Tell Tale Signs
Tumblr media
MINORS DNI +18 Only
“Is daddy gonna make it?” Isabella your daughter asked as she watched you put on your makeup
“Yes he is baby”
She looks down at her tablet “There’s only 1 hour left”
“Do you want to call him?” you ask not wanting to be pestered until Rio finally made it home
“YAH!” She nods excitedly
You hand your phone to her letting her take the lead. She puts in the code and proceeds to call him via facetime.
“Y/N” He called your name this being the first time you called him in 2 weeks he was hoping you were waving the white flag.
“DADDY!”
“Ah princessa how are you baby girl?”
“Daddy where are you?”
“I’m on the way see?” He shows the cars passing by on the highway
“HI UNCLE NICK!” she greets Nick who was driving
“HI ISABELLA!” he greets with the same enthusiasm
“Daddy it’s getting late and we have reservations at 6:00”
Rio chuckles “I know princessa, I’m right around the corner I’ll be there in 15 minutes I promise”
“Okay” Isabella beams happy with his response “You wanna talk to mommy?”
“Let's let daddy and Uncle Nick drive okay? Drive safe see you when you get here” you say dryly before hanging up the phone. You didn’t want to hear what he had to say; he just needed to be on time.
“Go check on your brother tell him daddy will be here in 15 minutes”
“Okay!”
You chuckle to yourself as you watch her skip out the room.
Keeping true to his word, he arrived in 15 minutes you had already put out the clothes he was going to wear. Nothing was said between you two when he arrived he simply stripped out of his normal jeans and tee attire and put on his formal clothes minus the tie. By the time he stepped out of the room you and the kids were in the car waiting.
“Daddy are we gonna make it in time?” Isabella asked just as he opened the door to get in
“Yes Bella(Her nickname)”
“Okay good!” Isabella had picked up her fathers neuroticism over timeliness so much so that she was prompting you to start getting ready 5 hours before you were to leave the house. You and Marcus being the ones who would often drag or be late.
The car ride is filled with Marcus and Isabella telling Rio about their week, when that died down and the kids retreated back to their phones/tablets Rio turned to look at you. No matter how angry he was at you, he still never ceased to be amazed at your beauty.
“Hanging up on me now?” He asked
You look up from your phone and at him you shrug and continue with your Sudoku game. Maybe if you remain silent it won’t fuel this battle you two had going on.
You two had gotten into it 2 weeks prior over the fact that you accused him of prioritzing his business more than his family. The only reason you said that was because he had been gone for a little over 3 weeks, and no matter how much you urged him to come home even for a day he would always say he couldn’t and he would be home soon. So as soon as he walked in your home the tension was so thick, it didn’t take 10 minutes before you two were going at each other. You accused him of putting his business first over you and the kids, he accused you of having such an expensive taste for clothes and shoes that if he didn’t ‘prioritize the business’ you guys would have been out of home and food in a month. And from there you two have been at odds. Him withdrawing from you and you doing the same. The tell tale signs when Rio is mad at you, is when he withdrew his words of love and affirmation, he treated you like a business partner straight to the point. ‘No hey mama, baby, reina, nena, straight Y/N.’ The tell tale signs when you are mad at him is when you withdraw your kisses, hugs, back scratches, cuddles, etc  but you were still willing to talk to him and say I love you even if he didn’t want to at the time.
Dinner goes well, the kids didn’t realize that you two hadn’t said more than 10 words to each from time you all left the house to your return back to the house.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Mommy can I watch minions?” Bella asked
“Yes babygirl, but after you gotta go to sleep”
“Awww” she pouts
“It’s late Bella it’s 8, it’s technically your bedtime now”
“Thanks” she smiles showing her toothless grin you kiss her on the forehead before you leave her room.
“But mommy”
You put your hand up and she stops  “You can watch minions but to sleep right after”
Rio and Marcus had retreated to the backyard where they were playing soccer. You look at them through the kitchen window and smile while you put the food away. Marcus had become so skilled he was now beating his dad at 1:1 games.
By the time their game was over you had gone to the basement to your entertainment room and put on a movie to watch. When you hear Rio walk down the basement steps your stomach knots up. You were hoping he had found something to entertain himself with, far away from you.
“I don’t even know, weird hard to follow” you comment refusing to look at him.
“What you watching?”
“Dune”
“Is it good?”
“Feet hurt?” He comments noticing you wiggle your feet back and forth under the blanket
He takes a seat on the other side of the sectional, “Mind if I rewind it?”
“No might help me understand what the fuck is going on”
He chuckles and picks up the remote. You offer some fruit off your fruit bowl before you get comfortable on your side of the sectional.
“A little” Louboutin's are definitely not made for walking
“Want me to rub them” he offers
“No I’m good” you shut him down immediately
“Y/N” You hear your name
He sucks his teeth. This is his way of extending the olive branch, plus he is reaching his limit of touch deprivation. You don’t even think to react to that as far as you were concerned, he hit below the belt. You would never shop till he ran out of money, you would never put your kids lively hood at risk over a fucking shoe or bag. In fact most of the time when you did go ‘shopping’ you left without anything, but since he was gone so much he wouldn’t know.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
“Hmm” You hum realizing you were asleep and had no interests in waking up
“Lets go to bed”
You clear your throat “I’m good here” you adjust slightly pulling the blanket higher to cover your arms
“Why’d I buy that big ass bed and expensive ass mattress if all you wanna do is sleep on the couch?” he complained because the past few days you were sleeping in the basement.
You hear him suck his teeth again, “you want me to carry you?” he asks getting ready to scoop you up
You open your eyes  “NO!” you turn to look at him, he now had a brow raised with a confused look “I mean, no” You pause “I’m good here thanks” it’s not that you didn’t want to but if he did carry you, you would have given in and you simply were willing to die on this hill that was fortified with evidence and facts. Rio had been prioritizing the business too much lately and it was affecting you and the kids.
You glare at him before speaking “I’ll pay you back then, first thing Monday morning your money will be in your account” you turn over “bout to nickel and dime me over every little thing” you mumble, not low enough though because he hears it
Rio scoffs in disbelief and looks away from you, turning his body away as you wiggle your way deeper into the cushions. When he turns back around without a second thought he lifts you from the couch.
“Christopher, I said I don’t want you to carry me! Put me down!” you complain as he starts walking “CHRISTOPHER PUT ME DOWN!” you demand this time hitting his back. A sharp gasp exits your lips from the stinging sensation you felt on your ass cheeks
“OW CHRISTOPHER!” Another slap this time you move your hands to cover them, thinking more slaps were coming your way
“Shut.the.fuck.up Y/N” he warns with a stern voice
You decide its best to do so until you aren't in a vulnerable position. You look at your house as he carries you to your bedroom, making mental notes to get batteries for the clock on the wall, and have the kids remove their excess shoes from the door.
When you make it to your room Christopher drops you on the king sized bed, hard enough to cause your body to bounce, before you could even react, he had grabbed your ankle roughly tagging you to the edge of the bed hovering over you, his hands holding your wrist against the bed.
You huff and puff as you look up at him “can you let me go?” his nostrils are still flaring, the vein on his forehead still present indicating he was pissed!
“Check your attitude” he speaks slowly
You roll your eyes “I don’t have an attitude, if you had just let me sle..”
He cuts you off “You know we need to talk!”
“Hey Marcus everything okay?” You ask as you straighten up, playing coy, this wasn’t the first or the last time Marcus and/or Isabella would interrupt something intimate so you both had enough practice to fool the kids that nothing of the sorts was happening.
“Okay say what you gotta say?” you ask curtly
“Y/N, I’m not doing this shi..” before he could finish there was a knock on the door, both of you turned to look at it  “Come in!” you yell causing Rio to shoot you a look, before getting away from you. The door opened and Marcus stood by it.
“Yes, I was wondering if it would be okay for me to get on the game dad”
Christopher looked at the clock “Yea its cool buddy, only an hour though its 11, if you’re not off by 12am I’m taking it from you for a week”
You had used Marcus’s interruption to your advantage and moved from the bed to the closet where you were beginning to undress and change into your night clothes.
“Yesss! Thanks dad good night love you both”
“Love you too!”
“Can I help you?” You ask as you glare at Christopher through the mirror
You huff and roll your eyes “Fine”
“We weren't done talking”
You remove your earrings “I have nothing to say to you”
He sucks his teeth again “So what? You want us to stay together and not talk to each other or touch each other”
You turn to face him “I’m not the one that was away for almost a month, you asking the wrong mother fucker” the next second your back hit the wall with a small thud, Rio had grabbed you by the arm when you were walking away from him. “OW WHAT THE FUCK CHRISTOPHER!” you were exaggerating he didn’t hurt you but he did startle you.
He pulls you close to him, so close you can smell the pineapple in his breath. Through a clenched jaw he reminds you “What your fucking mouth Y/N”
“No” he cuts you off again
“We gotta talk about this shit Y/N” he stresses
“I know that!”
“So why you avoiding it?”
“I’m not! You said what you had to say, I made the decision it’s best for me to look for a job, part time and th..”
You sigh “Christopher,”
You take a step back “No? What do you mean no?”
He releases your arm and steps back as well “You ain’t gotta do all-a-that”
“Y/N”
You throw up your arms “Well what do you want me to do? I’m funding my luxury habits, so I don’t get what the big deal is?”
“Okay” you respond dryly no need to go back and forth, the decision was already made, you sit down on the small bench in your shared closet
He rolls his shoulders back “I said no Y/N”
“Why?”
“You don’t need to that’s why”
You hated how everything just had to be his way. He had to be in control of everything. Even the kids picked up on it and sometimes would ask him permission to do things before even informing you, only telling you after the fact that ‘dad said no or yes’.
He looks at you for a bit before sitting down next to you glad that you went ahead and bought the bench even though he had protested against it “We need to collaborate here, lets both compromise mama” he speaks in a much more loving tone
You turn to look at him “What’s your compromise going to be? You won’t prioritze business? For how long? Like maybe 3-4 months then it’s back to business as usual? I don’t care if you ignore me, I don’t matter, I’m an adult. I am fine, but when you don’t come back for almost a month. The kids start asking questions about our relationship status and how they know kids whose parents aren’t together and..” you look up at the ceiling to stop the tears from slipping, you turn to look at him “Just think about the kids okay?” It wasn’t only the kids that were concerned about his whereabouts, you were too. You know this business, you know it comes with long days, nights, hours, you know that eventually it will be hard for him to resist temptation because a man is a man, is a man, no matter who the man is. So for him to be gone for so long with barely any communication from him had your mind racing through all types of scenarios. Maybe he’s dead and someone took his phone, maybe he was injured, maybe he was with another woman.
He dropped his head and looks back up at you reaching to wipe the single tear rolling down your face  “I’ll do better mama,” he promises
You offer a smile “Thanks that’s all I ask, and I won’t shop so much" you offer hoping this was the end of it and you two could move on
That caused Rio’s chest to tighten. He didn't want you to compromise that much, and you were right it had bothered him that there was a new box of Louboutin's, Gucci, Yves Saint Laurent, Jimmy Choos, or whatever luxury bag/shoe/jewelry was in the closet, every time he came back. He didn’t mind you having expensive taste but he wouldn’t lie at some point he was convinced you were gonna shop him into the ground.  But to sell the things that you liked, he wasn’t about to go for it.
He looks “Nah you ain’t gotta do that”
“You said it cause it bothered you or you wouldn’t have said it at all, really it’s okay Christopher, I’m running out of space anyway” you look around your closet “Might sell a few things also”
He nods as he looks around a slight chuckle leaving his lips as he notices you were starting to encroach on his side of the closet. He turns to look at you and you smile at him.
“Nah don’t do that either”
You sigh, he was now making things complicated “I honestly don’t mind there are shoes in here that I haven’t worn or hate now so I can just sell them, no big deal” you shrug
“Okay I’m gonna remove my makeup” You announce before getting up and walking to the bathroom.
“Are we okay now?”
He nods a smile spreading across his lips “yea we good”
Rio had followed behind and undressed, heading straight to the shower since he had no time to freshen up.
You absentmindedly complete your skin care routine humming a song you heard on the radio. By the time you were finishing up, so was Rio that man never took long showers.
“Mmm look at you” he comments as he comes up behind you with a towel around his waist pulling you closer so you were flush against his already semi hard dick.
“Look at me, look at you!” You flirt as you look at him from the mirror. Water dripping down his chest, down to his abs, then to his v-line, his dick causing the towel to stretch.
“I missed you reina”
“Missed you too” you say softly as you watch his hands meticulously glide down your thighs, a grab here a grab there, Rio pulled you even more flush against him releasing a deep moan from the sensation.  His hands start to inch their way up grabbing at your breasts, Rio rocking his hips into you before he slipped his hands under your tank top. You watch as he dips his head by your collar bone, heavy breathes in your ear, inhaling taking in your scent before he starts to give you wet kisses on the neck traveling from side to side, sometimes pausing to lick and bite down before moving to the next spot. You watch as he pushes your underwear down your thighs, you complete the rest of the task and shimmy off of them, you watch as he pushes the tank top up pulling it off of your body, leaving you naked. He takes a step back and hits your ass one time before resuming position, this time minus the towel. You watch as he caresses your body he’s so caught up in what he’s doing he doesn’t know he has an audience. Hell you didn’t even notice how turned on you were getting until his hand dipped between your thighs and grazed over your sensitive clit almost making you collapse. You whimper as he proceeds and a grunt comes from him as he feels just how slick you are.
“Gotta lot of making up to do mi reina”
You whine as he applies more pressure that was enough for him to look up and see you biting your lip scratching at his arms. You nod in agreement. That’s all he needed and with that he kept his word, the next day all those mental to-do lists that you had told yourself were simply not getting done. You spent the majority of the day on the couch or on the bed.

rating: 💙 | pairing: rio x his wife | words: 904
an: can't remember who requested this one, but I adore you. here’s another story I never got around to posting
request: rio and his wife again? but this time she's pregnant and can't get comfortable so rio tries to take her mind off it
Tumblr media
Rio's eyes open.
He can breathe. Actually, breathe. That’s the problem.
Rio can never breathe—at least not properly—when he’s in bed with you. He’s become accustomed to waking up with you curled against him, most of your weight pressing him into the mattress. As much as he teases you about your inability to sleep without laying on him, Rio secretly loves it.
The absence of your touch is enough for Rio to fight off the tug of sleep already threatening to pull him back under.
His eyes find the clock on the bedside table.
2:15 A.M.
Lifting his head from the pillow, Rio finds you pacing the length of your dark bedroom.
One hand on your forehead, the other on your hip. Eyes closed, you quietly shuffle past the foot of the bed.
“Keep it up, you’ll burn a hole in the floor,” Rio’s chuckle fills the dark room, the sound of his voice causing you to jump.
You both wince as he reaches over, flicking on the bedside lamp.
“Sorry,” you groan. “I didn’t mean to wake you—”
Rio silently dismisses the apology, pushing the comforter back. “You good?”
Instinctively, you nod.
The action would convince many. Throughout your pregnancy, Rio has learned you’re an expert at masking your discomfort. When your friends and family ask how you’re doing, you instantly reply “I’m fine.”
The problem is, you try to do the same with your husband. Five years of marriage and you’ve yet to realize your husband can see right through you. This is why he can’t help but softly smile as your eyes meet his.
“If that’s the case,” Rio sighs. He comes to a stop before you, hands settling on your waist. “Why don’t you come back to bed?”
“Believe me, I tried. But, it seems I’m carrying the next Ronaldo,” you giggle, the exhaustion bringing your forehead to rest against your husband’s chest. “He’s been restless all night.”
“Sorry, mama.”
Soft kisses press against your forehead, over the bridge of your nose, and down to your lips.
Your hands find his chest, gently applying pressure as Rio leaves a final kiss against your lips.
“I’m fine,” you smile softly. “I’m sure he’ll settle down in a bit. Go back to bed.”
Being up this early in the morning was not ideal. Despite your protest, Rio has picked up much of your responsibilities as your third trimester has begun to wind down. Taking Marcus to school is one. You know he only has a few hours of sleep left before he has to take on the task.
Rio eyes drift to the bedroom door. The smile slowly spreading across his face arches your brow.
——————
“You know…I don’t think I’ve ever said this, but yellow looks good on you.”
Your giggle prompts your husband to glance over his shoulder.
Seated at the island of your kitchen, elbows resting against the surface, you watch Rio carefully balance the cooking pan in his left hand. He pushes the oven door shut with his right, pausing to cut it off.
Rio notes the twinkle of your eyes as you give him a once-over.
A large bee adorns his chest, completing the phrase bee happy. The apron he wears matches the yellow, bee-covered, oven mitts protecting his hands from the hot baking pan.
“Every color looks good on me,” Rio chuckles.
“Very true,” you agree, eyes following him as he makes his way around the island. “But, I’m a big fan of this look.”
