I love the artwork of Hawk Moth as Marinette makes excuses why she can’t take the school trip to London.  He looks like The Red Skull.  Or a Large-mouth bass.

Re-watching startrain rn and I'm so annoyed, the episode was ok and all but there was a massive missed opportunity to have a sort of role reversal thing where ladybug and chat noir never got the chance to transform or something, but we instead got hawk moth trying to stop the train. Like it would have been a bit confusing but there must have been something good to do with that concept. Missed opportunity, plus it would have been nice to see proof that Gabriel is still caring for his son n all.

The show made such a big deal about Ladybug leaving Paris for a week-end in Hack-San without informing Cat Noir beforehand and yet it never said anything about Cat Noir never telling Ladybug that he's gonna leave Paris for a week-end in Backwarder ... or that he's supposed to leave Paris for a few weeks in the S4 finale ... or that he's supposed to move out of Paris permanently in S5. The hypocrisy seems palpable.
In my opinion, it's actually not hypocrisy. At least, it's not hypocrisy in the grand scheme of things. When you look at the series as a whole, it turns out that this is just another case of inconsistent writing because the show does punish Chat Noir for leaving without warning Ladybug, but only when the plot needs to punish him. Let's go over the facts in chronological order!
In the Shanghai special, Ladybug and Chat Noir both leave Paris without warning each other or Master Fu and it's not just fine, it's the right move as they're magically where they need to be for the fight of the day. Neither one of them gets mad at the other for their actions. The issue isn't even brought up.
In Backwarder, Chat Noir leaves Paris without warning Ladybug and it's treated as a non-issue.
In Startrain, Ladybug and Chat Noir both leave Paris without warning each other, but Marinette visits Fu first and gets the horse miraculous so that she's okay to leave. When she learns that Chat Noir left without warning her, she doesn't seem even remotely phased.
In the New York special, Chat Noir leaves Paris without warning Ladybug. This is Very Bad as Paris was left undefended and he knew that was going to be the case. This is a fair critique at face value, but Ladybug is the guardian at this point and has instant access to the horse miraculous, thereby negating the issue, a fact that is never discussed. Fun fact: this is the only instance in the entire series where one of them bothers to tell the other when they're leaving Paris.
In Hack-San, Ladybug leaves Paris without warning Chat Noir and it understandably causes tension, but Chat Noir ends the episode absolving her of any guilt even though she could have transformed and left him a message to warn him that she's assigned a temp hero her Miraculous. A thing we know they can do since this season literally starts with Ladybug playing messages from Chat Noir on her bug phone. She's also the guardian at this point, so she could have taken the horse with her and teleported back or even just taken the horse in case Alya ran into trouble. (Do you see how the lack of consistency just builds and builds the more they ignore established logic?)
The last few episodes of season five see Chat Noir fully aware that he's being shipped off to London and then actually getting shipped off to London, a change that he never informs Ladybug of even though she will now be truly alone. The show never addresses this and treats it as a non issue.
As far as I can recall, those are all of the instances where this issue could have potentially come up along with the various ways the writing handled the issue. As you can see, both Ladybug and Chat Noir behave recklessly when it comes to leaving Paris. They pretty much never let each other know when it's happening, but whether or not that's a bad thing is entirely dependent on what plot the writers want to tell. So hypocrisy on the writer's part, sure, but I'm not gonna give Chat Noir that label when Ladybug is arguably equally deserving.
This isn't as egregious as lore inconsistencies like the way split up amoks and akumas work, but it's still a very clear case of establishing rules and then ignoring them because the writers do what they want! Who needs narrative consistency and good world building?

Big Brain Idea:
Confirmed info:
Hawkmoth cannot send out more than one Akuma at once (minus when using Catalyst to become Scarlet Morh)
Outside of a certain range, Hawkmoth cannot control his Akuma (source: s3, Startrain)
Akumas can be trapped in a jar and not be able to escape (source: s5, Representation)
The idea:
After a battle, instead of purifying the Akuma, Ladybug should trap it in a jar then send it to the moon with the Horse miraculous. Boom! No more Akumas :D

While I am at complaining about the supporting characters treatment in the show, may I speak about Sabrina.
Sabrina who is forced by the show to stay stagnant in abused and toxic position without revaluating her situation for 4,5 seasons,
after the protagonist attempts reaching out to her and explain she deserves a healthy friendship ("Evillustrator");
after her father loses his job on Chloe's whim ("Rogercop");
after Chloe repays her with open ingratitude and cruelty, breaking her heart, causing her akumatization ("Antibug"), and after it happens again ("Miraculer");
(And in both these cases her return to Chloe is framed as POSITIVE thing)
after she becomes a superhero ("Penalteam");
after she is akumatized because of Chloe's cruelty again but this time as purposeful manipulation by Chloe to force her akumatized self to participate in a crime of framing a person ("Adoration");
and then decided to rebel only when she is being forced to ruin 10 teens' career, but mostly because the plot demanded it ("Confrontation")... still better than nothing I guess.
