Six Sentence Sunday 07/01/24

Welcome to another Six Sentence Sunday. It's been a bit of a slower writing week for me this week, what with going back to work after the Christmas holidays. Even still, I'm plugging away at the wedding fic!

“I’m someone’s gay awakening,” he crows, pleased, and Henry rolls his eyes fondly, patting Alex’s chest. “What’s your name?” Henry asks the guy, who blushes to the roots of his dark hair. “Teddy,” he admits in a squeak and Henry holds out his hand. Teddy awkwardly bobs a half-curtsey and then comes to his sense and shakes Henry’s hand instead. “Thank you, Teddy, for the congratulations,” Henry says sincerely and Teddy grins broadly again. Alex gives the kid a grin and a salute, Teddy flushes so pink he’s nearly red (though that could be a trick of the light), and then he gives a little wave and disappears into the crowd.

Clearing out my drafts - this one was started from a prompt on my original Daggzandarrows Tumblr account (which I stupidly deactivated *cries in soooo many lost fics*)

“Baby Peanut’s magic”

“If we suppress it, it will only hurt her in the long run.” Regina explained, her patience running thin because they'd talked about this for so long now and, as much as she loved Robin, he just wasn’t getting it. “She needs to learn to control it now, while she's young lest she lose control and, god forbid, kill someone.”

“She wouldn't.”

“Not on purpose, Robin,” she amended on a tired sigh. The kids were due home soon and the chance to speak so openly with him was quickly dwindling. “You know her temper. At least if she understood what it was, she'd be prepared.”

He shook his head, still pacing in front of the window as she watched from her place on the sofa. “I just…” he sighed, rubbing a hand over his face, “I don't want her to turn out like-”

“Like me?” It stung, penetrated deep and flooded her veins like acid.

His pace slowed as he turned his head to look at her, a look of horror on his face, “What? No! That's not-”

“Magic is in her blood just as it is mine, Robin. Regardless of who birthed her, Mills’ blood runs through her veins. You cannot condone my magic yet condemn Zelena’s because they are one and the same.”

“Regina, I-”

“If you'll excuse me,” she interrupted briskly, swallowing thickly as tears glistened in eyes that wouldn't lift to look at him, “I need to make a start on dinner.”

“Is Mom sick?” Henry frowned as he watched Regina walk from the room, the plate of food in her hands barely touched unlike the children's empty plates she’d stacked beneath her own.

Robin swallowed guiltily, his own food inedible with the way his stomach was knotted. She'd barely looked at him since before dinner and had immersed herself in the children when they'd bounded through the front door, full of joy and caked in dirt having spent the afternoon in the forest with Robin’s men.

He felt awful.

“I think she's just a little tired, Henry.”

“She looks sad,” Scarlett frowned worriedly with eyes still on the door through which her mother had walked, “do you think she'd like a hug, Daddy?”

He couldn't help but smile with absolute affection at his daughter’s words, nodding his head as he replied, “I think she'd love that, darling.”

Her shoulders shook with her silent sobs as she pressed her face harder against her legs, wrapping her arms tighter around her knees and berating herself for getting so worked up over something she knew Robin hadn't meant.

He loved her, loved every single part of her - he'd spent many years now reaffirming that belief in her - and she knew that included her magic, he was just worried that it would corrupt their girl like it had done Zelena and Regina both and his fear wasn’t irrational...it was just unnecessary.

He didn’t understand how frightened Scarlett would be should she feel that first surge of power without knowledge of what it was or where it came from. There’d been many a night in which Regina had stood watching in the doorway of their daughter’s room as her dreams had been magically projected onto the ceiling, chuckling softly as her teddy bears had danced about the room in a way that had been strangely elegant.

It was beautiful, their daughter’s magic, but it could change and Regina wanted her to be prepared for that in a way that she herself hadn’t been.

There was a tug on her fingers that startled her, eyes wide as she lifted her head to blink wetly at the very person she'd been thinking of staring concernedly back at her.

“Why are you crying, Mama?”

She’d inherited magic from Regina’s side of the family but had most certainly inherited Robin’s ability to move silently when he wanted to. “Oh, I just stubbed my toe, sweetheart,” she replied and she hated lying but this was not something she was ready to discuss with their daughter yet, not until she and Robin were agreed on the best course of action. “It really stung.”

Eyes as blue as her father’s but as expressive as her own blinked back at her, a shadow of suspicion there as Scarlett looked to her bare feet and back again.