Rio’s lips meet yours in a brief kiss, his smile growing as you pull away.
The half-eaten cookie you hold soon regains your attention as he slides onto the stool alongside yours.
You’ve lost count of the number of cookies you’ve eaten over the last twenty minutes.
Soft, warm, and chewy, the cookies were loaded with three of your favorite things. Chocolate chips, pecans, and caramel.
Rio had watched you teach Marcus how to make the cookies nearly a dozen times. Usually, while you and his son were busy mixing the dough, Rio was busy stealing chocolate chips and pecans to snack on.
Tonight, it seems the two of you have switched roles. Rio had forced you to remain seated while he focused on preparing the cookies.
“There’s nothing the perfect cookie can’t fix,” you’d once told Marcus after he returned home from a rough day at school.
The family recipe taught to you by your grandmother has become the savior of many stressful situations. And a gift at many celebrations.
They proved to be the perfect distraction from your previous dilemma.
Ignoring the swat of your hand, Rio manages to steal a bite of your cookie, his eyes drifting to the stairs visible from where you sit.
“You better hurry up and eat. Gotta hide the evidence,” he chuckles as you pout.
“There’s plenty of cookies,” you remind him, stealing the cookie out of his hand. “Eat your own.”
Rio shakes his head, his lips pressing a kiss against your shoulder. “I like yours better.”
“I’m eating for two,” you remind him, the smile on your face growing as his eyes roll.
“Funny how that comes out at the most convenient times.”
Primarily when you steal food from his plate. Your eyes drop to the cookie you’d recently stolen from your husband.
“Remember that next time you think about getting me pregnant.”
“Speaking of kids…I’m not taking the blame when Marcus wakes up to find you didn’t share any with him.”

For the gif drabbles ❤️
"This looks like shit," you threw the money on the table, "Do it again."
Annie and Ruby groaned in tandem, but Beth sighed. "It looks perfect," she said, looking up at you as you stood over her, "We've printed this same design four times--"
"--and it keeps getting slightly less like shit," you cocked an eyebrow, "Look, if you can't hack it anymore..."
"We can!" Annie spoke up, eyes wide. "We can, we'll get it right!"
"It's just..." Ruby chewed on her lip.
You could feel your patience thinning. "Just what?"
"Well," she continued weakly, "Lucy was the artist, so... without her..."
"Ya know, since homeboy did... what he did," Annie added in.
"...It's harder to print. We have her blueprints, but some of these subtler details are just... We need an artist," Ruby finished.
You nodded, scanning the three women before you. Annie looked nervous, as did Ruby, but Beth looked annoyed and defiant.
You were sick of her face.
"So get another artist," you said, getting bored with the conversation.
"Why? So your boss can shoot her?" Beth ground out, glaring up at you.
Your eyes narrowed at the same time Rio chuckled. You turned a bit, angling your body so that you could see him.
He sat on a chair next to a monitor, a hand on his chin and smirk on his face.
"That's funny to you?" Beth spat, anger clear on her face. "You shot a defenseless girl!"
You raised an eyebrow at Rio, but he was still chuckling. If he found her little outburst amusing, then you guess you would allow it.
"Nah," he said, shaking his head, "I'm not laughing about that. I'm laughing at what you said," he smirked over at you, "She called me your boss."
Annie frowned, looking at the two of you. "A... Aren't you?"
"She," Rio gestured towards you, a pride grin on his face, "is my boss. Yeah, see, a real bad bitch don't shy away from the dark parts of this business," he went on, "And so when I told my boss," he pointed at you again, "that I had to kill Lucy cause of your," he looked at the girls, "bullshit, well. She wasn't pleased. And I'm telling you now, looking at her face right now," Rio made eye contact with you, and you could see the pride in his eyes as he looked at you, "My girl ain't letting you dumb bitches fuck our shit up again."
Beth spoke before she could stop herself, "Your girl?"
His smirk stretched over his plump lips, "My boss," he clarified, "and my girl," he looked over at you again, "So, what you think, ma? Have 'em print it again, or have Mick take them downtown and put a slug in each of their heads?"
You turned back to the women, watching the fear swirl in Annie's eyes, the way Ruby stiffened, frightened and trapped.
And Beth's reddening cheeks, you could see the humiliation on her face, now that she was looking at what she could never be, what she could never have, standing right in front of you.
You looked over at Rio, and you thought back on your life with him--meeting him when he was just a runner for your father, Rio remaining loyal to you even after your father died and you took over his organization, the first time you kissed, when you had blood on your hands and he had thought he lost you, the way Rio had grabbed you and held you to him, the first time he ever let himself act like anything but a loyal subordinate to you. You remembered that sick, cold feeling in your gut when you'd heard that he had been shot three times, that he was with the feds. It's what brought you back into his orbit, you'd sworn to keep it professional with him years ago, but that... that pulled you right back in.
You watched Rio watch you, and you felt a wave of protectiveness come over you as you looked at him--the man you loved. You turned to Beth, your gaze cold as ice and as strong as steel, using every ounce of your status as a boss to intimidate her. "How about you choose, Mrs. Boland? You want to print it again this time, and do it right, or would you and your gal pals rather take a ride with Mick?"
"W... We'll print," she said weakly.
Rio's chuckle warmed your soul, and as the ladies worked on the new print, you turned to him. He gave you a special smile, one full of love and appreciation for you, and you turned your back to the girls as they worked.
They didn't get to see the loving smile you gave him back.
That was only for him.

"We have a problem."
"We? No, you have a problem."
"Oh no, we have a problem."
"And how does my cousin banging some stripper affect me?" Nick questioned with a chastising grin.
Over the last month, Christopher and Epiphany had been more friendly in the public eye. It didn't take a genius to figure out they were seeing one another or at least messing around. Annie had yet to tell Beth about Epiphany's casual bragging about her and Christopher's sex life. Despite Beth being her older sister, Annie didn't want to be seen as a rat or lose someone she had considered a friend. She liked having Epiphany as a friend and didn't want her relationship spilling into her sisterhood. On the flip side, Beth took notice of just about everything Rio did. He wasn't one to be flashy or make a scene. His behavior over the course of the three years she'd known him was either consistent or spontaneous. Nowadays he'd drop by the club more often and never on the days when Epiphany wasn't working. Drop and pick-up days were whenever Epiphany worked. The two would share smiles at one another from across the room. He would stay to watch her perform solos on stage and then they'd share a drink at the bar. Or Beth would see him leave and then Epiphany would leave right after. If not that, it was the shared touches. His hand would pat her back on his way out or if he was close enough, Epiphany would kiss him on the cheek.
And Beth loathed it all.
Keeping your friends close and your enemies closer was something that Nick learned and lived by. After Beth had set him up to be locked up and he'd gotten her back 'where it hurts' things were back to 'normal'. Well, as normal as he and his brother wanted things to be. The blonde councilwoman at her beck and call, open to being bent in whichever direction they could push her in. The brothers were still playing the long game with her. Beth was the perfect spokesperson to appeal to rich, white, privileged investors in across states better than Nick could. And when things go to shit, Beth is set to have a hard time. Both Rio and Nick would be sure of it.
"It affects you because it affects me," she hissed, "I'm not close to him like that and I doubt you two are close after…last year's events." A teasing glint in her eye and a smug smirk laid across her thin lips as she saw Nick's smile slowly diminish. "Anyway," She started off with a higher pitched voice and chirpy tone, "Your cousin, brother, whatever is involved with the Japanese. I don't know what the details are but I want in. "
"You want a percentage of that deal." Nick clarified while he relaxed back in his office seat, "How do you know he's even in business with them?"
"He moved eight SUV trucks filled with Japanese yen through my strip club and my second dealership." She informed before shrugging her shoulders with a subtle hair flip, "We're partners, it's only fair that I'm cut in."
Nick looked at her with amusement in his eyes. He was amused but still impressed with how far she had come. She was more like him than she could ever admit, if not worse, "Right," he replied casually with a slight nod."I can't be involved, that'd be a conflict of interest-"
He was quickly cut off by Beth, "How? This affects you because then we have nothing to pin on him with the feds!"
"It's personal. I don't know how close they are or how he feels about this chick. So either one of us removing her without motive causes unnecessary heat. You can't just kill her because he'd banging her," Nick replied with a raised voice and sharp tone. He didn't miss the way her eyes widened, or how she gulped and clenched her jaw. Her discomfort was loud without words needing to be said,  "You're gonna have to create a shadow. Set her up in some way, get photos, and then you get rid of her. That'll be your reason and he'll have to understand because it's just business. Take a page out of his book." he advised.
Beth quickly grabbed her designer tote bag and stood up, "Well thank you, councilman, I heard you loud and clear." and with her passive-aggressive statement she spun on her heel and strutted out of his office.
"Happy to help, Councilwoman!"Nick ridiculed behind her with a chuckle just before the door shut.
When she arrived at her home, Beth had done exactly like she was told but not without adding her own details. Beth had a four-bedroom, two-bathroom luxurious home in a more upscale area of the suburbs of Detroit. She lived in luxury now with her new position and she enjoyed the space that was solely hers. Seeing her children every other weekend was good enough for her, nowadays. Her old life felt like another world but she couldn't deny that she didn't miss it. She was powerful now. She was somebody who people either loved or feared. She felt invincible. "Annie, could you come down here for a second?!"
"What's up?" the short-haired dirty blonde questioned a few minutes later.
"Hey, do you think you could set up lunch between your little stripper friend and me?" Beth asked, " I'm thinking that Ruby and you need to be there as well."
"Yeah sure, but uh what for?" Annie replied as she raised her bushy eyebrows.
"Just lunch," her voice softened as her eyes lowered to a more 'saddened' look, "I have to talk to her about Rio. He's dangerous and I don't want her ending up like Lucy," she sighed with faux-sorrow.
"Or is it that you're jealous." Annie smirked and wiggled her brows.
"Oh please, Annie," Beth rolled her eyes, " I am not jealous of some bimbo stripper hooking up with him. Believe me, she's keeping him out of my hair."
"Mhmm, whatever you say," Annie teased with a sing-a-song tone, "But yeah I'll set it up."
And she did just that. Annie had set up a lunch date the following weekend with Epiphany at Tony's diner. Saturday afternoon to be exact. Epiphany had gotten ready at Christopher's apartment. It'd become a routine for the pair to hook up in the middle of the day instead of grabbing lunch. Sometimes, a quick lunch date was after an hour of indulging in each other's bodies. As usual, Christopher had left first then thirty minutes later, Epiphany had left.
She had gotten into an Uber and two of Christopher's henchmen weren't far behind. They tailed behind unbeknownst to her, all the way to the diner. As soon as she walked in and the suburban mothers spotted her, almost immediately judgment flashed across their eyes. Their eyes ranked her attire thaat consisted of; A short green-camo mini skirt with green sequin scattered across it,  a tight-fitted white cropped camisole that read 'AS IF' in big bold gold letters, a dark green jean bolero jacket, and knee–high heeled boots hugged her thighs.
"Oh hell no…"Ruby scoffed.
"Geez, you can take the girl outta of the strip-club but can't take the club out of the girl,"Beth added.
"Wow…uh…that's a lot for lunch," Annie cringed and bit at her lip.
Epiphany raised her left eyebrow as she looked at the three women before her eyes narrowed in on Annie, "I thought you said we were having brunch. As just the two of us."She proceeds to take a seat in the booth seat across from the trio. Her arms soon folded under her ample breasts as an expression remained unmoved.
"I know and I'm sorry I didn't clarify there would be more than just the two of us but-" Annie was cut off by Epiphany in the midst of trying to apologize and explain herself.
"But, you wanted to ambush me." Epiphany stated in a matter-of-fact tone, straightening her shoulders back as she sat up straighter,
"We're not here to fire you," Ruby stated.
"No. Not at all!" Annie protested.
"Look, we're just here to talk to you," Beth sighed, "To warn you."
"Oh? About what? Is the club shutting down?" Epiphany questioned them, her eyes moving across the three women back and forth until they settled in on Beth.
"Look Epiphany, I know we haven't exactly seen eye to eye-" Beth attempted to reason but was cut off.
"We haven't?" Epiphany mocked with a higher pitch to her voice and a slight head tilt, "...Why would you think that?"
"Well we haven't had a full conversation over a cup of cof-" Beth giggled before she was cut off once again.
"And who's fault would that be? I've never thought we had beef. In fact," Epiphany licked across her bottom lip as her eyes swept up and down the Detroit council woman's face, "I don't think of you at all."
A look of bewilderment washed over the three women's faces. The nostrils of Beth's nose flared and her peach lipstick-covered lips curled. Before anyone could utter a word, the waitress came trotting over, "What will y'all be having?" she asked with an impatient tone.
"Well, all have Cobb salads." Beth ordered for everyone but Epiphany quickly jumped in after to switch her order, "I'll just take a black coffee."
"Look here, we're trying to warn you that you're getting involved with a very dangerous man." Beth hissed before rambling on, "You don't know the vile, horrible things he's done to people. Like our friend Lucy, he seduced her with his kindness only to kill her when she was no longer of use to him. And me, he's used sex and exploration to control my every move. It took me outsmarting him many times to get out of being murdered by him."
"And he kidnapped me!" Annie was quick to mention.
Epiphany's lips stretched at the sides into a tight smile before she started to laugh. her laugh came off as a subtle and serene giggle, "Who are you even talking about? Who is he?"
"Oh for the love god, the gang leader that's going to pound town on you!!" Ruby sighed in annoyance.
"Rio."
"Gangfriend!"
Annie and Beth both said different names at once. That was when Epiphany knew it was time to go. She had heard enough. "Sounds like you ladies have got whoever's fucking me mixed up with whatever you've got going on." She said as she stood up from her seat, "If the person you know is so horrible, why not get restraining orders? and dip out? Or I don't know…get rid of the person?" Epiphany suggested as she got out of the booth. She then proceeded to turn around and start heading out of the diner.
"Girls a lost cause." Ruby sighed.
" Good riddance." Beth scoffed.
"What do you think we should do now?' Annie asked as they watched Epiphany walk down the street from the window.
"Plan B," Beth smirked before pulling out her phone.
Their words didn't fall on deaf ears. Epiphany thought of what they had said throughout her day on campus. She sat through her lecture in airplane mode. Denting her pen with bite marks she stared aimlessly out the fourth-floor window. These claims…these accusations…they sounded familiar. Eerily familiar.
'Watch yourself'
'Cassius did a number on his last girl, Está locõ. Un Díablo.'
'Do you even know what his family does to people? You don't wanna marry into that.'
The images of Cassius's brown skin covered in black and blue reddened flesh from fingernails that broke his skin. The screams and cries of men being burned alive, of it replayed in her mind. Or how the boys who spared her glance and shot her a smile at The Kitty Box ended up disappearing left & right.  'Was Chris similar? Or was he worse?' Epiphany wondered to herself throughout the day.  Why was it that she attracted dangerous men? And why did she find such jovial comfort in that? A sense of security and importance. After all, it's what she always dreamed of. She dreamed of having the life of women like Elvira Hancock, Carmela Soprano, and of course, Ginger McKenna.
The remainder of her time in lectures blew by in the blink of an eye. Since she couldn't be bothered to pay attention in class, Epiphany decided to settle herself in a cafe on campus with a series of notes that she brought from one of her classmates.
"Hmph…I always thought you only looked best on your back but this is a slightly nicer view."
Cassius. Surely, Epiphany must've been hearing things. She didn't dare peel her eyes away from the notes that laid against the table. Her mouth grew dry. Then her palms grew sweaty. The underneath of her breasts began to moisten. Only hot air escaped her lips as she breathed outwards. He wasn't here. He couldn't be here. But he was here. In Detroit. In a cafe on the campus where she attended. And he sat right across from her. His sandy-brown-tanned hand reached over and laid upon hers. Epiphany let out a choked moan of pain, of agony. It felt as though he had burned her with a hot iron. His skin was always hot. Very hot as if he had a furnace built within his body. As she snatched her hand away, Epiphany's eyes finally settled on him. He looked exactly the same as the day she left him. Shiny bald head, Smooth, poreless brown skin, and a full, thick goatee that nearly covered his lips. He was dressed like a reaper, in all black from his leather parka-jacket to his Timberland boots.
Tumblr media Tumblr media Tumblr media
"What the fuck are you doing here." Epiphany had finally gotten the courage to say, with her shoulders back and a sharpness to her tone, "Better yet, who told you I was here? My mother?"
To this, Cassius scoffed, "A whore like that doesn't care for her child overnight, don't flatter yourself." He then folded his large hands together on the table. The diamonds within his chunky rings reflected off of the silverware on the table, "You called me."
"And why would I do that?" She questioned with a tilt of her head slightly to the side, her eyes nor her face gave away that she was shocked. Epiphany sat there with a stoic expression. Never would she have called him. She left Las Vegas behind and everyone in it for a reason. To be normal. As normal as a girl with a not-so-stellar past could be. But, she was only twenty-three and tried to remind herself that life was only just starting. Her childhood felt like adulthood but this era of her was her freedom.