Sabrina the only kid in the class whose first "akuma episode" is just an opening of another person's akuma episode (Chloe's, to be precise) and not even named after her;
(And whose second akuma episode is a Chloe-centric episode again, and whose third akuma episode is kind of Chloe-centric and kind of Zoe-centric)
Sabrina who has, like, several minutes of screen time in her superhero debut episode (that is, through, a misfortune she shares in "Penalteam" with Ivan, Nath, Marc, and also Kim in "Party Crasher");
Sabrina the only hero in the team who is replaced after one outing despite not even doing anything wrong as a hero or any explanation (in Season 4 finale Ladybug introduces Flairmidable as PERMANENT new Dog);
(And it remains completely unnoticed. Care to compare with the infamous Queen Bee retirement drama?)
Sabrina on whose personality the story cannot decide other than "she is Chloe's underling"(how willing to be a petty nuisance is she? What are her beliefs and values? Depends on the episode. What are her skills? Whatever the episode demands. Interests?...I suppose football was mentioned once).
Whose father's personality is retconned from protecting justice and people's rights despite corruption of superiors ("Rogercop") to approving of his daughter's rightless position and humiliation ("Startrain").
And whom being abused the story's deuteragonist (himself an abuse victim, mind you) is watching in enjoyment ("Lies").
And about whom the author has the gut to accuse VIEWERS of not caring about her enough.

Watching the last two animed Asterix films and reading (well, listening to) Edouard Louis has left me with thoughts about how Paris so often feels like an entirely separate entity from the country of France. And it's one thing for that to be the case with fiction and in the stereotypes projected from knowing a place from books and news reports only, but Louis' description goes a long way to back up this impression, that if you aspire to be Something then its Paris or bust
it's exaggarated, of course, and I'm speaking with the expertise of having been to France a whole three times and the only time I set a foot outside Paris was during a pit stop on some godforsaken petrol station. (and an afternoon in Strassbourg but I was living in Germany which means it doesn't count)
But when Miraculous Ladybug re-plays the French Revolution over the office of the mayor of Paris, the separation is complete. In the MLB universe, Paris is France and the country does not exist outside the city borders. Other countries exist, both as real setting and as destinations for transport, but the country of France is never seen. Even in the NYC special, we cut straight from a bus to the interior of the plane taking the class to New York. There are no buses leaving the city of Paris, the only railway route is the Startrain to London. We have no kids from other parts of the country but we do have several children from other countries moving in.
I'm not even going to try to say something smart about this illustration of centralisation taken to the extreme, but it's... something. If I cared enough I'd do some probably useless comparisons to how Tokyo is the epicentre of everything in anime, but even here it tends to be either centred on some specific part of Tokyo, and other countries are so irrelevant that the geographic myopia doesn't look as weird as this one does. Because arguably it's not only France that has disappeared, but the entire continent of Europe, now reduced to "Italiy exists".

Honestly I never understood why people keep insisting Zoe is the better miraculous user since we never actually see her do anything beyond running or jumping towards someone to use the Venom even in her hero debut
Yeah like. Zoé's moveset has been very basic. Run and jump to use Venom.
Chloé, on the other hand, did more direct combat scenes. We had her taking on multiple Akumas during Heroes' Day, and we had her go 1v1 with Mayura in Miraculer. Not to mention other Heroic actions, like helping out Ladybug as a civilian and even Startrain my beloved where she was the most qualified person to handle the emergency and did so beautifully helping save people.

What's your opinion about the temporary heroes?
I think they're VERY unnecessary, especially once the unification being introduced as literally as a way to use 2+ powers at the same time, not mixing the powers to create other one, some just have miraculous bc yes(half of them, actually),if there's going a actual miraculous i think it should be the top 5(7 at the end)to keep the things okay, season 2 baby,yk you are the best?
I do agree. Ultimately, they were pointless to do and were the wrong choice of direction.
A big part of it is that unification reveal, all those Miraculous Fu has could've been shared between Marinette and Adrien. Also, Hawk Moth is not a big enough threat to the heroes to warrant expanding the team. Why, the one time they did a "Miraculous Team" it fell apart in minutes. And it still came down to Marinette and Adrien to save the day.
By this narrative, there's no good reason to share Miraculous with others and do temp heroes as Marinette and Adrien are confirmed by the narrative is that they themselves are all they need. And a lot of the episodes with temp heroes getting focus, could be solved by the heroes doing a unify instead, like Pegabug could've appeared in... what Startrain? Marinette could've become Dragonbug to fight Hearthunter, there was no need for her to go out of her way to go get Kagami.
Also some temp heroes were pointless. You could cut Carapace out of Anansi and not miss much. He's also not the only solution to Anansi's web. A burning candle could've taken it out, or Chat could've Catacysmed the web. Ladybug's yo-yo could've been sharp enough to cut it.
Carapce wasn't really all that needed for Anansi.
From what I remember, Vesperia was also pretty pointless in her intro ep, especially as she got knocked out pretty quick. You take her out, only thing you miss is Chloe getting upset that someone else has the Bee, which isn't going to be exclusive to Zoe.
If they were to expand the team, they need to up the threat. And as HM himself doesn't cover that, that could've been done with Mayura.
The other factor is that, doing temp heroes, skips out on needed character growth, and skips out on kwamis being characters. Like, if Alya was a full time hero instead of temp, there's a lot you could do with that.
You can cover Alya struggling to juggle her now double life, cause she's living the dream as a hero! Why would she want to go back to the dull, drab civilian life? This could be a better way to work off Lila alienating Marinette at school cause Alya is living the dream as a hero and isn't paying attention to her civilian life too much. It could even explain her being dismissive of Marinette and her views of Lila cause she's not there enough to see the details.