She changed the subject - or at least her daughter’s train of thought - by holding out her arms to Scarlett and asking, “Can Mama have a hug? It’ll make me feel much better.” And that was no lie.

Dimples dented chubby little cheeks as Scarlett nodded and reached arms up towards Regina, giggling wildly when she tickled at her sides as she lifted her onto the bed and placed her in the gap between legs now crossed, folding her arms tight around her daughter’s waist as small arms wrapped around her neck in turn.

Regina threaded her fingers through strawberry blonde curls and held Scarlett’s face to her neck as she cried quietly, trying to keep her shaking to a minimum. Their daughter was good in spite of her conception. Inherently good and that wasn’t only because of Robin but because of her too. She knew that even on her worst days.

They’d raised her in the right way - Zelena’s visits were still supervised even now and they’d never heard anything to be cautious of but it would remain that way lest she even dare think she could corrupt the goodness in Scarlett’s heart - but Regina knew the lure of dark magic. Knew how it could whisper in your ear and wrap around your heart.

It was a chance they weren’t willing to take where Zelena was concerned despite Regina’s own desire for a change in her sister much like her own. There was simply too much to lose.

“Can I sleep with you tonight, Mama?”

Her heart ached in her chest as she stroked her fingers through Scarlett’s hair and nodded, “Of course you can, my darling.”

She wasn’t sure of the time nor how long she’d been asleep but when she blinked open heavy eyes, she found Robin to be sitting in the armchair in the corner of the room watching them sleep. He looked exhausted and completely guilt-stricken. It was automatic and instinctual for her to lift a hand from Scarlett’s back and hold it out to him.

Robin didn’t hesitate to cross the small distance to the bed and slip carefully beneath the covers, instantly leaning up and over their daughter to press a kiss to Regina’s lips. “I am so sorry, my love.”

Regina shushed him gently, accepting another lingering kiss from him before she lay her head back down onto the pillow and watched as he did the same after dropping a kiss into Scarlett’s sleep-mussed curls. They lay in silence for a long moment, just soaking in the tiny child in their arms and the joy she brought to all of their lives much like her brothers before her. A child not born of Regina, much like the other two, but just as embedded in her heart.

“She may be Mills by blood,” Regina began quietly, shushing him gently when he moved to apologise, to tell her he hadn’t meant that. “But she’s also a Locksley by heart and soul. She’s so good, Robin. Much of the darkness in both Zelena and myself was out there by years of neglect. We chased that with a need to be loved by people who didn’t have the capacity to and that in turn bred abuse and an acceptance that that was what we deserved…until we couldn’t stand it anymore.”

“That dark path was a choice both Zelena and I took. I was simply lucky enough to find people to pull me back from that, to make me realise that there was so much more for me to find in the light.” She pressed a kiss to Scarlett’s temple when the girl snuggled deeper into her hole without waking before continuing. “One day Zelena might realise that too - maybe she’s already leaning that way, only time will tell…but Scarlett will never have to wonder if she is loved because we show her everyday. She will never feel alone because she has a whole army of people behind her. And she will never feel scared because we are going to tell her the truth.”

“Within reason,” Robin laughed softly, and she breathed a laugh in return because yes, some things she didn’t need to know just yet. But others…

“I suspect she already knows she can do special things or at least sense it, I began to suspect at her age,” she smiled down at the angelic features so relaxed in sleep, reminded of Henry at that age and Roland too, not yet aware of how dangerous or scary the world could be. “I just don’t want her to fear what is a part of her. I don’t want her to resent her magic, not when we can prepare her for it, when I can teach her to wield it properly.”

“I know,” Robin moved forward to capture her lips in a kiss that said so much more than he could. It was full of apology, of compassion and of promise. She was not alone. He stayed close when he allowed the kiss to break, stroking a hair through Scarlett’s curls. “I don’t want her scared either. I want her to feel confident in who she is, to know she can be whoever she wants to and we’ll always be there to catch her if she falls…it’s just…”

“Scary?”

He nodded, relief colouring his features that he was finally communicating what he’d been trying to say earlier. “I have absolutely no doubt that you will keep her safe, Regina. I trust you implicitly.”

She smiled tenderly at him, eyes moving over his face for a long moment before she admitted, “It scares the hell out of me too, Robin…” and then, “but the thought of Scarlett disliking or even fearing any part of herself scares me more.”

Robin leaned in once more to press a kiss to her forehead, cupping the back of her head as he moved in closer to hold his two favourite girls as he pressed his forehead to her own and promised, “Then her lessons start tomorrow. Let’s show our daughter another of the beautiful things about herself to love.”

