NaNoWriMo Day 2: Herald At Dawn

***I'm doing half a nano (25k not 50k) cause I have too much other shit to do (school)***

Alexandrina and Asa walked down the airship docks, Alex looking for someone specific. Instead, she found the dockmaster, and crossed over to his small stand. “Ms. McLelland. And here I thought I had seen the last of you,” he said, coolly. “Never, Mr. Thomas. Is Captain Sparks’ ship in?” “You know I cannot answer that, miss.” “And you know that there are more than a few people who would be very interested to hear of your involvement in the recent trial.” “Really? What involvement, do tell.” “Nothing much, truly. Bribery, lying under oath, that sort of thing.” The dockmaster’s scowl deepened. “Dock thirty-three.” “Thank you.” Alex smiled thinly, and began the long walk to the very end of the wooden pier that jutted out into the open air. As they walked away, Asa asked, “Do you have blackmail on every official in the city? He was about the fourth person I’ve seen you do that to.” “Oh, no, only about half of them.” “Ah,” said Asa, in a manner that implied he still thought that was an absurd amount of people to have blackmail material on.

Notes: It was a lot of typing up and editing stuff again today, but I did add some new things (blackmail discussions and Alex's fear of heights, specifically) so I'm pretty proud of what I did. I didn't write as much as I did yesterday, but I still went over the goal, and I'm glad about that, cause I have two marking period (1/4 of the school year) tests coming up in a couple weeks (14th (physics) & 15th (algebra 2) of november) and I want to have a couple hundred words worth of buffer in case I only get like 70 words on those days.

About: When Ginny and her parents move to Nebraska, their car breaks down in a strange town called Pottsville. By day, it's almost too charming and perfect, but by night, Ginny quickly learns that it's crawling with monsters created by something called the Dirge. The Dirge lives behind a crooked trap door in a basement, and it's happy to grant children's wishes for a price. If Ginny wants to save her parents, she's going to have to find a way to defeat the Dirge and the children of Pottsville once and for all. I received a free e-ARC through NetGalley from the publishers at Macmillan/Henry Holt. Trigger warnings: character death, abduction, captivity, injury, weapons.

Thoughts: I had to push myself through most of this book, and had I read a sample of the writing style beforehand, I probably wouldn't have picked it up. It reads like something an actual middle schooler would write at times, in addition to being rather long and drawn out for a middle grade novel. It starts with an extended car ride that could have easily been skipped, and it can't maintain the mystery or horror for as long as it needs to when things do finally get going. I quickly got bored with all the running and chasing and hiding. There's a reason that Goosebumps books are only about a hundred pages long, just saying.

I didn't vibe with the main character at all, and she's another variation of the selfish, entitled brats that populate this book. Yeah, kids can be as selfish as adults if not more, but unlike the children of the corn, there's nothing remotely sinister about these. McLelland also pushes believability quite a bit with Ginny being able to both repair cars and drive them for being, at most, twelve years old. However, I did enjoy the lore in this story. There's some interesting German folklore on the background of the Dirge, and it was probably the only time I felt invested in what was happening. Regardless, I doubt younger readers would be motivated to stick with it.

KM: For me, both Advent and Hanukkah are important pieces to focus on during the final month of the year. Each year, I read Advent writings, and I try to celebrate Hanukkah with my Jewish friends. Both have a sense of “light coming into darkness,” and this moves me deeply.

Herald At Dawn: Writing excerpt thingy

Hi! I wrote a thing, and then I went and did the thing that I almost never do and typed it up! Its from the very beginning, at about the tail end of the first scene.

Alex laughed, and turned the door to James’ office. She closed it behind her. “Hi, James. Miss me?” James leaned forward in his chair. “Ooooh, whatcha got?” Alex grinned. “How’s rigging and bribing court judges sound?” “Oh, I like it.” He took the sheaf of papers she handed him and thumbed through them, then grinned. “Oh, this is brilliant, Alex.” She smiled. “Thank you, James. Any preference for the next article?” “Something that gets you a bit farther down on the police captains list of people he wants an excuse to throw in prison, maybe?” “But all the good stuff pisses Aubdurn off, that’s why its good.” “I know, I know, I just worry. Be careful, Alex, alright? Don’t stand in dark alleyways with strange men at ungodly hours of the night.” “What if I know the man?” “What you do in dark alleyways with men you know at ungodly hours of the night is not my business.” “Good! I’ll see you once I’ve got a rough draft, or at least something, then?” “Sure!”

Isidore- Aww see? Look here, its Jonah and Laken selling lemonade. I forgot about that.

Evelyn- They're precious. What happened?

Ashley- Puberty.

Evelyn- Ashley! I asked you to make yourself useful.

Ashley- I am! I told you that I was doing something! I found your files of old videos. Maybe Mrs. McLelland would want to see some videos of the party? Or there seems to be a very large amount of video's of Jonah trying on different outfits.

Evelyn- <laughs> Oh yeah, he used to say he wasn't one hundred percent sure on an outfit unless it also looked good on video.

Jonah- I don't think we need to see those.

Isidore- Oh of course not sweetheart. If it makes you uncomfortable we don't have to. I'd love to see the video of the party, can you send it to me?

Jonah- You can watch that if you want, I just don't think we need to watch anything with me changing clothes in it.

Isidore- Oh no, we won't watch those.

Evelyn- They wouldn't be very interesting anyways. Just a lot of talking about the clothes, the feel of the fabric, maybe some lunging. <chuckles> Put the party video on Ash.

***I just noticed that Jonah's scar is gone here... lol lets pretend its still there. Just excuse the laziness. I had to start a new save JUST to get the game working again and it has already crashed twice. So suspend your belief... again please. For the love of god. I want to keep going but the game has been such an asshole since I moved it to my new rig.

@gaiahypothesims I had to tag you! Tell me he's not flawless! XD He's so spot on I can hardly sit still on my chair! All of these are Ezra, and I love how I see both Willow, Jonah and also Andy in him, and he's supposed to have some Andy shining through, so I'm beyond happy with this result. Had to include the pirate, cause he'd totally show up like that for Halloween XD
