More of my 'Sherlock Holmes through the lens of Discworld' thoughts, because why have one fixation when two will do
This week Holmes solved the case of The Blue Carbuncle, i.e. 'I stole a gem and hid it somewhere very stupid and now I cannot retrieve it from that place, oh no, this has all gone wrong, I am dumb'. The thief in question is James Ryder, a servant for the gem's owner who is framing John Horner, a plumber he called round to fix something in the house.
Anyway, not very important except to say Ryder does not get away with the crime even a LITTLE bit - he loses track of the gem immediately and it ends up in Holmes's living room and so does he. Horner meanwhile is sitting in a cell with the police not believing that he has no idea what they're on about.
When Holmes tells Ryder that he knows he stole it, Ryder collapses completely. He was already sitting down in a chair and somehow manages to fall on the floor, they have to give him brandy, then he begs pathetically:
Ryder threw himself down suddenly upon the rug and clutched at my companion's knees. "For God's sake, have mercy!" he shrieked. "Think of my father! Of my mother! It would break their hearts. I never went wrong before! I never will again. I swear it. I'll swear it on a Bible. Oh, don't bring it into court! For Christ's sake, don't!"
He does the obligatory First Person Narration Of The Whole Story that Watson always puts in here, and concludes:
"My sister thinks that I am going mad. Sometimes I think that I am myself. And now—and now I am myself a branded thief, without ever having touched the wealth for which I sold my character. God help me! God help me!" He burst into convulsive sobbing, with his face buried in his hands.
He is a horrible little man and he would have sent Horner to prison with no remorse whatsoever if he hadn't lost the gem, but honestly you can't help but feel a bit sorry for him anyway. Holmes certainly does, chucking him out of the house on the basis that he probably won't do it again, Horner will go free anyway if Ryder doesn't testify and "it is the season of forgiveness" - as well as the famous line "I am not retained by the police to supply their deficiencies." He's not a cop. He can do things like this, if he feels like it.
The Discworld connection is to the Hedge Argument Murder. (Incidentally, if you google that, the FIRST result is that there have been several of these in real life, before and after the book came out. Hedges are serious business.) Sam contemplates copper-ness in Night Watch...
Keep the peace. That was the thing. People often failed to understand what that meant. You'd go to some life-threatening disturbance like a couple of neighbours scrapping in the street over who owned the hedge between their properties, and they'd both be bursting with aggrieved self-righteousness, both yelling, their wives would either be having a private scrap on the side or would have adjourned to the kitchen for a shared pot of tea and a chat, and they expected you to sort it out.
And they could never understand that it wasn't your job. Sorting it out was a job for a good surveyor and a couple of lawyers, maybe. Your job was to quell the impulse to bang their stupid fat heads together, to ignore the affronted speeches of dodgy self-justification, to get them to stop shouting and to get them off the street. Once that had been achieved, your job was over. You weren't some walking god, dispensing finely-tuned natural justice. Your job was to simply bring back the peace.
Of course, if your few strict words didn't work and Mr Smith subsequently clambered over the disputed hedge and stabbed Mr Jones to death with a pair of gardening shears, then you had a different job, sorting out the notorious Hedge Argument Murder. But at least it was one you were trained to do.
People expected all kinds of things from coppers, but there was one thing that sooner or later they all wanted: make this not be happening.
In this lovely Christmas story, Holmes sees a man who wants more than anything in the world for this not to be happening - to just be able to take it all back - to be forgiven. Even though he's not particularly deserving. And because he's not a cop, he can give it to him.

Sweaters
"Yo Gory," Dimitri greeted with a bit of a smirk, "nice sweater."
Jim raised a brow because that's definitely not something Gregory would wear, but when he goes to check he saw that, indeed, the guy was wearing a winter sweater with several reindeers running in the center to form a circle around a reindeer head that's easily assumed to be Rudolph the red nose reindeer, not to be mistaken for his brother.
"Dude, what happened?" Jim said with a bit of a snicker, "Did you lose a bet?"
Dimitri laughed, "Must have." he said, "Because that looks awful."
"Shut up," Gregory scowled, but did nothing to hide the sweater's print, even if he had a coat that could give him that option. "I like it."
Now, Jim and Dimitri were staring at him incredulously. Even just looking at him, anyone can tell that the sweater wasn't something you would see Gregory wear. Throughout the year, they usually see him wear clothes of the greyscale, whether they were blazers, hoodies, T-shirts, or tank tops. This sweater was decidedly... Colorful.
Then, out of nowhere, a brunette wearing a winter cap jumped on Gregory's back while laughing happily. Meanwhile, Jim and Dimitri were wondering if the guy had a deathwish. They were soon gobsmacked when Gregory laughed as well, hands on the arms around him before he turned around. The brunette was placed back on the ground before Gregory leaned down to kiss him on the lips briefly.
"You wore it!" The brunette beamed.
Gregory smiled. "I said I would, didn't I?" he said. "When I said I liked it, I really meant it, Ryder."
"It's just... I usually see you wearing grays or black, sometimes red but more on the dark tones." Ryder fidgeted sheepishly. "I totally forgot I meant to give it to you when I was knitting it and made it too... Colorful, but I already had a lot of reindeer sweaters and I was making it to give it as a gift and..."
Gregory interrupted his rambling by kissing him again. "I love it, Ryder. I love that you made it colorful and the reindeer print;" he held the others' hands and kissed the knuckles on each hand. "because whenever I look at it, I'll be reminded of you and your bright spirit."
Ryder all but melts at the declaration before hugging his boyfriend. Gregory chuckled before leading him into the school building, totally and purposely forgetting to introduce Ryder to his friends.
"Huh," Dimitri blinked, "When his brother was teasing him about a secret lover, I thought the secret was there was no such lover."
Jim shrugged, nodding in agreement. "Ryder Nattura... Never would've guessed it'd be him." he said. "But they look cute together, hope it works out."
"Aw, does 'Death glare Hawkins' actually have a soft side?"
"Sure," Jim hummed non-chalantly, "it started when I chose to date a big baby like you."
Dimitri smirked, "I don't think I make one particular part of you 'soft' though."
The infamous death glare came out and Jim punched him on the shoulder. Dimitri was used to it, but damn, it was still hard. Still, that was Jim's 'I'm just being shy and don't know what to do about it so let me hit you' kind of punch.
"Hey guys."
Jim and Dimitri turned to see Rudolph come in with his arms hooked with Tony. They see him looking sullen, and realized the sweater that looked just as awful as the one Gregory wore.
"Greg's boyfriend made you one too?"
"No," Rudolph glared at Tony, "I lost a bet."
Tony laughed, "Be happy I actually let you wear something to school today, Rudy." he winked, "After all, no one appreciates your six-pack more than I do."

Happy Tuesday Ask-A-Thon! Thank you for following us (@ask-a-thon) from the previous blog. -- You don't have anon on, which is why you're getting an ask from Aster, the person who runs the blog because it's easier for me that way-- Now, on to your questions! [What are some of your favorite themes to write? Is this different from what you read? What about tropes?]
I'd say my favorite themes to write are actually the simple things in life. Slice of life, behind the scenes stuff that show it's not always progress and action and noteworthy events, scenes that are just breakfast, or falling asleep, grocery shopping, etc.
The twist being, I love writing those scenes for characters that just...don't seem like they WOULD be slice of life characters. I think that's partly why my world, Relan, is populated with powerful individuals. Ryder is strong enough to bench press a car, and durable enough to walk away after getting hit head-on by one with little more than a few bruises and maybe a hairline fracture in a rib, if even that, and yet...