You can also cover the risk vs reward of reveal vs secrecy, as both sides should have pros and cons to them. And it is a canon issue with Alya that she wants to unmask the heroes, and she's up for a reveal and share that she's a hero. If Marinette represents the pros and cons of secrecy, Alya can cover the pros and cons of a reveal.
And there are other aspects that canon has introduced to work off of. Like, Alya trying to pick the perfect hero name during an akuma attack, showing she's not taking things as seriously as she should. There's her eager for public attention. That being a hero is more for ego and glory, and she can learn that being a hero is a lot more serious and harder and to see if she has what it takes to step up to the plate.
And of course, what Miraculous and kwami she's paired with can influence how she could've grown.
Mindful, all Miraculous by default would work off that secrecy vs reveal, but Fox would specifically really cover that as it's tied to deception and secrecy. It's also set to be a struggle for Alya because she WANTS to be in the limelight, she aims for leadership and to be directly involved, and Fox isn't built for that, it's built to be in the background. Which can help her growth, but can also clash with where she wants to be.
Bee meanwhile has a good few similar appeals for Alya as it does for Chloe. Alya does have similar issues to Chloe in being literally pushy, taking over projections, pushing her agenda, aiming for leadership but not always being the best leader, and can be oblivious to others, their feelings, and any backlash she's causing. Bee ideally could help her learn to ease back, be a team player; and it has the bonus of allowing Alya to be where she wants to be, and can offer some leadership skills to develop, and work on communication and listening.
Over all, the temp heroes were a bad and pointless choice. The narrative doesn't warrant expanding the team as Marinette and Adrien hardly struggled against HM, and the s2 fianle actually discourages it. It skips out on needed character development and allowing kwamis to be characters. And, honestly, not all characters warrant getting a Miraculous.
Max I could get cause he did step up in Robustus. Juleka I can get cause she's set up to learn confidence, find her voice, and has a lot of bottled up emotions to let loose. I could even get Ivan as in Origins, everyone is kinda terrified of him because of his size, so there could've been an arc to change that view, someone who's feared to becoming a hero, become associated with safety instead.
But what's up with Alix to really warrant a Miraculous? Mylene didn't want one and yeah I don't think she really needed one. It's even more wild as I feel like the power to shrink down would just make her anxieties worse. What about Marc who's barely a character? Is the bar so low that you just have to be good at sports?
Yeah, temp heroes aren't worth it nor were they needed. They were a bad choice of direction.

Bethany's Bizarre Miraculous Reviews: The New York Special
New York! New York! It's a Fuck of a town! The Bronx is up but the Battery's down! I was spooked by it when I went there in the summer of 2017-ound! New York! New York! It isn't a town!
(It's a city.)
(Also I heard Alya and Nino did a big no-no here so I'll keep my eyes out.)
Oooh! Big new Fancy Opening!
Good introduction, silly stuff with Mr. Pigeon, New suits that I'll talk more about in season 5, etc.
Green typically represents jealousy, Chat. It's good to see you trying to befriend Ladybug instead of flirting with her, though.
Also good ego. It's hard to balance your ego from experience.
And of course Marinette harshly simps for Adrien when it's a detriment to her. Do the salters live in backwards land or something? Chat Noir isn't perfect but he has more respect for Ladybug's boundaries. He doesn't sniff Ladybug's pillow, and I doubt he would even if he knew where she lived.
Sock puppetry lmao
Chloe, shouldn't you be happy about going to New York? You wanted to move there with the Karen that birthed you.
Get disrespected lmao
I love through that sock-filled monologue Marinette implied Lila wasn't their friend. Then again, considering my belief that more of the class is sus of Lila than Marinette,
Yes! Marinette's actually letting go! Or at the very least trying to! Forget what I said earlier. Baby steps, baby steps.
I'm assuming Ladybug's taking the Horse Miraculous with her again like with Startrain. Also the Kitty toy alarm's so cuute!
Dramatic irony lmao "Do you see a supervillain in the house?"
I'm also glad we're getting Luka and Kagami content, even if they aren't going on the trip.
Adrien's dad is coming! And I think he's afraid of flying!
Oh god. This relationship is an agony of cringe. Also quit encouraging it, Alya. Even Rose seems to be for Marinette changing seats and she's an utter romantic.
He is afraid of flying.
Sleep cute. I love it. And the ships too.
Oh no. Alya, Nino, don't do it. Marinette and Adrien are better off as friends. Don't do what I think you're going to do.
He doesn't look that much like a pirate. Aren't supervillains supposed to have more swag than this? Maybe he's just a villain.
Oh yeah. The Miraculous isn't the only magic (in an abstract literary sense) in this verse. There's also superheroes. And all the other Zagtoon shows.
Adrien and Marinette are made for eachother in the same way water and cesium is.
They're really trying to tell me Sabrina is bi and into some guy she just met? I could probably believe the bi part, actually, but only if she uses her love language: acts of service pushed to the extreme.
The mischevious
They're really trying to act as if Sabrina isn't approx. as evil as Chloe and pushing this relationship with what looks like a background character?
Hot Dog superhero whose hot dogs empower others. This is objectively the best superhero I've seen.
Fuck it. I'll take this. There's Julerose in this slow dancing scene. Look on the bright side of life.
