noir swallowed hard and curled his fingers into a fist. His voice cracked as he said, “He would if his son was the one that asked.”
The tension thickened as hero and villain stared at each other, realization setting in the latter. Sabine watched with wide eyes, uncomfortable and confused with the sudden change in atmosphere.
Emilie cleared her throat. “I suppose I can’t use parental authority to make you hand over your Miraculous?”
Chat Noir snorted, but Emilie just shrugged. She swiped a few strands of hair out of her face with the grace of one used to being in front of a camera. “It didn’t hurt to ask.”
Sabine’s wide eyes went wider at the exchange. “A-Adrien?”
Emilie rolled her eyes and lolled her head over her shoulder to gaze down at the hostage disdainfully. Her lip curled up in disgust. “Obviously, Sabine. Quite the coincidence, is it not? My son and your daughter chasing after our Miraculouses? Well, mine now.”
Chat Noir furrowed his eyebrows. “Her Miraculous? I don’t understand,” he said looking between the two mothers. “You abducted her after learning about Ladybug’s identity. How could she–“
“Abducted her?” Emilie touched her cheek as if stung, though her smirk contradicted the action. “My dear son, I never go to anyone. Sabine came here of her own free will. I just… ensured she stayed.”
“Enough with the lies. As if I would believe Mrs. Cheng would willingly–”
“It’s true, Adrien.” Sabine said, cutting him off. She hung her head in shame. “I-I thought I could convince her… I wasn’t thinking, and I’ve put you and Marinette in a dangerous position.”
Chat Noir stared at Sabine, his brow scrunched as he tried to understand what she was saying. “Y-you…”
Emilie stepped in front of the woman, cutting off Chat Noir’s view of her. She spoke in a soothing voice, tilting her head so that Chat Noir looked up at her. “Don’t worry about her, son. This is a personal matter between Sabine and me. She wronged me and she needs to pay for it.”
“Wronged you?” Sabine’s voice squeaked from behind Emilie. “Emilie, you stole the Miraculouses and the book from my family.”
“Pardon me, but do I hear the pot calling the kettle black? Those Miraculouses don’t belong to your family.”
“Finding and stealing are different.”
Emilie whirled around, her eyes blazing with fury. “I found Duusu, and she chose me–”
“Enough!” Chat Noir grabbed Emilie’s shoulder and pushed her to the side. He stalked toward Sabine. His body shook as though struggling to support his weight, and his eyes were full of tears. “You’ve known about my mother… my father… and you’ve kept quiet all this time?”
“That’s not true!” Sabine jerked up, her body surging forward with the desperate force to be believed. “Adrien, I swear I didn’t–”
“That’s right, Adrien. She’s withheld the truth all this time.” Emilie said, appearing from the shadows, her voice a slithering wisp of air. She looped her arms through Chat Noir’s and laid her head on his shoulder. Her head fell back until her lips were near his ear. She whispered, “Just think: had she said something in the first place, we wouldn’t be here. I wouldn’t have been gone for so long. Your father wouldn’t be in jail. She kept us apart, but you can fix this.”
Faces of countless Parisians being used and twisted from their anger and frustration flitted through his mind. Marinette’s sobs as she, cornered and exhausted, revealed herself to him, breaking a rule she swore to uphold. His father’s betrayal yet the numb understanding as to why he did it. All of them raced circles in his head like a preview to a movie on repeat, each one waiting expectantly for him to fulfill his promise. Chat Noir’s mouth dried and his voice came out hoarse. “I can fix this?”
Emilie straightened up and turned Chat Noir to face her, gently cupping his cheek with a cold delicate hand. “Yes, my precious son. With the Ladybug and Black Cat Miraculouses, we can fix everything, regain the past… have a family again.”
In the background, Chat Noir heard Sabine calling out to him, pleading to pay no attention to his mother’s words. Emilie’s grip tightened as if affected by what Sabine was saying, but Chat Noir ignored the woman. His eyes and ears remained focused on his mother’s face. She rubbed gentle but firm circles with the pad of her thumb as she spoke, her eyes silently demanding him to keep looking at her. “We would play the piano together. Your father would be with us, happily listening. The three of us could even watch Solitude. I never got a chance to watch it with you.”