He's just a guy. He's not some superhero, or powerful warrior, he's just...Ryder. The guy that DJs on weekends. And then there's Trace, an aerokinetic speed demon with a major habit of abusing his powers, but...he uses them for dumb stuff. Stirring his coffee, knife tricks, getting up after a fall, leaning on solid air pressure just because he can. He's just a guy, going through life one day at a time, complete with all that entails.
Meanwhile, when it comes to reading, I enjoy reading almost the exact opposite. Normal, mundane, "weak" characters finding or showing an unmatched inner strength by facing, and even succeeding, against gargantuan odds. Molly Weasley, not a particularly powerful witch, maybe even below average, single-handedly taking down countless Death Eaters and even Bellatrix in a duel to the death simply because her family is on the line.
Or Karen Murphy, from the Dresden Files, regularly facing down supernatural threats that tear through humans like tissue paper, with nothing but her sidearm and the guts to try it.
I adore reading about characters who are considered average, or even below average, taking on genuinely impossible odds. "Underdog", sure, but I enjoy reading scenes about characters facing odds they outright can not beat, and trying anyways. Even if they fail, nothing gets my blood pumping more than a character fighting with everything they have, even if they know they won't win. It's the motivation, the drive, the inner power that pushes them to do it that I love so much.
As for tropes, I suppose my favorite trope would be "Brought Down to Normal". When a highly powerful or even all-powerful being, who is accustomed to their power, suddenly loses it all and has to deal with being weak, or average. You can see it in Spider-Man 2, in Immortal Demon Slayer, Mighty Morphin Power Rangers: The Movie, and more. It's such a fun trope because the reactions range anywhere from "Well I used to be like this, I can do it again" all the way to full-blown panic, fear, anger, because their powers were so important to them or to what they needed to do.
Thank you so much for this ask ^-^ I loved answering it <3

911 Lone Star: 3x18 Coda
I get why we had an IC in the episode that wasn't Owen, but I think it's a missed chance to see Paul or Marjan in charge, with Owen and Judd out of commission.
It was the crash that captured TK's attention. He got up slowly as he saw the building come down again. Walking forward, he felt more than saw Nancy and Tommy get up next to him, both of them silent by his side.
There were voices around the site, people yelling and crying. In triage, patients were reaching out to them, asking for help. All of it reached him in a garbled mess, only one voice rising above all the others.
"Captain Strand!" Mateo shouted, first out loud and then into his radio. "Captain Strand, do you copy?”
Silence.
TK kept moving forward, unaware of anyone else around him. Mateo continued yelling, and TK barely breathed, waiting for that glib voice to answer back the all-clear. That he was on his way out. That he was alright, and that TK's life wasn't crashing down on him like the building.
Silence.
He reached Mateo just as Paul did, leaving Marjan to take care of pulling Judd and the other survivors down. The older firefighter glanced at TK, but TK barely afforded him a glance, reaching out to grasp Mateo's arm. The probie was shaking, or maybe it was TK, but either way, TK managed to get out, "Mateo, where is he?"
"TK -" Paul started, pulling on his arm.
He shook him off. "Mateo, which part of the building?"
Mateo bit his lip, looking at him desperately, scared. That was answer enough. TK swallowed, looking at the building again. A memory, one almost twenty years old flashed in his mind. Another building collapse, another day of hearing nothing from his dad.
"We need to go in."
He was moving before he even finished the words, racing back to the firetrucks. There were others around him, calling his name, but he ignored them all, going straight for their spare turnouts.
"Strand!" Tommy shouted, and he turned slightly to afford her his attention. His captain reached for his arm, holding it tight. "TK, you're a paramedic -"
"Cap, I can't leave him in there." Though he said it as firmly as he could, there was a quiver in there that he knew was audible to everyone. Behind Tommy, Paul and Mateo were talking together. Nancy helped Marjan check over Judd's group, but both women were shooting him looks. Judd, from his place on the gurney, was arguing with the paramedic that was trying to place an oxygen mask on his face. TK took all of this in, filed it away, and focused back on Tommy. "If he's hurt, he'll need a paramedic. All my certifications are still up to date, I need to go in with them." He swallowed, letting his fear cloak his voice for a moment. "I can't lose him too."
Tommy met his gaze squarely, and he tried to pour as much conviction and honesty into it as possible. For a minute, he thought she'd still argue, but she finally nodded. "This is still Fire's scene. Strickland!" Paul turned, jogging over to join them. "You're senior, with Ryder and Captain Strand out of commission?"
Paul blinked, glancing quickly at Judd and back again. "Judd's -"
"Needs to get to the hospital to get his leg checked out," Tommy said firmly. "And is on leave. This is your show, Strickland."
Paul looked more off-balance than TK had ever seen him look. Not that he could blame him. Their team had never been in this position before, but still, the hesitation burned. His dad was somewhere, possibly bleeding to death, and they were still out here and not inside. For the lack of anything better to do, he turned and pulled out the jacket and boots, pulling them on with seven years of muscle memory.
Meanwhile, Paul seemed to have gotten his wits about him. "Right, Marwani and I will grab a team -"
"You need to stay out here," TK interrupted. "You're the current Incident Commander."
The reminder was sour in TK's mouth. His dad had been IC but he'd still gone in. Like he always did. Risking his life and saving everyone. TK was guilty of thinking his dad was invincible longer than he should have, but now, staring at the rubble, he wasn't feeling as confident.
Paul grimaced, nodding. "Chavez, Marwani! Each of you, get a team of three and start your sweep to Captain's last known location. Get a backboard -"
"I'll get that," TK interrupted, pulling on his helmet. The weight was comforting, as it'd been ever since he'd visited the 252 as a kid. "I'm going in," he added when Paul opened his mouth, argument clear on his face.
Paul glanced over at Tommy, but she only shrugged. "Your call, Strickland." She stepped back, giving TK a once-over and nod, before turning back to triage. Nancy made to follow her, stopping by TK to give him a soft punch on the arm, meaning clear. He tried for a smile, but was sure it came out as more of a grimace. Still, she looked comforted and moved to help Tommy.
"TK -"
"Paul," he interrupted. "It's my dad."
He sighed, seemingly running out of energy to argue. "Alright, but you're under Chavez. He tells you to pull out, you pull out. Got it?"
TK agreed quickly, though even Paul likely knew it was a lost cause. Giving him no time to retract his statement, TK rushed to grab his bag and a backboard, joining Mateo at the bottom of the carnage.
"Just like old times, huh?" Mateo asked, his voice heavy and strained. Marjan, on the other side, seemed just as worried, though she spared a second to give TK an encouraging nod.
Looking at the wreckage, TK tried to keep his mind on the present, to stop the silence from deafening him. There was no ash in the sky, no reporters everywhere. This wasn't New York, and it wasn't going to take them three days to hear from his dad. TK wasn't going to let that happen. "Just like old times."

Ask Game: 🧠 and 😈
Not-Quite-WIPS... Honestly, where do I start!? I get new ones all the time! I'll stick to just two here:
1. Last Unicorn AU (Frozen - Kristanna; Helsa; Aroace Elsa): the 4 spirits have left the forest a long time ago, so Elsa is on the search for the illusive 5th spirit to help save the others. She gets captured by Honeymaren and Ryder for their zoo, but clumsy assistant Kristoff frees her and reindeer Sven. Then they meet Anna, who has been raised by rock trolls, in the forest. Then they meet Prince Hans and King Wesselton at the castle by the sea. One day I will set words to this one but not anytime soon...