And with those words, another dark shadow began to fade from Regina’s bruised heart as she closed her eyes and cuddled close to her family. Her world.

i have to share this since this will forever be a favorite memory of mine till the day i die.

picture this, you wake up at 6am on a somewhat muggy january 26th. final day has arrived for walt disney’s country bear jamboree, an opening day attraction for the magic kingdom. you took the day off of work to go see your favorite bears dressed up as teddi barra, definitely not reusing your costume from mickey’s not so scary halloween party.

after going in and out of the attraction more than 30 times and not even stepping foot into any other area of the park, the sun begins to set and it is now reaching 8pm. the rumor was that the theater would remain open until park close, 11pm. you are now walking into your next showing in grizzly hall and take your seat on the right side of the stage. as max, buff, and melvin begin to chatter, henry exclaims “give me a little intro there, gomer!” the tall bear on piano plays his little diddy. it is now time for the show to start, so henry’s curtain opens. but wait. you watched the show many a times. even before henry speaks, you always notice his paw hit the curtain. but this time was different. there was no pawing at the curtain. it opens and to your surprise, poor henry is t-posing and not moving a muscle.

“NOOOOOOO HENRY!!!” you yell out as everyone is losing their minds. (yes, in the video, that is me screaming)

the show continues, a stuck romeo is also in kahoots with henry #1. as you are leaving the theater and signaling your group to hop in line again. you get an uneasy feeling in your tummy and start to worry about what will happen next. surely this was just something minor and it’ll be fixed soon, right?

it doesn’t.

the line doesn’t move for the next 3 hours. you are now waiting at the back of line, assuming if the show did start up again, you would be watching the last show of the night for guests. then people start whipping out their phones and seeing what people from the front of the line are talking about. henry and romeo have malfunctioned to the point of no return and there will be no shows for the rest of the night.

“wait… so that was it? did we really just see the last ever show at 8pm and we didn’t even know it” you ask yourself as you’re slowly walking down the path. mind you the line was so long it extended in adventureland. as you get to the theater, cast members are explaining to the guests that we are allowed to take pictures of the empty theater but it would be a closed casket viewing (artistic rendition) and at the end of it, all guests in line would be able to receive the D23 exclusive country bear musical jamboree poster and a fast pass for the next day.

at this point you are absolutely sobbing your eyes out, you barely got into the bears in august when you first moved to florida and now they’re gone. well, practicing a new show but regardless. how can your day get any worse?

next day you get told you are on temporary probation from work, your blue disney ID and main entrance pass have been taken away since you are being accused of stealing trash.

then a week later you get officially fired from the walt disney company and are stranded for another week in florida with no money ok the end bai baiiiii

Steven Hyde (born 1885) as Jack Dawson: A twenty-six-year-old drifter from Chippewa Falls, Wisconsin, who gambled his way onto the Titanic. He's traveled throughout North America and western Europe, including Paris, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, and London, never settling down in one place. Jacqueline "Jackie" Burkhart (born 1887) as Rose Dewitt-Bukater: Part of the disgraced Burkhart family, her father Jack is in prison (he was on the wrong side of the law, and his trust was broken up by Teddy Roosevelt himself). And she's close to becoming an old maid, in her mother's eyes, so she must maintain appearances. And engage herself to a restless investment banker, and commit herself to misery. Like many before her.

Pamela "Pam" Burkhart (born 1865) as Ruth Dewitt-Bukater: Pam is desperate. Her husband is in prison, the money is almost gone, and she's trying to salvage what's left and save face. And that includes marrying her "old maid" of a daughter off to an investment banker.

Katherine "Kitty" Forman (nee Sigurdson) (born 1861) as Margaret "Molly" Brown: A former Wisconsinite and daughter of an abolitionist, she follows her restless husband Red to Chicago and then to Leadville, Colorado, where he strikes it rich. She's a mother, a nurse, and heads a soup kitchen. And as a part of the "nouveau riche," she's almost universally shunned by high society. But she's willing to lend a hand, when the rest? They hoard their riches, and sit on their laurels.

Michael Kelso (born 1885) as Tommy: A meager, reckless Scotsman and welder, hoping to find a better life in America with his wife Elizabeth "Brooke" (born 1883) and their children Elizabeth "Betsy" (born 1904) and John "Jay" (born 1910).

