It’s kinda funny how the distinction between “grunt suits” and “hero suits” is mostly a thematic thing in Gundam, with the biggest separating factor being the pilot’s plot armor level, but things inspired by Gundam codified the difference in-universe in terms of stats. RX-7s vs Buster Machines in Gunbuster, MTs vs ACs in Armored Core, LEVs vs Orbital Frames in Zone of the Enders…

"HOW DO YOU LIKE ME NAAOOOW?!!" —Michael Wilson, 47th President of the United States
Metal Wolf Chaos is a cult classic game that puts you in the shoes of the President of the United States, who must fight against a coup led by his Vice President using a powerful mech suit. Originally released in 2004 for the Xbox, the game has been remastered and re-released in 2019 as Metal Wolf Chaos XD, with improved graphics, controls, and compatibility. In this review, we will take a look at how the game holds up today, what makes it so unique and memorable, and why you should give it a try if you are a fan of over-the-top action and humor.

In between sessions of Unicorn Overlord, I’ve been replaying Vanillaware’s previous masterpiece 13 Sentinels. I was 2/3rds through it a few years ago but the experience was so fuzzy story & gameplay wise in my head that I’ve just decided to start over from scratch.
The distance only made me recall how gripping the game is in every aspect but I have to give special specific praise to the combat. The blend of mecha action x real-time strategy x tower defense is truly inspired & evocative. Just like in Unicorn Overlord, each time a battle ends or if I turn off the game, I have an itch to engage in just one more battle. Despite the simplistic holographic representations of all the units, the mix of art design/aesthetic & combat skills still has the effect of feeling like you’re truly controlling a squadron of giant mecha against deadly kaiju in ways that honestly beat out some similar mecha strategy games I’ve played before.
It’s genuinely a paradigm I’d love to see cribbed in other games. Just thinking about it off the top of my head, I’d love a similar gameplay experience where the citywide mech battles were replaced with squads of superheroes vs hordes of attacking villains & their minions.

It feels like there's been this very particular subset of the Pacific Rim fandom who were into it specifically for how its central conceit blurs the line between intimacy and codependency, but felt constrained by the fundamental optimism of the source material – like no matter how fucked up they made it, there was something basic and structural embedded in it that meant it could never be fucked up enough.
And then Armored Core VI came along.

Lancer on a physical tabletop with Lego minis!
We finally did the thing! I roped my siblings into playtesting a game of Lancer using Legos and a physical tabletop. The sitrep was to destroy five buildings, marked in red, because the Karrakins were using the installation to track their mobile hidden base (our home campaign is a blatant ripoff of Deserts of Kharak).
Things that need improvement:
better way to measure tiles. We were doing 4cm/space and had to do a lot of multiplication. Going to try wood dowels with tiles marked + get some kind of grid underlay.
similarly, we need aoe templates
I used too much terrain, it got messy
should get status rings/tokens to mark lock-on, etc
Things that worked well:
it was sick as hell to be able to physically destroy Lego terrain and mechs as they fell
we used physical dice? For lancer?? And it turns out clicky clack math rocks continue to be inherently great.
witchdice works well on mobile devices for character sheets so not every PC had to have a full laptop
different height-terrain was fun, though it made movement costs tricky to calculate
I'm excited to keep trying out different setups. All the terrain and stuff I've collected is pretty modular (lego makes that easy) so it'll be fun to see how wide a range of map types is possible.

CELESTIAL BODIES IS NOW OUT! GO GET IT!
Our (myself and @basilisika's) mecha game is FINALLY OUT! Go get it here!
(You may have read my post about The Grid™️ a little while ago. This is that!)
We're running an itchfund to raise a little so we can devote the time and energy to create our full vision of what this game can be. The stuff you're seeing here is only a fraction of this game's potential: please help us get the whole way. In exchange, you'll get the Terrestrial Edition right now (a playable version with the base concepts and a smattering of content to get you started). If you give us a little more we'll make more content for you too! Weapons, factions, and even new Frames entirely are on the table.
(We also have community copies available, and those higher tiers will unlock more too.)
What are you waiting for! Go get it!

"You were beautiful. Your antenna outstretched, piercing the heavens and reaching to god. Even if you fell eventually, you were salvation. You were the saving grace to humanity being the higher life form of them all. You shall be reborn. And from those ashes you will finally get your well deserved death."