Chat Noir’s heart ached as he tried to draw up these images. He closed his eyes, leaning into his mother’s touch… and then he saw it, clips and snippets of conversations, moments from his past all simmering to the surface. Each one a bubble popping with scalding clarity.
“Her name is Ananta Haine… she’ll do anything, sacrifice anyone, to get what she wants.” His father’s powerless body fell from the top of the Eiffel Tower, discarded like the wrapper on a newly received toy. His body limp, resigned to his fate.
“She’s been one step ahead this entire time, and I… I’m nothing!” Marinette crumbled against him, sobbing her apologies into his arms as she confessed her intent to relinquish the Ladybug Miraculous.
“You never know, my precious son, people change.’” A man groveled at the feet of his mother as she leered down at him, desperate for her forgiveness, unable to afford losing his credibility.
“Emile was changed… damaged.”
Gabriel folded in on himself, dropping all airs of importance as he took in the news of Nathalie’s departure. “Nathalie take a vacation? Unlikely.”
“What could you possibly do?” Marinette stared up at him, her eyes, which once held so much life, were now empty and reflected her broken spirit.
“If you had known about my identity before my defeat, would you have revealed yourself?” Gabriel sat across from him, eyes piercing into his soul, looking for an answer that neither knew if really existed. Shadows framed his face, outlining his age and the weariness that was suddenly apparent. The same weariness he knew he would see if he were to look in a mirror. “So. How will you proceed?”
Chat Noir opened his eyes, his breath coming out in short gasps. A familiar sting pricked the corners of his eyes.
“I love you, mom,” he said, tears streaming. “I love you; I hope you know that.”
Emilie smiled and pulled him into an embrace. Chat Noir closed his eyes and enjoyed the warmth of his mother’s arms. He gripped her tightly, trying to take deep and steady breaths. His body shook as the tears rolled down his cheeks. He could hear her heart beating against his chest. The repeating lub-dub gave him a steady rhythm on which to concentrate.
Finally his body relaxed. He said, “I promise to fix everything.”
Emilie let go and tried to step back, but Chat Noir tightened his grip. He uttered tiny whispers of ‘I love you’ and ‘I promise’ over and over again as Emilie began to struggle to get away. Her arms beat weakly against his black suit as she demanded he let her go, but he barely felt it, protected from minor injuries and his mind elsewhere. He shut his eyes and drowned out any background noise, only listening to his own steady breathing and the now erratic beating of his mother’s heart. Burying his face against her shoulder, Chat Noir squeezed her one last time.
“Cataclysm.”
Emilie stiffened and her flailing ceased. Chat Noir could feel her slip away, but he refused to open his eyes. It was only when he had nothing left to hold that he opened them. Black dust fell through his fingers, sprinkling an already established pile. Chat Noir stared at his hands, turning them over as if only realizing they were there. He flexed his fingers, the last of his mother’s warmth vanishing.
Light gleamed off a hidden object within the remains. With a gulp, Chat Noir bent over to retrieve the item, pulling out the Peacock and Butterfly Miraculouses. They were speckled with ash, but he quietly wiped it off. His fingers lightly trembled as he cleaned the jewelry.
“Adrien…”
Chat Noir jumped, having forgotten he wasn’t the only one. The frantic beeping of his ring reached his ears, and he turned around as his suit faded away. Plagg spiraled out of the ring and landed exhausted on the floor. Adrien immediately picked him up, cradling the ancient body in a hand. He glanced over at Sabine.
Sabine sat in the light, her face twisted in anguish. Adrien gave a weak smile. “Don’t look at me like that.”
“Your mother… What have you done?”
“I promised them I would fix everything.” Adrien fondled the brooches in his hand, the metals cool against his sweaty palm. He swallowed hard as his thumb rubbed the bumpy surface of the Peacock Miraculous. “How did you know my mother?”
Sabine shook her head, unable to believe what she was seeing. Adrien took a step forward and she flinched. Frowning, Adrien stopped and sat on the ground.
“I’m not going to hurt you, Mrs. Cheng,” he said.
“You murdered your mother.”
“I did what I had to do.” Adrien took a breath. “Please…”
Sabine bit her lip and looked away. “I met Emilie while catering for one of her films. I found out she was to star in an upcoming movie with Tibetan influence. I invited her to travel with me to China, so she could do some research for the role.”