2. Frozen MMORPG (tentatively titled "In Real Life") (Kristanna; Elsamaren; Hans/Anna; Kristoff/Ryder): A group of OCs (the Frozen gang with different names) play Frozen: The MMORPG together when the Honeymaren OC (who is into it) meets the Elsa OC and drags her along to play with her brother (Ryder OC) and roommates (Sven and Kristoff OCs). Elsa OC recruits her brother Olaf OC and sister Anna OC, though Anna OC is very unwilling at first. Meanwhile, Anna OC and Kristoff OC know and hate each other in real life, but they fall for each other in game as they help each other through break-ups. What will happen when worlds collide and they find out who they are in real life? I have nothing written for this, but it has to manifest bc it's my husband's prompt and he specifically requested it for a birthday/anniversary gift. So it has to become more than an outline in my head at some point in the very near future...
3. Oh lots of drabbles/one shot ideas for the Kristanna Halloween Days event. Still pondering those, but I do have outlines (in my head) for Haunted Arendelle (birthday present for an IRL friend that actually reads and likes my fic) and Spellbound (birthday present for me!). Haha! I shall leave you in suspense for those.
What do I do that my readers hate? I can't be sure, but I give my characters flaws and they make mistakes (sometimes huge ones) and there's consequences. For example, in one story, Kristoff is an alcoholic, and he gets arrested for his third offense drunk driving (no one gets hurt) and gets sentenced to 5 years in prison, and it lands him in a coma another time. In that same fic, Anna loses her temper and says some really, really mean things to someone that didn't deserve her harsh words. And doesn’t take the morning after pill even though she promised she would. Every time I post chapters like that I always assume people will stop reading, but they keep showing up. I'm not sure that doesn’t mean they don't hate me, though lol.
Also, I'm sure, taking huge gaps of months and months between chapters for preservation of mental health. I know I shouldn’t feel bad about that, but I can’t help feeling a little guilty. I actually do have every intention of finishing them eventually! Promises!
Thanks @true--north for giving me an opportunity to talk about my pre-wips! Do you have any WIPs (or pre-WIPs) you want to talk about?

Rockstar has improved and added tons of great features in the GTA San Andreas APK that all GTA lovers have been waiting for, here is a small list of the great new features and vehicles introduced in the game. Other than the missions, there are tons of things that players can do, wreaking havoc on the police (which is my favorite part), performing drive-bys at the rival gangsters, customizing your rides, messing around with the pedestrians, flying jets, and the possibilities are just truly endless here. Rockstar has even added more player abilities like climbing the walls and swimming underwater (something that other games lacked) which makes it even more exciting to play but we will discuss all the amazing features down in detail.īut somethings can never change and that is good like the mission-based story-line which makes the player progress through the game as they complete certain missions and tasks and based on those missions new player abilities, items, and city areas are unlocked which adds a touch of newness to the game as we progress through it. The game offers players to explore a huge open-world environment bare-foot or using hundreds of vehicles from cars, trucks, bikes, bicycles, airplanes, helis, hovercraft’s, jets, tanks, and whatnot.

THOMAS: HARTFORD WOLF PACK OPEN THE 2022 PRESEASON WITH A WIN
Tumblr media
HILLMAN CAPS COMEBACK IN WOLF PACK’S PRESEASON-OPENING VICTORY By: Alex Thomas, Hartford Wolf Pack HARTFORD, CT – The Hartford Wolf Pack opened the 2022 preseason with a rollercoaster victory. The club trailed 3-0 and 4-3 before taking a late lead that they would not lose en route to a 5-4 win over the Bridgeport Islanders. Defenseman Blake Hillman, who signed an AHL contract with the club over the summer, broke a 4-4 tie at 15:40 of the third period with his first preseason goal. Hillman collected a loose puck in the high slot and wired a wrist shot by Henrik Tikkanen to give the Pack their first lead. The goal would stand as the game-winner in the club’s exhibition opener. The Islanders jumped out to an early 3-0 lead, scoring a trio of early powerplay goals to put the Wolf Pack in a hole. Daylan Kuefler opened the scoring 6:09 into the contest with a redirection from the slot of a Jimmy Lambert shot. The deflection snuck through the five-hole of Wolf Pack starter Olof Lindbom. The Islander powerplay struck again just 5:26 later to make it a 2-0 game. Vincent Sevigny fed William Dufour in the near faceoff circle in the Hartford zone. The 152nd overall pick in the 2020 NHL Entry Draft fired a one-time shot that cleanly beat Lindbom over the glove at 11:35 for his first preseason goal. Ruslan Iskhakov extended it to a 3-0 lead at 15:15, scoring a powerplay goal of his own. The Wolf Pack battled back, finally getting on the board at 17:51 on a powerplay of their own. Austin Rueschhoff gained the zone and sent a centering pass to Lauri Pajuniemi, who fired a shot at the Islander goal. Ken Appleby made the initial save, but Patrick Khodorenko found the rebound and jammed it home for his first preseason goal. Tim Theocharidis, in camp on a PTO, made it a 3-2 game 1:11 later. The puck took a favorable bounce off the end wall and popped right to Theocharidis, who collected possession behind the net and fired a shot off of Appleby and into the net at the 19:02 mark. Alex Whelan, who ended the 2021-22 season on a hot streak, scored at 2:47 of the second period to even the scoring at 3-3. Rookie forward Ryder Korczak collected the puck at the side of the net, then sent a pass over a sliding Appleby to Whelan. Whelan had a wide-open net to deposit his first of the preseason. The Islanders regained the lead with their first five-on-five goal of the game at 9:03 of the period. Jimmy Lambert took possession in the Hartford zone after a turnover, turning that into a partial breakaway where he beat Lindbom for his second-afternoon point. The Wolf Pack made an expected goaltending change at the 9:03 mark of the second period, as Dylan Garand came in for Lindbom. Henrik Tikkanen, meanwhile, took over in the Islander net at the start of the third period. The Wolf Pack again fought back to get the game even, scoring their second powerplay marker of the affair 3:30 into the final stanza. Louka Henault fed Lauri Pajuniemi at the top of the far faceoff circle in the Islander zone. The second-year Finnish forward blasted a one-timer by Tikkanen for his first of the preseason to make it a 4-4 game. Hillman would cap the comeback with his goal at 14:50, giving the Wolf Pack a 5-4 edge. The Wolf Pack conclude the 2022 preseason tomorrow, October 7th, at 6:00 p.m. when they play host to the Islanders. The game will be played on the campus of Trinity College at the Koeppel Community Sports Center, located at 175 New Britain Avenue, Hartford, CT. Doors open at 5:15 p.m. The game is open to the public and is a non-ticketed event. A $5 charitable donation is encouraged. HARTFORD WOLF PACK HOME Read the full article

Hercules and the Tyrants of Babylon
So the last few entries have been, for various reasons, pretty depressing.  I was determined to find something a little bit lighter, so I thought I'd offer you a nice colourful slab of My Cheese Steak. Our Hercules of the Week is a man named Peter Lupus, who looks a lot like Sylvester Stallone and uses the ridiculously David Ryder screen name of Rock Stevens.
The Babylonians used to take slaves from Greece all the time, but it's getting harder and harder now that Hercules is in town. Apparently on one of their raids, the slavers captured his girlfriend Queen Asperia, and now he's pissed.  King Vaneek of Assyria has also learned that Asperia is among the slaves, and has decided to buy her and marry her in order to be king of Greece, too.  Queen Taneal of Babylon drugs him and wheedles the secret out of him, and her two brothers, King Salmanazar and King Azul, agree with her that Asperia has to die... but secretly each is plotting to marry Asperia himself and murder his siblings to claim the throne!  Meanwhile, Hercules and King Vaneek find themselves in an 'enemy of my enemy' sort of situation, but that doesn't mean they like each other, either. We all know that the only ones leaving this movie alive are Hercules and Asperia, we're only watching to find out how they get there.
