OVH alternative
Tumblr media
Talk on Hosting is series here at, https://thicc-lad.tumblr.com/.  Today we are relating with a user that needs an OVH alternative.
While we will focus on this you can see more of our content on money and etc.
For the last couple of years, i was using OVH as a hosting company. It was okeyish. But after another 'tango down' I need to find a new vendor.
But I do struggle a bit - my monthly traffic is around 30k UU, but each second month I have a bigger campaign that's why the traffic can increase even up to 500k UU per month.
In terms of tech - I have 2 Wordpress websites + around 10 landing pages (pure css/html/js). In total I'm using around 30gb of disk space (mail is hosted on gsuite)..
My questions - should I still consider using shared hosting or it's a rather time to switch to some other solutions (vps, AWS?)? I don't have experience on that. My current hosting costs me more less 200-250 EUR per year. So ideally if I would not increase the yearly bill. Thanks for any tech / company tips and recommendations.
Questionnaire summary:
- monthly budget: max 20usd's - customers are located within the USA and EU - wordpress + static sites - as mentioned around 25k uu (regular), 300-500k uu (when the campaign is on) - i've never administrated a vps but i'm quite advanced in terms of directadmin/cpanel/custom panels
Best OVH Alternative Response
Given that you have no experience with Linux administration, it's not necessarily a good idea to start with a site that sees quite a bit of traffic.
Tumblr media
Static hosting isn't necessarily the issue, that can be done for 2€ a month, although a little bit of effort on your site is necessary. You can use Amazon S3 for that, bandwidth will be the biggest cost factor, which can be optimized with a CDN like Cloud flare.

Dynamic web hosting seems to be the bigger issue. With the specs you shared, less than 200€ already seems like a pretty good deal, going any cheaper will likely have a pretty negative performance impact, especially with your traffic.
You could use managed WP hosting like WPengine, but that will definitely exceed your 20€/month budget.

Have you looked into optimizing your site and also using something like Cloudflare first?
You really don't have many options with that budget and no administration skills. Maybe you need to monetize your websites in some way to cover the cost of a managed VPS provider. Either that or ask for donations.

Inexpensive Web Hosting Solution With Substantial Disk Space To Use
Tumblr media
Looking for an inexpensive solution with substantial disk space? In this guide, I will explain the core things you might need for you to consider your recommendations.
Here’s a related want.
Basically, I need a new home for a wordpress site that holds my collection of photos. I get no traffic to speak of, and I don't run anything intensive.
I prefer cPanel. I need about 20 GB of space that I can actually use, minimum. Inodes are less of a problem as most of my files are fairly large (2-3 MB) images, but then there are the thumbnails and intermediate sizes, too. Still, it's nothing compared to how people fill up their accounts with scripts.
My main constraint is cost, and I don't want a long term commitment. I'm looking to drop a few bucks to try out a host for this, fully prepared to move on if it doesn't work out. I've been around the block a few times.
To show my preferences, I've used Knownhost vps for years and managed them for others, and they're the best hosting company
I've dealt with. It's too bad they require a 3 year deal on shared hosting in order to get a deal. At the other end of the spectrum, I've had battles with Hostgator, Bluehost, Site5, and a few others, and those I won't deal with again.
Any suggestions would be appreciated. It's been a few years since I needed shared hosting for anything.

In one of the responses,
I took a look at Vultr, but it's more than I want. I'm looking for a simple, fully managed shared hosting plan where I don't have to do any of the server related work because I want to be working on my site's content exclusively.
I just need one with at least 20GB of space I can actually use, as opposed to the common false advertising of the big name hosts. I've been in the situation before of having "too much stuff" in my account, and having a host try to bully me into a VPS or dedicated server for doing nothing more than using a portion of the space allocated to me according to the plan I had purchased.
I just want an honest shared hosting plan. Perhaps that's too much to ask of this industry.

GoDaddy, is it an EIG?
Tumblr media
In the last post,we talked about hosting with EIG, today, we want to see GoDaddy
Godaddy: Although GoDaddy is not an EIG company, they are just one more host to stay far away from.
From expensive domains, to overloaded servers. These are not the people I would trust to hold my website.
They get hacked, breached, (you name it) on a regular basis. They'll lure you in with their "award winning" customer support.
And I will say, some of their agents are really good, and some are just absolutely dumb founded, and I wonder how they even got a job.

Hosting Terms to know
Tumblr media
Domains:
Do not get "free domains" or "free webhosting". You get what you pay for, and if you pay for nothing, expect just the same. It's worth it to spend $1 for a .xyz domain, or whatever TLD you want. Shared Web hosting is very affordable nowadays. It is also possible, to buy a domain and not host a website with it. In fact, it's very common!
Renewals
In most cases, when you buy a domain or web hosting, the first month is usually the cheapest. Therefor, when you renew (or carry on to the next month), the price can be jacked up to a much higher rate. Some companies do monthly renewals, and some do yearly. Also, some webhosts will advertise $2.88 per month (example), but when you go and purchase, you have to purchase it 3 years in advance to get that price. And that right there, is the web hosting industry.
Also: hosting for podcasts
Web Builders
If you use Wix, SquareSpace, Weebly, or Shopify, you cannot host that website elsewhere. It must be hosted with that company, because they provide the builders and the hosting.
Hosting
When looking for hosting, make sure you check out their support as well. You'll need support when you don't expect it, and you'll want to be sure that you'll be getting the best support out there. Wether it's phone, chat, email, ticket, whatever. It's worth checking it out.

Fetch Rewards
Tumblr media
Ever heard of Fetch Rewards? Well, it’s an income program you can make money online. We will see it today.
Fetch Rewards
Tumblr media
Fetch Rewards is having a Refer a Friend event through THIS TUESDAY: get 7,000 points for every 2 friends you refer, and your friends also get 2,000 points when they scan their first receipt. 2,000 points is $2.
Use the code TTQWH and scan a receipt to get the $2, then just refer 2 friends to get $7. Remember to make sure you get them to scan a receipt BEFORE WEDNESDAY!
Info about Fetch Rewards: you get points from scanning grocery receipts, and it even works with eReceipts (like Amazon purchases). 1,000 points = $1, and you get 2,000 points from each person you refer.
See also: create an online course and make money
The first 2 receipts you scan gives you 750 and 500, then every receipt after that is 200 points. You can’t use the same receipt with 2 different accounts (I tried doing that).
With just 5,000 points, you can immediately redeem them for a $5 gift card of your choice- and there’s a very wide selection for you to choose from. It goes up to $50 (the equivalent of 50,000 points).
So if you refer your family and friends, you could immediately start out with a lot of points :) They have to scan a receipt in order for you to get the points, though.