Doors! Doors! Doors! Doors!
Oh. So it's the teenaged American heroes suggesting that. Oh. Alya's more innocent than thought. She's still into it, though.
Why is Uncanny Valley's superhero design so white? And just looks like that in general? Sparrow's is cool and practical, though.
There's the piracy! I was looking for that!
Why did Techno Pirate only steal her third eye? She's 100% technology! Oh. He just couldn't.
Ladybug, quit distracting Chat Noir. He fully did not expect this.
Oh. Chat Noir had time, he was just anxious or something. Yeah. I get it now. Ladybug has the right to be pissed.
So it was an accidental killing. And she was only corroded, not dusted.
What is with these assholes? Technolyzer or whatever his name was the one that forced Chat Noir to cataclysm Uncanny Valley, and yet they're blaming Ladybug and Chat Noir?
Reused sewer model
No, Chat, she would've been fine no matter what. The Miraculous Big Bang undoes death. It undoes erasure from existence.
This feels forced. Too forced.
...Is that her civilian model? And at least someone's getting consequences for trying to force Adrienette.
This is a joke. That sopping wet cat breakup is a joke. Marinette's unfaithfulness is a joke. The superheroes under liberation are jokes. Why is Miracalyzer or whatever his name is making someone want to take people's freedoms away? Oh right. We got this much Julerose content in an absolute joke of a special. Cursed irony.
Alright, the orchestral reprise of Chat Noir's transformation was pretty cool, I'll admit. He's back!
Miracolonizer? Is that his name?
So was Adrien's dad just listening to stuff in his room this whole time?
And was this trip that short?
And all the VAs were dehydrated at the time due to production fuckery and a constrained schedule?
Tumblr media
So that's what that fic was talking about. It was a Julerose fic as well. Marinette was dating Luka and Adrien was dating Kagami at the time of this special. No mention of polyamory. They were making her cheat. This is Luka disrespect. This is Kagami disrespect. Alya, what the fuck? Also the other plot stuff was just My Hero Academia again, and I hate My Hero Academia.
Edit: So apparently Adrien was told he's going to New York right as he was leaving. So it wasn't his fault.

Unforgotten - ML Oblivio AU
When the Miraculous Cure restores everyone's memories, Ladybug and Chat Noir realize that their post-amnesia memories from the past hour were not erased. As such, they remember each other’s identities, falling in love without preconceived notions and baggage, and their kiss.
How things change from then on:
Ladybug panics and stammers as she tries to process the revelation. Chat is calmer as he processes what happened, but seeing his partner devolve into nervous stammering and gibberish makes him connect "Oh, yeah, this is definitely Marinette." When they get back onto the bus, they sit together rather than Mari + Alya and Adrien + Nino, and they talk things out (and then meet back up in costume later to go into what they couldn't say around their classmates).
They start dating, in and out of costume. They tell Alya and Nino that they had gotten stuck together and were both hit by Oblivio and so hit it off with a fresh start. They have a similar explanation prepared to share in a Ladyblog interview for their superhero identities. Needless to say, Alya and Nino are proud that their joint Akumatization at least brought this to fruition.
Realizing they have to do it sooner or later, Marinette and Adrien visit Master Fu to tell him that they still know each other’s identities, and plead with him not to take away their Miraculouses.  Fu agrees, admitting that he never had any intention of enforcing the rule.  The Kwamis are very relieved to be able to move forward without having to deal with the “love square” nonsense.
When faced with Desperada, Ladybug gives the Snake Miraculous to Luka immediately. Marinette and Adrien also realize that while they are dating each other now, they still care deeply about Luka and Kagami, respectively.
Startrain is pretty much the same (they don't need to excuse their presence from each other, though). However, when Lila tries to intrude on Marinette and Adrien napping together, Alya takes note, as she is trying to come between the couple, and starts to consider that Lila may not be the total saint she thought she was.
Ladybug and Cat do not have to throw each other off of the trail of their identities, but they do have to come up with a way to distract Ms. Mendeleiev and Hawk Moth from realizing that they attend Collège Françoise Dupont.
Marinette texts Adrien and tells him about the Sentimonster at the museum. Bouncing back and forth, they realize that Hawk Moth and Mayura might know about it, and they expect the villains to try to make use of it rather than trust it will remain dormant. They set a trap for Mayura, recruiting the other heroes for the fight. The Sentimonster is still freed, but Ladybug prevents Hawk Moth from Akumatizing it. They fail to capture Mayura, but they are able to destroy the Sentimonster and restore everything it consumed. Master Fu does not try to take the Miraculouses back and flee, and Hawk Moth does not learn what he looks like. In the meantime, recruiting Chloé along with the other heroes builds her faith in Ladybug back up as she realizes that Ladybug still has faith in her, making her betrayal less likely to happen.
Since the Shanghai special does not have a set point in time, I'll put it at the beginning of a stretch of episodes in which the cast does not attend school (from Ikari Gozen to Puppeteer 2), as it is said to be at the start of break. In this chapter, Marinette genuinely has an interest in exploring her cultural background and Chinese heritage when she volunteers to visit her great-uncle for his birthday, rather than wanting to stalk Adrien. It happens that Adrien is in Shanghai at the same time and she plans to surprise him while out searching for ingredients, but then she is pickpocketed.