As Hercules and Maciste movies go, Hercules and the Tyrants of Babylon is pretty entertaining, honestly.  Costumes and sets never look real but they're very pretty and do their job of placing us in an ancient, semi-mythical past.  There's not a lot of subtlety to the characterizations – Hercules is heroic, Asperia is willing to suffer to save her people, Salmanazar is belligerent, Azul is shrewd, and Taneal is ambitious.  I might complain about this, but it's about as much characterization as people in mythology usually get and so it works.  There's lots of backstabbing (some of it literal) and machinating going on, but never so much that we can lose track of it all.
Tumblr media
Both the plot and the visuals are full of wonderful b-movie bullshit.  We've got Hercules throwing around sytrofoam rocks and trees – the people these hit know they're supposed to act as if they're very heavy, but sadly nobody was able to tell the horses. There's a bit where a guy in the Babylonian marketplace puts a snake on his head for no particular reason, which is the clear front-runner for episode stinger.  Plot points hinge on people rasping out messages to Hercules as they're dying, always expiring before they can finish.  Characters stand around arguing about who betrayed who first.  Hercules arrives in Babylon in disguise and then immediately blows his own cover when he sees some injustice he can interfere in.
Tumblr media
My very favourite of all these bits of nonsense is the completely inexplicable fact that Babylon has a self-destruct button. This takes the form of a giant wheel in a cave beneath the city.  It has all these chains attached to it, and when the wheel is turned they will wind up and tear down all the buildings!  Taneal tells us that it was built by Daedalus, who created the Labyrinth, but she never tells us why it exists.  I guess it's supposed to destroy the city so that an enemy can't capture it?  But in the last moments of a siege, who the hell has time to get a hundred slaves down there to very slowly tear the place apart?  It makes no sense!  I love it!
Hercules and the Tyrants of Babylon also stands apart from the crowd of such films in a number of ways – specifically, Herc never bends prison bars or drinks a love potion!  Going into the movie I was sure we were going to get the usual thing where Taneal, having fallen for Herc's rippling pecs and rock-hard ass, would feed him a tincture and then be all smug about having stolen him from Asperia.  To my surprise, the movie never even entertained the idea!  Taneal is not above using her looks to manipulate men, but she has a lover and never even considers dumping him, not even for King Vaneek.  Movies like this are so fond of using promiscuity as a shorthand for evil in female characters that it's kind of shocking.
(On a considerably less shocking note... do I even need to mention that all these Mesopotamians are played by white actors? Didn't think so.)
There's even a couple of really nice moments here.  King Vaneek brings gifts to the rulers of Babylon, praising Salmanazar for his skills in war and Azul for his in politics... and then tells Taneal how beautiful she is and basically propositions her in front of the entire court.  He, a sexist jerk, doesn't see anything wrong with this behaviour, but Taneal, already annoyed with her brothers for going behind her back, definitely does and you can see it on her face.  This scene isn't referenced openly again but it lurks in the back of your mind throughout the rest of the film, as Taneal seeks to be rid of these foolish men who think they're above her.  Her boyfriend is subservient to her as his queen and while the movie wants us to consider this a form of weakness on his part, Taneal clearly considers it appropriate and even sexy.  This makes her the only one of the four royal villains who comes near to being sympathetic, and made it even more surprising that she never develops a crush on Hercules.
Tumblr media
The other is in Salmanazar's attempt to find Asperia among the captive Greek women.  He ties them all to poles in the middle of the desert and says the first to tell him who the queen is will be rewarded.  After a couple of days Asperia decides to reveal herself in order to end everybody else's suffering, but the other women take a page from Spartacus and all join in declaring that they are the Queen of Greece!  In a way this succeeds, as Salmanazar gives up on this tactic in disgust and has them all released, but it's also a moment of tragedy, as Asperia despairingly realizes the people she's trying to protect are too loyal for their own good.
The only thing that kind of ruined the movie for me was that the climax seemed to come on way too fast.  The rising action is fairly sedate, and so when everything suddenly comes to a head, it feels like it's just not time yet.  This sorts itself out pretty fast, though.  Once you realize that the dominoes are falling, it only takes a moment to get back into the rhythm of it.
There are several things I find myself thinking about while watching this movie, but the main one is that the Hercules and Maciste films are basically superhero movies with a coat of ancient Greek paint, and it's interesting to compare them to their modern counterparts. The general formula of a lone hero versus odds that would be insurmountable to anybody else is intact.  Multiple villains and a woman in need of rescue are standard.  One of the things superhero stories have become somewhat infamous for in recent years, though, is the 'twist' ending, to the point of writers altering the story if they think the fans are close to figuring it out.
A lot of keys have been tapped about why this is poor storytelling and how it grew out of the 'no spoilers' culture online.  My own main complaint about it is that a story isn't even about its end. Stories are about their middles – the beginning and the end are just that, but the part we enjoy is the journey from the one to the other.  Hercules and the Tyrants of Babylon is a perfect example.  There's never a moment when we're not absolutely sure that Salmanazar, Azul, and Taneal are all doomed and probably Vaneek too, and that Hercules and Asperia will save the Greek slaves and walk off into the sunset.  The movie's job is not to subvert these expectations, but to fulfill them in an entertaining fashion.
Tumblr media
This doesn't even mean the movie can't surprise us.  We're not at all surprised that the three co-rulers are plotting against each other.  Taneal tells us that their father wanted his three children to rule in concert – anybody who's even tried to order a pizza with siblings could have predicted how that would turn out!  Nor are we particularly shocked that Vaneek orders his followers to kill Hercules once they've secured Asperia.  The surprises come in the form these various plots take and how they're thwarted.  We certainly didn't expect Taneal to try to murder her brothers by pulling the whole city down on top of them!  Then the ending, when everything turns out exactly the way we expected it to, is not disappointing at all.  It's satisfying and reassuring to see good triumph over evil.
Although, it must be said that in a lot of these films, evil ends up destroying itself – this is one of those, as the siblings all end up killing each other before Hercules can bring the city down on their heads.  Rather than defeating the three tyrants, Hercules defeats thousands of ordinary Babylonians who were just going about their day and probably didn't know what kind of shit their rulers were up to.  Nor, despite the title, does the movie bother to establish whether the three are particularly tyrannical... although they can be cruel to their slaves, so maybe we're supposed to assume they're not much nicer to the free citizens.
We're not supposed to think about any of that, of course, and one of the movie's successes is that for the most part, we don't.  Hercules and the Tyrants of Babylon isn't a good movie, but it never pissed me off, its badness made me laugh, and I enjoyed it for as long as it lasted.

9-1-1: LONE STAR REACTION
This reaction is for season 3, second episode “Thin Ice” which originally aired on January 10, 2022. The episode was written by Trey Callaway & Carly Soteras and directed by Bradley Buecker. Spoilers ahead!
Tumblr media
If you thought last week’s season 3 opener was something, episode 2 kicked things up a notch. When we last saw our beloved heroes of the 126, two of them seemed to be in a mortal danger. While trying to locate a missing girl, Paul ended up trapped underneath a collapsed building. Marjan ended up driving off the side of the road during the snowstorm after failing to convince Owen to come back to the 126. So are our two firefighters safe? Let’s start with Paul and then work our way through the rest of our main characters to see how they are fairing during this storm.
