calling this thing a quantum computer is like showing a photo of a blender that’s not plugged into the wall and saying “here is my smoothie” except if smoothies were a thing that aren’t even possible yet, and we’re still in the phase of learning how to use the blender to chop up fruit
about once a month an incredibly popular tumblr post about my specific field of research gets put onto my dash again which is lovely, glad to see people appreciating condensed matter physics on the timeline
but it also includes a very specific piece of sort-of-misinformation that is just slightly wrong enough to piss me off but not so completely off the mark as to justify me starting shit by correcting it. so i just have to sit here and suffer

ok fine i’ll make the post myself. This is a dilution refrigerator:
On the left is what it looks like when it’s been opened up for maintenance. On the right is what it looks like when it’s actually working (the gold bits get surrounded by shielding, they’re inside the white tube.)
A dilution refrigerator is a piece of equipment that takes a very small area (about the size of a makeup compact) and makes it very cold (about 1/10000 the temperature of outer space).
This is what many people call a “quantum computer”:
This is not a quantum computer. This is a dilution refrigerator with extra electronics installed in it.
The actual “quantum computer” that people are talking about when they show these photos is a nanoelectronic device around the same size as the width of your hair.
It is not currently inside the machines pictured above, since these are photos of a dilution refrigerator while it is open for maintenance. It will be put inside of them at some point in the future, when they are closed up and working.
The hair-sized nanoelectronic device itself is also not really a “quantum computer”, since we haven’t succeeded at making one yet. It’s more like a proof-of-concept of a thing that, if we could get it working, could maybe get made into a quantum computer in the future.
It doesn’t really matter, but calling a dilution refrigerator a “quantum computer” is a great way to instantly make enemies with every condensed matter physicist in a five-mile radius, because we don’t have anything better to do apparently

i’ve decided a Diluc/Kaeya/Julian podium in the racing drivers AU would probably consist of:
- Kaeya trying to dump as much champagne as possible on Diluc’s head
- Diluc attempting to remain dignified while considering the merits of decking his teammate (he can afford the fines)
- Julian drinking the champagne straight from the bottle because how the fuck did they get all the way up in 3rd as a rookie in an Aston Martin

ok for my Genshin moots this is how ragbros lore goes down in the F1 AU:
Kaeya is sent from India to Germany at 15 by his father, who was originally from Europe and has connections in the racing scene there
Crepus Ragnvindr’s “adopt that lonely kid” instinct kicks in and takes Kaeya under his wing and trains/promotes him alongside his son Diluc
Eventually the two of them both race for Ferrari, the team Crepus partially owns
When Crepus falls ill, Kaeya sees that season as his final chance to prove himself to his mentor
One race, Kaeya makes a risky move on Diluc attempting to overtake. Neither of them budge. They collide and both go into the wall.
Diluc emerges mostly unscathed, but Kaeya gains The Scar just beside his right eye.
Diluc places the blame for the incident — which put the final nail in the coffin on his championship bid — on Kaeya’s risky driving. Ferrari sides with Kaeya.
The Ragnvindr investment in the team dies with Crepus. Disillusioned, Diluc walks away to sign a contract with their biggest rival.
The AU picks the story back up when Diluc resumes racing at Ferrari, and with Kaeya, after three years trying — and failing — to win the championship with Red Bull Racing.

does anyone remember that old viral post that was like “What if your favorite book character was real, and one day they knock on your front door and say that you’re *their* favorite book character, and they’re here to change how your story ends?”
because no joke, reading that at 13 started my entire journey of selfshipping. like i started out imagining our worlds being able to cross over with each other, where i was fictional in theirs and they were fictional in mine and then we were able to actually meet
and that framework STILL influences how i do self shipping
legit that one offhand post has deeply influenced my internal life for the past 10-ish years

i love how the literal FIRST thing i did after finishing my final assignment of the year is to draw my boyfriend
posting it a THIRD time because I forgot his scar! In this AU his actual eye isn’t damaged because idk if you’d be able to race at this level with no depth perception. (It’s debatable whether it even is in canon — he *says* his actual eye is fine and he wears the eyepatch because he hates the scar, but he would have motive to lie about that.)
