My first fanfic in a minute, if anyone would be interested. Since I guess WIP Wednesday is. A thing. :D

XXX

“All the way up there?”

“What do you mean, all the way up there? Of course, all the way up there, you see any other entrance to this stupid tower?”

“Keep your pants on, I’m just asking!”

“Why does it matter?”

“Well, unless Will suddenly developed the ability to fly — ”

“Will can’t fly, be serious for once — ”

“I am, how else do you think the kid got up there?”

“He went missing, Steve, he was probably kidnapped — ”

“And what, his kidnapper hefted an eleven year old all the way up there without falling to both their deaths? Never mind the missing door, there aren’t even any steps or handholds the entire way up! Here I thought you were smart, Dustin — ”

“Look, can you just go up there and check? Sun and moon, it’s like talking with the wall sometimes, honestly — ”

“All right, all right!” He sounded irritated, and Eddie felt his limbs lock up completely. He should’ve known those damn kids would come back, despite Max’s best attempts at scaring them off, but he hadn’t anticipated them coming back so soon, let alone with someone that sounded so much older than them. “Look, if I go up there, will you guys let this whole thing go?”

So much older and much more willing to climb his way up.

“I swear, Steve, we’ll never ask you for anything else. Ever.” That got a snort from the guy they brought — Steve, apparently — and a muttered response that nevertheless brought forth a cheer from the kids that sank Eddie’s heart like a stone. The feeling only grew worse at the sound of something hitting the tower, steadily growing louder. It was briefly drowned out by the boys shouting encouragement from below, and again when there was joined shrieks from them and Steve as Max flew out of the tower again, hissing all the while. Eddie’s eyes darted around, breath coming in shaky gasps even as he tried to find a weapon to save himself.

He dove to the side, just out of sight of the window, right as Steve found the ledge of it. He was panting loudly, muttering curses under his breath as he pulled himself over.

“Hello?” He called out as his boots hit the floor. He was barely winded, Eddie thought, despite the height of the tower and how strong he’d have to to climb it without the use of any support. His footsteps stumbled a bit, most likely because he tripped over Eddie’s hair. He cursed, muttered a quiet “what the fuck?”, and then raised his voice again. “Will? Are you up here? Hello?”

“Do you see him, Steve?”

“Keep it down!” Steve yelled out the window, and Eddie had the sudden mental image of pushing him out of it. He didn’t, because even he knew a fall from that height was deadly, but he was running out of options if he didn’t want to be found. El chittered above him, catching both his attention and Steve’s, if the sudden turn on the wood floor was any indication. “Will? It’s me, Steve. Are you ok? Talk to me, kid, I just — shit!”

“There’s another one?!”

“Steve!”

“I’m fine!” Steve called back, “I don’t think Will is up here, but someone definitely is.” There was silence that followed his statement, and Eddie found himself looking frantically around him to find a makeshift weapon. The longer it took him to find something, the harder his heart beat; he could barely hear Steve as he stepped around the tower, calling softly for him as he did so.

The bottle Eddie dropped earlier caught his eye and in a last minute panic, he darted forwards and grabbed it tightly. Something about it — the movement, the sound most likely — caught Steve’s attention and he turned to where Eddie was hiding behind a pillar.

“Hello?” He said again, cautiously, and he began walking towards him. Eddie felt his breath coming in short gasps and right as Steve sounded close enough — “Whoa, shit, fuck, wait wait wait — ”

Eddie didn’t know he could move that quickly until right this moment; he had Steve pinned to the wall, bottle at his neck and shirt gripped tightly in his own hand. Steve looked panicked, his eyes wide and his breaths coming in just as shortly as Eddie’s had just moments prior. The kids were calling from below, trying to get an answer from Steve, and Max had made her way back inside; she was screeching at them, swooping down around their heads and back up into the rafters.

“Wait, wait, hold on — ” Steve gasped, tilted his head back further in order to get away from the sharpened bottle edge. “Hold, hold on, please — ”

“Who are you?” Eddie asked, and he was grateful his voice was as stern and steady as he wanted it to be. He tightened his grip on both the shirt and the bottle to hide his trembling, and focused on keeping eye contact with the strange man in his tower. Max screeched again, making Steve tense up even more and his gaze flickered from Eddie’s to Max and back. “How did you find me?”

“I didn’t, I swe — ah, ah…”

“Don’t lie to me.” Eddie said quietly, firmly. Steve gasped again, pressing himself further back into the wall. “How did you find me?”

“Kids!” Steve gestured with his hand to the window, but Eddie’s eyes never left him. He stayed silent and Steve took that at his opportunity to continue. “Boys out there, Lucas and Dustin and M-Mike, they found the-the tower — ”

“Why were they looking for me?”

“You?” Steve shook his head slightly, looking just slightly confused amidst the panic and terror in his eyes, “they, we don’t know you? Friend of theirs, Will, he-he went missing, recently, kids’ve sort of, of been going off on their own. Trying to find him.” They stared at each other in silence for a moment, Eddie taking the information in while Steve licked his lips and looked like he was trying to be as unthreatening as possible. Taking another shuddering breath, Steve whispered, “I won’t tell them you’re here, swear. I can just say I was mistaken, there’s no one here. Just the bats. You have my word, they won’t know about you.”