"Because you need me. You said it over the phone. You said what I already know. You can't live without me, you and I both know you can not function in a civilized world without being taken care of. Look at your job now, A whore on a pole." He tsked and shook his head. Cassius as always thought so low of women. Especially those who worked in the sex work or entertainment industry. Yet he and his family endorsed it all. They funded all if not the majority of the clubs in Dubai and Los Vegas. Or at least that's what he and her mother told her.
And his words angered her. It made her blood boil and her skin crawl. Her teeth dug into the meaty flesh of her bottom lip as she stared across the table at him. Her mouth was no longer dry as she collected spit from the sides of her mouth before she hawked spit in his eye, "Hijo de puta! Even with all the money in the world, you're still a useless trick with nothing to offer but your money. You're lower than a whore."
Cassius's ears grew reddened as the corners of his jaw tightened in. His bushy brows started to narrow in as he got up at the same time she had. Only, he flipped over the cafe table causing a squad of campus security to bum rush into the spot. The man began cursing in Arabic as he lunged for her but Epiphany was quicker than him. She ran behind security and they tackled him to the floor. Her day had gone from annoying to bad. How did he find her? He said he had spoken to her and that she discussed needing him. These were the questions that plagued her mind as she was placed in the counselor's office alongside the police. She filled out various forms before the restraining order was put in.
None of the day's events made sense. Beth, Annie, and their friend had no business 'warning' her about Christopher or as they called him, Rio. Rio had no knowledge of her and Epiphany wasn't important enough for his enemies to track down her ex to 'take her back'; Somehow, she felt like Beth was involved. Why, other than petty jealousy? Epiphany had no clue. It all overwhelmed her. The web of backstabbing, sex, personal gain, and who knew what else. Everything that transpired within the last three hours had caused Epiphany to form a severe headache along with body pain. Stress started to take a toll on her body. And after questioning and fillings were done, she was driven to her apartment and taken upstairs by police.
The moment that she got inside, she flopped herself across the couch; and let her mind go numb.
Tumblr media
The scent of sewer water, shit, along with the feeling of a warm hand against her cheek had awoken Epiphany from her deep slumber. Her groggy eyes slowly opened and as her vision became clear, Christopher stood in front of her. She was seated on a wonky metal chair in an underground area that looked like a sewer storage locker. Epiphany, winced at the sight of her new setting and instantly latched her hands onto his forearms and stood up on her feet, "Chris? Chris what's going on?" she whimpered in fear.
His usually big brown eyes were dark. And the subtle smirk on his lips made her grow weary with fear. This was the first time she felt truly intimidated by him. His stature; The way he towered over her five foot two frame with his six foot one. Tears started to form at the corners of her eyes as her chest began to rise and fall quickly, "P-please..please don't hurt me." she begged. Not him. Anyone but him. He was the only aspect of her life that made her feel alive. His gentleness, The romance he brought to her life in such a short amount of time was overwhelming and she feared that ending more than her own death.
"Shh, relax. I'm not gonna hurt you, baby," his tone was mellow as he raised his left hand and laid it against the sides of her face. Christopher dipped his head down, his narrow nose brushing along her button one. His fingers gently caressed the side of her chubby cheek and side of her jaw, "But you tryna hurt me." his once gentle tone darkened, lowering to a baritone octave that sent chills down her spin. Before Epiphany could protest, she felt the coolness of metal riding up the middle of her breasts. His signature golden Glock kissed her bare skin, firmly pressed to the side of her temple. This caused a sequel to escape her lips and before she could utter any type of rebuttal, he hushed her with his lips placed on hers. The kiss was gentle, sweet, and slow. His right arm wrapped around her waist.
Epiphany didn't know whether to grasp him closer or fight him off. But what she could feel was his heart pounding like a punch against hers.
It all felt so surreal. Like a nightmare and wet dream all at once. Gentleness mixed in with the threat of violence. All she could feel was fear and confusion. Epiphany's body trembled against his. And she knew he felt. He had to have felt her. Her fear, her anxiety, her heart.
"Why do I got the feeling that…you're gonna be the bullet that puts a hole in my head, hm?" he hummed against her mouth with the slickness of a snake. He moved the barrel of the gun from her temple to his when he mentioned 'hole in my head' before laying back to her temple. Her tears sprinkled onto his cheek, "Did you get enough info on me to run it back to those bitches?"
"Wha-? You think I'm Beth's rat?"
Her pushing up into a frowning pout as she looked directly into his eyes. Her eyes of uncertainty changed to a look of disbelief, "Why?"
"I could ask you the same thing. That little lunch date looked real interesting,". Christopher hissed and with each movement his lips made, she could feel the brush against her mouth.
"Oh, Rio it was." she rolled her r's when she seethed his name, "Annie set me up with Beth to warn me about you."
He stood still and the menacing look he once possessed of narrowed eyes, a tightly clenched jaw, and striking eye contact had slowly begun to relax. The crease between his brows slowly smoothed out. His eyes flicked back and forth between looking at her and looking above her head. Christopher was debating. Not only with her but with himself. "And what did she say?" She, Beth. He didn't care for what the other two stiffs spoke about because it usually was a rehearsal of what she said.
"The short version? You're a fucking serial killer who uses sex and manipulation to exploit and get what you want, the long version? a lot of secrets were spilled out in the open." Epiphany replied, she spoke through her nose with a slight whisper to her voice.
An ounce of a smirk peeled on the right corner of his lips as he rolled the gun along the side of her neck. He didn't confirm or deny but he coyly asked, "What you think about that mama?"
"I'm thinking what the fuck does that have to do with me and you and why you have a gun to my head?!" she cried out, anger laced in her outburst. Her hands shook at her sides as she didn't push him away due to the gun. The fear of it going off in her face or throat was far greater than her anger. "I'm not involved!" she protested.
"Oh no, see you've been involved sweetheart." Christopher argued, "It's just a matter of whose side you're on."
Fool him once, shame on them. Fool him twice, shame on him….there wouldn't be a third time. Christopher was no fool and the moment the Boland woman walked into his life was when he realized he'd gotten a big…soft. And Epiphany just seemed eerily close to business for his liking. He needed undying loyalty, control, and if she was truly for him then he needed her in line. Love could come later…after sacrifice.
"Unless…" Christopher began to chuckle but the sound wasn't from happiness, "Unless you don't wanna be involved then you can leave right now." he took a few steps away from her and aimed the gun at the dark, wet hallway to the left.
Epiphany's eyebrows knitted together as she looked up at him in confusion. His play on words and attitude switch was causing gears to twist and bend in her mind. They spent every day together. If not day then night. Leave where?
Blinking rapidly as she stood there. She didn't move. She only stared at him. "What do you mean? " she questioned before licking at her lips, "Wi-...will I see you later?" uncertainty in her voice. And his smile made her stomach twist and turn, "You do mean I don't have to be involved with the club right or with whatever shit you've got going on with those women…right?"
She needed clarification and he gave her none of that. "Nah darlin, I'm afraid this is the end of line for us. You're off the hook." He dismissed her casually. His tone is deep and delicate. It was almost like a goodbye kiss. But he never moved, his eyes still settled in on her like a lion waiting to be challenged. Which let Epiphany know he wasn't done.
"No."
"No?" He challenged with a slight head tilt as his eyes looked her over.
Despie how fearful, how anxious she felt, Epiphany still chose to stand her ground and challenge him, "The moment I turn around you'll put a bullet to my head. Because you don't believe I'm not involved con esa perra concejal" (with that bitch councilwoman)
Sassily, she crossed her arms against her chest and cocked her hip slightly to the side as she stared at him. "Even if you don't kill me-"
"How bout you kill for me?" He proposed.
Epiphany's eyes widened as Christopher stalked towards her. "Come on champ." His hand latched to the back of her neck, forcefully making her walk in front of him down the dark tunnel. She followed him with stumbling feet and squinted her eyes in an attempt to see where they were going.
And then Christopher began to whistle and a light turned on in one of the rooms. Epiphany was led into that room and came face to face with Cassius. He'd been hung upside down with his hands and feet taped up. His left eye was swollen shut, shaded in dark plum purple and blue. His right eye was completely gorged out, by the looks of it…he'd been burned. "Actually, I shouldn't have said to kill for me. It's for you, a gift." he chuckled, "I thought the unmarked SUV was the fed tailing you but turns out it's this sorry looking Hijo de puta."
Epiphany cried as she looked at her ex-lover in horror. Sure, he was fucking vile. And everyone eventually would die. But, she couldn't take a life. "Chris, no. Please no, I can't." She weeped.
Christopher tilted his head back and inhaled deeply before he slowly straightened up and eyed her, "You will." he swiveled the gun around his finger and then offered it towards her. "He's your problem and you gotta get rid of em'. "
"You think he's gonna let you go? A girl like you…" his eyes trailed her body from top to bottom in admiration with a sinister smirk, "Ain't easy to let go."
"Someone will come looking for him!" She protested, "He's well connected in Vegas, his parents own everything."
"He ain't shit but a bootleg con artist. A janky ass car salesman at best." Christopher revealed with a dismissive tone. He then grasped her jaw in his hand with a gentle touch. Once Epiphany looked in his eyes, he leaned his head down and whispered "Do it. You don't gotta worry bout nothing else, I'll handle it. I take care of what's mine." His tone was reassuring.
"And I'm yours?" She sniffled with a flustered, wet face.
"Only if you wanna be." He rasped as he laid the gun firmly in her hand.
Breathing in deeply, She held it with two hands. Christopher switched from being beside her to standing behind her. His hands laid over hers as he steadied her arms up. His feet nudged her legs open and pushed one of her feet forward.
"Come on mamitá, show me how much you want this." She could feel his warm breath in her ear, a gentle caress of his nose nudging at the side of her earlobe. "Make me proud."
Her head hurts so bad, her chest aches as the vile metallic taste jumbles up in the back of her mouth. Christopher, Rio was all that they said he was but worse. But, she wanted him. She wanted him to stay. She wanted him to keep making her feel seen, wanted, cared for, and maybe even loved. Cassius was right. She couldn't function in a world without being taken care of. Not because she lacked the skill set or had any type of disability holding her back. No, it was because she didn't want to. Her hands gripped the base of the gun. Its heavyweight in her small hands felt as though she was holding someone's heart in her hands. And in a way she was. She was holding someone's lifeline.

Your Boyfriend is a Bitch Headcanon -Mayans Version
Summary: How the guys would react if they overheard some guy hitting on you and saying that your boyfriend is a bitch. Inspiration came from the song below.
Taglist: @keyweegirlie @hatersaremymotivators @meera10 @kikijackson-blog @im-just-a-mississippi-girl
Tumblr media
A hint of mischief is in Coco's eyes as he turns to you after knocking the guy out who had went from telling you how beautiful you were to telling Coco he was a bitch and he could steal you away if he really wanted to.. "My bad ma" he states with a smile. You had been begging for a normal date night away from the clubhouse and brothers. As much as you loved them and the club sometimes it was nice to have a quiet dinner at a nice restaurant outside of town. You couldn't help the smile and laugh as you shook your head as you reached for his hand quickly moving to your car. "I can't take you anywhere. Always getting me in trouble" he continued as the sound of sirens could be heard in the distance.
Tumblr media
"Oh, really? You think you have a chance of taking me?" inquired Angel his voice casual as he turned to the younger guy who had sat down at your table. The guy had been chatting you up since you had stepped into the packed clubhouse looking for your man. Not taking a single word you had said to heart as you told him to back off and that your boyfriend was not one to play with. You watched as the mans eyes widened as he took in Angel and his eyes flickered over the patches. Angel was an imposing man sitting down but when he stood up the guy took off. "Thought I was the bitch?" laughed Angel as he sat back down looking at you.
Tumblr media
Short king Bishop oozes big dick, don't fuck with me energy. Which is why you are stunned into silence as well as Gilly and Angel at what the new prospect has just said to him. The air is tense as Bishop contemplates the young man who had just dared to say he could fuck you better than him. "I assume you only said this because you think my beautiful goddess of a wife is a club girl correct? " asked Bishop as he gently taps your hip. Once you have stood up off his lap he stands up and walks to the new prospect who has decided now to shut his mouth. "I'll help you out son. There is no correct answer" states Bishop as he grabs the guys arm and leads him out the door.
Tumblr media
Manny is all slow blinks and tight smiles as he listens to the man next to him at the bar describe all the ways he would do you as they wait for EZ to get them beers. "Said she has a boyfriend, dumb bitch doesn't know what she's missing out on. He's obviously a winner since he left her alone." states the man as he nudges Manny who chuckles darkly. "Yeah, the mother of my four beautiful girls over there sure is missing out" he states before punching the guy in the face. "Also im her husband not her boyfriend" states Manny before making his way to you. "This is why I don't bring you out ma. Always got me acting up" joked Manny as he pulled you too him for a kiss.
Tumblr media
Guero is all angry forehead press and fists the minute the guy grabs your arm to turn you too him. The two of you had been taking a break from dancing and wee making out in the back of the packed clubhouse. You had mentioned to Guero earlier that the guy had been hitting on you and said he could take your boyfriend in a fight when you mentioned you were not single. Guero had wanted to put his fist through the guys face then but you had been so amused he had pushed the idea down so that he could keep that smile on your face. Now though it was on. No one touched what was his.
Tumblr media
The moment your sweet Teddy Bear said excuse me and stood up you knew the guy was done for. It never ceased to amaze you how many people thought it was fun to poke the grizzly bear of a man that was Gilly. You smiled as he blew you and your daughter who was cooing away in your arms kisses before grabbing the back of the guys neck and walking him out of the clubhouse. "Still getting guys in trouble, four days after giving birth" chuckled Coco, making you laugh, as he stood up. "I'll make sure he doesn't kill the kid"
Tumblr media
Creeper is silent as he watches you and the guy go back and forth. You have just as much blood on your hands as he does, he knows you can handle yourself. He won't hesitate to step in though if you want him too. He patiently waits for your cue as he sips his beer, chuckling when the guy says he can do you better and asks what position you like. "Do you like having your ass fucked?" you inquire as you tap Creepers arm. "As her bitch of a boyfriend I like to watch her fuck guys in the ass" he states as he looks the guy up and down.
Tumblr media
"Who's the bitch now?" growled Bottles as he stood over the guy he had just punched in the jaw much to the shock of everyone. The guy had been following you like a scenthound, not taking your rejection of an offer to dance or to sneak off to a more private area. Even when you stated your boyfriend was a Mayan he was undeterred, going so far as to push you into a wall saying your boyfriend must be a bitch if he wasn't with you. Pushing Guero out of the way as he congratulated Bottles you pulled him to you demanding he take you home to bed now.
Tumblr media
EZ is willing to let the guy slide. He's drunk and clearly overcome by your beauty. Who wouldn't be? He could not blame the guy for coming over and hitting on you. He probably figured you two were just friends sitting here having a drink and a chat. Its an easy mistake if you are new like he was. The two of you shared a look and small chuckle when the guy said your boyfriend was probably a bitch. He was going to let hat slide too but when the guy angrily slapped your beer out of your hand.....letting anything slide was out the door.

"Macarons??"
You beamed as you looked into the box, the selection of pastel treats looking delightful. They were expensive for their size, one of the main reasons you never really splurged on them. You'd had one or two here and there, but a box of 24? You had never spent that kind of money on a cookie. That didn't mean that you couldn't admire them though. You'd saved some aesthetic tiktoks of them, opting to one day spoil yourself with a beautiful box of them. You hadn't ever told Manny about your desire to have them, knowing that if you merely mentioned it, he would've splurged on the most beautiful and expensive ones he could find. He was just like that when it came to you. So you'd kept it to yourself, deciding that you would get yourself a small box for Valentine's Day, seeing as you didn't have a Valentine.
But Manny had beat you to the punch.
He grinned as he watched your eyes light up, happy that his gift had paid off. At first, a few months ago when he was trying to plan out what he would do for the special day, he wasn't sure if the treat was one you would be into. He wanted to make sure that whatever treat he got you for Valentine's Day, was one you would enjoy and preferably one you would remember.
When he saw the saved tiktoks, he was thankful that he'd had the idea to hack your phone a few weeks before.
His intentions had been innocent enough, really. He just wanted to be able to know what you liked. He always got you gifts, eager to please. He had already decided he was going to put together a Valentine's Day basket for you, but he needed to make sure everything was perfect and to your liking. He needed you to see how much he cared about you and wanted you to be happy. Wanted you to be his. All of his previous gifts had warmed you and gotten you closer to him, but you still weren't his. His hope was that this gift would change that.
So scrolling through your likes and saves, he'd found a handful of videos of the delicate treat and knew then that was his way into your heart. And right he had been.