Tumblr media
As mentioned previously, Paul became trapped underneath a collapsed building after attempting to rescue a volunteer. When Paul finds the girl, he gets her to open up about how she is angry that no one around her notices her. Paul confesses to her that he is angry, too - he is angry that his family (the 126) is displaced and he wishes they were a unit again. Meanwhile, Judd, Mateo and the other first responders outside are trying to find a way inside to rescue Paul and the girl without causing the building to collapse any further. To further complicate their efforts, the sprinkler system accidentally turns on covering Paul and the volunteer in icy water. Now the issue is life and death. In a move reminiscent to when Judd slapped the young boy who had stepped in a bear trap while trying to flee the huge forest fire last season, Paul screams at the volunteer to keep her conscious. Paul eventually starts to lose conscious, gradually succumbing to the cold, but his boys swoop in to save him at the last minute. Paul is safe and sound!
Tumblr media
Let’s talk Grace! While Judd and the rest of the 126 are out in the storm making rescues, Grace is safe and sound at the dispatch center doing what she does best. After rescuing Paul and the volunteer, Judd heads over to the dispatch center to bring his wife her favorite tea and her favorite snack. Not much happens with Grace this episode (although we may get quite a bit of her in the next episode) but I loved seeing her interaction with Judd. Grace and Judd are one of my favorite pairings on television right now and I think they make the perfect couple. I suspect that Baby Ryder will be making her debut very, very soon so I am excited to see Judd and Grace as new parents in the upcoming episodes.
Next on the list is Owen. One of the major complaints I have seen about this show online is that the show focuses way too much on Owen and not enough on the other characters. I don’t exactly agree with this sentiment. I think Owen grounds the show but I believe the show has done a good job of giving us insight into the lives of the other characters. With that said, it seems like this season is doing it’s best to make sure that Owen doesn’t overshadow the other characters. His storyline this episode is one of my favorites and it was fun to see him act opposite someone outside of the 126 for a change. I usually get leery on these shows when they introduce a love interest for the main character but I quite like Julie Benz’s Sadie. I think they have great chemistry. I also liked the storyline with the illegal immigrants. What a twist! The guy Owen and Sadie ended up helping ended up being the bad guy. I honestly didn’t see that coming. Hopefully, Owen will realize that being a hero is in his DNA and after this storm is over he will come to his senses and come back to the 126. I’m interested to see what happens next!
Tumblr media
Remember the older couple from the last episode who were out trying to save the turtles during the snowstorm? Remember how they stumbled upon the little boy trapped underneath the ice? We next flashback to the events leading up to the boy falling into the icy drink. The boy was left at home alone while his mother was working. When the boy asked his mom if he could go outside to play with the other kids, she told him to stay inside - rightfully so - because not only was it not safe, the boy also has asthma. Of course the boy disobeys his mom - this is television after all - and he ventures outside and falls through the ice into the water underneath. We then flash-forward back to the future. The older couple calls 9-1-1 and Grace dispatches Tommy, TK, and Nancy to save the day since the other first responders are booked and busy. The three paramedics use their limited resources to attempt a rescue of the boy who is completely submerged under the ice. Because TK has more experience with performing rescues, he goes after the boy and ends up falling in the water himself. Long story short, the paramedics are able to revive the boy but now TK has life-threatening hypothermia. At the end of the episode, we see TK hooked up to several machines and when Carlos asks about his condition, Tommy delivers the somber news line of the episode when she tells him, “We need to find his father.” So, TK is in pretty dire straight but I honestly don’t think this show is going to kill off one of it’s beloved characters. As my mom pointed out during the episode, this is the third time we’ve nearly seen TK die. The first time in season one when he overdoses, the second time in season one when he is shot and now he is fighting for his life at the beginning of season 3. Oh, and his house was burned down last season and he was knocked out during the hostage situation. Poor guy has been through enough!
Tumblr media
Our last stop is Marjan. Last time we saw Marjan, she crashed her car after leaving Owen’s cabin. We see her at the end of the episode, waking up after the crash. She attempts to use her phone and sees that she has no single. Marjan has spent so much time trying to save the 126, it looks like the 126 may need to band together to locate her and save her. Let’s hope they make it in time! Whew! This episode had a lot going on. We managed to save one character and now another character’s life hangs in the balance. Next episode, it looks like we will get the conclusion to the massive snowstorm. So, naturally I have some questions going into the next episode. Will we finally discover why TK and Carlos ended their relationship? Will TK have any complications from nearly freeing to death? Will Owen be able to get the band back together? Will Grace have to give birth on the side of the road? I guess we will have to wait two weeks to get the answer to our questions. Until next time ...

Honeymaren had made her decision and she did not care if Yelana or her father would punish her. Elsa had to be warned, at all costs. Even if it meant exposing Northuldra's secrets. She set out on a search and ran all over the camp, and around it. But Elsa was nowhere to be found, and neither was her sister. They had to be together somewhere in the woods. This search could take hours, too long maybe and then it would be too late.
Fortunately, Myrtha ran into her and as luck would have it, the healer knew where Elsa was right now. Honeymaren thanked her briefly and hurried off. Myrtha looked after her, shaking her head.
Some time later she already saw the four large monoliths looming before her when Anna and Elsa turned the corner of one and apparently were about to return to the camp. She saw from a distance how Elsa looked up at the big stones and asked Anna something while gesturing. Anna apparently was about to answer her when she saw Honeymaren running towards them in haste. She paused in mid-word and stared at her in surprise.
Elsa followed her gaze and waved. Honeymaren waved back hesitantly, hoping that she herself was not one of the topics of conversation between the two of them. She shook the imagination off of her mind, for Elsa had promised that her nightly conversation would remain between the two of them. Then she reached the two sisters somewhat breathless.
She bowed briefly to Anna and said, “Queen Anna, Elsa, I ... I have something very important to tell you both and I'm afraid you haven't much time left.”
Both looked at her confused and Elsa asked, “Not much time? Time for what? What happened, Honeymaren?”
“You are all in great danger and must leave immediately.”
“Wait, what? Why in danger?” Anna asked and held on to Elsa's arm, her eyes wide open in concern.
Tumblr media
Honeymaren briefly thought about how to explain it to them, but then chose the blunt variant. “There's someone after you. He is chasing everyone from Arendelle.” Honeymaren kneaded her fingers in excitement and took turns looking at them with pleading looks. “He's out for revenge and wants to kill both of you!”
Anna's grip on Elsa's arm grew stronger and she gasped for breath in terror. But Elsa ignored Anna's reaction and made a step towards Honeymaren. She took her hands in hers. “Who, Maren, and why?”
Tumblr media
Anna's head started spinning and she didn't know anymore what she should be more worried about now, the unknown threat or that Elsa was so familiar with Honeymaren and even called her 'Maren'. She closed her mouth and lowered her arm, which now hung strangely uselessly in the air when Elsa had released herself from her grip.
“Revenge for what and why such a hurry? We'll be leaving tomorrow morning anyway,” Anna added. “Can the Northuldra not protect us until then?”
Elsa let go of Honeymaren's hands again and walked back and forth a few steps, brooding.
Seconds later, however, Anna realized it and she slapped a hand in front of her mouth, but immediately lowered it again and said, “He's magically gifted, isn't he?” Elsa's head was spinning at those words.
Honeymaren nodded and then shrugged her shoulders, “Yes, most likely ... I mean, we don't know for sure. All we know is that he's very dangerous and may even have Ahtohallan trapped under a magical fog shell.”
“He did what?” it burst out of Anna a little louder.
“Ahto-who-what?” Elsa added uncomprehendingly and Anna had to grin involuntarily for a moment when she remembered the exact same question she once asked her mother.
Then Elsa suddenly remembered that Honeymaren had mentioned that name once before, when they were both sitting on that beach. She thought about it for a moment. She had to find out what it was all about, because it seemed very important.
Honeymaren's gaze changed from one sister to the other. “I am forbidden to say it, but I have already said too much. Then I might as well tell the rest, right?”
“Go ahead,” Anna and Elsa said almost at the same time.
