I wonder what the largest shellfish is?
Edit: Okay this post is getting a LOT of traction. What is going on?
Edit: Fucking hell.
This post has set off a fucking MINEFIELD!!!
What have I DONE????!!!!!
I’ve lit the blue touch paper and found there’s nowhere to run to!
I’ve summoned a wolf only to unleash a tiger!!!!! Made of fire! And nails.
Probably….
Idk.
Edit 2: 5,000 Notes! Good god! What the HELL do you want from me. I’ve never had a post of mine take off like this until now.
Some got close like the one about homeowner associations (fucking powertripping middle aged mediocrities!) which got at least 1.5k notes but this is the most I’ve gotten on a single post so far.
Anyway.
AND this post has officially gone to hell. (6,666 notes)
Edit: 8,000 notes! Holy shit!
Edit: 9,000 notes!!!
Edit: 10,000 notes!!!!!!!!!
Edit: 15,000 notes!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Edit: 20,000 Notes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
WHO THE HELL TURNED OFF THE REPLY THREAD FOR THE REBLOGS?!
Okay never mind it’s back. For now at least.
Anyway.

So I bought this painting of the Cutty Sark in a charity shop for 50p. And on the back it’s got this placard - pretty cool, right? Obviously it’s staying
Obviously the frame is a little busted and it can’t hang but that’s a 10 minute fix.
So I remove the card first thing to save for later and —
It’s a fucking menu. And apparently a really fancy one - it got French words. I’m laughing my ass off because some guy cut out a description of the Cutty Sark from a restaurant menu and stuck it to the back of a painting of said ship. At this point I’m having a blast and joking that “Oh, what’s next, the painting itself is gonna be from the dessert menu, I bet!”
IT WAS THE FUCKING WINE MENU. And this has to be ancient because £1.25 for a bottle of wine?? 20p for a glass?!
So quite a few decades ago some guy stole a menu, took it home, then cut out the painting of The Cutty Sark and it’s description and framed it to presumably hang on their wall. And now it is in my home, on my mantle and whenever I have guests over they’ll go “Oh what a nice picture of a ship!” But they won’t know. Only I will know that it is in fact the front piece of a wine menu. Like. The process behind how this came to be.
I’m keeping this forever.

OMFGs I might have an opportunity to join a maritime excursion on a research vessel for 10 days sometimes in 2024 and I'm so hyped it would literally be such a great step into my future goal of getting into maritime biology OMFGs I'm so hyped right now even though I'm probably not going to get the place ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh

another example where the localisation team really pulled out their good shit: Lor Starcutter. in Japanese, it’s only “Lor” (spelt ロア) - there’s no suffix. but in English they added “Starcutter”, which is such a clever double pun.
it’s a “star cutter” because of the way it cuts open star-shaped portals. but it’s also a star cutter - a type of boat that’s known for being fast! that’s so smart! I love it! instead of a starship it’s a starcutter! the localisation team made up a whole custom suffix to expand the Lor’s character and themes and they killed it.
ignoring the fact that it’s very clearly modelled after galleons, of course x)
and i can’t talk about the Lor’s name without mentioning how tied up in Magolor’s name it is - the localisation team didn’t miss that either. to be frank, Magolor’s name was translated really well too, it’s just that the meaning behind his name was very obvious so it was much simpler to give him an elegant translation.

I did some research at the maritime museum because it’s been driving me nuts not knowing exactly what type of ship type the Revenge is and I wanted to confirm for sure. She’s not a brig, a barque, or a brigantine- she’s a full-rigged ship, with a luteen-style mizzen sail on her mizzenmast.
Whether or not it would be accurate to call her a frigate is questionable- the definition has changed a few times over the years. By 18th century standards, she doesn’t have enough guns- from what I can tell, she’s only got 18 at the max, if all her gunports are filled, (though we only ever actually see the 6 that are on the deck)- and a ship needed 28 to qualify as a frigate. However, in the 17th century, that term applied to ships that were small and built for speed, which we could technically apply to the Revenge.
She could also be referred to as a sloop-of-war- though these were not built as three-masted ships until decades after when the show is meant to be set, anachronisms aren’t exactly a primary concern of OFMD, so. Sloops-of-war were equipped with only one gun-deck, and typically had only 18 guns like the Revenge, as they were unrated. Given all of that, I think this is the best description to use if you want something cooler than just calling her a ship.
bonus image of my rigging and ship structure labelling and horrible handwriting notes under the cut!