You smiled eyes raking over all of the colors, the sweet aroma wafting up to your nose in a swirl of vanilla and raspberry and cinnamon and-
"I'm glad you like it."
The Mayan looked proud as he eyed you, happy with his decision. Your mouth was practically watering at the smell and he knew you couldn't wait to try them.
"Go 'head, mama. Let me know how they taste."
Your fingers hovered around the box, all of them looking so good you were having trouble picking which one you wanted. You settled on a baby pink one and picked it up, admiring it.
"This one looks just like one I saw a video of."
Manny nodded, knowing the exact tiktok you were speaking of. He didn't say that though. He knew that was the one you were going to have picked first. He knew you'd be excited and enthusiastic to dig into them.
That was why he had paid to have a little something slipped into the filling.
He wasn't going to hurt you, of course not, he would never do that. He just wanted you soft and compliant. Honest. Needed to know if you felt the same way. Needed to know how you felt about him wanting you to be his and only his. So he'd gotten the idea from one of his brothers, 'truth serum cookies' he'd called it. The company made desserts for different purposes. Some had aphrodisiacs for couples to ramp up their sex life, others like the ones he had ordered had a drug known to make people relaxed and forthcoming, perfect for those who struggled with shyness when it came to dirty talk.
In Manny's case, he just wanted you to be relaxed and open enough to tell the truth about if you wanted him as much as he wanted you. He needed to know if you would be his, and if you didn't want to be, then why. He'd brought it up to one of the Yuma brothers and he'd sold him on the idea. 'She won't even know. You can't taste it, no one would buy them if they tasted weird. They crush it up and mix it with some sugar, then add it to the cookie's filling. She won't have a clue. And you'll get to figure out whether she wants to have your crazy ass or not.' he had said.
He watched as you brought the macaron to your mouth and took a bite, catching a crumb in your hand as you licked the rest from your lips. Manny licked his own instinctively, eyes raking over your face as he watched you eat, almost in a trance. You smiled, covering your mouth as you chewed, not wanting to make more of a mess.
"It's delicious."
He smiled, then shook his head as you held it up to him for him to take a bite.
"Not a fan of raspberry. Enjoy it."
He lied cooly, and you bought it, taking another bite. You pushed the box towards him and motioned for him to take one as you both stood there at your kitchen counter. He obliged, not wanting you to suspect anything, and grabbed the cream-colored one with light brown filling, taking a bite.
"Cinnamon."
"Mmm."
He held it out for you to take a bite of your own and you did, enjoying that one just as much as the other. You both stood there together, eating and chatting, a whole row missing before you knew it. You'd eaten most of them, and he wasn't worried about being affected. He didn't have anything to hide. You let out a yawn, and grabbed the lid, covering up the box with a laugh.
"The crash after a sugar rush always sucks."
Manny nodded, his eyes on you as he watched your eyes grow a little heavier, your lids moving a little slower as you blinked.
"Maybe we could go chill on the couch."
You nodded and offered him a relaxed smile, that idea sounding wonderful.
"Yeah, that sounds good."
He followed you as you walked, hands itching to grab your hips as they swayed in front of him. You were a goddess in his eyes. A treasure that was meant to be his, but was always just out of his reach. But he was also a gentleman, despite his unorthodox methods of gaining the truth. So he kept his hands to himself, sitting down beside you on the couch. He angled his body towards you slightly like he always did, except this time it was because he was keeping an eye on you.
Your eyes were soft, your face smooth and relaxed. He looked you over, not worried about you thinking he was weird or creepy for how long he stared at your face. He took in the angle of your nose, how your lashes fluttered on the tops of your cheeks. The softness of your lips. Your voice was gentle when it spoke, and his eyes were watching your lips as they parted, but it still caught him off guard.
"Do you think I'm pretty, Manny?"
There it was. The serum already going into effect. His eyes drifted away from your lips and locked with yours.
"I do, mama. I think you're gorgeous."
You smiled softly.
"I hoped you did."
He inquired even though he knew exactly what you meant.
"Hoped I did what?"
You shrugged, head tilted to the side as you gazed at him.
"Hoped you found me pretty."
He swallowed, his fingers wiggling as they screamed to touch you.
"Well, I do. I think you're the prettiest little thing I've ever fuckin' seen."
He watched as your throat moved, your swallow audible and pulling a smile from him.
"What about you? You think I'm handsome?"
You didn't hesitate to nod.
"I think you're very handsome. I think you're sexy."
He adjusted himself in his seat, pants starting to feel a little snug.
"That so?"
"Mhmm."
You stared at him, fingers twiddling with the hem of your shirt.
"I wanna sit in your lap. If that's ok."
He melted, his nod sharp as he lifted the arm that was toward you, inviting you in.
"C'mon then."
He felt his pulse quicken as you crawled over, a hand on his shoulder to steady yourself as you tossed your leg over his and then settled down in his lap, his eyes peering up at you. Your hands rested on his chest, fingers reaching up slightly, the tips tracing over the tattoo on his throat.
"Wanted to sit like this for a while."
The Mayan allowed his hands to finally drift over onto your hips, fingers digging in ever so slightly into the plush skin.
"Wanted you to sit like this for a while too."
Your giggle was breathless and it took everything in him not to start dragging your hips back and forth on him.
"Anything else you been wanting?"
You looked at him, fingers still stroking the ink.
"Been wanting you to touch me."
Manny groaned, his hands gripping you tighter.
"Oh yeah? Where?"
You shrugged and he shook his head, sucking his teeth.
"Nah, none of that. Where you want my hands at, pretty girl?"
He slid his hands down further, fingers digging into the flesh of your ass, gripping and pulling at your cheeks.
"Here?"
You nodded, your hips rocking slightly. You pulled one hand away from his throat and instead gripped your own breast, your nipple hard under your palm already.
"Maybe here too."
He cursed quietly under his breath and pulled only one hand away to replace yours, squeezing at the soft swell of your breast, feeling like he was in heaven.
"Yes ma'am."

The Hope in the Fault Lines | Part 4

I don’t have enough requests to have a tag list or anything so I’m relying on faith and prayers to get this in front of the ppl who liked the previous parts, so PLEASE REBLOG THIS 🥺 I’ll love you forever fr. Here are links to part 1, part 2, and part 3 if you haven't read them already! Word count: 13k (I AM SORRY I GOT CARRIED AWAY.)
Eleven months later
Time was funny.
Together, you, Sara, and Mingyu had watched the summer fade into a hazy autumn, where the leaves faded into gold and red and orange and then fell, leaving bare branches clawing at the sky with skinny fingers. The winter had been a long one — Christmas was nearly unbearable without Jeri and Jisung to keep you company. But spring prevailed, as it always did, and now you watched as the latest of the April blossoms popped through the surface of the earth.
It’s been almost a whole year since the accident. At the outset, your grief had been like a massive wall. It was hard to see around it, and pushing against it was useless. Now, the grief was still there, but had transformed into something more akin to a stray dog that followed you around. It was always present, but you could still move with it, and it wasn’t always unwelcome. The pain of loss had been tempered by the stretch of time, the therapy sessions faithfully attended every Tuesday morning, and the love that had grown between you and Sara.
At a year and a half, she toddled around clumsily still, but could run and jump and talk. She was extremely independent and energetic, and sometimes when she was displeased the look on her face was so reminiscent of Jeri that it made you pause. However, where before that would’ve made you cry, today it fills you with comfort. You also, surprisingly, saw yourself in her — she was adventurous and tenacious, and didn’t like to be told she couldn’t do something. But she was also sweet, cooing over even the beetles in the grass or the spiders in the corner. The force of your love for her was both surprising and strong, because when she’d first come into your life, you had felt uncertain you’d ever get the hang of being a parent. Now, you could hardly imagine life without her. She made each day full of an infinite meaning — everything you did now was for her.
And then, there was Mingyu. The relationship between you was sweet and easy and didn’t demand anything more from you than you could handle. You had learned early on how kind Mingyu was and how easy it was to talk to him, but you had come to know him even better over the time since your illness, and you had become endeared by his pouty expression when you teased him, the clumsiness you suspected was a result of becoming very big very fast and still not knowing his own strength, and the comforting timbre of his voice, as well as so much more. Mingyu made you feel like you never had to do anything by yourself, with a talent for drawing the vulnerability out of you when you were keeping yourself from being helped. And even though he was positive and upbeat most of the time, he never expected that from you. His grace in handling your down days was enough to convince you that in any other circumstance, this man would have been your perfect match, inside and out.
But the circumstances are what they are, and so you can’t let yourself give in to what you want. It has been a long time since Mingyu has held you — since the nightmare, in fact. Which, you remind yourself forcefully, is a good thing. It was professional of you to keep that physical distance. Because, Heaven help you, you were struggling to keep any emotional distance between you.
When Mingyu had come back to work after he’d stayed the night at your place that one fateful night, a pattern had begun. When you’d come home, Mingyu asked you about your day. You’d give him the low-down: “Emily dropped the pencil sharpener and thought I’d fire her…am I that scary?”, “we got a story with Brie Larsen,” “one of our writers is getting married in a few weeks and invited me”, and so on. Then you’d ask for his updates: “Sara ate a solid banana today,” “Bora and Morrie came over for a play date”, “I lost Sara for fifteen minutes today and found her in the massive drum of flour”. This usually kicked off an hours-long conversation full of teasing, laughter, and the occasional philosophical discussion that only ended when one of you mentioned Mingyu should go home and get some rest. The past eleven months of this behavior had only made you more and more drawn to Mingyu; it was how you learned he learned to cook from helping his mother in the kitchen, and that he also had a little sister whom he loved dearly, and about the friends from college he still saw frequently, all of whom he seemed to only have positive feelings for. You had started to wonder if there was a person he didn’t like. And all of this added up to you being absolutely smitten with him.
But you also keenly felt the guilt of having a crush on your nanny. After all, it felt like such a midlife-crisis move to pull. You tried to comfort yourself in the truth that Mingyu was usually the instigator whenever the both of you rocketed over those carefully drawn lines in the proverbial sand, but you knew it was also partially your responsibility, because you never talked to him about maintaining a more professional distance. The fact was, you didn’t want any more distance at all between you and Mingyu, but you understood how complicated it might be if someone who essentially made sure he could pay his bills confessed romantic feelings for him. Not that you’d ever take advantage of him, but it also felt unfair to put him in a situation where he had to trust you on that.
So you stayed as you were — for eleven months that had proven to put you through every emotion on the spectrum. You laughed at Mingyu, you competed against Mingyu, you wondered about Mingyu, you worried about Mingyu.
But most of all, you yearned for Mingyu.
You try not to let it show as you watch Sara play with her dolls in the living room, supplemented by the dollhouse Mingyu spent a whole day building for her. “Tomorrow’s the big day!” he says. “Are you excited?”
“I am,” you hedge, half-listening as Sara clumsily tucks a doll into its bed and says goodnight. “A little nervous, too.”
“Why are you nervous?” he asks. “You’ve practiced a lot. I almost have your speech memorized by now.”
You laugh. “It’s normal to be nervous, even when you’re prepared.”
He watches you carefully, noting how after a few moments of silence your eyes slip out of focus, miles away. After eleven months, Mingyu has learned that when you get like this, you are reliving a vivid memory inside your mind. The more this happens, the worse your dreams are later. So, after catching Sara before she whacks her head on the coffee table, he puts his hand on your knee so your mind connects to your body again. “Where were you this time?” he asks, releasing a squirming Sara to the floor, his gaze between you and her.
“My sister pep talking me before my valedictorian speech,” you say in a tiny voice.
“I didn’t know you were valedictorian!” Mingyu exclaims. “You were a huge nerd, weren’t you?”
“I still am,” you say, pretending to be scandalized. “Why do you think my magazine won an award for publishing? It certainly wasn’t because academic validation isn’t important to me.”
He laughs. “Your magazine won an award for publishing because it’s awesome. But I appreciate that you’re still trying to achieve academically even though you’re almost three years post-MBA.”
“I know when I’m being made fun of,” you sniff. “And I won’t have this from you, Mr. ‘I Flunked Out of Chemistry But They Still Let Me Play Basketball’ Kim Mingyu.”
Mingyu shoots you a reluctant grin. “I never should’ve told you that, first of all,” he says. “Secondly, despite all that, I think you would’ve liked me in high school.”
“I probably would’ve,” you admit. “You, however, would never have even looked at me in high school,” you say. “I had glasses, braces, the whole nine yards.”
He stretches, laughing. “I was into nerds, actually. Still am, in fact.” He smiles to himself, on cue with your heart turning all the way over in your chest.
You’re in dangerous territory, so you steer away. “Have you been practicing your ponytails?” you say seriously.
“Who do you think I am? Of course I have.”
“And you’re still not gonna show me what her hair looks like until the day of?”
“Of course not. It’s bad luck.”
You scoff. “I’m almost positive nobody thinks that.”
“I’m pretty sure I think that,” he counters.
“And I don’t even get to see her dress?” you ask.
“Not unless I get to see yours.”
You grin — this had been a constant “argument” since you’d come home with the dress bag, and you had denied his request to look at it. “What if I hate her dress?”
Mingyu shakes his head. “It’s impossible. She’s the cutest little girl in the world. So even if the dress sucks, she’s gonna look darling in it.”
“You make a good point,” you admit. “The dress doesn’t suck though, right?”
“You have so little faith in my taste,” Mingyu says, frowning. Then he lights up again and abruptly changes the subject. “Also, get this — Wonwoo says he’s gonna come and he’ll bring a girl.”
“Oh?” you say, lifting Sara off the ground as she reaches for one of the spark plugs in the wall. “Is it the same girl he brought home a couple weeks ago?” You’d become friends with Mingyu’s bespectacled, tech-savvy roommate due to occasional contact over the past almost-year, and the thought of him with a girl is sweet.
“Yeah,” Mingyu says. “But here’s the thing. He insisted — emphatically — that nothing was going on between them. They were just friends.”
“How long ago?”
“Like two weeks.”
“Maybe for one of them that’s true,” you suggest. “I mean, maybe he doesn’t like her like that.”
“No, he definitely does.”
“Okay, well, maybe she doesn’t like him like that.”
“Have you seen him?”
You laugh. “Have you seen yourself? I mean, if she hangs out at your place pretty often there’s really no reason she couldn’t like you too.”
Mingyu blushes, an uncharacteristically bashful move on his part, and you realize how much you’ve just given away. So you, blushing too, move over to Sara, beginning to play with her hands and let her grab at your necklace. “I should probably go,” Mingyu says. “Gotta be here early tomorrow to make sure you don’t sleep through your alarm again.”
“I only did that one time,” you protest. “And I don’t think I’ll sleep at all tonight.”
He makes a sympathetic noise. “Well, at least try, will you? It’s a big day for you, and you should be able to enjoy it.”
You smile up at him. “You’re right. Thank you, Mingyu. Say bye bye to Mingyu, Sara.”
“Bye, Googoo!!” Sara squeals — her endearing nickname for Mingyu.
She bounds over to him, and he sweeps her into his arms for a swift hug before setting her down gently. “Bye, Sara!”
***
“Wow,” Mingyu says, his eyes wide and mouth open.
You tug at the tight, silvery-blue fabric of the floor-length gown you wear, blushing. “Thanks.”
“You’re always pretty,” Mingyu begins, finally recovering from the shock of seeing you like this enough to speak.
“Oh, stop it,” you protest, hiding your face in your hands.
“But this is … wow,” he finishes.
Your face could not be warmer. “Please desist before I’m so embarrassed that I have to change.” You peek from behind your fingers at Mingyu, who is looking positively devastating in a suit and is holding Sara in her fluffy pink dress. He was right about her looking cute in anything, but the dress suits your sweet, sassy, rambunctious little girl. And, true to his word, he has tugged her hair into two adorable pigtails fitted with feathery pink bows to match the dress. “You did an amazing job with Sara.”
Mingyu finally tears his eyes away from you to look proudly at Sara’s outfit. “Never doubt me again,” he jokes.
“I never will,” you vow.
“Well, I think we need to leave,” Mingyu says. “I wonder what everyone will think about me arriving with the two prettiest girls at the party.”
You roll your eyes as you grab your things. “You’ll fit right in,” you tell him. “You look amazing.”
“Thanks,” he says, wrestling a grumpy Sara into her car seat. “Shall we?”
The party is a fancy affair. Big names in publishing mill around with your employees, some turning to greet you and offer words of congratulations when you walk in. Mingyu is impressed with how gracious and genuine you are with everyone, even the people you’re just being introduced to, his heart swelling with pride whenever you include him and Sara as a part of your introduction.
Sara is amazed at the surroundings, looking around the beautifully furnished hotel meeting room with its twinkling lights in an overstimulated stupor. Plenty of the female employees are talking and whispering at the sight of her in Mingyu’s arms, a few even venturing to approach him and play with Sara’s hands or feet. “So, are you her boyfriend?” A blonde in a stunning red dress asks, leaning in with hooded eyes.