“Mom was great at acting,” Adrien said, fondly remembering, “but that doesn’t explain how you both obtained the Miraculouses.”
Sabine’s heart broke, but she continued. “My great-great-grandfather discovered the Miraculouses and the book at the base of a mountain when he was a boy. He quickly discovered their power, but he kept them hidden, knowing the power wasn’t his to use. Later when he became the head of the family, he displayed the jewels and book as sacred family heirlooms. I suppose he was hoping that whoever had lost them would come back, but when they didn’t, he decided that he would at least protect them. I wasn’t aware at the time of the power they held; I thought they were just objects with a silly lore attached.”
“I brought Emilie with me and introduced her to my family. We gave her a tour of our home and the city. The day before she left, I showed Emilie the Miraculouses and the book, along with other family heirlooms. The next morning Emilie was gone, taking with her the book and Peacock Miraculous. I don’t know why she took them, but as I was the one who brought her, it became my duty to retrieve them. Your mother and I fought the day before she disappeared.”
“You lost,” Adrien said. Sabine nodded her head. He had fed Plagg during the time she was speaking, and the Kwami was now hovering beside him, quiet and despondent. Adrien furrowed his brows. “Why didn’t you say anything?”
“I was being honest when I said I didn’t know. Your mother disappeared along with the Miraculouses, so I assumed she had run off with them. When Hawkmoth made his debut, I thought he had taken her. I was powerless with useless information, but then you and Ladybug appeared–the two of you defeated that first akuma–and I knew that the true owner of those Miraculouses was nearby. I took that as a sign that I was no longer needed; I could leave it to the two of you.” Sabine ran a hand through her hair. “Gabriel’s reveal and downfall and Emilie’s sudden reappearance are why I approached her. I was hoping she had answers. I didn’t know…”
Sabine looked up to see Adrien attach the Peacock and Butterfly Miraculouses to his shirt, releasing Nooroo and Duusu from the jewelry. He stood up, but a wave of dizziness washed over him, bringing him to a knee.
Plagg immediately moved to his holder. “Adrien, are you okay?”
“I’m fine, Plagg,” Adrien said, waving the Kwami away. He took a second to regain his bearings before standing up.
Sabine looked between the Kwamis and the boy. Her voice shook as she asked, “What are you planning to do?”
“I’m going to release you,” he said with a jerk of his head. Nooroo and Plagg flew to Sabine and began to untie the ropes, “and then you are going to tell Ladybug to meet me. Tonight.”
Sabine stood up and rubbed her sore wrists. She feared what he would try to do to her daughter, but in her current state she was vulnerable. “Where should I tell her to go?”
Adrien reached into his pocket and pulled out his lucky charm. He held it up to the moonlight, running the memory through his mind. “Tell her to meet me where it all began.”

Miss Fandom Says:
I saw this thing some other tumblr user posted about. They said they wanted a episode of Miraculous Ladybug with like a dodgeball game and Adrien and Marientte just battling it out ya know? And well I want that too so why not write it?
Marientte POV:
I groaned as the bell for gym class. Today was the day my life ended. Today’s dodgeball day.
“Come on Marinette, you’ll be fine!” Alya said to me, practically pulling me off my seat.
“Just look at it this way,” she said while putting her arm around me and leading me toward the door, “If you get hurt, you’ll be sent home.”
She laughed at her little tease and I did too.
We walked to the locker and I dreadfully got dressed. Suddenly, Rose and Juleka walked in frantic.
“Guys!” Rose announced to everyone in the locker room then continued. “I heard coach say to the boys coach that we’re going up against them today. Boys vs. Girls!!”
Everyone seemed to say “WHAT?!” at the same time. Then everyone started talking at once.
I heard Chloe say she didn’t want to break a nail. I heard a couple of girls groan. Then I heard a girl say “Bring it on” and I knew that was Alex.
“Guys! Guys!!!!” Alya suddenly yelled at us to listen. “Let’s not freak out okay? It’s just the boys.”
We all looked at around to each other slowly had an agreement. We were not going to let the boys win.
“So let’s get out there and show them some real girl power!!!!!”
“YAH!” We all yelled and then we all ran out to the gym.