Fez (born 1886) as Fabrizio: Hyde's close friend, who he met in New York. He has accompanied him on his adventures in Paris, Amsterdam, Edinburgh, and London.

Karl Schmidt (born 1884) as Cal Hockley: Jackie's fiance. A hot-headed, ambitious investment banker.

Plus:

Eric Forman (born 1886) as Lawrence "Larry" Brown: Shunning the family mining business by being a history professor at the University of Chicago and an amateur photographer and filmmaker, he's well known for consistently disappointing his father. But because of Red's failing health, his father appointed him to be the representative of the American branch of the Forman family at the family reunion in Northern Ireland. Unlike his father, he is notorious for being incredibly unlucky.

Donna Forman (nee Pinciotti) (born 1886): Eric's progressive suffragette wife and a promising freelancer, originally from New York, who fails to fit in with the society ladies. Her paternal grandmother (a Visconti) was born into old money, older than even the society ladies can possibly boast. But her father Bob also lucked out by investing in Henry Ford's business early on, largely due to his daughter's insistence.

Sarah "Sadie" Forman (born 1905): Eric and Donna's young daughter, who is quiet, pensive, and creative. She seems to have both her mother's love for reading and writing, and her father's love for photography and filmography.

William "Liam" Forman (born 1909): Eric and Donna's young son, who is often attached to his sister's hip.

Reginald "Red" Forman (born 1857) as JJ Brown: Not featured but consistently mentioned, Red is a mining engineer that struck it rich (and found a massive ore seam) in Leadville, Colorado, with his wife Kitty already (and still firmly) by his side. His branch of the family, hailing from Northern Ireland, left during the potato famine and initially settled in Point Place, Wisconsin. But his failing health prevented him from attending the Forman family reunion, so he asked Eric to represent the family in lieu of his attendance.

Funny story, I had one yesterday. Sadly, it was, indeed, ending.

Who is/are your comfort character(s)? Of mine? Henry and Selene are always there when I have an issue that needs working through, but when I'm not taking care of myself, Lizzie will always turn up sooner or later to give me a hug and help me get back on track. She's annoying but a good egg. Aside from that, seeing Katriona and Artemis (@the-al-chemist) always makes me ridiculously happy, no matter what.

What kind of day is it? Another day in a series of soft spring rain days. Which I love, honestly. Spring is growing on me, who would have thought?

Something you've kept since childhood? The teddy bear (or, rather, the current version of it bc there's been LOADS) my dad sewed for me. Also, a couple of books that I passed on to the gremlin king.

What kind of music keeps you grounded? I have a couple of songs I always come back to when I need them, but there's one specific song (namely, The Greatest Show on Earth by my all-time favourite band Nightwish) that always leaves me a crying wreck and in awe of all creation. Nothing but the grandness of evolution to make you realise that we're too lucky to be here in the first place to let anything ruin your day, tbh.

I was thinking. As an oldest child myself, I suffer from oldest child syndrome.

Now, anyone who has been following my blog lately knows that I’ve been kinning Victor lately. This got me thinking.

Frankenstein Spoilers in the following explanation

Victor has two younger siblings biologically, plus Elizabeth— a sister figure. Out of these four, he is the oldest.

When thinking about Victor, his defining personality traits (other than sopping wet and pathetic) are anxious, perfectionistic, solitary, obsessive, a little egotistical, etc etc.

Funny thing is, all of these traits are associated with eldest child syndrome. Typically, these are brought on by high parental expectations. Now, as a C*roline and Al*ones hater, it’s pretty obvious that their expectations for Victor were a little much. I mean, Caroline’s dying wish was to control Victor’s love life. Alphonse preserved this wish, even reminding Victor of this said wish while he is recovering from his arrest and death of his closest friend. Alphonse and Caroline are also probably homophobic, I will not be taking criticism at this time.

That being said, there’s almost no question as to why Victor hardly talks to his family in Ingolstadt. Why he obsesses over his work, freaks out when it’s not up to his standards, abandons the paternal role he’s been forced into all his life. Also explains why he’s only miserable when it comes to marrying Elizabeth, and doesn’t argue about it at all. And why he’s so close to Clerval, someone who genuinely seems to care for his opinions and wishes.

I dunno. It’s definitely a theory that should be thought into.

My #1 post of 2022

So I saw a post that kind of made me want to post this.

I feel like there’s a lot of gatekeeping in the J&H fandom. I’ve see a lot of posts like “you’re wrong if you like TGS” “you’re not valid in the fandom if you interpret the duality differently” “we don’t stan if you think Jekyll is cis.”