Without their romantic rivalry, Marinette is eager to get to know Kagami better, and she does not try to sabotage her during the Friendship Game. However, tensions still arise as she is confused and put off by Kagami's strange behavior (due to not knowing how to make friends). Either Kagami finds out about Marinette's video chats with Alya addressing the confusion and becoming upset, or she is not nearly Akumatized at all (either way, Tomoe is still Akumatized and Kagami becomes Ryuko).
After meeting Bunnyx and learning that they will still have threats to face in the future, Cat reflects on what Tom Dupain said about how he could retire after defeating Hawk Moth, and he talks to Ladybug about how he does not want to quit being a superhero.  Ladybug agrees.
I would have Puppeteer 2 be the recap episode of the season rather than Stormy Weather 2. The wax museum would be a good setting for the cast to reflect on past adventures and character development.
Miracle Queen does not happen.  Marinette does not suffer from confusion about her love life and watching Adrien and Kagami grow closer, so she brings Chloé the Bee Miraculous to help against Heart Hunter.  She also remembers to change back to Marinette when she heads to find Master Fu (she is in the subway when she gets the Lucky Charm, so she just finds a place to change back and heads to the park without either Hawk Moth or Mayura even beginning to pursue her.  Chloé does not betray Ladybug and Cat Noir, and Hawk Moth and Mayura do not capture Master Fu, so Fu does not (yet) pass on the role of Guardian and Hawk Moth does not learn the identities of the other heroes.

Lady In Red
Chapter 4. Puzzle pieces
Read on AO3
[1] [2] [3]
2,747 words
"Earth to Adrien. Hello! Are you alright, kid?"
"Mmm?" Adrien asked absentmindedly, still tapping his chin with his fingers.
"Oh Lord, you both are so silly, you and your ladylove," Plagg sighed in frustration. "Gross! I can't bear all the lovey-dovey stuff and the heart eyes! I need my Camembert!"
While Plagg was munching a slice of Camembert, Adrien returned to his thoughts.
Could it be that Marinette was the love of his life? he asked himself.
He was the kind of guy who always listened to his heart. And now it was telling him he was right. So many things started making sense, clicking together like puzzle pieces.
He thought back to the day not so long ago, when the new ad was filmed at the pool. Marinette was there, and Adrien got so confused about the way he felt that he bumped his head against the car because he couldn't take his eyes off her.
And that day at Musée Grevin, when Marinette tried to kiss him while thinking he was a statue? This almost kiss affected him like an exploding bomb. The way he was freaking out afterwards was only comparable to the day his heart started beating for Ladybug—a real coup de foudre, that is.
That day at the ice rink—if he was being perfectly honest, he wasn't quite sure that what he felt back then upon seeing Marinette in Luka’s arms wasn't jealousy.
The way his heart was melting in his chest whenever he and Marinette slow danced together.
The warmth that filled his entire being when they cuddled together in the Startrain (he felt the same warmth filling him again at the very thought of Marinette pressing her head to his chest like a sleeping kitten).
The way he completely forgot how to breathe, and this is all due to seeing Marinette with her hair down.
And last but not least, the way he felt when Marinette confessed her love to Chat Noir out of nowhere. And although he rejected her, he still felt things.
No, this reverie will lead him nowhere.
Adrien had to make an effort to shake off the daydreams and think more clearly.
What if his heart was wrong? After all, he did not have enough proof. That's what his brain kept telling him.
Adrien rubbed his temples to get his thoughts in order. Then he captured a paper sheet and started scribbling down hastily:
"1. Ladybug wasn't there when Marinette had a birthday date with Evillustrator.
2. Marinette wasn't available when Ladybug attended the Nadja Chamack talk show. Alya was babysitting Manon for her, as she mentioned in her video call.
3. Marinette hid her mask during the filming of the music video for Clara Nightingale, just like I did, in order to avoid being recognised as a superhero.
4. The way Ladybug always seemed to despise Chloé.
5. Ladybug happened to be in New York at the same time as our class did.
6. The way how quickly my letter was delivered to Ladybug. It makes a lot of sense if Alya really is a confidant of Ladybug’s identity.
7. Both girls recently broke up with their boyfriends and are avoiding them now."
"What are you writing so fervently, kid?" Plagg asked suspiciously. "A new sappy poem to your lady in red?"
"Not really", Adrien answered absentmindedly.
He re-read what he had just written and sighed disappointedly.
All of this felt too far-fetched. That proved nothing. He was just clutching at straws.
These were indirect proofs that could be easily debunked by the mere fact that he once saw Ladybug and Marinette side by side.
Yeah, it happened only once, yet it was real.
The day madame Mendeleïev was akumatized and robbed them of their kwamis.
The memorable day he almost figured out Ladybug's identity to be… Marinette.
The day Marinette temporarily wielded almost all the miraculous.
Adrien's throat suddenly went totally dry.
Stop it, Adrien, he internally berated himself.
It might have been just a figment of his imagination. Just a coincidence. Just wishful thinking. Maybe he just really wanted it to be true.
Because if he were to be reasonable and rely on nothing but logic, there was no way Marinette could be Ladybug.
He was now sure that he was the guy Ladybug had been in love with all along.
But Marinette wasn't in love with him! Never has been. She had said so herself multiple times. She liked him as a friend, not as a love interest.
And the more Adrien thought of this, the duller the world around him was getting.
