Happy #MicrowearMonday ! . I was doing some tests this morning to see how I could take microscope photos through my old vintage microscope. I just used my phone camera to look through the lens at different magnifications at a scrap of material. The lowest two magnifications turned out okay, but the highest was still a bit tricky to get in focus with holding the phone still enough. I might have to see if I can set up something with my tripod so that it all holds steady. . There is also no light source on the microscope, which isn't such a big problem for the photos, because my camera seems to automatically use night mode to ensure that you can see what's at the end of the lens, but when I'm just looking through it myself it's a bit of an issue. I may therefore need to get myself one of those little clip-on reading lights to attach to the platform. . I also need to get a little scale bar of some sort, so that I can work out the measurements of each field of view and create a little scale for each level of magnification. I might even be able to use the one I have for my little USB Dino-lite microscope... More experiments required! . Neolicaphrium recens here might look like some sort of early horse, but this little mammal was actually something else entirely.

Known from southern South America during the late Pleistocene to early Holocene, between about 1 million and 11,000 years ago, Neolicaphrium was the last known member of the proterotheriids, a group of South American native ungulates that were only very distantly related to horses, tapirs, and rhinos. Instead these animals evolved their remarkably horse-like body plan completely independently, adapting for high-speed running with a single weight-bearing hoof on each foot.

Neolicaphrium was a mid-sized proterotheriid, standing around 45cm tall at the shoulder (~1'6"), and unlike some of its more specialized relatives it still had two small vestigial toes on each foot along with its main hoof. Tooth microwear studies suggest it had a browsing diet, mainly feeding on soft leaves, stems, and buds in its savannah woodland habitat.

It was one of the few South American native ungulates to survive through the Great American Biotic Interchange, when the formation of the Isthmus of Panama allowed North and South American animals to disperse into each other's native ranges. While many of its relatives had already gone extinct in the wake of the massive ecological changes this caused, Neolicaphrium seems to have been enough of a generalist to hold on, living alongside a fairly modern-looking selection of northern immigrant mammals such as deer, peccaries, tapirs, foxes, jaguars… and also actual horses.

Some of the earliest human inhabitants of South America would have seen Neolicaphirum alive before its extinction. We don't know whether they had any direct impact on its disappearance – but since the horses it lived alongside were hunted by humans and also went extinct, it's possible that a combination of shifting climate and hunting pressure pushed the last of the little not-horses over the edge, too.

Researchers use three-dimensional dental microwear texture analysis on mosasaurs and extant reptiles to provide quantitative dietary constraints for Type-Maastrichtian mosasaurs and assess levels of niche partitioning between taxa by analysing and comparing teeth characteristics.

good question! though there’s little publicly available information on the taxon, lophocyonidae appears to be a family of feliformes that went the doggy route, at least in some aspects. they tended to have longer snoots, similar to caniformes. these morphological similarities to canids are apparently significant enough that the family name has “cyon” in it (greek for “dog”)! nowadays, lophocyonidae is thought to be closest related to hyeaenidae, the other doggy-est not-cats out there.

interestingly enough, the microwear found on molars of lophocyonid genera like sivansua and izmirictis suggest they leaned toward a more herbivorous lifestyle.

In the Neanderthal site of Combe-Grenal, France, hunting strategies were unaffected by changing climate

Neanderthals in Combe-Grenal (France) preferred to hunt in open environments, and their hunting strategies did not alter during periods of climatic change, according to a study published January 18, 2023 in the open-access journal PLOS ONE by Emilie Berlioz of the CNRS/Université Toulouse Jean Jaurès, France, and colleagues, as part of research carried out in the ANR DeerPal project.

The archaeological site of Combe-Grenal in France was inhabited by Neanderthals for many millennia throughout the Middle Palaeolithic from around 150,000 to 45,000 years ago. These inhabitants hunted local animals whose remains are also found at the site. During the Neanderthals’ occupation, the region experienced numerous oscillations of climate and environmental conditions which are known to have impacted the habits of local fauna. In this study, Berlioz and colleagues investigated the habitat preferences of species hunted by the Neanderthals to investigate whether these environmental shifts affected Neanderthal hunting strategies.

The authors examined nearly 400 specimens of hunted animals from the site, including bison, aurochs, red deer, and reindeer, using wear on the animals’ teeth to infer their diets during the final days of their lives. The animals were found to have fed predominantly on plants growing in an open, tundra-like environment. This pattern was consistent across the many millennia recorded at Combe-Grenal, suggesting that these hunted animals continued to prefer an open-habitat feeding ecology, even during times of significant climate fluctuations. As a result, Neanderthal hunters “stayed in the open,” and were not forced to switch to hunting tactics adapted to close encounters in forested environments. In Combe-Grenal, these results put into perspective the link generally established between the evolution of the production of lithic tools and the adaptation of hunting strategies of human populations in response to environmental changes

This information is essential to understanding the influences of local environmental changes on material culture or the human history. Further examination of similar data at other sites will allow researchers to investigate whether this trend holds true at different times and in different regions.

The authors add: “Dental microwear texture analysis of ungulate preys at Combe-Grenal shows Neanderthal hunting strategies were unaffected by climatic and environmental oscillations throughout millenia.”