It feels really toxic, imo. I interpret the story differently than others, and that’s fine. A lot of the story is really open ended and up for interpretation. Specifically with the second point with the duality, I’ve seen hate on the “Jekyll has OCD” interpretation on here in the past, and like? Why?

While that’s personally the interpretation I choose to agree with, that’s not what I’m talking about in this post. There’s really no need to hate on seeing the book differently. As with most other fandoms, you’re not looking at the big picture. There’s a group of people who enjoy the same media as you, and you’re really just going to trash their opinions?

I dunno. I don’t really have a solid point I’m getting at. It just pisses me off. I have a lot of opinions about the book that I’m afraid to share, and I’m sure tons of others do too.

Please be nice y’all. It’s not like Stevenson is coming back from the grave to confirm any interpretation is right.

So. Arsene is kind of an oc of mine, kind of not. He is Arsene Lupin, Gentleman Thief. I don’t know if you’re familiar with the classic French literature by that title or not?? Anyway, I am currently writing my own, semi-steampunk, version of the Arsene Lupin tales. And my Arsene is rather unique compared to other versions of Monsieur Lupin there have been before. Examples being ‘Lupin the Third’, or Arsene Lupin in Code:Realize, or Joker’s initial persona Arsene in Persona 5. Now, that’s the basis for all of it. But you asked for his story, and here goes.

Monsieur Arsene Maurice Julien Henri Lupin is a one-of-a-kind, unique young Frenchman born in the countryside just outside Avignon, and he has had a fairly rough childhood for a variety of reasons, leading him to turn to crime as an outlet, a lifestyle, and a call for attention. But he is not an aggressive criminal. He is a phantom thief, robbing art galleries and stealing prized jewels, and also capturing hearts (-eyebrow waggle-) all across France. But he does not steal from the poor and he has never threatened someone’s life. As well, while he may steal priceless paintings and other works of art from the galleries, he has occasionally been known to return them. Or.. he seems to, at least. There are some rumors that he is replacing the real pieces with fakes. If he steals money, he redistributes it among those who need it more than who he took it from. Somewhat of a French Robin Hood, if you will.

However, that being said, Arsene is completely unlike anyone else in all of France, and as far as he knows, in all the world. Because Arsene isn’t human. He is a breed of demon called ‘daemonium dominus arbitera’, or ‘demon lord of judgement’. He is unaware of his species name or anything regarding it, though. But he is well aware of his being a demon, and honestly he flaunts it. He’s proud of what he is.

Now. Fast forward to the current times in which the story takes place. Arsene is a young, wild twenty-four-year-old demon living now in Paris, the year is 1684. The story begins on a train traveling across France at night, heading to Paris. Arsene is on board this train, though he is concealing himself among the normal folks. He takes a seat across from a young man barely two years his junior, a young British fellow by the name of Theodore Bennett. Theodore, or Teddy as his sister Margaret calls him, is currently on his way to Paris to start a new life as an inventor, and he’s traveling earlier than Margaret (or Maggie) to get a feel of the city and its possible dangers before his sister joins him. Arsene strikes up conversation with him, all while not revealing any personal details of his own. He is a curious fellow after all.

However, their conversation is cut short as the train comes to a halt, with no scheduled stops or stations in sight. Enter Inspector Hercule Ganimard, a thirty-five-year-old man bent on putting Arsene behind bars to take responsibility for his crimes. He has come aboard in search of Arsene, and the demon thief in question makes the decision to conceal himself just a bit further and feign sleep. But Ganimard isn’t fooled and quickly reveals Arsene for who he is, leading to a rather dramatic standoff aboard the train before Arsene manages to escape into the night, leaving Teddy now to continue his trip with Ganimard for company instead.

Once Teddy arrives in Paris, Arsene is already there to greet him at his new home. Odd, since Teddy did never mention an address for his new residence. But from this point on, Arsene has taken a liking to Teddy and often ropes him into all kinds of trouble and shenanigans. So for the beginning, the story is rather light-hearted. But soon even stranger things start happening in Paris. Fierce black monsters stalking the city streets at night, women going missing, odd messages and cryptic warnings, a particularly unusual butcher.. and Arsene’s darker past will come to light as well.

It’s a wild adventure with Arsene, Teddy, Maggie, and Ganimard on the streets of Paris, full of mystery, intrigue, life, and romance.. in The Mysterious Cases of Arsene Lupin!