"What is it now, loverboy? Can't tell a good rhyme for "eyes"? You can try "french fries" or whatever."
Plagg's voice again. Adrien must have zoned out for a moment.
Adrien got up and started fumbling around in the desk drawer. It might be his last hope.
There it was—the love letter he got for Valentine's Day, which he believed to be from Ladybug.
And there was also that note from Marinette saying she would see him again tomorrow at school.
Adrien stood up and went to the window, staring into the distance.
It would be fine if he could get a sample of Ladybug’s handwriting.
Because, as nice as it was, the love letter still wasn't enough of a proof. It might've been just wishful thinking that the letter was from Ladybug.
Should he ask her about it when she comes next time?
"Drop it, kid! Just stop!"
Adrien looked up, completely dumbfounded.
Plagg was floating around in the air, holding the paper sheet Adrien had just covered with his thoughts on Ladybug's identity.
"Plagg, what are you do—"
"It's me who should be asking you what you're doing. But I already can see that."
Adrien scowled.
"Give it back to me, you sneaky cat!"
"Here, you can have it." Plagg scoffed, dropping the paper right into Adrien's extended hand. "Look, I see what you're trying to do here, and I don’t like it, like at all."
"Why not?" Adrien asked, staring with wide eyes at his kwami.
"Are you kidding me? Because trying to figure out Ladybug's identity will lead to nothing good, that's why. You know that all too well, boy," Plagg grumbled in a granddad's preachy tone.
"Do you mean I might be on to something, don't you?" Adrien asked mischievously.
"I didn't say that!" Plagg burst out. "Don't try to put words in my mouth!"
The room went quiet as a grave.
"Okay, kid, let's be reasonable," Plagg said a moment later in a much milder voice. "Don't try to investigate who is behind the mask. You know it's a big no-no. Period. And also, make sure to destroy this list by the time your lovebug drops by next time."
"Fine!" Adrien said with a joyless chuckle, crumpling up the paper and slipping it into his pocket, while Plagg occupied himself with another hunk of cheese.
***
"C'mon, spill it, girl! I won't let you go without hearing all the details".
Marinette was sitting at her sewing machine, crafting a new hat.
"I don't have much to say," Marinette said with a shrug.
"But our boy looks like he was born again. You can't tell me that nothing happened between you two!" Alya exclaimed joyfully, and her glasses flashed in the ray of sunshine streaming in through the window.
Marinette reluctantly turned away from the sewing machine.
"Well, we were just sitting on his bed crying and talking about our broken hearts, that's all".
"Is that really all?" Alya asked incredulously, leaning in so close that her nose almost brushed Marinette’s.
"Not really." Marinette answered, turning immediately the colour of the setting sun.
"Oh, really? What else? I'm dying to know." Alya said eagerly.
"We… uhm… kissed," Marinette articulated as her voice dropped gradually to a barely audible whisper.
"On the lips? Is it true?" Alya gasped, her eyes as big as saucers.
Marinette nodded silently.
"I knew it, I knew it!" Alya cried out, her fist shooting triumphantly into the air. "And what’s now? Our lovebirds are together, aren't they?"
"Yes, kind of," Marinette confirmed, rubbing the back of her neck, her voice returning to its normal volume. "He said I could come whenever I wanted. And then we kissed again."
"Oh Lord, how romantic! Rose would be over the moon to hear that!" Alya cooed, but then she remembered something.
"By the way, I have to make an interview with you to keep your cover." She informed. And upon seeing Marinette’s perplexed expression, she quickly explained: "I told Adrien the other day that I got to know about your feelings for him while making an interview with you for the Ladyblog. He might be getting suspicious if the said interview never comes out."
"Then I have to check my schedule. Maybe I can accord you some time later this evening," Marinette responded, and they both laughed.
"Wait, I'm not done with the news yet." Alya went on. "There will be a birthday party taking place on the Liberty this Sunday. It's Juleka's birthday. You're invited too. Don't you dare miss it."
"A birthday party? That's cool! I'm all in!" Marinette exclaimed ecstatically, turning back to the sewing machine.
She had hardly made two stitches when she started realising something.
"Wait a minute, Alya Césaire! What did you just say? The Liberty? Weren't we supposed to go to the movies?"
"We were, but the plans have changed. We all agreed that throwing a party on the pirate ship would be much cooler." Alya shrugged nonchalantly.
Marinette narrowed her eyes.
"I can smell a trap."
"What trap? What are you talking about?" Alya said, batting her eyes innocently.
"You know perfectly well what I'm talking about! Luka will be there, too, since it's his birthday as well."
"Uhm… Yes, and what of it?" Alya said, still feigning ignorance.
"I know what you are trying to do. You want to trick me into talking to him since I started avoiding him."
"Gotcha!" Alya exclaimed, snapping her fingers. "You basically admitted that you are avoiding Luka."
"What?.. No, I'm not! It's not that!" A totally red Marinette covered her face with her palms so that only flaming red ear tips could be seen. "Alya, you can’t do that to me," Marinette begged miserably from behind her palms. "I can't do this. It will be super awkward."
"But how do you call what you are doing now?" Alya retorted, slamming her fists to her hips. "It's ridiculous, utterly ridiculous! You cause everyone around you unnecessary trouble. Even Adrien noticed you were avoiding Luka. It needs to stop!"