The boys were already out onto the gym floor talking and semi stretching out there arms.
“Hey there’s Nino with Adrien.” Alya pointed out.
I gasped. Adrien Agreste. I forgot he had this gym period too.
“Oh no no no no no. Alya!” I said facing her.
“I cannot play against them. No way. What if I trip and fall and make a complete idiot out of myself. Adrien will think I’m a total loser and never talk to me or like me!! My life is over.” I say in one breath.
She chuckled. “Come on girl! You’ll be fine! Just stay right next to me and you won’t make a fool out of yourself.”
I nodded to her reassuring advice.
“Come on let’s go talk to them.”
Before I could respond Alya was already dragging me towards Adrien and Nino.
“Hey dudes!” She called to them as she dragged me towards the line that separated the guys and girls and where they were standing.
They both looked our way and literally my heart skipped a beat. Adrien Agreste might of been the most handsome boy I have ever laid eyes upon. He was beautiful on the outside and in. And that’s what I love most about him. He’s not what you expect him to be since he is a famous model. You’d expect him to be this snobby rich kid like Chloe, but he’s the opposite.
Dang this boy...
“Hey girls.” Adrien said with a little wave and smile as we arrived at the line seprerating us.
That smile, I thought with a little sigh.
“Are y’all ready?” Alya questioned Nino and Adrien.
“Yah, ready to get crushed by you girls. Honestly we don’t stand a-“
“Wait you think they’re gonna win?” Someone who interrupted Nino suddenly said.
We all looked to who was talking and I wasn’t surprised to see who it was.
Kim.
“I mean no offense but you girls won’t stand a chance against us. Guys are stronger, girls are really meant for cheering us on.”
Alya and I raised our eyebrows.
“Excuse me?” I heard myself say. Everyone looked at me surprised.
“Look, all I mean to say is-“
“No no, we all heard what you said.”- I interrupted. “You think just because we’re girls we can’t beat you? Well let me just tell you something buddy.”-I started walking towards him, over the line, with my finger pointing at him slightly.
“Anything a guy can do, we can do it, too. There is no difference between us besides your- oh.” I stopped abruptly when I thought about what I was going to say. I looked around to see everyone stairing in awe. Some with agreeing faces, some with faces about to laugh to what I was about to say. That made blush with embarrassment, but I kept going.
“Anyways, we’ll see if you should leave the girls to cheering you boys on when we beat you.”
I turned away from him and stomped to Alya smirking at me across the line. I grabbed her arm and pulled her away from the line, and the boys.
“I can’t believe you just did that!” Alya said in amazement once we were farther away from the line. Some girls were surrounding us,joining into the conversation.
“I can’t believe Kim thinks like that.” I said crossing my arms in anger.
“It’s probably just his ego and his fear of losing. But girl that was amazing!”
Some of the girls who joined in were nodding their heads or throwing a “yah”or two.
“Well,-I started to say- “it won’t matter if we don’t beat these boys. We need to win. And I have a plan.”
*****
“Okay ladies and gentlemen!” The guys’s coach blew their whistle to get our attention.
Everyone quieted down.
“We all know the rules to dodgeball. If you get hit, your out. You catch the ball, the person who threw it is out. You can use a ball in your hand to deflect a ball coming at you. And do not cross the line. Or you are out. Understood?” Our coach announced.
“Yes ma’me!” We all yelled.
“Well alright then! Go to ur sides and let’s have a fun, fair game!”
We all ran to our general sides. While running Alya caught up with me and asked,”you sure this is gonna work?”
“As sure as I’ll ever be.” I said to he with an assuring smile.
“Then let’s do this.” We high five each other and she ran ahead.
God I hope this works.
“Everyone! “- the guys’s coach yelled once again-“Grab a ball!”
Everyone started grabbing dogeballs, some people even had two.
I grabbed a ball but went to the back where everyone agreed I go. I can’t get out early in the game. If I do, the plan won’t work.
“Ready?” The coaches said in unison.
Then they blew their whistle, and th floor erupted with flying dodge balls. The plan was into motion: Part 1.
We all agreed Chloe should get out first. First of all she wanted to and second, she said she wouldn’t help if it meant she was going to break a nail. So the first ball that sent casted along to our side, Chloe made sure it hit her. Which was surprising she would even volunteer to be hit with a dodger ball, but I didn’t argue.
