Some of my all-times favourite Storytelling things:
The satisfaction of a complex, seamlessly executed plan, be it a heist, an escape or catching a Bad Guy
The Enemy of My Enemy is My Friend
The Calvary
The Magnificent Bastard, no matter if good or bad or something in between. You know the type: charismatic, hypercompetent, various degrees of intimidating, always has a plan.
Two Against the World
The character that attempts the impossible because Someone Has To
Character A who would burn down the world and walk through hell and back for Character B*
Beaten villain of the week hangs around and integrates into the Band of Heroes
Hypercompetent character pretending to be someone far less impressive, either as a POV or a twist
Snarky narrator, the occasional fourth-wall break
Hurt/Comfort actually making an appearance in a published story please and thank you. Just... characters being allowed softer emotions outside the Romance genre.
*So Margarita Nikolayevna, Sam Gamgee and Hua Cheng walk into a bar...

Question: from what I’ve seen from admittedly brief research, there’s some reason to believe the Maria scene isn’t so incorrect. But like I said i haven’t done any heavy research and I just wanted to know more
The Maria scene will be fully debunked in Helen Azar’s new Maria book, but until then here’s what she has to say about it in small quotes:
“As far as cake and ‘compromising position’, no there's not even a ‘nugget’ of truth in it. If there was even an iota of reliable evidence of it and/or any corroboration of it in primary documents, I'd be the first to say that, as I have no issue with it if it actually happened. But it was completely made up. In the new Maria book we do explain why the ‘compromising position’ myth is based on nothing but a very faulty translation in a certain book where it was originally mentioned for the first time, and then being repeated by others until it became ‘fact’.”
A few more quotes:
“in King's book it was based on a faulty translation. George Hawkins and I explain it all in the upcoming Maria book. After King's book came out with that nonsense, it was subsequently repeated by a few others, including Rappaport, who assumed it was factual - which gave it more credence, and so it became accepted as fact, although had no basis in reality whatsoever.”
“Rappaport repeated what King and Wilson said in FOTR where this cake story originated. There is no reliable legitimate source that corroborates this. Period.”
“The guards are not allowed to interact with prisoners at all, at the risk of imprisonment, or even execution. There are no reliable primary sources that cite this so called ‘cake incident’. It didn’t happen. Nor was there any negative attitude towards Maria from the family members.”
Also a quote from Margarita Nelipa on the situation:
“Having thoroughly researched this matter recently, I can confirm the persistant allegation that has been directed against G. D. Maria Nikolayevna for several years in the West, is baseless.”

It was [Koroviev] and his gang who had made Margarita Nikolayevna and her maid, the beautiful Natasha, disappear from Moscow. Incidentally, the investigators had given this matter special attention. They had to determine whether the women had been abducted by the gang or murderers and arsonists or whether they had run off with the criminal band of their own fee will. Based on the absurd and muddled testimony of Nikolai Ivanovich and taking into account the bizarre and insane note Margarita Nikolayevna had left her husband, in which she said she had gone off to be a witch, and considering the fact that Natasha had disappeared without taking any of her things, the investigators concluded that mistress and maid had both been hypnotized, along with so many others, and abducted by the gang while in that state. The quite likely possibility also arose that the criminals had been attracted by the women's beauty. However, the motive behind the gang's abduction of a mental patient calling himself the Master from a psychiatric clinic still remained a mystery for the investigators. They could not find an explanation for that, nor could they learn the name of the abducted patient. Thus he vanished into the files under the lifeless tag, 'No. 118 from Block One.'

'Oh yes! I almost forgot...Messire sends his greetings. He also asked that I invite you to go on a little outing with him, if, of course, you wish to. So, what do you say to that?' Margarita nudged the Master with her foot under the table. 'I accept with pleasure,' replied the Master, studying Azazello, while the latter continued, 'We hope Margarita Nikolayevna won't refuse our invitation?' 'Of course I won't,' said Margarita, again nudging the Master's foot with her own.

The investigators were not particularly surprised when Nikolai Ivanovich produced the prank certificate stating that he had spent the night at Satan's ball. Nikolai Ivanovich strayed from the truth somewhat in his account of how he had flown through the air with Margarita Nikolayevna's naked maid on his back, transporting her to some devils' den on the river for a swim, and how, prior to that, Margarita Nikolayevna had appeared naked in the window. For example, he did not deem it necessary to mention his appearance in the bedroom, holding Margarita's discarded chemise in his hands, nor did he say he had called Natasha Venus. His version of the story was that Natasha had flown out the window, climbed on his back, and lured him out of Moscow... 'I was forced to do it, I had to obey,' said Nikolai Ivanovich, and he concluded his tale with a plea that not one word of it be told to his wife. He was promised that it would not.

'What are your orders, my dear lady, regarding the disposition of your retinue? I personally have no need of them.' At this point Natasha, still naked, ran in through the open door. She clasped her hands and shouted to Margarita, 'Be happy, Margarita Nikolayevna!' She nodded in the direction of the Master and again turned to Margarita, 'You see, I always knew where you were going.' 'Maids know everything,' noted the cat, raising his paw sagaciously. 'It's a mistake to think they're blind.'