“No, I’m just her nanny,” Mingyu says with a laugh. “Um, excuse me.”
You have to bite back a smile as Mingyu meets eyes with you nervously. “Meredith from accounting is zeroed in on you, I see,” you tease him.
“She’s very friendly,” Mingyu agrees. “I think I saw Wonwoo come in, though.”
You look toward the door. There he is — tall, slender, with his signature glasses and a shy but very happy smile, hand-in-hand with a pretty girl in a pink dress. “They look cozy,” you observe. “Say hi to him for me, will you? I need to get ready to speak to everyone.”
Mingyu gives you a prolonged look that makes you more nervous than even the impending speech before he answers, “sure thing, boss. Break a leg. You’ll be great.”
It feels surreal — all of these people are mostly people who you see every day, mingling with publishing giants and friends, and everything is different. After what feels like no time at all, you take the low stage to begin your speech.
You take a deep breath, looking in the crowd for two specific people, and it isn’t until you’ve met eyes with Mingyu, who is softly smiling at you, and aimed a wave at Sara, that you begin. “This award is something I’ve been working toward since we started the magazine. I naively thought that receiving this award would finally help me to feel like I belonged in this industry, or that all the time I’d spend slaving for this business was actually worth it.
“The past year, however, has been the absolute hardest of my life. As many of you know, my sister -- the person who encouraged me to start this business, and the person without whom many of you, including me, would probably not have jobs -- was killed in a hit-and-run accident a year ago Thursday. And when you go through something like that, well...your perspective on life definitely changes. I have always been a believer in the power of story, but because of the life-altering experiences I’ve had over the course of this brutal year, I gained new insight into the stories that we should be telling with the voices we have in the time that we have them. I’m convinced that the team’s vision aligning so well with this change in priorities is why I’m on this stage accepting this award. So I have some people to thank for this.”
You’re practiced enough that your voice only shakes a little as you begin this part. “Firstly, my editor, Cory, who not only held us together while I was completely incapacitated, but also understood perfectly how to make this thing into the kind of thing that wins awards like this. If this was a ship, Cory would be at the helm, and I’m so glad that we have someone who is a perfect navigator. Cory knows the metaphorical sea and stars like an albatross, and he deserves to be the one speaking to you today, but we drew lots and I got the short stick.” The crowd laughs, and in the audience, Cory raises his glass to you, his arm snaked around the waist of his new girlfriend Lele.
You smile at his gesture and continue. “Secondly, to my assistant, Emily. She was hired only one single month before the accident, and she has become indispensable to me. One thing you should know about her is that her desire to do everything she can for anyone who needs it is not just one of her biggest professional strengths, it is also one of her best personal ones. Her competence and kindness will take her far -- here or wherever she goes.” When you spot Emily, her eyes are streaming with tears, and she gives you a little apologetic shrug as she wipes her eyes.
“Thirdly, I cannot thank the writing team, the creative team, the social media team, and the editing staff enough for supporting me through my bereavement and continuing to do such excellent work. I am grateful to have hired the right people, so that I can be confident that this important work we do will not be stopped if I am stopped.”
Now, the final message -- the part you hadn’t shown Mingyu yet. Partially because you wanted to surprise him, and partially because you were terrified of what he would know about you because of it, and you wanted to prolong the moment. You steady yourself and press on. “Finally, there have been a number of people in my personal life without whom I couldn’t be here today. Friends who pulled me out of the mud, almost literally, neighbors who looked out for my lawn, the kindest friend who watches my beautiful niece while I come to work --” and at this point, you intentionally avoid Mingyu’s gaze, “and Sara herself, who gives me a reason to wake up in the morning and who carries Jeri with her in her eyes. You have all been my hope in the fault lines, and without you, I would be so lost. Thank you for being my solid ground when everything around me was shaking.
“And of course, to my dear sister, my best friend, Jeri. From wherever you are, know that this award means infinitely more because of what I learned from you. I wish I could’ve learned it with you beside me, but I’m hoping every single day that when it’s my time, I’m even half of the person you are. Thank you.”
The audience applauds, and someone hands you a small glass statue as the physical evidence of your award, and pictures are snapped, and then it’s all over. You’re back in the crowd, and you’re drained and a bit embarrassed and empty, and the only person you want to talk to is Mingyu. You want to run to him and throw yourself into his arms and let him carry you away from the stage and the people who are flocking to you to hug you and offer condolences and shake your hand and congratulate you. But you can’t, so you let them approach until Emily (bless her) extracts you from the crowd.
“Your parents came,” she whispers to you, and you feel your jaw clench.
“Where are they?” you ask through your gritted teeth.
“By the food. I’ve tried to hold them off, but they want to meet Sara.”
“Where is she?”
“Mingyu’s changing her diaper.”
You grab Cory’s arm as he passes. “My parents are here. Please go in the bathroom and tell Mingyu not to leave until you come back to get him.” With an alarmed look, he obeys, and you stalk toward the two elderly people staring haughtily around at the crowd at the food table.
Your mother sees you first. As she meets your eyes you remember her wearing that same look while your father had “disciplined” you — with a belt. It’s a shrewd look, a calculating one. The last night you’d lived with them, before you’d taken Jeri and gotten out of that place, she had told him she didn’t think the message was sinking in enough. She suggested more stripes might remind you of “a woman’s place.”
As hard as she is to look at, he is infinitely worse. Your father has grown hunched in the ten years since you’ve seen him, his face becoming even more gaunt and severe, almost cartoonish in its caricatured lines. You stand up straighter and realize that you’re not afraid of him anymore. “What are you doing here?” you ask, your voice quiet so as not to attract attention and cause a scene.
“Is it a crime to want to see my daughter and granddaughter?” your father croaks.
“I don’t remember inviting you,” you say shortly. “I want to know how you found out about this.”
“I read about it in the paper,” he says.
“Well, thank you for coming,” you say. “But I think I made it clear that I don’t want contact with you after the trial.”
“The judge only ruled that Sara would live with you. They didn’t mention that we could never see her,” your mother claims.
“No, they didn’t say that. But I did,” you remind her, your voice surprisingly gentle despite your anger.
There is a sudden warmth from a hand at your shoulder. “Are you okay?” Mingyu asks quietly.
You turn to face him, giving him a tight smile. “Yeah,” you say, a bit shaken but still determined. “Where’s Sara?”
“Wonwoo is watching her,” he replies. “Do you need help with them?”
You had told him about your parents and the vaguest details of their abuse around month four. He knew you’d left home at seventeen with Jeri in tow, determined to let her be safer than you had been. He knew that there had been a nasty custody battle necessitating your admission of everything they’d done to you so that Sara would never be subjected to the childhood you had. He didn’t know that you’d had to teach yourself how to do makeup in seventh grade to hide the black eye your father had given you, because your mother believed makeup to be deceitful and of the devil. He didn’t know all the times you’d stepped in front of Jeri to prevent your father from hurting her. He didn’t know the fear you’d felt when they took you to court to try and take your niece away from you — all on the basis that a child without her father, raised by only a woman, could never be complete.
He didn’t know everything, but still he was there at your side. Big and strong and never angry except for right now, his dark eyes flashing and his mouth set in a straight line. You’d wondered how your soft, silly, sweet Mingyu had managed to survive for years as a federal agent, but now you knew. Mingyu could be intimidating if he wanted to be – he simply chose not to be most of the time.
You sigh, relieved. “I think I would like help with them, actually.”
This is all Mingyu needs to spring into action. He moves for your father, taking him by the arm in what you’re sure is a vice grip, as you link an arm around your mother’s arm. “I need the both of you to go,” you tell her. “And if I see you again, I’ll file a restraining order. Don’t think I won’t. I’d prefer not to do it, so just leave us alone. We’re happy.” You release her in the hotel lobby, and she and your father scurry away.
As you walk back to the party with Mingyu, you ask, “did he say anything to you?”
Mingyu shrugs. “Nothing worth repeating.” The two of you hunt down Sara, and you give her a big hug before letting her finally wander around on her own two feet, which she’s been begging Wonwoo to do. It does your heart good to watch her be herself without any fear of retribution.
You’re surprised at how normal you feel after returning to the group. Your hands still shake, and you do keep a closer eye on Sara than normal, but you don’t dwell on it. It didn’t burn you like you expected to see them again. Perhaps, you reason, although the pain of seeing your parents again is very different from your grief, and there is nearly ten years of distance between that pain and your current life, you have actually become stronger. The thought makes you warm from the inside out. The rest of the event goes by in a blur -- all the way up until you overhear Mingyu talking to Wonwoo. “Come out with us tonight,” Wonwoo plies.
“I don’t know,” Mingyu says, sounding reluctant.
“You should,” you find yourself saying, grinning as they both jump at your words. “Sorry for eavesdropping. Why wouldn’t you go?”
Mingyu snorts. “I’ll go if you go.”
You grin regretfully at Wonwoo. “Sorry,” you say. “I have the duties of motherhood to attend to.”
Bora is standing nearby and interjects. “Actually, I think it’d be great if you went. I can take Sara tonight.”
You shoot her a look. “I wasn’t even invited. That was a joke.”
“No, you’re definitely invited,” Wonwoo says. “Please come. Seungcheol is going to be there, and he just got rejected, so he needs someone more responsible than me to look after him. Who better than a literal mother?”
You roll your eyes. “I didn’t birth her, Wonwoo.”
“You’re still her mom,” says Bora. “I’m taking her home with me. Go out, have fun! It’ll be good for you. The last time you went out, you ended up finding Mingyu. So maybe tonight something great will happen.”
You can hear the suggestive edge in her voice. It has you glaring daggers at her as she reaches for Sara. “I’ll leave you to it,” she says, and scurries away.
***
“I’m not good at drinking,” you confess over the music.
“Then don’t drink too much,” Wonwoo says.
“Is everything just that simple for you?” you ask him, amused.
He grins. “Actually, yes.” He looks over to where the girl he brought and Mingyu are chatting happily about some inane thing, and frowns. “Sometimes even I complicate things, though.”
“I think she really likes you.” Wonwoo turns to look at you, eyes wide, and you chuckle. “I think we’re alike,” you explain. “Neither of us are very forward usually, or very good at expressing ourselves.”
Wonwoo nods with a sheepish grin. “That’s accurate.”
“So…do you like her?” you ask him bluntly.
Wonwoo clears his throat and downs a shot before replying. “I’ve been in love with her for a long time.”
“And you still haven’t said anything?” you ask sympathetically.
“Well, I mean, we’ve kissed. And we’ve held hands. And I kind of confessed.”
You eye him skeptically. “And would you say she’s more like you and I, personality-wise, or more like Mingyu?”
“Definitely Mingyu,” he replies.
“Do you think Mingyu would pick up on a half-confession?”
Wonwoo thinks to himself. “He’d probably understand what you’re saying, but I think he’d be too worried to do anything about it unless you were explicit. He’s too polite and cautious to cross a line like that.”
You try not to think about what he’s saying in the context of you and Mingyu, but it’s hard. “So, do you know what you need to do?” you ask him, trying to focus on the task at hand.
“Own up to my feelings, probably.” Wonwoo laughs at himself.
“You’ve already kissed,” you point out. “And she’s stuck around. If she hated that you kissed her, it might be one thing, but it seems to me like she’s pretty into being with you. You don’t have to be poetic, just tell her how she makes you feel and let her respond how she wants.”
He nods, putting the shot glass back on the bar and standing up. “Thanks,” he says. “You might consider taking your own advice, too.” And with that, he walks across the room to the girl and leans in to whisper something to her. The two of them leave together, and Mingyu turns to look at you, giving you a quizzical look.
“What did you say to him?” he asks, coming to sit in Wonwoo’s vacated seat.
“I told him to go for it,” you say, your head still buzzing with Wonwoo’s last comment to you. You sip sparingly at your piña colada and sigh. “What are we even doing here?” you ask Mingyu with an uncharacteristic giggle, probably brought on by the alcohol in your system. “I’ve never been a person who goes to bars, and since becoming a parent, I am even less of one.”
Mingyu laughs. “Well, I was having a great time talking with Wonwoo’s girl, until someone decided to be an inspiration. As per usual.”
“Where are Seungcheol and Vernon?” you say, ignoring his compliment but for a small grin.
“I think they’re in an intense game of pool. Vernon’s doing a better job distracting Cheol than I thought he would,” Mingyu says. “Although they’re both super drunk. We should go check on them.”
Mingyu takes your hand and guides you through the crowded bar, to a back room with a pool table, a ping pong table, and a couple of old arcade games. Vernon and Seungcheol have abandoned the pool table and are standing by the ancient-looking jukebox. As you watch, Seungcheol whacks the jukebox with his fist, and then groans in pain. Mingyu wordlessly jogs over to them and grabs Seungcheol’s hand to inspect it.
“Wanted it to play that one song,” Seungcheol slurs at Mingyu as you approach. “The one that reminds me of her.”
Mingyu looks at him in a mixture of amusement and worry. “Which one?”
“She’s Got a Way,” Vernon says, stumbling over. “Billy Joel is the best.”
“I think you should sit down,” Mingyu says to both of them as they lean heavily on him. You grab Vernon by the arm and help him over to the nearest collection of chairs, just as a pretty girl in a black dress strides up to Mingyu helping Seungcheol.
“Hi, handsome,” she says.
“Pia?” Mingyu says, shocked. “Oh, wow. Um, hi! It’s been awhile.” He rubs the back of his neck nervously.
“Sure has, soldier.” She doesn’t spare you or either of the other two men a single glance -- her focus is solely on Mingyu. “Where have you been?”
“I was living in Italy for a minute. You know, doing the whole nannying thing still.” He clears his throat. “But I’ve been back awhile.”
“Huh,” Pia says. “Can’t believe you haven’t lost your mind around all those kids yet. Let me buy you a drink. You can tell me all about it.”
Mingyu shoots you a sideways glance. You want to drag him away from her -- with your teeth, if necessary -- but you say nothing, hoping your face isn’t betraying the open hostility in your heart. “I don’t know,” he says, hesitating. “I’m supposed to drive later.”
“Then I’ll buy you a virgin daiquiri. Nothing hokey, I promise,” she says smoothly, taking Mingyu’s arm. “I’ll have you back here before you know it.” And with that, she waltzes him away as he looks at you, wide-eyed, over his shoulder.
You aren’t really mad at him. You could tell that if it were up to him, he’d have stayed with the three of you -- if only because he was worried about Vernon and Seungcheol being too much for you. And yet, it still rankled to see him walking away with another woman.
Another very pretty woman.
Maybe it’s this that leads you to order another drink when the waiter comes around. And another. Two drinks was enough alcohol to get you shit-faced. Three has you singing along to She’s Got a Way with the other two when it finally plays, even though you never sing.
By the time Mingyu arrives back to your group, he is shocked to see you with your arms slung around the other two, your cheeks pink and your eyes bright, belting another song along with them while Seungcheol weeps unabashedly into your shoulder.
“I think it’s time to leave,” he says, amused, propping Seungcheol up. “Stay right there, baby. I’ll be back.”
You blink. It feels like time is moving in slow motion as Mingyu turns to leave the bar. “Did he just call me baby?” you ask Vernon stupidly.
“I think so,” Vernon says, nodding. “It’d be weird if he called me that.”
You frown. “Why does he do stuff like that?”
Vernon shakes his head. “I don’t know. But what I do know is that the room is spinning, which means I drank too much, so I’m gonna just lay down for a second.”
You watch Vernon put his forehead to the table and give a drunken scoff. Mingyu arrives shortly afterward, lifting you princess-style out of your chair as though you weigh nothing and telling Vernon he’ll be back. He lays you in the passenger seat of your car, grinning down at you. “I see why you don’t drink often,” he teases. “You really are a lightweight.”
Seungcheol groans from the backseat. “Kiss her,” he commands, too loud, causing passerby to look over in shock.
To Mingyu’s surprise, your eyes light up. You still have a hand gripping his soft tee from when the world tilted alarmingly as he hoisted you off the chair, and your eyes are out of focus and you keep blinking at him to try and see him, and you’re uncomfortably aware that your hair is plastered to your forehead with sweat.
Adorable. He can’t help but think it. The alcohol has done its job admirably — your cheeks are flushed, and your usually-guarded gaze is open and almost dangerous in your blatant desire for him. It takes everything in him to restrain himself from listening to Seungcheol and kissing you in front of all these people.
But you’re so drunk, and he cares too much about you to do it like this, so he gently removes your fist from his shirt and runs back into the bar to get Vernon, hearing Seungcheol yell “Coward!” at him as he retreats. In no time he packs Vernon into the back of the car and drives off, monitoring you in the passenger side.
Seungcheol gets out at Vernon’s house, and together they stagger inside. Mingyu watches them in amusement until he hears you sniffling. Alarmed, he looks down to see you crying quietly into your hands.
“What’s wrong?” he asks, befuddled.