Then Rose, who said she’d take one for the team. Followed by Mylene, Sabrina, and Juleka. Who all said they were gonna try to get some boys on the other side. Which they did but they had to get out eventually for the plan to be set into part 2.
Some other girls from other classes in our school said they would get out as much people as they could and then when it was just me and Alya left, they would purposely get out.
The last of the of those girls got out and it was just men and Alya left against Kim and Adrien.
We all looked at each other. Alya and I looked at each other and agreed silently: time for part 3.
I grabbed a ball quickly and threw it at Kim. Surprisingly it wasn’t a bad throw. I guess because of being Ladybug, some of my skill stayed with me as Marientte. But he dodged it with ease.
Alya then picked up her ball and threw it at Adrien. Everyone was looking at them, including Kim. He was distracted.
I had a chance in that second, that one second that Alya started throwing the ball at Adrien. I grabbed a ball and threw it as hard as I could.
It hit Kim on the top of his thick skull. It was silent as Kim fell to the ground. The guys gasped.
All the girls cheered. The entire girls side exploded with cheers and screams of happiness. I couldn’t help myself and yell out a loud “Yes!” in success, too. I turned to Alya, but I came to realize she was out too.
Ok that is the end to that Part . There is going to be a part 2. It’s just I have to write on a new post bc I reached my limit of words on this one I hope y’all enjoy this first part!!!

My Apologies
I’m really sorry for the delay with the next chapter. It’s a tough one to tackle since we’re still working on how everything will fit into the story.
I too, have just begun school again, so I’m having a hard time communicating with NightsongR at the moment. I really apologize for this, since I get really tired after coming home from school. We’ll update you further when we’ve figured this out.
Then again, thank you for your patience for this upcoming chapter.

The Consequences of His Wish
Chapter Sixteen
Chat Noir’s mind barely processed his body’s movement as he threw himself off the Eiffel Tower. The constant revelation of Gabriel Agreste is Hawk Moth ran through his mind. Tucking his limbs tight to his side, he gained distance on the falling man. Screams below flew past him like the wind, cutting into his cheeks. He could see Gabriel’s face, the face revealed behind the hated villain’s mask. His father’s face. Chat Noir gritted his teeth and grabbed him. Flipping himself underneath the two, he extended his pole across them. Ladybug’s yo-yo wound around it, and the two gently swung to safety.
The moment their feet touched the ground, Chat Noir pushed Gabriel away, unable to stand touching the man a moment longer. Ladybug landed next to him, and the two were instantly surrounded by civilians and reporters. He felt Ladybug grab his wrist, but his eyes stayed on the apprehended man before him. Gabriel looked up and their eyes met. The look of indifference left Chat Noir feeling drained. He felt his partner’s fingers squeeze his wrist. That was his cue. Chat Noir grabbed Ladybug as the crowd pushed to the police cruiser and took their chance of escape.
They landed a roof a couple blocks away, safe from the commotion and with a clear view. Chat Noir moved to leave, but Ladybug grabbed his hand.
“Chat Noir,” she said, “we need to talk. The Miraculouses are still out there, and we have no clue as to who could have them.”
“What are you suggesting?” Chat Noir asked. He sat down and watched the retreating flashing blue lights. The crowd dispersed slowly, the grand showdown now over.
Ladybug sat beside him, her mind racing with various emotions sans joy. Her shoulders ached and she could feel the fatigue setting in. Looking over to her partner, she could see the same fatigue in his stature, but his face remained hidden behind his mask. For the first time, Ladybug felt disconnected from her partner. What was he feeling underneath his mask? Could he tell what she was feeling?
With a sigh, Ladybug leaned back on her hands and looked up at the sky. Did she know what she was feeling? “I think tomorrow we should visit Hawk–I mean Gabriel Agreste and speak with him. He may know the identity of the Peacock Miraculous holder.”
“And if he doesn’t?” Chat Noir bit back, finally looking over at his partner. “We don’t know each other’s identities.”
“That’s true, but our ident–”
“Our identities must remain a secret. Yeah… I know, but I want–I need–nevermind.” Chat Noir dug his nails into the fibre shingles and looked back over the city. Ladybug glanced over at him.
