question about lancer tactics: with some modification, could it theoretically be used as a more automated version of a VTT? i've had the idea of making something similar to a tactics game, except multiplayer, the npc's are controlled by the dm instead of ai, and it'd have to be more of a framework you could easily add in any abilities/weapons you'd need, but part of me wonders if it's worth building the whole thing from scratch (as someone who would have to learn coding as well)
Not by us. Adding remote multiplayer is a huge swing (and has been the death of many projects), and we already are at capacity with the scope of "do a 100% port of Lancer to a CRPG".
For reference, Stardew Valley had an experienced dev from Chucklefish dedicated to adding multiplayer for more than a year (this was posted one year before the 1.3 multiplayer update released). We don't have anywhere near that level of resources.
That said, there's a neat project called IsoCON that is doing something like what you describe for Icon. The rules automation from what I've seen is very light (closer to having in-game reference ability text than AI-controlled units), but I think is a great model for what an game-specific indie VTT can realistically look like.

One of the things that I love, love, LOVE about the Lancer creative community is that we are not in competition with each other.
I talk regularly with other people who make Lancer content and we share ideas, check each other's work, swap stories, ask each other's opinions on things, and we don't have to worry about competing with each other, hiding things from one another that might give us a leg up.
People who buy In Golden Flame are probably also gonna buy Lancer Expanded Combat and Liminal Space, so I don't need to feel like Ralf or Ikiryo, PsiBomb and Vox are taking away potential customers that I could have or vice versa.

Super excited to announce that @gentrigger is gonna be making the mech sprites for Lancer Tactics! I've been a big fan of their work ever since I first saw it here on Tumblr. :)

feeling nostalgic about my first game
Starship Rubicon'll be 10 years old this year. I made it fresh off the back of FTL, back when roguelikes were newly on the rise and I was hungry to publish something.
It was unapologetically a Video Game — it had customizable spaceships, pew pew explosions, and a secret "spare the final boss" ending. What more did anyone need. What more can this cursed medium aspire to. (more, turns out, but not like a lot more)

Precision art lines and color spreads
I found the artist. Her name is Amika, she's an Architect, Artist and Entrepreneur.
"I had started The Oblivious Mind as a small business selling handmade products and making floral paintings. But over the years my art style changed drastically and I fell in love with abstract art. Now, I am a full time intuitive abstract artist whose happy place is around colours and paints. My art revolves around basic shapes, lines and dots with a touch of colour all combined together to create an intuitive composition. In this journey, ‘trusting the process’ has become my ‘mantra’ and getting lost in the creative process my routine."

Just pushed a handy NPC roster filter + bugfixes for Witchdice v1.2.2:
Added a name/class filter to the NPC roster.
LCP reader loads pilot skills from LCPs correctly. You will have to delete and re-add any LCPs to get them to start showing up.
Fix squad X button not always removing the right pilot.
Custom NPC system descriptions come through correctly.
Better e.g. "+1 difficulty to agility" detection in custom NPC system descriptions.
Better detection of NPC tech attacks (Hive, Nightmare).
Weapon profiles inherit tags from base weapon (reaper cannon).

More IRL Lego Lancer!
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
We played the Tomb of Delios one-shot by Katherine Stark. Some NPC comp / sitrep spoilers ahead.
I used the backs of old trivial pursuit boards for grids, egg cartons, poster tubes, and a big Roomba box + insert for terrain.
I coated the cardboard with this flour and glue paste recipe I found on youtube.
I found a bunch of cheap-ish large lego octogons and walls online for the modular buildings, then greebled them with misc urban details I collected from my local bricks & minifigs bulk by-volume bins.
Tumblr media
Our PCs were a Swallowtail artillery (callsign Bandit; an SSC plant in the union auxilliaries), Störtebeker striker (callsign Roadkill, silver-nanite kintsugi'd mechromancer), and Black Witch support (callsign Egret, disgraced princess (gotta be one of my favorite genders)).
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
The elite cataphract ended up playing trapdoor spider for most of the game; hiding in a magical healing forest (thank u support o7) and grappling PCs back into the forest with it.
Tumblr media
Its scariest turn was popping out, structuring the Bandit and destroying his siege stabilizers, and lassoing it back into the forest. Egret came to the rescue and finally did the cataphract in with perimeter command plate/impact lance/crit thrown tactical knife overwatch combo.
The Swallowtail never took any voluntary movement after deploying its siege stab round 1, but between rainmaker knockback, the aforementioned trapdoor spider incident, and allied ferrous lashes, and a few rams, it was pingponged around the map pretty significantly.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"Come out Rainmaker, I just want to talk."
Tumblr media Tumblr media
The final threat to the objective was when a bastion clambered up onto the pipeline to contest them. The Störtebeker (whose mini was having trouble standing up on the pipeline) pulled an indiana jones and just shot it down.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
For the pre-battle narrative section, I made two 4-step clocks out of lego and a minimap as the party visited various districts of the city. Both were totally unnecessary but I think added a lot to the IRL experience.
Tumblr media Tumblr media
All in all, it was a lot of fun! Things that worked well/could be improved on:
The aforementioned mini stability. I should add more baseplates to the minis to making moving and standing them up less finicky.
As cool as the egg carton bottoms are, having flat surfaces is just better. Going to stick with the tops going forward.
The grid ground floor worked great. I should trace more grids onto the egg cartons and larger boxes. I also made a few measuring sticks out of dowels and that was super handy.
Witchdice on phones continues to work well for PC character sheets.
I made a handful of status tokens that we could put next to mechs. They were handy for consumable statuses like lock-on, but less so for memorable ones like exposed and hidden.
We needed more little indicators for misc systems like Javelin Rockets and Iceout Drone.
It was fun to be able to follow up "how do you want to do this" with "you may now destroy the mini".

Thank you for the points! I still consider myself a beginner so these kinds of tips are very helpful.
In terms of the large bracket/SNOT/ball joints being lower on the chart, I suspect their lack of utility for me might be the scale I'm working at? On the left here is a build that I was following instructions for until I realized it'd be waaay bigger than any of the other mechs I was making. On the right is one of the larger mechs from my games for scale, which just doesn't have the space for the longer ball-joint pieces. But I can see how the ball joints would be an essential tool for larger-scale builds!

Re: grill, ha, I always forget about those. I'll add it along with the posing piece, thank you for the tips! And in retrospect yes the ingot piece does deserve better, I'll bump it up. Here's a new version! With a scale disclaimer!

(I was honestly expecting more controversy about the ink well. I think they're fine but have been disappointed about how weak the connections they tend to make are)