“He is the son of our former fifth spirit, who was brutally killed during the dam construction. His name is Kolgrimr, and he believes that all your grandfather's descendants must die in retribution for this act. So you must leave here as soon as possible ... please!”
Anna and Elsa looked at each other, then Anna nodded and said, “Then let's go back quickly. I'll tell Kristoff to get the wagon ready for departure immediately. Turning to Honeymaren, she quickly added, “In the meantime, can you please let Yelana know that our plans have changed a bit? We want to thank her for her hospitality before we leave.”
Honeymaren pondered briefly if this might suggest to Yelana that she had revealed secret things, but then nodded to Anna. “Yes, of course.”
Then they walked back to camp together. Elsa put her arm around Honeymaren's shoulder and said, “Thank you for warning us and caring so much about us, Maren. She looked at Elsa smiling and just nodded without saying anything back. She had done what was necessary and right in her eyes. Now all that was left to do was to make the rest work and Elsa would be safe.

Gyda looked thoughtfully at her son, who was chewing the last piece of smoked meat with relish.
“We should perform the ancient ritual. It will bring you luck and give you the necessary strength and speed,” she finally said. “I still have the old sacred drum and most of the ingredients for it here, I only need a few certain things and they have to be fresh.”
Kolgrimr looked up. “Mother, please ...,” he said with a bored tone and with an incredulously gaze.
“No, my son, there is no excuse this time,” Gyda said, “You know ... I usually did these kind of ritual every time your father ventured on a dangerous mission and he always returned safely. Nevertheless ... the last time we spoke and I begged him to perform the ceremony, he refused. He was so upset and in a hurry. He wanted to warn all our people about the true intentions of that bastard liar Runeard and that was the last time I saw him alive. Kolgrimr, I loved your father so dearly ... if he had accepted my offer ... perhaps everything would be so different now. He only had trusted in his shapeshifter abilities and in the nature spirits when he left. I lost your father, I won't lose you too.” He stared at her and then nodded.
“Good. I'll be back soon,” she said, grabbed an empty basket and left the kota.
In the meantime, Kolgrimr lay down on his fur and crossed his arms behind his head. His thoughts turned only to his plan and he tried to imagine the scenery in the camp and plan each of his steps in advance. He swallowed the last shred of meat, closed his eyes and grinned.
~~~
Meanwhile Kristoff was in the camp with Olaf and kept an eye out for Ryder. He also wanted to check on Sven. His old buddy surely wondered if he had forgotten him; he thought.
He finally found Ryder on the large lichen meadows pasture and watched him feeding a carrot to Sven.
“Hey! Where'd you get that carrot, buddy?”
Kristoff came closer, scratched Sven's head and looked at Ryder questioningly. Ryder just shrugged his shoulders. “From your wagon, of course. Sven sniffed at it and then made me take a look. You must have overlooked the carrot, it was hidden under a blanket.”
“It wasn't hidden, Ryder. I was saving it for Sven on the way home. Now I have nothing left for him until Arendelle,” Kristoff accused him gesticulating.
Ryder made a face. “Oh ... I'm really sorry about that. I didn't know it, and Sven just wouldn't let up.”
Kristoff looked reproachfully at Sven and shook his head. “Buddy, buddy ... that's why I'm the only one who gives you your beloved carrots and no one else. Now you'll have to wait till we get back home.” Sven looked at him sadly and Kristoff made him answer in his unmistakable way, reaching under Sven's chin and miming in a deep voice, “Sorry Kristoff, but the smell of the carrot was just irresistible. Why didn't you bring more of it?”
Ryder laughed out loud and slapped Kristoff on the shoulder. “There you go, pal. Sven doesn't feel well taken care of.”
Kristoff grinned and rubbed the tuft of fur on Sven's head. “Sven, buddy, how could I have known in advance that we were gonna be here so long. Next time I'll plan for such eventualities, of course, I promise.”
Ryder's smile slowly disappeared and was replaced by a thoughtful expression. He sighed. Of course, Kristoff didn't miss that and asked, looking at him, “What's wrong? Was there something else going on with Sven?”
“No, no, that's not it. It ... well ... oh, I don't know if and how to tell you this,” Ryder dithered and Kristoff raised an eyebrow while he kept on stroking Sven.
Ryder looked at him seriously. “If you love your fiancée Anna and really care for her and her sister then you all have to get out of here, if possible today.”
“What? What are you talking about?” Kristoff's attention was now completely focused on Ryder, and he looked at him earnestly and with concern.
“I can't tell you any more, but please trust me, it's in all your best interests ... please.”
Kristoff just stared at him. Ryder looked back with a begging face. So they stood there helpless for seconds and Sven's gaze flitted from one to the other. Olaf, who stood between them at the side, did the same and his head bounced from left to right and back again.
“Alright.” Kristoff put his two big hands on Ryder's narrow shoulders and nodded. “I trust you. We'll leave today.”
Kolgrimr had already prepared everything in his mind and now it was once again time to let his mind wander and to see and feel what was going on in the camp. He sat up and took up a mediation position. Then he took a deep breath in and out and began to prepare himself mentally. He closed his eyes again and the first images and fragments of thoughts of the Northuldra, just doing their work, slowly took shape in his mind. But before he could really focus, the flap on the kota flew open and Gyda came in, wasn't exactly quiet and immediately started digging around in her things. He angrily pulled a face and opened his eyes again.
“You have disturbed me in my meditation! Couldn't this wait a little longer?” She was stooping down and looking for something underneath one of the furs. “Mother?”
She looked up briefly, but at the same moment found what she was looking for and held up a small wooden pestle. “There it is. It really just rolled under the fur.” Kolgrimr looked at her in annoyance. “What? You can do your meditation later. The ritual is important and I need the pestle to pound the herbs and spices.”
Then she gathered everything else together and put a small pot over the tiny fireplace in the middle of the kota. She sat down on her wooden stool, pulled out her sharp knife from the belt sheath and began to cut some of the herbs, all the mushrooms and other ingredients she had collected into small pieces in the pot with practised handles. She added some water from a leather bottle and then began to crush the rest of the herbs and pieces of dried lichen in her mortar.
“You start the fire,” she said without looking up.
Kolgrimr shook his head, but then did as she asked. The bone-dry wood soon began to crackle loudly and the flames licked around the pot. Gyda added two smaller logs and fetched a bundle of plant stems unknown to him, tied together from a hook on the wall of the hut. She held one end into the fire until it began to smoke, pulled it back and blew on the smouldering spots until more smoke developed.
She finally handed the bundle to her son and said, “Here, take this and wave the smoke in your face. Inhale it deeply.”
While Kolgrimr complied with her request, she poured the contents of the mortar into the pot and began stirring with a wooden spoon. An intense and anaesthetic smell spread through the small room. When the contents began to boil, she took the pot from the fire and poured some of the greenish contents into a small bowl, which she handed to Kolgrimr.
“Drink this,” she said, and at the same time took the smoking bundle out of his hand again.
He drank it and, disgusted, grimaced. Gyda nodded contentedly and fetched her old troll drum from the wall. She looked into her son's eyes and when she saw the first signs that it was working on him, she began to beat the drum softly and rhythmically, murmuring words that sounded so different from the Northuldra language. Meanwhile she slowly circled around him, never letting him out of her sight for a moment. At some point he finally began to sway back and forth, his eyes took on a glassy glow and his breathing went by in fits and starts.
Gyda smiled and her chanting became louder and more haunting.