“Chat Noir,” she asked, “Are you okay?”
Chat Noir stayed silent. Ladybug sat up and tentatively placed her arm around him. Laying her head on his shoulder, she softly continued, “Everybody else is celebrating because we finally caught Hawk Moth, but I don’t feel like celebrating at all. In fact, I don’t even feel happy. We failed to regain his Miraculous. We tore a small family apart. I’m worried about Adrien.”
“Adrien?” Chat Noir pulled back in surprise, his brow slightly furrowed. “Do you think he had something–”
“N-no,” Ladybug said, shaking her head. “Not at all. I-I’m worried about how he’s doing. He must be having a hard time right now. Do you think I should check on him?”
“I don’t think that’s a good idea.”
Ladybug blinked, taken aback. “W-why not?”
Chat Noir looked at his partner for a second before standing. Offering his hand, he helped Ladybug to her feet. The two stood close together, Chat Noir studying Ladybug’s hand in his. Ladybug tilted her head to see his face, but Chat Noir let go and took a step back. “Do you,” he asked, “really think he wants to see the person that put his father behind bars right now?”
Ladybug felt as if she’d just been punched. She grasped at her words. “I guess not, but I don’t think he wants to be alone. I don’t think he should be alone right now.”
Chat Noir just shrugged and pulled out his baton. “I’ll see you tomorrow bright and early. Milady.”
With a grand bow, Chat Noir disappeared into the night. Ladybug looked after him for a moment before heading home. The two heroes parted ways, and the city of Paris quieted to its usual buzz.
The moon was still shining high in the night sky when Chat Noir returned to his room. He slipped inside, briefly wondering if it would have made a difference coming in through the front door.
“Plagg,” he said, “de-transform me.”
Chat Noir disappeared, and his Kwami was released. Adrien changed clothes and headed towards the bedroom door. Plagg flew in front of Adrien, stopping him. “Hey kid, are you sure you’re okay?”
Adrien brushed Plagg to the side and opened the door. “Not really, Plagg, but I need to see my mother. I’m sure she’s taking this a lot harder than I am.”
Adrien walked away, as Plagg hid, and made his way downstairs. As he reached the bottom, the door to his father’s office opened and his mother walked out. The two stopped upon seeing each other.
Adrien swallowed hard, his voice slightly quivering as he said, “Mom.”
Emilie stared blankly back at him having forgotten he was home. Adrien threw himself into her arms, startling the blonde-haired woman. She awkwardly placed her arms around him.
“There, there,” she said, patting his back. “I know how upset you must be feeling, but he is a self-centered and greedy man. He wanted what wasn’t his, and it ultimately brought about his downfall.”
Adrien looked up at his mom, his cheeks stained red. “How are you handling this so well? I assumed you would be devastated since you were only just reunited with him.”
Emilie brushed a few strands of hair out of his face. “I was very upset when I found out, but I refuse to harbor any feelings toward someone that would endanger who I care about the most.”
“I don’t think father would have intentionally put me in harm’s way. He was very strict when it came to my whereabouts and safety.” Adrien said, pulling back and wiping his eyes.
Emilie cocked her head. “You? Oh yes. And you never know, my precious son, people change.”
Adrien looked behind his mother into the empty room, suddenly noticing the absence of a usually hovering secretary. “Mom, where is Nathalie?”
“She took an extended vacation. Let’s go to bed though. I’m exhausted after today’s events, and I’m sure you are too.”
Gently ruffling his hair, Emilie shuffled around Adrien and headed up the staircase. Adrien looked after his mother until she left his sight. He felt his chest tighten. Plagg flew out and hovered near his head.
“You feel better, Adrien?”
Adrien shoved his hands into his pockets. “No. I don’t know how she’s able to cope so well.”
Plagg trailed after his holder as the two made their way back upstairs. “Maybe it’s like she said, kid. Instead of looking at him as your father, look at him as Hawk Moth, the villain that nearly destroyed Paris and harmed loved ones.”
“I don’t want to look at him only as his alter-ego, Plagg,” Adrien said, flopping onto his bed. “There were two sides to him: Hawk Moth and my father. If I only look at him as Hawk Moth, then that completely erases the side that’s my father.”