“I’m drunk,” you say in a choked, muffled voice. “People just cry when they’re drunk sometimes.”
He shrugs, then pats your shoulder. “I guess you’re right.” But he continues to watch as your tears continue to fall. Finally he pulls up to your house, and you claw at your seatbelt, trying to pull yourself loose. He chuckles and pops the button easily, and you fling the door open and promptly fall out of the car.
In a panic, Mingyu runs around the side of the car to see you weeping on your own driveway. When he moves to help you, you weakly try to push him away. “What’s going on, honey?” he says, suddenly realizing you may not have told him the truth earlier about the reason for your tears.
“I’m mad at you,” you admit, wiping your eyes. “And I cry when I’m mad.”
He purses his lips. “Well, can I at least get you inside? Then we can talk about it.”
You hesitate, then nod. Wordlessly he scoops you into his arms, and despite everything you’re feeling, you tuck yourself into the crook of his neck. He’s so warm, and you breathe in his scent, feeling the pain of the fall and your own feelings ease a little.
“So,” he says after he’s propped you up on your couch. “What’s this about, huh?”
You look up at him with red eyes. “I’m not actually mad at you.” You take a deep breath in. “I’m mad at me.”
The realization had hit you when you’d reached Vernon’s apartment. You had broken your own heart, beyond what you thought was possible after losing your sister, because every version of your future that you had even the slightest desire to live in had Mingyu in it. And not as your nanny — as your partner. The sudden impossibility of any of those futures becoming reality has rushed to you, because Mingyu needs a job, and you need a nanny, and to change anything about your relationship would cost him his livelihood — or cost the both of you the relationship you already have.
The only thing more impossible than explaining this was staying quiet, however.
So when he asks why, you tell him. “I ruined everything, Mingyu. I … I put us both in the worst possible situation.”
“How?” His eyes are zeroed in on your face, alight in the dim room.
You can almost taste your own heartbeat as you reply. “I…fell in love with you.”
Mingyu’s jaw drops.
“I know, it’s stupid. And you…you have better options than me, plus…we’re impossible. You and me, it would never work anyway. But I had to say it before I catch fire from the inside out.”
When you finally look at Mingyu, his shock has turned into a pained expression. “Impossible?” he repeats quietly.
You nod sleepily as the tears overtake you again. “Like trying to fit a round peg in a square hole,” you confirm, sniffling.
“Why is it impossible?” he asks. “Explain that.” For the first time since you’ve known Mingyu, he sounds angry with you.
And this makes you angry, too.
“Because this is not the life you deserve,” you say, your voice too loud for the living room. “Me, my grief, my baggage, a kid — you deserve your own family. One that isn’t so … messy.” Your voice cracks near the end of your rant, but you choke your tears down like you had in front of your parents and their rage all those years ago.
“What if you’re enough for me?” he challenges, eyes flashing.
“I’m not going to let you throw the whole life you could have with someone else away for someone who can’t give you what you want!” you yell. “I can’t love you like you deserve, Mingyu!”
Mingyu’s face crumples from anger to shattering grief. He stands up, grabs his jacket, and heads for the door.
You want to yell at him to come back, but feel too guilty and tired and stressed and awful to say a word. Before he opens the door, he half turns over his shoulder, not meeting your eyes. “I know you, and I know how you love. And it’s more than enough. You are what I want.” His tone is so careful and measured that you know he wants to yell back at you. He couldn’t be more serious, or more plain about what he’s saying. He finally looks into your eyes as he opens the door.
“If you ever stop being afraid of that, you know where to find me,” he says quietly.
And without another glance, he steps into the night, letting the door shut with an awful sense of finality.
***
“Get up,” says Bora sternly, ripping the sheets off you.
You groan and bury your face in your pillows. “No,” you say.
“Sara has been asking for you,” she insists.
You glare at her, but push yourself up and follow her downstairs. Sara is playing happily on the floor with Morrie. When she catches sight of you, she yells her toddler version of your name. Your heart partially pieces itself back together, and you respond to her reaching arms by pulling her close. “Hey, baby. Did you have a fun sleepover?”
“Yeah!” Sara yells excitedly. “We had soooooooooo much fun!!”
“We played with my princess toys,” Morrie informs you.
“Oh did you?” you say, trying to mimic their excitement.
“Yeah!! Mommy said you went out to have fun with a cute boy,” Morrie says. “Did you have fun?”
You glance over at Bora before responding. “I may have had a little too much fun.”
Bora hisses, but you shake your head at her, letting her know with your eyes that you’ll talk later. She hangs around for the morning, and when Morrie and Sara go down for their naps, she corners you.
“Tell me why Mingyu didn’t show up this morning,” she demands.
You sigh. “Because I am the dumbest, stupidest idiot known to all mankind.” And you tell her everything.
She listens intently. “And then he texted this morning and told me he needed some time,” you finish, swallowing hard around the lump in your throat.
“So what are you gonna do about it?” she asks you. You note the strain in her tone and realize she’s mad at you too.
“I don’t know,” you snap, her anger and your own pain making you feel trapped and defensive.
“That man is in love with you,” she says, exasperated. “I mean, it was really obvious that he feels the same way about you that you feel about him. And you’re just going to stubbornly suggest that he’s too good for you?”
“He literally is, though,” you say, desperate to make her understand. “He’s the perfect man. He could be with anyone. I have a kid and a company, and he deserves someone’s full attention and full heart, and that will never be me.”
Bora’s shaking her head. “No, listen to me. You’ve always been like this. You think love is this finite thing and once you give it to one thing you don’t have enough to give to something else. I thought Sara would change that about you. Do you forget about Sara when you’re at work?”
You think to yourself. No, in fact. You thought about her constantly. You even did your job in the hope that one day she would know she could do whatever she set her mind to. “And did you stop running your business just because you became Sara’s guardian?” Bora asks you, watching you as you think. “Of course you didn’t. Because love isn’t finite, you dummy.”
You stare at her, unconvinced. She sighs. “Sweetheart, I see the way you look at him. I know you know you have feelings for him, but when you think about an entire lifetime without Mingyu, when you think about him moving on with someone else, how does that feel?”
“Unbearable,” you whisper. You’ve already thought about it -- all last night, after you sobered up, you thought about what would happen to you if that was the last time you ever saw Mingyu. You knew you’d keep going, for Sara, like always. But you also knew you’d be a shell of who you were when you were with him, and you didn’t like to think how long it would take for you to fill yourself back up.
Which brings you to a greater worry. “What if I just…got attached? Because he was something for me to hold onto during all this?” you ask her.
“So what if you did? That’s as real a reason to be attached to someone as I can think of.”
“I don’t want to be trauma-bonded, Bora.”
She rolls her eyes. “Have you ever heard him say anything mean? About anyone?”
“No?” Because he hadn’t. Not even your parents. He was unfailingly kind.
“And has he ever made you feel inferior, for any reason?”
“Of course not,” you say. In fact, even when he teased, he was never disrespectful.
“And are the two of you able to talk about things together without antagonizing each other?”
“Yes,” you tell her, realizing all at once that your friendship with Mingyu is one of the healthiest you have.
Bora nods. “You need to go see him.” She grabs your hand and starts tugging you up the stairs.
“But I just got Sara back, and he says he needs time!” you protest, shocked.
“He needs time from the you that didn’t know you didn’t want to live without him,” she says forcefully, throwing one of your duffel bags onto your bed and tossing a random assortment of clothing into it.
“Why are we packing?” you ask her in alarm.
“You aren’t coming home tonight,” she says matter-of-factly.
“I’m not?”
“For the smartest person I know, you’re an absolute idiot,” she says. “Grab pajamas, sweetie.”
You know better than to argue with Bora when she gets into tornado mode. So you pull out your favorite sweatpants and a hoodie. Bora looks at your selections with a critical eye. “Comfort over style?” she asks, moving to your dresser. She opens the top drawer and extracts the pretty pink lingerie an ex boyfriend got you for Christmas three years ago.
“What is that for?” you ask as she grabs a black bra and panty set and shoves it into the bag as well. You feel the heat rising in your cheeks, the beating of your heart suddenly rattling in your brain.
She doesn’t respond, just takes you out to your car and hands you the keys she grabbed -- still on the counter where Mingyu had left them the night before. “I’m prohibiting you from coming home tonight. I’ll take care of Sara. Don’t worry about anything, just go.”
It’s not until you’re on the road that it hits you fully what you’re about to do. You’ve never done anything like this before -- never cared enough to take the risk that you’re about to take. You try not to imagine him slamming the door in your face and drive faster, wanting to get to the part where you’re standing in front of him saying what you need to say.
Finally, you arrive. You take a deep breath before dashing from the car to knock on Mingyu’s door. Your knocks are so persistent and loud that he answers right away, looking shocked to see you of all people on his porch with a duffel bag.
The first words out of his mouth aren’t what you expect. “Are you fleeing the country?”
“Huh?” you ask.
“Your duffel bag. And you look like you just robbed a bank,” he says with an eyebrow raised.
“Oh. Um, no. I...can I come in? I really need to talk to you.” You can hear how thick your voice sounds, and you try to clear your throat, but breathing is hard. Because there he is -- wet hair from a recent shower, white tank top with massive arms fully visible, and eyes that only just barely betray the hurt of the night before. The hurt you caused.
He steps aside to let you in, and you scurry past him and lay your bag down before you turn to face him. “Is Wonwoo here?” you ask first.
“Nah, he stayed with his girl last night.” Mingyu’s eyes are steady on you, urging you to explain yourself, and you’re more nervous than ever. You rub your slick palms on your sweatpants and will yourself to find the words to continue.
“I’m so scared,” you finally whisper to him.
His face is stony, unreadable. “Of what?” he asks.
“Everything,” you tell him. “All of this. I’m scared of you most of all.”
He softens a little. “Why?” he asks, taking a step toward you.
You step forward too -- close enough to touch him. And for the first time in your life, you make the move, reaching forward and taking his big hand in yours. “Because you, Kim Mingyu, could ruin me. I love you in a way that’s never supposed to end, and that terrifies me. I don’t ever want to lose you. And I could. I might have already.”
He’s very still, watching your face, looking for any signs of a lie. It’s such a relief to be touching him, and you’re so high on the feeling of his warm hand in yours, that you sigh as you bring his knuckles to your lips, breathing a kiss over each one.
“You mean it,” he says quietly, watching you adore him.
“I do,” you say. “I really, really do. I love you, Kim Mingyu.”
Those are the words that seem to hit him like a comet breaking through the atmosphere. He tugs you forward and into his arms and buries his face in your neck, squeezing you hard enough that you feel your ribs crack.
“I love you too,” he says, and you hear the hint of tears in his voice. “I wish I could find a way to tell you how I feel right now,” Mingyu says into your hair. “I meant what I said. You’re everything I ever wanted. Sara, too.”
And you know there’s still things that you’ll need to work out, but when you’re in Mingyu’s arms, it all seems to matter a lot less. The relief is instantaneous, his touch soothing the tightness in your chest, and you finally let yourself open up fully, melting into him and squeezing him back. Mingyu lets go of you only briefly and only partially to pull you over to the sofa, wrapping his arms around your middle from behind and pulling you to his chest.
“What made you decide to come?” he asks you, pressing a kiss to your temple.
You give a small laugh. “Bora,” you say. “It was actually barely my choice at all. She basically threw me out of my own house.”
You can feel the vibration of his own chuckle where your head rests against his chest. “Thank goodness for Bora.”
“Mmm,” you say in agreement, relaxing into his embrace. Mingyu’s arms tighten around you, and he leans down to kiss your shoulder through your several layers of sweatshirt. “So, how long have you liked me?” you ask him shyly.
He sighs. “It was almost at first sight for me,” he admits, blushing as your jaw drops. “I’m serious! You looked so cute that first morning. So frazzled, too.”
“Imagine my shock,” you explain, “when I hire a nanny and someone who looks like you shows up.” You trace a light hand up and down the arms wrapped around you, watching as they erupt into goosebumps.
“What do you mean? Did I look irresponsible?” he teases.
“No, you’re just the hottest man alive,” you say, grinning at him over your shoulder.
He looks both shy and pleased with himself. “I am?” he asks, his smile growing.
You turn back around and sink into him again. “My love, I’m going to need you to invest in a mirror. You clearly don’t know what you look like.”
Mingyu gives a soft laugh. Slowly and deliberately, he kisses down the side of your face from your temple down your cheekbone, bringing a hand up to turn your head to face him. “Would you like a kiss from the hottest man alive?” he asks very seriously, but he can’t help the corners of his mouth from turning upward just a bit.
You nod, privately and internally screaming to yourself. It’s been a very long time -- what if you’re bad at it?
But Mingyu is so careful. He just barely tilts your chin up and lets your lips meet his, soft and warm and tender. You let your lips part slightly, and lean in just slightly more, adding a bit of pressure. His hand on your face is steady and strong, and you can taste coconut oil on his lips from his chapstick. Kissing Mingyu is heaven, as thrilling as a roller coaster but as safe as a night at home in Sara’s rocking chair. Your mind is full of him — everything else seems to evaporate as though Mingyu is the only real thing in the world, and you cling to him, trembling, as though he might disappear too. You have to remind yourself to take it slow, although your heart clattering against your ribs is begging you for more from his lips, but can’t help a soft hum of pleasure from escaping you as he breaks the kiss and comes back for another, slipping his hand from your cheek to the back of your neck.
He smiles against your lips at the sound. “Enjoying yourself?” he asks, pulling away a bit.
And although you’re trembling with a surplus of emotions, you manage an eye roll. “I don’t have to answer that,” you say, breathing too heavily.
Those darling crow’s feet appear at the corners of his eyes as he notices the heat rising in your face, even brushing a thumb along the pink that has appeared on the apple of your cheek. “I would do things all the time to make that happen,” he admits, dropping a feather light kiss on your cheek. “You looked so cute, and it also made me feel like maybe you might love me back one day.”
“For your information, I liked you almost this entire time, too,” you tell him.
“When did it shift?” he asks. “Between liking me and loving me, I mean.”
You consider. “I think it became clearer to me when Sara started calling you dad — you remember? It was around her first birthday.”
“I remember!” he says. “I was worried you’d be mad.”
You smile. “I wasn’t mad at all. It occurred to me then that I couldn’t see myself finding anyone else to love Sara the same way, or that it would just all feel wrong and weird if it wasn’t you. I thought about it plenty of times beforehand, though. I think the first time I felt something real was when I got sick.”
“Two weeks in?” Mingyu asks, surprised.
“Yeah, about that long,” you confirm, and his eyes go wide.
“We’ve really just been driving each other crazy and not saying anything for the past however many months?” He laughs his high-pitched giggle. “We’re idiots!”
“Well, we figured it out eventually,” you say, spinning around to face him. “Now, I have a question.”
“Ask away,” he says, his eyes soft and adoring as he gazes at you.
“Why did you fall for me? I’m a wreck.”
He laughs again, and you swat at his arm. “I’m being serious. You couldn’t have come into my life in worse circumstances, and you’ve seen me at every extreme. Why do you love me? Why not someone...I don’t know, younger? Less riddled with grief? Someone who isn’t a package deal?”
He thinks for a minute. “Well, you’re not a decrepit old woman, as much as you might think you are. I’m actually six months older than you,” he informs you.
“You are? How do you know?”
“Your birthday is October 16. Mine is April 6 of the same year.”
“How do you know that?” you repeat, shocked.
“I stalked you on social media,” he replies, blushing himself.
You decide to let this go. “But you still haven’t explained why you love me,” you protest.
He looks at you, grinning at your eagerness with stars in his eyes, brushing your hair out of your face to see you better. “The first thing I loved about you was how much love you had for your niece,” he begins. “You didn’t resent her at all even though she’d sort of wrecked your whole life plan. That said something about you. I could tell you had a good heart.” He pauses. “The second thing I loved about you was your ass.”
You gape at him. He bursts into laughter, and you shove his shoulder. “I’m kidding,” he says. “Although,” he continues, reaching around to lift you onto his lap by said ass, “it is pretty incredible.”
You have to rest your hands on his chest to keep yourself upright, but you avoid meeting his eyes, even though you’re straddling him. You’re feeling like someone zapped you with a bolt of lightning as a tingle spreads from your inside out. “Hey,” he says softly. “Look at me, baby.”
You force yourself to look into his eyes, which are warm and smiling at you over a fine dusting of freckles across his nose. He shifts his weight a bit so you’re resting more comfortably across his hips, and your breathing grows heavier. “Is this okay?” he asks, a bit amused at how much the simple change in position seems to be affecting you.
Trying to look unbothered, you nod. “Please go on,” you say.
“What was I saying?” he asks, his hand dancing down your spine and making you shiver, still grinning up at you.
“Something about my ass,” you tell him, and he laughs.
“Right,” he says. “But seeing how you treated Sara was the first thing. Then I appreciated how hard you worked. And then I loved your humor and how you teased me. And then I admired how you opened up to me. And then —“
“Alright, enough,” you interrupt, embarrassed.
