The Zennor Mermaid Chair in the church of St Senara, Cornwall, 6th-12th century
Long ago, a beautiful and richly dressed woman occasionally attended services at St. Senara's Church in Zennor, and sometimes at Morvah. The parishioners were enchanted by her beauty and her voice, for her singing was sweeter than all the rest. She appeared infrequently for scores of years, but never seemed to age, and nobody knew whence she came, although they watched her from the summit of Tregarthen Hill. After many years, the mysterious woman became interested in a young man named Mathey Trewella, "the best singer in the parish." One day he followed her home, and disappeared; neither was ever seen again in Zennor Church. The villagers wondered what had become of the two, until one Sunday a ship cast anchor about a mile from Pendour Cove. Soon after, a mermaid appeared, and asked that the anchor be raised, as one of its flukes was resting on her door, and she was unable to reach her children. The sailors obliged, and quickly set sail, believing the mermaid to be an ill omen. But when the villagers heard of this, they concluded that the mermaid was the same lady who had long visited their church, and that she had enticed Mathey Trewella to come and live with her.
The parishioners at St. Senara's commemorated the story by having one end of a bench carved in the shape of a mermaid. The famed "mermaid chair" was the same bench on which the mermaid had sat and sung, opposite Trewella in the singing loft.
There are many reasons as to why there might have been a mermaid carved into a chair at a church, as mermaids represented two things to medieval Christians. They were thought to be a symbol of lust, due to their connection with the Greek goddess Aphrodite, and they were also thought to be an illustration of Jesus Christ, because of their fish-human form, for, just as mermaids are both human-like and fish-like, Jesus can be both human and divine.

I need hot house hightower hc and lore 🫠
I have a few in my House Hightower tag!
They're definitely one of the coolest houses in Westeros. They have historically dabbled in alchemy and necromancy. They have a Valyrian steel sword called Vigilance (ofc they do). There's a possible maester conspiracy going on. Lord Leyton is obviously doing sorcery up in the High Tower and sending his sons on various errands. There are known to be glass candles in Oldtown. Tower of Sauron symbolism? Future Panopticon if Euron gets his hands on it? In any case, Leyton is clearly a man with a plan.
"The Hightower must be doing something." "To be sure. Lord Leyton's locked atop his tower with the Mad Maid, consulting books of spells. Might be he'll raise an army from the deeps. Or not. Baelor's building galleys, Gunthor has charge of the harbor, Garth is training new recruits, and Humfrey's gone to Lys to hire sellsails. If he can winkle a proper fleet out of his whore of a sister,* we can start paying back the ironmen with some of their own coin. Till then, the best we can do is guard the sound and wait for the bitch queen in King's Landing to let Lord Paxter off his leash." The bitterness of the captain's final words shocked Sam as much as the things he said. If King's Landing loses Oldtown and the Arbor, the whole realm will fall to pieces, he thought as he watched the Huntress and her sisters moving off.
They're preparing for a massive Lovecraftian showdown against Euron. We're all going to be rooting for the Hightowers come TWOW! I am begging the fandom to stop sleeping on this house. They're right at the junction where magic, science and religion intertwine - all expressions of man's quest towards transcendence!
*that's Lynesse Hightower, Jorah Mormont's wife, the person indirectly responsible for Dany's entire arc.

the first time it happens they don't know if it's a one time thing or not, so once phil gets forever some pants and forever manages to stand (with a lot of assistance of course) they don't want to waist a second of their time together on land so instead of having forever try to learn to walk with what little time they have, phil carries him everywhere
they spend the whole day exploring the human world, forever being carried on Phil's back with his arms around his neck and new legs being held up to keep him secure. forever knows he should be taking in the sights of the human world, and he is, but he can't help when his gaze drifts back to phil. phil who is answering all of forevers questions with a huge grin on his face.
forever can't help but steal as many kisses as possible, Phil's laugh only spurred him on more even when phil complained that he was gonna miss all the sights. it didn't matter to him, as beautiful as Phil's world is it pales in comparison to his loves smile
the only thing that manages to tear forevers attention away from phil is the flower field, it was so colourful he couldn't not get destroyed by it. it was just like how phil had described it.
they spend the rest of their evening sitting in the field, phil braiding flowers into forevers hair whispering sweet nothings into his ear and giving forever little kisses to keep him awake. it doesn't work of course and forever fall asleep soon after, not surprising considering he just spent the day in a whole new world soaking in as much information as possible. it doesn't take long for phil to succumb to his own exhaustion, falling asleep next to forever surrounded by flowers
he wakes up to forever giving him the drowsy morning kisses he had always longed for since the thought first entered his head, he has the biggest smile on his face when he kisses forever back
- giggling and kicking my feet 🪶

Postcards from Snagglepuss
Breezly Bruin explains ursine diving technique for you
SANDY BAY, OFF ST. THOMAS, US VIRGIN ISLANDS: "Is it any wonder polar bears can dive so deep, and so gracefully?" exclaimed Breezly Bruin in that rather dopey sort of voice of his to me and, as I understand it, Peter Potamus during a lull in diving aboard the Diver's Delight at anchor on the north side of St. Thomas one evening close to sunset.
"Heavens to Cousteau!" exclaimed I.
"Breezly," Peter Potamus chimed in, "I do have to acknowledge that bears could get to be skillful and playful in water, and especially polar bears like yourself."
"Still," Breezly continued, "back in Nome, it was often for survival as much as fun!"
"Fish, I assume," said I.
"Correct." With Breezly explaining that it was rather necessary, considering the dead weight they carried, to dump his boots, scarf and Stormy Kromer cap before diving sessions. "And such being all the more important for someone bound to dive as deep as 40, maybe 50 feet on his own lung power!"
Peter Potamus was quick to remark about the several times with the Magic Divers that Breezly Bruin pulled off some spectacular dives as were well documented, a few of which appeared on Underwater America with Peter Potamus, if you still recall that. And equally at home in fresh water as much as salt.
"And how impressive that must have been," Peter Potamus remarked, "when we were diving off the Mermaid's Chair a little earlier!"
"Yet," Breezly remarked, "you have to wonder if there really was such a chair underwater near that particular dive spot; I would have loved to sit there, picturing myself as an ursine Neptune ..."
"Though I should note," saith I over some shandy--as in lemonade and ginger beer, a rather refreshing thirst quencher in the tropics, mind you--that you happen to be rather comical underwater, even for a natural born freediver!"
"Who said that I wasn't necessarily?" was how Breezly responded.
Whereupon Betty Bruin, Breezly's girlfriend and sometime diving compadre, joined in the converse. "I do have to admit there, boys, that Breezly can get to be a rather interesting diving companion as much as lover ... and given waters such as these, with coral reefs so fascinating and dolphins being especially playful, is it any wonder they can bring out the romantic side in us?"
"From experience I've had in the uncharted waters and islands of Polynesia," Peter Potamus added, "even allowing for such being a mainly primitive population still keeping to themselves in the absence of so-called 'Civilisation,' and excusing outright nudity as being practically natural ... it just seems tropical waters can be all the more sensually stimulating!"
"Put it down to the warmth of the waters," remarked I, "as much as the effect of the reefs and the presence of dolphins, who, quite naturally, are rather romantic."
Which, after a brief spell of stunned silence, brought out the laughs.