The Kwami flew to a neighboring cupboard and rummaged for late night cheese. He pulled out a piece, smelled it, and then put it back. “What’s so different about your father that separates him from Hawk Moth?”
Adrien stayed silent, opting to gaze at his ceiling while his mind wandered. It took him on a trail of thoughts that ended in dead ends and loops and left him tossing and turning all night. When the sun began to shine through his window, Adrien forfeited sleep and got out of bed. Passing Plagg who was clutching half-eaten cheese, he silently got ready while wrestling with his thoughts and growing anxiety.
During his shower, the heat turned almost to the maximum, Adrien rehearsed what he would say to his father when he saw him. While brushing his teeth, he practiced looking nonchalant, Gabriel’s face of indifference seared into his mind as reference. Finally, throughout tussling with his clothes, he tried to come up with an answer to Plagg’s question.
Adrien finished drying his hair and absentmindedly threw his towel on Plagg. The Kwami woke with a start, thrashing around a bit before phasing through the cloth. Adrien winced.
“Sorry, Plagg. I guess I’m just a little distracted.”
The ancient being floated up and assessed his friend. “A little?” he asked. “You look like you didn’t sleep at all last night.”
“I didn’t. I couldn’t. I just kept thinking and–” Adrien ran a hand through his hair and sat down with a frustrated sigh. Plagg flew over and placed his hand on Adrien’s.
“Small steps, Adrien,” he said. “I’ve been on this planet for a long time, kid. You don’t have to do it all at once; take it in small steps, ones that you’re comfortable with. If that means putting off going to visit, then that’s fine. We’ve got time.”
Adrien gave a small smile. “Thanks, Plagg, but I need to go today. There are some things I need to know.”
Plagg conspicuously made his way back to the cheese cupboard. “Are you sure? We can always stay in and–”
“Plagg, transform me.”
With a wail, Plagg was sucked away, bringing out Adrien’s alter-ego: Chat Noir. The blacksuit hero leapt out the window and with a pace that matched his racing heart, made his way to the police station.
Ladybug was already waiting at the front door when he arrived. He strolled up, feeling himself already withdraw. A giant wall seemed to seamlessly slide between him and his partner. She gave him a gentle smile. “Morning, kitty.”
Chat Noir replied with a quick nod of his head. “Ladybug.”
“No witty remark today?” Ladybug asked, nudging him with her elbow. Chat Noir coolly regarded her and opened the door.
“I guess I’m not much of a morning person,” he said. “After you.”
Ladybug’s smile faltered, but she entered the building nonetheless. They were greeted by a jolly round officer with bright red hair. He walked up and shook each of their hands, a wide grin on his face.
“Morning Ladybug, Chat Noir. Lieutenant Raincomprix at your service, but you can call me Roger.”
He motioned for them to his desk, taking a seat only after they sat down. They took in the precinct. It was spacious but filled with bustling staff. Desks were arranged all around, papers stacked high on each one. Roger’s desk was similarly decorated.
“We’re here for Gabriel Agreste. He was arrested last night,” Ladybug said
“Ah yes, Hawk Moth. I was the officer on duty last night and took him in myself.”
Roger puffed out his chest. Chat Noir rolled his eyes. “Where is he?”
“Hawk Moth? He’s–”
Chat Noir stood up, cutting him off. “Where is Gabriel Agreste? We have some questions for him.”
Roger slightly backed up, his eyes narrowing. Ladybug put a hand on Chat Noir’s arm. “What he–we mean to ask,” Ladybug interjected, “is if we could speak with Gabriel Agreste? We would like to question him about the whereabouts of his Miraculous.”
She pulled Chat Noir back in his seat. Roger warily glanced at them before straightening. “We’re under strict no visitation rules until after his court date.”
“Please. It’s very important that we speak with him,” Ladybug pleaded. “If we don’t find the missing Miraculouses, we could end up with another Hawk Moth.”
Roger shuffled through some papers, feigning organization. Ladybug sighed. “If we manage to regain the Miraculouses, I’ll be sure to include how helpful you have been, and how we wouldn’t have been able to recover them if not for your help.”
The Lieutenant paused and sized the two heroes up. “His court date is in five days.”