“The point is,” he continues with a broad smile, “it all came down to how much love you had inside you. You loved everything and everyone so much, in a way that was so unique to anyone I’d ever met. It was just you.”
You laugh at this – the very reason he fell for you was the thing you were worried about not being able to give him.
He sighs contentedly at the sound. “After a while the possibility of being with anyone else just felt … gross. You can ask Wonwoo — we had a few particularly miserable nights of drinking about it.”
You ruffle his hair. “You talked about me to your friends?”
“Almost constantly for almost as long as I’ve known you,” he confirms. “They’re so sick of me.”
You tsk softly, wrapping your arms around him and resting your head on his shoulder. “They deserve for us to take them to dinner,” you say, lightly scratching up and down his back. You can’t help but sigh in relief — Mingyu’s touch feels like stepping inside from the cold. You can feel yourself relaxing against him, your heartbeat slowing.
After several minutes of holding each other like this, Mingyu extricates himself. “One second, baby,” he says, pecking you on the forehead.
“Where are you going?” you ask, wincing at the whine in your voice.
“I just need to text my housemate,” he calls over his shoulder as he disappears into one of the bedrooms. “I’m gonna tell him not to come home.”
You suddenly become painfully aware of the pink lingerie buried in your duffel bag.
If it’s been awhile since you’ve kissed anyone, it’s been an age since you’ve had sex. And on top of that, all the sex you’ve had has been at worst embarrassing and at best okay. To say you’re nervous is an understatement — more nervous than you were the first time you ever undressed in front of a man, and you’re still fully clothed.
So you just wait for him to come back, smiling at him as he re-enters the room, flops onto the couch, and lays his head in your lap. You almost automatically run your fingers through the slightly longer hair on top of his head, letting your fingernails lightly brush against his scalp. He nestles into you and sighs. “So, what do you want to do tonight?”
You can’t help the choked laugh that escapes you. “Well…” you begin, as you blush and Mingyu looks up at you in alarm.
“Oh,” he realizes, sitting up. “That was such a leading question. I didn’t mean it like that.”
You put a gentle hand to his cheek. “I know you didn’t,” you say. “But…”
At your hesitation, he shakes his head. “We don’t have to do anything tonight. I just told Wonwoo to stay out because I want us to have uninterrupted time together before we need to go take care of Sara.”
The anxiety leaves you almost instantly. “Thanks,” you say in relief. “Um…are you hungry? You’ve cooked for me so often. It might be fun to do a little role reversal tonight.”
“I’m starving,” he admits, “but what if I take you out to a restaurant?”
You wrinkle your nose. “Looking like this?” you ask, gesturing to yourself.
“We could change?” he suggests.
“How’s this for compromise,” you say, feeling like he just doesn’t want you to do anything for him tonight. “We order takeout. I know this great pizza place.”
His face lights up. “Pizza sounds amazing.”
45 minutes later, you’re both tucked into Mingyu’s comforter on the sofa, eating pizza with your legs tangled together. “Let’s pick a movie,” Mingyu says with his mouth partially full.
You nod, handing him the remote. The two of you scroll through options before settling on Legally Blonde. When you bring up that you think Mingyu is only watching the movie for you, he side-eyes you comically. “This is one of my favorite movies!” he insists, and you let him have it.
But there’s starting to be an issue. The adrenaline of the impulsive decision to come to him and confess has worn off, and in its place is a new, unfamiliar, and powerful feeling. An unbearable ache you barely recognize, coming from body parts that haven’t been touched in years. And you definitely aren’t surprised that you’re attracted to Mingyu, but you are surprised at how turned on you are by him in his tank top, eating pizza straight out of the box. You’re practically salivating as you watch him watch the movie.
It doesn’t take long for him to notice. “Um, baby,” he says. “Everything okay?”
He’s got a little piece of cheese at the corner of his mouth, and his eyes are big and slightly concerned. Before you realize what you’re saying, you blurt out, “I wanna do it!”
“Do what?” he asks, bewildered.
“Do you,” you clarify. You grin sheepishly at him.
He chuckles a little, watching you carefully. “Are you sure?” he says once he can see you’re serious.
“Well, unless you don’t want to,” you backtrack, realizing that in your painful need for him you’d forgotten his feelings.
He raises an eyebrow. “No, I most definitely want to,” he says, scooting closer to you. He lightly brushes his fingers over your cheekbones, his touch sending a jolt of desire through your body. “But I don’t want you to feel like you have to. We can take it slow.”
“Mingyu,” you say, closing the distance between the two of you and taking his face in your hands. “We’ve been taking it slow for four months. I’m officially finished going slow with you.” You puff out a breath, uttering a quiet but desperate “please” that fades into the air like smoke, and before it has, Mingyu has pulled you into his arms and stood up off the couch. He kisses you deeply, catching your bottom lip between his teeth in a gentle bite that has you gasping for air. He stumbles blindly to the bathroom with your legs locked around his waist, sitting you down on the counter to continue kissing you, only pulling back to pull your sweatshirt up and over your head to reveal the bare skin and bra underneath.
And then, at a dizzying pace, he’s kissing down your cheek, down your neck, across your shoulder, feathering kisses over every freckle there until he’s brushing your bra strap to the side while one hand at your back slides up to unhook it.
You find yourself wishing you had a camera present for the way Mingyu’s face looks when he sees your bare chest for the first time. You half-expect him to bury his face in your breasts, so you tug him closer by the waistband of his sweats and press yourself closer to him, his fingers drawing lines of fire up and down the bare skin of your back as you hook your legs around him once more.
You’re tugging on his tank top, now, discarding the useless material so you can finally let his warmth completely envelope you skin-to-skin. He lifts you up off the counter and sets you down gently, taking a step back and gesturing to your shorts. “Need those off, baby,” he says, running a hand through his hair before smoothly untying the lace at the front of his own sweats and slipping them off.
But now it’s your turn to stare. You’d never really been given the chance to appreciate a naked body in such a present way, but you weren’t about to waste the opportunity when that body was Mingyu’s. You let your eyes roam over every perfect inch of him, only allowing yourself to look back at his eyes when he says your name. “You okay, love?” he says softly, taking a hesitant step closer.
You laugh softly. “That is not nearly a strong enough word.” You finally reach down and remove your own shorts, and Mingyu sucks in a breath from between his teeth. “Damn,” he exclaims, looking you up and down briefly before grabbing your hand and pulling you into the bedroom you can see through the other bathroom door.
He climbs into bed, under the covers, and pats the space next to him. You crawl in beside him as he pulls on a condom and then puts his hand to your cheek. “You ready?” he asks.
You’re breathless, you’re sweating, and you need him biblically. So you whisper “yes,” and Mingyu’s pulling you in for a deep, slow, spine-tingling kiss, his eyes fluttering shut, shifting his weight so that he’s hovering over you.
But then he does something you don’t expect, trailing kisses from your chin down your neck and chest. When he stops to drag his tongue over your nipples, you squirm a little, getting more and more heated by the minute. After a few minutes spent worshiping your breasts, he continues kissing down your body, pausing when he reaches your waist. “This okay?” he asks.
“Yes,” you say, about two octaves higher than your normal voice, and he grins before his next question.
“Can I go lower, sweetie?”
This is new. No one has ever offered to eat you out before, and you’re suddenly insecure.
Mingyu can see it on your face. “It’s just so that you can feel good,” he reassures. “If you don’t want it, I won’t do it.”
“No, it’s fine,” you say quickly. “It’s just new. But I trust you.”
“New?” he questions with raised eyebrows.
“My first time,” you confirm.
He scoffs. “Then I guess I have to make up for lost time,” he says, pulling your legs over his shoulders and going to work.
And you can’t help the sharp intake of air, nor the moans that escape you, because this feeling is one of the best you’ve ever felt in your life. Mingyu eats like his life depends on it, and your back arches in pleasure as he responds to your sounds, learning what makes you feel best. Your hand finds the back of his head, and you find yourself wishing he had more hair that you could grab as you tremble with his efforts.
It doesn’t take long before the pleasure overtakes you, washing over you in a warm wave and making you feel all floaty and euphoric, your whole body seizing and twitching feverishly as Mingyu works you down from your high. When he finally pulls back, his mouth wet and grinning, you have to remind yourself how to breathe. “How was it?” he asks.
You can only shake your head and stare at him, dumbfounded. He laughs, then kneels in front of you on the bed so you can see how hard he’s gotten. “Can I?” he asks you, and in response you sit up and kiss him before pulling him down by his neck on top of you, guiding him inside of you.
You whimper a bit at the stretch, but Mingyu’s left you wet enough that it slides right in, and it feels amazing. “You okay, baby?” he checks again, and you chuckle.
“Yeah, just kiss me, Gyu,” you say, almost drunkenly, and the nickname on your dazed lips is almost enough to bring him to his own climax. But Mingyu is a good listener, so while he thrusts into you, he kisses you, over and over and over again, pausing every now and then to kiss your neck so that he can hear you moan into his ear.
“Good girl,” he says after a particularly loud one. “Talk to me. I wanna hear it.”
“How does it feel for you?” you ask him breathlessly.
“Like heaven, baby,” he grunts. “You’re so good. So, so good.”
You come another two times with him inside you, the last bringing on his orgasm. He collapses on top of you with a moan right in your ear that nearly undoes you yet again – so you can know how good you really are – and the weight of him is once again what brings you back down to earth. Your brain is hopelessly mushy, and your legs are shaking, and you have never been so satisfied.
After a minute, Mingyu pulls out and rolls off of you, chuckling. “Wow,” he says simply.
“Wow,” you agree, blinking rapidly to try and clear your head.
He props himself up on his side and looks at you, his eyes devouring your body like a man starved. With a shaking hand, he traces the outline of your figure, from the curve of your shoulders to your waist to the widest point of your hips. “Can’t believe how lucky I am,” he says, moony-eyed and smitten. “God, you’re amazing.”
“Was it really that good for you?” you ask him, a little shy.
“Easily the best I’ve ever had,” he says. He sits up, pulling his condom off, and heads into the bathroom, returning in minutes with a towel and some wipes. And then he cleans you, kissing your thighs as he gently wipes you off, and your heart skips a beat as you watch him. Once again, nobody has ever done this sort of thing for you, leaving you feeling odd after every sexual encounter – almost used.
“Me too,” you say softly, knowing how you must be looking at him. “Do you want to shower?” you ask him when he catches you staring yet again.
“Yeah,” he says with a smile.
The rest of the evening is spent in comfortable, peaceful companionship. You tease Mingyu over his 2-in-1 shampoo and conditioner, and he responds by making out with you in the shower, which leads to both of you almost falling on the slick wet tiles. “Can’t help it,” he says with a laugh when you scold him, gripping the top edge of the shower and holding you around the waist to keep you upright. “I’m addicted to you.”
After the shower Mingyu hands you one of his softest big white t-shirts to wear, snapping several photos of you on his phone when you come out wearing it. “I miss you sometimes,” he explains, and you chuckle. “And I wanna remember tonight. I’m not exaggerating – it’s been the best one of my life.”
Finally, the two of you decide to actually finish Legally Blonde. You fall asleep before it’s over, but he stays up watching the way your eyelashes flutter in sleep, feeling that the sight of you curled up against his chest is the only sight he needs for the rest of his life.
And that’s how you end up spending the entire first night over at Mingyu’s sleeping on the couch in his arms.
***
“It’s Saturday,” you mumble into Mingyu’s neck.
“Mmm,” he agrees sleepily.
“So we can sleep in,” you sigh.
His arms constrict around your waist. “Sara,” he murmurs.
The word makes you open your eyes. The first thing you register is how warm it is – Mingyu’s big body is radiating heat like a furnace, intensified by how snugly he’s holding you against him. So you gently ease off his side and sit up, brushing a kiss over his cheekbone before heading to the bathroom.
You’re a wreck, your hair a knotty mess, in nothing but Mingyu’s tee. But your eyes — there’s something vibrant in them you haven’t seen in a while. There’s still a sizable amount of grief, a weight you doubt will ever fully be lifted, but you look happier.
You pull out one of the sweaters and a pair of jeans that Bora had packed for you and change, rolling your eyes at the lingerie still sitting in your bag. You’re just finishing up braiding your hair when Mingyu sits up. “Hey, sexy,” he calls across the room into the bathroom, his morning voice low and raspy.
“Hey,” you reply, smiling with the ease only he brings out of you. “How’d you sleep?”
“Really well,” he says, standing up and stretching. Then he comes into the bathroom with you, wrapping his thick arms around your waist and pressing a kiss to the base of the back of your neck. “I love you.”
You lean into his touch and let the joy sweep over you. “Good,” you say firmly. “I love you too, Mingyu.”
“I like the braids,” he says, looking at you both in the mirror, slouching to rest his head on your shoulder. “They’re really cute.”
“Thanks.”
“Maybe I can learn to do them on Sara,” Mingyu says, letting go of you and stepping into his own room and grabbing new clothes.
You shamelessly watch him as he strips out of his pajamas. “Maybe,” you murmur as he turns, shirtless, and catches you staring.
He grins. “You’re watching me change? Creep,” he teases.
So you make your slow way up to him, stopping just in front of him and sliding a hand from his abs up his chest. “Can’t help it,” you say lightly, watching in satisfaction as his cinnamon skin becomes a mess of goosebumps under your fingers. “You’re irresistible.”
He gives a grumpy sigh. “You better stop, or Sara’s gonna have to wait a couple more days before she sees either of us,” he says, and you are endeared to see that he’s blushing. Mingyu knew the effect you had on him, but that doesn’t make it any easier for him to rebuff you when you’re standing there with the morning light streaming in, lighting up your eyes, dragging your warm fingertips across his chest slowly and deliberately like you just want to savor him.
His words make you frown, but he gives a light chuckle and kisses your forehead. “Don’t worry,” he reassures you. “We’ll have plenty of time for just us. I’ll make sure of it.” He pulls on his shirt and his sweatpants, then grabs your hand. “Now let’s go see our little girl.”
Your face hurts from smiling so wide, and at this statement, your heart explodes.
***
Aside from all the I-told-you-so’s, the transition from a working relationship to a dating relationship with Mingyu was simple, easy, and absolutely painless.
He still came over every day. But now Sara watched as you kissed him goodbye in the morning on your way to work. She didn’t seem confused at all by the change, nor did she notice that more and more often Mingyu stayed the night at your house. In her mind, Uncle Googoo was always welcome. It was as natural as breathing.
Maybe it was because you were still doing all of the same things you always did – you’d just added a few. Mingyu had always fit so seamlessly into your life. The two of you were happy, Sara was content, your friends were thrilled – Bora and Wonwoo especially, although Chan also took partial credit – and everything seemed perfect.
And then something shifted, just a tad. It was about a month after you became official. Mingyu spent a bit of time every night searching things up on his laptop. Occasionally, he spent a few minutes outside on the phone, never giving a direct answer when you asked who he’d been talking to.
He never acted off – he was still as affectionate (and insatiable for your body) as ever, so you weren’t nervous he was seeing someone else. Your first concern was that he was shopping for wedding rings. As smitten as you were with him, you worried that was a bit soon for two people who’d only been dating a month (although, admittedly, you’d already filled up a Pinterest board with ideas for the eventual wedding you hoped for). But then, after about two weeks, one of the phone calls comes while Mingyu is making dinner and you’re upstairs in Sara’s room trying to locate her hairbrush, and he can’t suppress a whoop of excitement.
“I need you,” he calls, and you respond by jogging down the stairs with concerned eyes.
“What’s wrong, love?”
“Nothing, I just have some news.” He carefully removes the pan from the stove and comes over to you, pulling you into his arms.
“What is it?” you ask, your hand coming up to touch his cheek.
“They caught him,” he says simply.
“Who, baby?” you ask, confused.
“The guy who hit your sister’s car,” he explains.
Your jaw drops. “What?”
“I’ve been working on it,” he admits. “I have some friends on the force, and a couple of informants leftover from my days as an agent. Someone knew someone who knew the car, and they knew the person who used to drive the car, and it turns out that the parking lot where it was abandoned had security cameras. He’s right there on camera, literally fifteen minutes after the accident. They arrested him two hours ago.”
You are speechless. Mingyu lifts you into his arms, and you bury your face in his neck. “Oh, thank you,” you say through tears when you can finally speak. “So that’s what you’ve been up to.”
“What did you think I was doing?” he asks.
“I literally thought you were looking at wedding rings.”
He laughs. “No,” he says. “Not yet.”
You hear the promise in his voice and know that the future is going to be better than you ever imagined – just like the present is.

Revival Ch. 1
Tumblr media
You hold your breath as you hear the engine of the Harley Davidson come to a stop. You were always on edge before you heard his familiar footsteps walking up towards your shared home. Even still if you didn’t hear the keys jingle you would still be on edge.