At the mention of Adrien Marinette surrendered.
"Okay, you won. I'll be there. But I can't promise that I'll talk to Luka."
"That's my girl!" Alya said way more softly than just a minute ago. "I knew that common sense would triumph. There's no need to overcomplicate your life, Marinette. It's overly complicated as it is." She patted Marinette’s back reassuringly.
***
Marinette was turning over in her mind the encounters Ladybug had with Adrien in the past.
She gets distracted by his marvellous green eyes looking at her from the limo window, his mouth agape in awe.
He blushes slightly as they awkwardly greet each other at the TV studio.
He rushes to her rescue when Riposte is about to stab her.
He can't bring himself to so much as touch her shoulder, retracting his hand halfway.
He pulls his hand away as soon as he realises that his hand is on her shoulders.
He latches desperately onto her after his akumatized bodyguard throws him off the skyscraper, the look in his eyes telling her more than any words ever could.
Love, respect, and admiration for her came through in all his doings.
So then, he'd been in love with her all along.
And that tender love poem he wrote for Valentine's Day was for her.
Marinette wondered how he was going to get the love letter delivered to her. Would he have asked Alya to do it for him? Or would he have been standing outside all day long, waiting for her to pass by?
She couldn't fight back a giggle at the thought.
Maybe the reason he ended up throwing the letter in the trash can was exactly that he didn't come up with a plan to deliver it.
But the girl it was addressed to got it nonetheless and loved it so, so much.
She rummaged through her things in a desk drawer until she found what she'd been looking for—a crumpled paper sheet covered with Adrien's neat handwriting.
She knew the content of the paper sheet by heart.
Marinette let out a lovesick sigh.
She longed to see Adrien. She couldn't resist the urge to melt into his embrace and hear his comforting words. She had to see him right now.
She got up abruptly.
"Tikki, transforme-moi."
***
It was a matter of a few minutes to reach his house and find him standing at the window of his room, as if he were waiting for her.
"Adrien!"
***
As soon as they pulled apart after a particularly long kiss, Adrien suddenly said, scratching the back of his neck:
"May I ask you something, Ladybug?"
After having gotten a nod of approval, Adrien pulled out a pink-coloured piece of paper from his pocket.
"Was that you who wrote this?"
Ladybug turned bright red so quickly, as if someone had pushed a button inside of her.
She recognised the heart-shaped Valentine's Day card immediately. The silly, sappy love poem she sent him a while ago but forgot to sign.
No matter how embarrassed she was about having written it, there was no use denying the truth.
"Yes, I… Yes, it was me," she mumbled, lowering her gaze to examine the black spots on her hands. "Did you… did you like it?" She dared a question after what seemed like an eternity, cringing at the sound of her own voice, which suddenly became too thick for her liking.
"Yes, I liked it a lot." Adrien's voice was as soft as marshmallows. "It wasn’t signed, so I always hoped it was from you. I'm so glad I guessed it right."
Ladybug didn't expect this. She looked up to see such a loving look in his eyes and such a heartfelt smile on his lips that she could barely resist the urge to kiss him senseless.
Adrien reached out his hand and touched her cheek, giving her goosebumps. Then he leaned in and placed a kiss on her forehead.
"Ladybug," he said. "This is the best letter I've ever gotten in my life."
Ladybug felt a rush of warmth flood her chest.
How could someone be so kind and gentle? He kept the postcard so dearly, as if it were the most precious thing in the world, just because he thought it was from her. He really loved her so much!
He was perfect! She found herself falling in love with him more and more.
Ladybug cuddled closer to him, and he hugged her tenderly in response.
"I love you so much, Adrien," she murmured into his chest. "You're so kind and so generous."
Adrien said nothing, pulling her closer to him.
"Did you know that your cousin Félix once tried to kiss me against my will?" She continued after having relished his closeness for a while.
Adrien stiffened.
"He did what?"
"I immediately knew it couldn’t have been you because I know you'd never do something like that." She continued in between kisses to his cheek.
Ladybug could feel Adrien's hands on her back balling into fists. He murmured something suspiciously similar to "I'll kill him".
"Don't you worry," she said, placing a soothing hand on his arm. "He got what he deserved—a good punch in the face."
Adrien chuckled a dry, short chuckle.
"You should have told me ages ago." He said, looking her straight in the eyes.
Ladybug smiled fondly at him.
"What would it be good for? I managed to handle it on my own. At least now I know that I won't ever mistake him for you again."
She was silenced with an ardent kiss from Adrien.
Her mind immediately went completely blank, and right now she wouldn't want it any other way. Shadow Moth and Félix be damned. As long as she had Adrien by her side (and Alya and Chat Noir, of course), she was sure she could make it.

Rewatching ML Season 3
Chameleon: Adrien pulls away from Lila. He’s very nice to her, but tells her not to lie to him. Akumatised Lila pretends to be mean Adrien. Chat Noir yet again sacrifices himself for Ladybug. Only Marinette and Adrien don’t fall for Lila’s lies. Adrien sit next to Marinette, but the whole class ends up sitting as they used to.
Animaestro: “Ladybug PV” as in-universe film. Marinette, why are you stupid enough to work with Chloé.
Bakerix: —
Backwarder: Alix says Adrien hates lies. Marinette giving Adrien the prescription is hilarious. So is Gabriel having a temporary villain lair in the train toilet.