Ladybug shook her head. “That’s too far from now.”
Roger looked around the room before opening a drawer to his desk. He pulled out a ring of keys and stood up. “You get five minutes. Stay right here. I’ll bring him to an interrogation room.”
“Thank you so much,” Ladybug said, squeezing her partner’s arm until he grumbled out a thanks. Roger nodded and left. Ladybug turned to Chat Noir. “Focus, kitty. We need to try and get as much information out of him as possible. Even the slightest bit can help.”
“What if he refuses to talk? Gabriel Agreste is a stubborn man that does what he wants. Unless he wants to reveal information, he won’t.”
The two watched Roger lead Gabriel into an empty room. They stood up as he passed. Gabriel glanced over at them and quirked an eyebrow before disappearing into the room. Ladybug and Chat Noir shared a look.
“We’ll think of something,” Ladybug murmured, and the two followed after. They entered a dimly lit room, empty save for a table with three chairs. Gabriel sat with his hands chained to the table. Ladybug took a seat opposite from him, Chat Noir opting to lean against the wall.
“I’ll be close,” Roger said referring to the one-way mirror across the room. He closed the door, and a tense silence filled the room.
Gabriel had kept quiet during their entrance, carefully watching their every move. His eyes slid over to Chat Noir, who was regarding him with a mixture of anger and something he couldn’t place. Ladybug cleared her throat.
Displaying his cuffs, Gabriel asked, “Ladybug, Chat Noir, have you come to gloat?”
“No,” Ladybug said, “we need your help.”
“Right. The missing Miraculouses.” Gabriel shrugged and reclined back in his hair, the chains on his wrist clinking. “Apologies, but I can’t help you.”
Ladybug leaned forward. “I think you can. Mr. Agreste, you are an intelligent man. You have to know something.”
Gabriel raised his chin, looking down on the heroine with indifference. Ladybug looked over at Chat Noir for help, but he just shook his head.
Ladybug huffed. “Why are you holding back? You’ve lost. Neither of us have the Miraculous, and it could be in the hands of an even more dangerous villain. Instead of being stubborn, help us get it back.”
“How do you know we aren’t working together?” Gabriel asked, a smirk teasing the end of his lips.
Ladybug gave him a deadpan look, “They tried to murder you by throwing you off the Eiffel Tower.”
“They threw me knowing you would come to my rescue. Like the good little heroes that you are,” Gabriel said mockingly.
Ladybug opened her mouth but Chat Noir grabbed her shoulder. He leaned in and whispered in her ear. Ladybug frowned and tried to turn around, but Chat Noir tightened his grip on her shoulder. Gabriel regarded the interaction lazily. Finally, Ladybug nodded her head and stood up. She threw a glare towards Gabriel and left the room.
“Is this suppose to be good-cop-bad-cop?” Gabriel asked.
Chat Noir took a seat and quietly waited. A second later, his baton began beeping. He slid it open and Ladybug’s voice came out on speaker.
“Chat Noir. You’ve got one minute. That’s all he agreed to do. He said his job would be too much at risk for any longer.”
Chat Noir looked over at the one-way mirror. “And it is only the two of us?”
“Yes. Lieutenant Raincomprix says he is not to be touched.”
“I promise no harm will come to Gabriel Agreste.”
“Chat,” Ladybug said, her voice softer. “I don’t know what you’re planning to do. This is really out of character... but I trust you.”
There was silence for a moment, and then, “Thank you. I’ll be out in sixty seconds.”
Ladybug closed her yo-yo, ending the call. She looked up at Roger, a nervous smile on her face. The man just shook his head and checked his watch. Ladybug listened to the tick tick tick of the clock as the seconds passed.
Exactly sixty seconds later, the door opened and Chat Noir stepped out. He held open the door and gestured them inside. “He’s ready to talk.”
Roger stepped through first, going straight over to check on Gabriel. Ladybug followed, giving Chat Noir a questioning look. He motioned for her to take a seat and then closed the door.
Ladybug took her seat once more across from Gabriel. Folding her hands, she asked, “What can you tell us?”
Gabriel leaned back in his chair. “Her name is Ananta Haine, and now that she’s in possession of the Peacock and the Butterfly, she’ll do anything, sacrifice anyone, to get what she wants.”
