Translating Neuvillette’s Opening Chest (II) & Joining Party (I) Voicelines

UEEE SO YOU UNDERSTAND

(An attempt to translate based on what little I know of his character.) I will show the Chinese line, then the official English localization, then my English translation, then some thoughts on the word choice in Chinese, and English localization. For the first voiceline, I’ll also show the Japanese localization and my English translation of it, to support a claim.

THE FLEETING MOMENT OF ANTICIPATION UE UE

(@ EN ver: my, so formal Monsieur Neuvillette)

It feels to me like Neuvillette doesn’t know what’s in the chest, so he asks if the Traveler—who’s opening the chest—has found something nice. But then it seems he automatically assumes that the Traveler is disappointed at the treasure, so then he assures them that—and this is key—at least the split moment between opening the chest itself and seeing the treasure inside felt nice. (Morphologically, Mandarin Chinese doesn’t really have affix-based verb tenses like English so it’s a bit hard to explain.) It’s so sad… Why does he assume that… I mean, as players we might be more excited to open a chest than to see what random artifacts/materials/weapons are inside, but in-universe, why would Neuvillette say something like this, I wonder…

Though, 心绪 (xīnxù) is a literary word that means state of mind, but that word usually refers to negative emotions (compared to 心情 / xīnqíng which can refer to both positive and negative emotions), so I’m not sure why Neuvillette would use it in a positive sense. You could say it’s because he doesn’t understand human emotions well, but linguistically speaking, Genshin Impact text in general often has Chinese sentences in a strangely wordy structure or overly complicated/fancy word choice, to the point that it either feels like a weird translation, or that it’s just not a syntactic structure native speakers would use (e.g. using too many prepositions where it could all be omitted and simply implied)

Still, 心绪 alone doesn’t make the tone of the whole Chinese line formal, compared to its official English localization. I can’t comment as much on the Japanese localization, but content wise it’s much closer to Chinese, since the two languages are more similar… It seems the Japanese localization is politely casual too since he uses the casual verb form.

Another important thing: In the Chinese line, the second sentence starts with 至少 (zhìshǎo) which is at least, and ends in the question particle 吧 (ba) which marks uncertainty at the end of a declarative sentence. This makes the sentence structure something like a rhetorical question such as At least [statement], right? (E.g. At least it’s not raining, right?) even though it’s not marked with a question mark. This tone is… quite difficult to translate. It’s common in Chinese (and I believe Japanese too) for rhetorical questions or casual comments/observations to end in a period, but it’s not so in English (unless it’s social media, like Tumblr, right).

yeah why not seems kinda fun -> (optional step) the writing system is crazy bro -> damn theres no WAY im gonna remember any of this shit -> genuine interest and fascination with the differences between languages and needing to Know more

and its because of the stupidest reason for starting learning it in the first place

#me personally i only started french because i didnt want to do spanish or german #and we had to take a language #now look at me. ap student gonna take the exam in less than two months #did one course for asl because i needed to fill a credit and it seemed easy enough to do online #and i was so interested by deaf culture and i was having sm fun with learning signs #but i never continued it for?? some reason??#i didnt take japanese any further than hiragana and some katakana but it was fun learning the writing system #not that i remember more than maybe 30% of it #and now im trying to learn ukrainian on duolingo and other outside sources #partially just bc i was curious #but now im like. very entranced by it #i have a google doc vocab list and everything #its very fun for me :) even if i dont use it in everyday life and if i drop it after a week #its also so fun to speak #I NEED TO. I will never forgive the English translation of the full "stay awhile you are so fair" quote because that is not the same meaning as in the original English and maybe I am wrong and maybe my English is not good enough for that or I'm interpreting this wrong but there is a difference between "bearing something", accepting your fate in a defeated way, even if you do not want to (idk bearing has a pretty negative connotation to be because it's more.... suffering adjacent? I suppose? To me at least) and accepting it in a way that reads like "if it comes to this then I am already beyond saving and I will gladly accept my impending ruin because I brought this upon myself and with that I will live" in German he uses the word "gerne" that means you accept something in a positive way and that you're fine with something and you have no problems with it and that got lost in the English interpretation and I know poetry is different and difficult because of metrics and wordflow and the having it sound right while not losing the intended meaning but it's such a shame to me because the people who don't know the original German can't go insane over Sanctuary the same way I do and that is just such a pity.

My advisor for my Master’s Program in Second Language Acquisition is a Sociolinguist specializing in World Englishes.

I really want to do my degree paper on enregisterment, and she’s the only sociolinguist in the department so it would have to be with her.

She refuses to learn about enregisterment.

She suggested I start exploring translanguaging instead.

MC Messes With The Linguistic Nerds

MC has a fun hobby. They make up fake words to try to convince the cast that they’re saying real words that exist from the world that MC came from. Some people, the ones who avidly study/consider themselves well-read, who admire this MC, wanting to learn these new words so they can use them organically in a sentence and understand MC better. MC then makes more fake words to either see how far they can take it, or to keep the ruse up because they’re in too deep. Maybe the characters who got invested are gonna kick MC’s ass if they discover this was all a ruse. Maybe MC just doesn’t wanna disappoint them? Whatever the case, MC doesn’t wanna get caught.

MC makes them so convincing that the characters genuinely believe that this is a real cultural rift between them. The characters and MC’s languages share enough words that they can communicate really well, so where did their communities diverge that prevents them from knowing THESE words?? If there’s a linguistics nerd who is fascinated by the differences, they try to research into a nonexistent rabbithole of linguistic research to find if there’s any words in the history of their world that connects to these, to see if there was a time when their worlds were connected in the past where they could have diverged, and what the implications of that could be. If MC has been ripped from their world and has no way of getting back, the characters could see this as a very real lead to discovering MC’s origins. Extra points if MC starts forging documents to make the rabbithole seem legit. Extra EXTRA points if the linguistics nerd(s) realize(s) that these words couldn’t be real and just starts forging their OWN documents to trip up MC and see how they react. Came to me because I was watching a funny video where someone was challenged to make up a fake word with at least 3 syllables and try to convince people that it was real by using it organically in a conversation. I made up a word and really liked it, and then started playing around with more words for funsies and just got the inspiration for this concept. I was like “I could totally see an MC doing something similar and convincing the casts of these games that these words were real.” Maybe there’s a character or two who knows that these words aren’t real and is messing with MC to trip them up.

ok but the thing is that "hurt" is an adjective, verb, and noun. so the linguistic poeticism is still there, albeit in a slightly different way. yes, "hurt" as a description of a person's state holds true across tenses because it is indeed an adjective, but the fact remains that it's a lexicologically interesting word! personally, what i find really neat is that "hurt" is both an intransitive verb used for the person being wounded and a transitive verb for the act of wounding someone. it's an intriguing concept to think of pain as something that draws connections between people. something that weaves together victim and perpetrator in some inseparable way. that you can't hurt someone without it changing you as well. idk what exactly that says about pain as a human experience, and it's a lot of using imagination and metaphor to extract and extend meaning from language, but it's still fascinating!