They met almost simultaneously in the camp and each of them had a serious expression on their faces. They looked at each other and in the first few moments nobody spoke a word. Each of them had the vague feeling that his counterpart already knew about everything. Eyebrows furrowed in surprise and Honeymaren sighed, “Ryder ...” He was probably absent for a good reason. She shook her head, put her hand on Elsa's shoulder for a moment and said, “I'll go and tell Yelana.” Elsa just nodded.
“Well ...,” Kristoff said, “It all seems to be a done deal, but in case you two know more ...,” and he looked alternately from Anna to Elsa and back again, “... then I'd love to know what the reason for all this is.”
Anna nodded and repeated in short words what they had learned from Honeymaren. She asked Kristoff at the end that he should prepare the departure right now.
Kristoff's eyes had become wider and wider as he listened to her and his hands clenched into fists, but then he just nodded and answered, “Already done, the wagon and Sven are ready at the edge of the forest. What now?”
“We'll wait for Yelana, to say goodbye and then we'll leave,” Anna replied quietly, looked over at Elsa and put her hand on her shoulder for a moment. “Home at last.”
It was only a few minutes later, and Yelana, Myrtha, and Honeymaren turned around the next kota and came towards them. After a short greeting, the healer walked up to Elsa and took her aside for a short talk.
“So you decided to leave us earlier,” Yelana noted, leaning casually on her staff with both hands and looking around. “I hope you were happy with everything and nothing upset you?”
“Yes and no ... I mean, everything was fine and there was no cause for trouble,” Anna said, smiling somewhat crookedly at her bumpy wording. “We all just wanted to thank you for your hospitality and for all you've done for Elsa. Thanks also for putting up with us for so long. I hope we haven't disturbed you all too much.”
“It was our pleasure and you could have stayed as long as you wanted,” Yelana lied, waved away and put on her rare smile.
“Thank you very much, but I have urgent royal duties waiting for me, which unfortunately I only remembered this morning,” lied Anna back. “After all, we have been here a little longer than planned.”
“Then I wish you all a safe journey home. Now I have to get back to my duties. For anything else you may need, Honeymaren is at your disposal.” Yelana just bowed to Anna and nodded goodbye. Then she turned around and left.
Myrtha's conversation with Elsa was also over and she said a heartfelt goodbye to each of them. As she left she waved to everyone again.
“She's really very nice,” Elsa said, waving back.
“What did she want from you?” Anna asked curiously.
“She questioned me about my condition and seemed satisfied with everything. She wished me luck.”
Anna nodded. “The Northuldra really have a good healer in her. She has taken good care of you.”
Elsa smiled as she looked after Myrtha. “Yes, that's true.”
They stood like this for a little while longer, until finally Kristoff clapped his hands and said somewhat sarcastically, “Ladies, the wagon is ready. Shall we?”
Anna and Elsa nodded and Olaf ran ahead.
At the edge of the forest Anna and Elsa got into the back of the wagon and Olaf sat before them on the wagon floor. Kristoff sat in front and took the reins in his hand, even though he didn't really need them for Sven.
Honeymaren, who had come along, now stood there a little bit lonely and looked at Elsa one last time. She suddenly became very sad and pulled a face. What if Elsa never got her magic back and therefore stayed in Arendelle for good? It would be goodbye forever; she thought. A tear came out of her eye and ran down her cheek. She wiped it away quickly so that no one would notice it.
“Ready?” Kristoff asked and looked behind him.
“Yes, we can drive off, Kristoff,” Anna said.
“Everybody take care of yourselves, okay?” shouted Honeymaren and raised her hand to say goodbye when Kristoff let the wagon start to roll.
“You too, Maren!” called Elsa back and waved to her.
“So, Sven, take us all home,” Kristoff called to Sven and he joyfully made a leap forward, which carried Olaf with verve between the surprised sisters and made him laugh out loud.
“I love such carriage rides,” Olaf raved and grinned at them.
When they were almost out of sight, Honeymaren was still standing there motionless, her gaze directed into the distance. Then she sank to her knees and started sobbing unrestrainedly.
The star begins a libel trial against a U.K. tabloid that called him a "wife beater." No matter the verdict, he's destined to lose.
If there's a single word to describe Johnny Depp's status at the moment, I'd go with zugzwang, which chess aficionados know to be the moment when a player basically gets cornered into making a move that will inevitably lead to an even more inferior position. On Tuesday, the star actor appeared in a London courtroom to take on the U.K. publisher of The Sun for characterizing him as a "wife beater" in the print edition of an April 27, 2018, online article.  Unfortunately for Depp, it seems to be a defamation trial that's a no-win situation.
Depp appears to think that success is achievable at a proceeding that will last several weeks and feature all sorts of inside details about his life plus celebrity friends including Paul Bettany and Winona Ryder. Depp is claiming that during his tumultuous marriage to Amber Heard between 2015 through 2017, he didn't actually throw a phone at her, slap her across the face, and grab her by the hair, as she once testified in a deposition during one of the nastiest divorces in Hollywood history. Perhaps Depp will play audio tapes in an effort to claim his ex-wife was the abusive one in this stormy relationship. It won't matter because there's really no reversing the damage that Depp has incurred these past few years.
That should have become obvious on June 26 when it was revealed that Disney was working on a new Pirates of the Caribbean, this time featuring a female-fronted cast led by Margot Robbie. In other words, at the exact moment when a U.K. judge was deciding on whether to actually proceed with Depp's libel suit after the actor's attorneys breached a court order by failing to turn over a series of text messages concerning the procurement of drugs, Depp may have lost his most lucrative role. A source tells The Hollywood Reporter that Jerry Bruckheimer would like to at least nod to the popularity of the Captain Jack Sparrow character in the coming film if the controversies die down, but at this point, Disney is resistant. Depp is too controversial. (Disney didn’t respond for comment.)
So Depp will pursue a favorable verdict and a nominal damages award from a trial that's playing out under English defamation standards — in other words, where the burden of truth is on the news publisher to establish rather than Depp. Meanwhile, over the next few weeks, amid an international pandemic, Depp will surely incur additional reputational harm from these prying court proceedings, the impetus for which was a column questioning J.K. Rowling's defense of Depp being cast in the adaptation of her book Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them. It's hard to sue one's way out of controversy.
Given this situation, it's no wonder Hollywood insiders are increasingly puzzled over Depp's moves. I spoke to several industry attorneys and publicists, all of whom offered some variation on the theme that the public would likely have forgotten Depp's years-old troubles but for court actions that keep reminding everyone.
“One of the things you’re always balancing is, how do you respond to accusation? Do you add more fuel to the fire or let it dissipate?” asks Howard Bragman, a longtime crisis manager in the entertainment industry.
Says Neville Johnson, an attorney who has previously brought suits against tabloids but questions the star plaintiff's wisdom here: “Depp doesn’t need the money [from any damages award] and it is not going to enhance his reputation.”
How did Depp find himself at the point of zugzwang? More and more, one has got to question Depp's reliance on attorney Adam Waldman. Depp has many attorneys, and the others seem to be the ones actually doing the hard work in court, but Waldman has become Depp's mouthpiece and also looks to be the lawyer who has emerged as the star's svengali of sorts.
Who is Waldman?
A search on Google (where he referred this reporter instead of agreeing to an interview) yields some clues, though hardly anything definitive. Unlike most attorneys, Waldman maintains no bio page these days. A few years back, Waldman's D.C.-based Endeavor Group did have a working website, but no longer. A trip to the Internet Archive reveals that Waldman once took credit for overseeing "all corporate aspects" of the landmark antitrust trial United States v. Microsoft, being the "principal architect of several ground-breaking initiatives" including the Center for Global Development, and even predicting the 2009 financial crisis with a "seminal law review article" authored all the way back in 1993. That would be when he was a student at American University, which did indeed confirm his graduation in 1995.