Reflekdoll: Poor Juleka. So now Gabriel doesn’t care about Nathalie risking her life. Marinette and Adrien look cool as Lady Noire and Mister Bug. I think the episode is a little too critical of Chat Noir.
Weredad: Gabriel Akumatised a baby again. Marichat scenes. Have Adrien got only twenty peas to eat? His meal is ridiculous. Maybe he is forced to diet, because apparently he eats far too much cheese. Chat Noir says loneliness and isolation are the worst.
Silencer: —
Onichan: Calm down, Marinette, Adrien is kind and a little naive, but he isn’t stupid. Gabriel also thinks Adrien’s too naive. Adrien is fed up with girls fighting over him, but is touched by Kagami’s love for him.
Miraculer: Ladybug should listen to Chat Noir’s advice about talking to Chloé. Ladybug is too focused on defeating the villain, ignoring the emotional aspect. Chloé resists the Akuma. Chat Noir is hit with the Cataclism twice. Chloé is Queen Bee again.
Amnesio: Ladybug and Chat Noir lose their memory, detransform in front of each other and quickly assume they’re a couple, and they kiss. Adrien says he wouldn’t hide his identity from his girlfriend.
Desperada: Ladrien scenes. Adrien, where has your hair gone? Ladybug laughs at Adrien/Aspik’s jokes, but not Chat Noir’s. Adrien, what do you mean you’ve been trying for MONTHS.
Startrain: In the train Marinette sleeps on Adrien’s shoulder.
Kwami Buster: Adrien suspects that Marinette is Ladybug. Master Fu says using too many Miraculouses at once makes you mad (I see you, Monarch). Marinette as Mouse is cute, Adrien as Mr Banana is funny. Marinette tricks Chat Noir into believing that she can’t be Ladybug.
Feast: Master Fu’s backstory. Adrien’s worried about Nathalie.
Gamer 2.0: Chat Noir sacrifices himself.
Stormy Weather 2: There’re a lot of scenes from previous episodes. Marinette admits Adrien is her friend now. Nathalie admits she’s fallen in love with Gabriel and started caring about Adrien. Adrien recalls good moments with his father, but one of the memories is based on a lie (his father giving him the scarf). Plagg says Gabriel in the inside is either soft or rotten and while Adrien wants to believe the former, the latter is likely true. The second Christmas episode must have been before this episode.
Ikari Gozen: Kagami seems autistic. Chat Noir seems impressed with Kagami using the Dragon Miraculous. Adrien told Kagami that Marinette is his friend.
Timetagger: Ladybug and Chat Noir are bored and fed up with fighting Mr Pigeon for the 24th time. I wonder if Timetagger comes from their timeline or alternate timeline. Frankly speaking, I don’t treat those revelations about the future seriously. (#NoorooDeservesBetter) What’s more, Chat Noir and Nathalie say that future isn’t set in stone. From Cat Blanc we know that Bunnyx can travel to the future moments that ultimately become an alternate, non-existent timeline, so this is how I see the future that Timetagger comes from.
Party Crusher: Marinette, why are you so stupid. Adrien is surprised to see Marinette, but smiles when she still pretends to be Marino. Gabriel: ‘Joy? What’s going on in my house?!’
The Puppeteer 2: It’s both funny and sad that Adrien starts to believe that Marinette doesn’t like him at all. Adrien is just as silly as Marinette. Marinette kisses Adrien. Short Ladrien moment. Adrien tells Marinette that the girl he loves doesn’t like his jokes either.
Cat Blanc: The problem stems from the relationship between Adrien and his father. Adrien still loves him, but Gabriel is ready to use him to achieve his goal. This episode also shows that though Adrien is very nice and as Chat Noir he’s a carefree joker, he also has a lot of pain and anger inside. Additionally, reveals full of angst only weakens our superheroes.
Félix: Félix is fun to watch, he’s smart but emotionally unstable. He must be very lonely. Nathalie: Let’s Akumatise some teenagers.
Ladybug: Adrien says Marinette is fantastic. He stands up for Marinette when Lila accuses her of cheating. Marinette would’ve been Akumatised, if Nathalie hadn’t felt bad. Gabriel tells Nathalie not to use the Peacock Miraculous, but she does it behind his back. The Senti-Ladybug plot is a bit creepy in the context of season 5. Adrien forces Lila to withdraw the accusation.
Heart Hunter: Adrien likes Marinette with her hair down. She leaves him and Kagami alone after they’ve gone for ice-cream. She’s too distracted and makes a mistake that will result in loosing Master Fu. Chat Noir flirts with Ryuko. Chloé is jealous and joins Hawk Moth. Adrien and Kagami kiss.
Miracle Queen: Adrien says he wasn’t ready for the kiss and Kagami is hurt. Ladybug becomes the guardian of the Miraculouses. Will she forget everything in the future too?
Chris Master: I can’t stand that terrible old man in a red suit.
Miraculous World: New York: It looks like fanfiction a bit? Like everything’s a little over the top. The worst thing is Chat Noir accidentally killing a girl, it’s just so unnecessarily traumatic. It looks like this is his punishment for being dishonest with Ladybug. And with him sacrificing himself every other week and having some experience in being hit with the Cataclysm (Miraculer), I think he’d rather Cataclysm himself than an innocent girl.