Waldman, according to reputable press reports, seems to have been involved in various dealings with the Kremlin, Russian oligarch Oleg Deripaska, and Wikileaks founder Julian Assange. He had a lucrative ($40,000 per month) lobbying contract with Deripaska, was registered as an agent for the Russian government, visited Assange nine times in one year at the Ecuadorian embassy in London, apparently in connection with efforts to strike a deal with the DOJ, and more. His associations have become fodder for intrigue among reporters and lawmakers even if there’s a lack of public evidence of anything more than Waldman having a talent for landing recurring, if minor, roles in real-life Russian political dramas.
I'd say that Waldman's foray on the periphery of the industry hardly matters, except that it appears Depp is publicly burning bridges with the sort of abandon that one hardly ever sees among big Hollywood stars. Depp's recent legal pursuits include battling his former money managers over the disposition of hundreds of millions of dollars; splitting with longtime transactional attorney Jake Bloom; and, of course, continuing to face off against Heard again and again and again, including in a separate defamation suit against her over an op-ed she wrote for The Washington Post. That latter case is currently scheduled for trial in Virginia in January 2021.
That's a lot of legal work, and Waldman appears to have taken on a central role. As Stephen Rodrick put it in an often-cited Rolling Stone article, "Waldman seems to have convinced Depp that they are freedom fighters taking on the Hollywood machine rather than scavengers squabbling over the scraps of a fortune squandered."
Waldman is also conducting a public experiment on social media. In a nutshell, do tactics of preaching to a choir of a small number of Twitter accounts achieve anything outside of politics? Most attorneys don't pick fights with the media during a big case, particularly in the weeks before trial. Not Waldman. For weeks, he's been goading reporters at The New York Times who apparently are investigating him, and he's been whipping his followers into a frenzy with attacks on Rodrick, Variety ("Saudi Arabia's Variety"), THR ("too much corruption") and other journalists and news publications. (That said, Waldman may not be above going to his own favored media outlets. Depp's attorneys have been accused in court papers of leaking to outlets like The Blast, which seems to be to Depp what Fox News is to Trump.) He's also litigating on Twitter, presenting evidence procured from Depp's cases, and overall, exhibiting highly unusual behavior for a working attorney.
To what end? That one is very hard to answer. But if anyone in Hollywood is ready to take on "fake news," the ticket of Depp-Waldman should be deemed real contenders.
In the era of #MeToo, allegations of misconduct get attention — and deservedly so — but some newsrooms have traditionally made a distinction between behavior in the workplace and domestic conduct, with the latter being perceived as tabloid fodder. This time, though, an ugly divorce proceeding has transformed into something quite more.
Alas, the trial of John Christopher Depp II v. News Group Newspapers Ltd has now begun.
On July 7, Depp himself took the witness stand and accused Heard of being sociopathic, a narcissist, and completely emotionally dishonest. He insisted her "sick" claims of abuse are untrue. And in opening statements, his attorney David Sherborne said, "This is not a case about money. It is about vindication."
Depp, in fighting a battle against an unflattering headline, is merely going to draw more attention to The Sun's accusation that he's a "wife beater," especially once Heard gets on the witness stand. At the end of it all, no matter the verdict, this trial will likely do nothing to tamp down the controversies that have tarnished his career. He's elevated a tabloid columnist's random musing into something that's going to be covered by serious news outlets for weeks, months, years on end.
For that, Johnny Depp should regain his senses and fire his lawyers.
Vindication ain't possible. The damage is done. That's the only thing a successful libel claim shows.
(before I start T have a TikTok acc that will have this series but with pictures just go to giantforlife gacha thats not my user but i wont show if you dont put gacha)
Roles: (Alex) she is a giantess/wolf held captive in a lab with her love she found when she got there, and is currently pregnant with her son. (Axel) A size shifter and a demon who is at the same lab as Alex as her boyfriend who he tries very hard to please. (Jace) A size shifter like his dad has horns like him as well but has the same hair color and is a wolf like his mom. (Ryder) one of the scientists who works at the lab but he mostly takes care of the giants, size shifters and the supernatural humans that they capture is also the co-owner of the lab. (Kayla) Ryders co-worker who helps him a bit and keeps him on track and takes care of things when he cant.
the story: As Alex had been tossing me up and down through the air I was laughing a lot but telling her to stop because I was dizzy. Yet she would not stop until...
Alex: A-Axel my water broke! Axel: What! *He'd size shift so He am a giant and I'd try comforting Alex as I scream for help so Ryder could help her give birth* Ryder: What's all the noise in here!? Axel: She's in labor please help! Ryder Oh god already!? *He'd run over to Alex and try to help yet he couldnt do much because he was only so small* (after Alex gave birth) Alex gave birth to a beautiful baby boy who she named Jace. Axel was removed from Alex's cell and put in his own so they could sleep. (in the morning) Alex would slowly wake up realizing they had chained her arms and legs to the floor. Alex would stand also realizing they took away her child which made her furious. Alex: what the.. Where is my baby!? *she growled loud* Give me my child!! Alex would pull on the chain trying to break free to find her newborn son. Meanwhile they gave Jace his very own cell. Ryder was in there testing a new drug they made that is made to make your hair grow so you could use it on bald people and people with cancer and it should always grow back.
Ryder: Its ok little one this just might hurt a teeny bit *He said while slowly putting the syringe into the baby's scalp* Soon we will see if you have your mother's or father's hair. * he would inject the baby with the drug to see if it works on him* When Ryder does so just within a few minutes the baby had a whole head of hair but for the child this was painful so they had left him there crying. (a few years later when Jace is 5 and can talk pretty fluently) (also to fill you in Ryder had been working at Jace making him think he's nice) *Ryder walked into Jace's cell with a smile on his face* Jace: Mr. Ryder! Your here! Ryder: Hey kid *He runs to Jace* can I have uppies bud? Jace: Mhm Mhm! *Jace picked up Ryder holding him close to his face putting on a big smile* Ryder: alright why don't you open your mouth now so I can see those sharp teeth of yours! *Jace had opened his mouth letting Ryder check up on him* Ryder: Nice! lets just see how sharp your teeth are. *He reaches out to Jace's mouth and feels his teeth as he does he loses balance and falls into Jace's mouth* Jace had closed his mouth the moment Ryder fell in and this being the first human he had ever had in his mouth he was curious and liked the way Ryder tasted. Ryder: J-Jace! P-please sp-spit me out. Jace muttered no trying not to open his mouth for Ryder to escape. Jace's mind: I'm sure mommy wouldn't mind if I ate Mr. Ryder for a bit right? Ryder: J-Jace Please! It's very scary in here. *Jace tipped his head back and swallowed sending Ryder down his throat to his stomach* Luckily his mom taught him that when he eats someone he can control if he wants to have stomach acid in his stomach or not so Ryder was completely fine. Ryder had struggled inside Jace's stomach though he was yelling for help but found it useless. Kayla his co-worker had been wondering where Ryder was because he was supposed to take Jace to see his parents so Kayla came into the room and took Jace with her into his mom's cell. Jace: Mommy, Daddy! *His parents both worried about him raced over to hug him as Kayla left* Alex: Honey, why arent you at your full size you know I get annoyed by you being a bit short. Jace: sorry mama I'll go to my full size now *Jace grew a bit going to his full size to please his mom* Axel: what happened you were supposed to be here a while ago! Jace: well uhm I- I ate Mr. Ryder. Alex: You what!? Honey, please spit him out you could get in big trouble for that! *Jace spit Ryder out and Ryder was disgusted coming out all wet covered in spit* (Alright thats all for now if this gets enough reposts and likes I will continue with this I have the whole series planned out so don't worry. Cya!)