Today was special. It was Manny’s birthday and like typical he was late even for his own celebration. “Daddy!” Your 6 year old daughter Aurelia screams as she sees Manny walk through the door.
He smiled wide as he looked at his kid bouncing up and down in her seat waiting for him to fully be in the house. “Hi baby girl!”
“Hi daddy!” She would sing as she walked up to him he picked her up and placed a kiss on each of her cheeks and forehead as she giggled. No one could tell her she didn’t have the best dad in the world. It warmed your heart.
When he turned to face you he tensed up, expecting you to go off on him like you did so many other times before. But all you have to offer is a simple “Hey” from the other side of the kitchen counter. He sighed, placing Aurelia or ‘Lia’ for short on the ground and making his way to the bedroom to shower. That was the routine. Every time he returned no matter how long he was gone, he would love on Lia and go change clothes or shower not wanting any more contaminants entering further into his house. You would then place his old stinky boots (as Lia would describe) on the back porch and put fresh ones by the door along with a change of clothes in case he had to leave the house quickly.
As the water splashed on his body all Manny could think of was the fatal flaw that created this tension between you two. You found him in one of the brothels in a neighboring town. Apparently it was one of Vickis’ girls who you found on top of him riding him like her life depended on it. From there on things have been a blur. You disappeared going to your relatives' homes in Tijuana, that was the hardest week he ever had to endure, when you returned you demanded he leave your home, which he did. He vowed to make it up to you and he meant it. The ring you threw at him at the brothel. He saved and just last month you agreed to put it back on. There was hope after all. But this silent treatment thing that you were doing ever since that night at the brothel, he hated it. He would rather you two had a screaming match than for you to simply be silent.
Your daughter doesn’t wait for him to make his way back to the living room, instead she runs and jumps in his arms as soon as she hears his house shoes sliding across the floor.
“You been a good girl baby?” “Yes!” Lia smiled showing her missing tooth
“What did you learn in school today?” She would gesticulate counting on her hands “Today we watched a movie and we colored and we did numbers”
“Wow!” he said as he reached the dining table
You smiled as you plated the food “Lia can you come help me please?”
“Yes mommy”
You smiled as she skipped her way to you and grabbed her plate as you carried the other two.
“Thanks!”  Manny would say to you as he looked up at you
You avoided eye contact “welcome!”
“Daddy,” Lia called to him wanting his full attention
“Yes baby girl” “A man came to fix the house today!”  You loved your daughter you really did, but she was such a tattletale
Almost immediately he turned to face you “Oh really?”  you could hear the irritation seep through his voice
“Uh huh mommy said he came to fix the house!”
“What did he fix mommy?” Manny asked you
You briefly looked up at him “The AC, it broke” You turn your attention to Lia  “remember it was really hot this afternoon Lia?” “Yes! I was sweating, mommy was sweating even the man was sweating!”
You focus your attention on your plate not wanting to look up to meet his eyes, because if there was one thing Manny didn’t like, it is strangers in his home
He chuckled “okay baby girl glad it’s not so hot any more”
“Yea!” she would move on from the topic and go on about what she learned in school this week since he had been gone for a few days
After dinner you and Lia disappeared into a backroom before coming back
“Daddy you have to close your eyes!”
He chuckled “Why?” “It's a surprise!”  She giggled. He would do anything Aurelia asked of him, so of course he would close his eyes with a smile on his face. “Open them daddy!”  As he opened his eyes Lia screamed  “HAPPY BIRTHDAY!” while throwing confetti up in the air filling the room with sprinkles and glitter.
Manny immediately picked her up “All this for me?”
“UH HUH! IT IS YOUR BIRTHDAY DADDY! DID YOU FORGET!?”
“I think I did I’m an old man” he joked
“I remembered! Mommy too! She remembered!”
He smiled. “Thank you baby girl I love it!” “Here we got you this”  you say handing him the bag filled with gifts
“You got this for me too!” he asked as he sat Lia on his lap She giggled, hiding her smile behind her hands  “YES!”
“Oh man! I’m a lucky dad huh?” “Uh huh! Open it!” He reached in and pulled out an oddly painted mug. “I painted it for you in class”
“Aww thank you baby girl I love it” he placed a kiss on your cheek
He reached in and pulled out another box when he opened it, it was filled with pictures of him and Aurelia,  from past events. “Oh man,”  he felt emotional as he looked at the pictures “I love it baby girl!” he said wiping the tear from his eye
“Mommy helped me with this one!” She laughed and pointed to a picture where they were laughing with paint on them. “Remember that day!” He chuckled “Yea I do baby.” When he looked up at you, you offered a tight lipped smile in return. As he observed the pictures he realized many of them were missing you. You had cropped yourself out.
“You got one more present daddy” Lia said reaching into the bag
“Oh really men you really want me spoiled rotten huh?”
Lia beamed “Yes just like me!” He pulled out another box, this time it was filled with a watch and gun holster that he had mentioned months ago that he wanted to get but just never got around to it.
“Aww thank you baby”
“You’re welcome!” Lia turned to look at you “can we eat cake now mommy?” eager for dessert
You smile “Yea let me bring it to the table”
Lia bounced on his lap  “Mommy and I made cake for you!” “You also baked me a cake too!?”
“Yes!”
“Oh that's just too much!” he would tease “How am I going to make it up to you?”
Lia flung her hands around his neck “It’s because we love you daddy” He hugged her back “I love you guys too, so much”
“You wanna sing happy birthday to daddy Lia?” you ask as you place the cake on the table “Yes mommy!”
“Happy birthday to you,”  you started the song and Lia jumped in “Happy birthday to yyyooouuuuu”  Lia would hold the note longer than you which made both you and Manny laugh
“Thank you baby girl” “You have to make a wish daddy!” Lia insisted
“Okay I will baby” Manny closed his eyes and blew out the candle, all he wished for was his family to be whole again.
You smiled as you cut the cake giving him a slice of the marble cake (his favorite) without icing he was never a fan of icing.
“Is it yummy daddy?” Lia asked as she licked the icing from her fingers
“Yes it is! I love it! Thank you baby girl,” he leaned over and kissed her cheek. He looked up at you “thank you mommy”
You smiled at him “You’re welcome!”
Lia would stay up just a little longer before you convinced her to go to sleep because tomorrow she was going to the beach with her cousins. As always whenever Manny would be around she would insist on him tucking her in and reading a bedtime story.
“She’s out for the night”
You chuckled to yourself like father like daughter all it took was their head hitting the pillow before they were out cold
“What’s funny?” he asks you
“Nothing” you said walking around him with dishes in your hand.
“So...”  he would start with your back to him and you felt your stomach drop “thanks for the watch and holster”
You relaxed a little because at least he wasn’t grilling you about the AC being fixed. “Yea like I said you’re welcome”
You hear him smack his lips and you didn’t turn around like you normally would to ask him what that was about.
“Why did you crop yourself out of the pictures?”
You turn to look at him briefly “It was a daddy daughter gift Manny”
You turn back around to put the dishes in the dishwasher “It was a gift from both of you”  you hear as he moves closer “I wanna be able to look at it and remember all of us”
You shrug “Well shit happens”
He smacks his lips again “Why you acting like this? Its been long enough I have done everything you wanted me to!”
You sigh and look out the window, catching his reflection on the window. “Manny I don’t want to argue its your birthday”
He licks his lips while looking back at you “Then don’t” he pushes himself against you making sure you feel his hard dick. “Let me make you feel good. Let me make us feel good” he moves the hair from your neck and places kisses
You hated the effect this man had on you and he knew it. Which made it worse. “Manny” you call to him in a stern voice
He hummed at the sound of his name leaving your lips, attention still on your neck “I miss you Y/N, it’s been too long” he whines
You giggle “It hasn’t even been 4 months” you swallow hard as he drags his hands against your waist towards the front and down your thighs. You curse at yourself for wearing such a short spaghetti strap dress, or maybe you wore it just for this to happen. You did miss him after all
He grips your thighs rocking into you “It’s too fucking long, you know ever since I got out of prison it’s been you!”
You scoff “Yea until rec...”
He interrupted you by pulling you flush against him  “It was one time Y/N!”
“One time too many Manny!” You push against him for him to give you space
“Just tell me what you want from me I miss my family” “Should have thought of that when you were busy balls deep in some bitches pussy”
He groans and takes a few steps back giving you space “I told you it was for a sting!”
You turn to glare at him “What sting has you fucking other women?”
“Don’t start this shit Y/N!” he warns not wanting to have this argument yet again “Okay!”  You throw your hands up “it is your birthday after all, why don’t you drink something” you hand him a beer from the fridge
He begrudgingly grabbed the beer from your hand but paused looking down at your empty left hand.
Taking a sip he tilts his head “What you do today?” You shrug “Work”  you were a tattoo artist and that's how you two met he came in for a tattoo
“After that?” he asked eyes not leaving your hand “Got Lia, I came home the AC was out and I called the guy to come fix it”
“Who’s the guy”
You shrug “Some guy I found online, then I cooked and the rest is history”
He raised his brow “That's all you did?”
“Yes!” you give him a look wondering why he was questioning you
“So where is your ring?”  the vein on his forehead starting to make itself known. A sign that he was angry.
You looked down at your hand “it’s around” you shrug
“What the fuck is that supposed to mean Y/N?” “That it is  around, duh!”  This was a dangerous game you were playing with Manny. The man was prone to getting irrationally angry in the blink of an eye.
You feel yourself being yanked back as he grabs you and pulls you towards him “Y/N! I’m not fucking joking around!” You push at his chest to get away from him “Get your hands off me first of all and I said it was around”
He doesn’t budge at your pushing instead grabs tighter “Why’d you take it off?”
“Because I can!” you manage to maneuver out of his grip
“So who did you really have up in my house Y/N?”
You chuckle sarcastically “This isn't your house Manny! Remember? Or did you forget you were swimming in another woman’s pussy?”
He took a deep breath and through gritted teeth he said “Answer the fucking question Y/N” you stare at him in response. He takes a step towards you in a threatening manner  “you must want me to fuck you up” You roll your eyes and wave him off “Can’t hurt any more than what you’ve done”
He grabs your hand “Y/N” he calls you in a threatening tone You stare at him for a moment and burst out in laughter “Can you relax?” this was comical to you “it's here!” you chuckle as you pull the necklace from your cleavage showing your ring swinging.
Before you could register what happened the necklace was yanked and snapped from your neck and you watch as Manny removes the ring and angrily shoves it back on your finger “Don’t fucking play with me Y/N.” You smile at him “Sheesh calm down! I had it all along and you owe me a necklace” you place your right hand on his shoulder With a mean mug he says “Don’t take that shit out no more!”
“Okay! Calm down!” you rub his shoulder “I’m serious Y/N”
You roll your eyes “I know! I can tell ! You’re no fun!”
He sighed “I’m trying to fix this shit and you walking around town without your ring?”
You cross your arms “It was literally for one day and stop having your minions spy on me!”
“I wouldn’t have to if you stopped pulling shit like this!”
“It sucks huh?”  you laugh as you walk away. You have to admit you were being petty but you were going to milk this as long as you could.

Description//: In which Rio was your father’s close friend, until your father was locked up and in order to pay him back for taking a wrap for him, he sets out to take you in after your fathers arrest.
————————————
He nodded his head. “Yeah, remember I used to be in your father’s gym all the time. So, when she would come, I would see her. But, let’s get going though. We have a long day ahead of us and I wanna get us breakfast.” You nod, following him out the house. He tossed you the keys. “You’re driving.” You smiled, rushing around to the driver side door of his black g-wagon. Backing out the driveway, you followed his directions. “Where we headed?”
“Same diner we ate at yesterday then from there, you and me gonna have a little workout.” You chuckled. “Work out?”
He nods his head. “Workout.” He repeated back to you. You were curious as to what he’d meant, You were not about to do anything crazy, You both entered the diner. He ordered what he wanted and you ordered what you wanted. You smiled as they brought out two big stacks of pancakes with syrup and butter and some eggs and bacon to the side. “Coffee, please.” You smiled up at the waitress. He raised an eyebrow at you. “Coffee?” You nod your head. “I don’t really like it, it’s just something I did with my dad and whenever I miss him, I crave it.” You answered him. He sat with his back against the wall his feet propped up and arm around the top of the booth, his eyes scanning the diner. “You not gonna eat?” You asked him
“I’m about to.” He leans forward looking down at his phone then at you. “You say you like your school, what child in their right mind likes school?”
You laugh. “I do. I mean, I’m a nerd. I love school, I just love to learn new things.” You shrug your shoulders. Rio dipped his fries into ketchup. “Steak and fries for breakfast?” He nodded his head, Rio wasn’t much of a morning breakfast kind of guy, although he liked the occasional waffle. He found himself wanting steak and fries this morning, him being a regular and this place being one of his money laundering businesses, he got what he wanted. “Perfect meal for the day.” He cut into his steak after applying steak sauce. Your mouth watered at the delicious sight of the well-done steak. You didn’t see how people ate their steak uncooked, it was just nasty.
“You want some?”
You shook your head no, biting into your pancake stacks that were on your fork. You smiled. “I’m good, thanks though.” He nods his head. He knew he was about to work this steak off so he wasn’t too worried. He still couldn’t believe how much you’d grown, he always knew that you would turn out to be a beautiful and respectful young lady, and you turned out just like he thought. At the moment, he didn’t think much of his attraction to you because at the moment, you was like his niece and his friends kid. “When the last time you talked to your dad?”
“Last time we talked was the day they hauled him away in handcuffs. I mean he tried to call a few times, but, I haven’t seen or spoken to him since.”
Rio rubbed the side of his face. “Why you so hard on him? It was self defense.” You tapped the butt-end of your fork on the table, looking at Rio. Shaking you head, you rolled your eyes. “That’s what he says and wants me to believe. But I saw the photos. That man was beaten to a pulp. I’ve seen my dad beating someone in self defense. That’s not it. He beat that man with more than just his fist.” You we’re adamant on your belief. You loved your father, you wanted to believe in his innocence. “And I looked into his eyes, he lied to my face about what happened.” You pushed your food to the side.
“Can we not talk about him?”
Rio licked his lips. “No, mama. Because obviously there’s something you’re missing and clearly you got some anger towards your father. Does it matter what he did? He did what he had to do. He’s still your father.” You shook your head. “My father left me alone out here. He made a decision that gave him life in prison without the possibility of parole, he made me another stereotype. A black girl in a rich school whose father is locked up. Every day I go to school, kids pull at my hair, calling me all kinds of names. Calling me the seed of a murderer. Do you not know the humility I face every day?”
“And you think this decision was easy on him?”
You shook your head. “Rio.. you don’t get it. You want me to forgive him because you’re in the same line of work, and you want me to be forgiving of you if you choose a path that lands you in prison. Well, sorry to tell you but you wouldn’t matter to me. I appreciate you for helping me and all you’re doing but, if you went down.. there wouldn’t be a need to forgive you.” Rio shook his head. “You say that now. But I’m not saying what I’m saying for that. I have a son. Every day I’m out here doing what I do, is another day I’m missing out on being the father he deserves. Disappointing him. Disappearing every year. I barely see my kid. But my son knows that I love him, and if anything g were to happen to him- I would be the one handling shit.” He spoke stern. “You need to forgive your father because god forbid something happens to him in there, you wouldn’t forgive yourself. Your father is a good man. He’s no cold blooded murderer, don’t let the world change your views on him.”
You sighed. “So you have a heart now?”
“I never said I didn’t have one. I took you in, didn’t I?” You shook your head. Rio chuckled lightly, he sat up straight with his feet back on the ground. He looked at you, his hands joined together. “I’ve done some shit in my day. Shit I’m not proud of, things I do regret but at the same time that I don’t regret. I’m a bad man, a bad person.. but, I also have heart. But your dad? He’s a good man, he’s as good as it gets, Y/n.” You nod your head and sighed deeply, moving your braids behind your shoulder. “So, you ready to go to our next destination?” You nod your head.
Your eyes settled full of water. You stood outside your father’s gym that once was covered in crime scene tape and had a big foreclosure sign on the door, was now surrounded with new paint, some cars, and the tape was no longer there. “Rio?” Your voice croaked. He turned his head. “I bought it. It’s in your name now so it’s yours. It won’t ever be taken from you or your father again. I even upgraded a few things.” You were in awe. He was so different from his demeanor or his appearance. He was so sweet. “Let’s get inside and get to the business.” You followed Rio inside, looking around at all he had done with the place.
Tumblr media
“It looks so good in here.” You complimented his handy work
Rio nods. “Appreciate it. Why don’t you change into some thing more suitable.” Disappearing into the locker room, you gather everything you needed, you dressed in some shorts and a sports bra. Although it was a little too exposing for your liking, it was all right with you. You pulled your hair up into a high ponytail just as a man came in the room, you jumped. “Knock!” He held his hand up. “My bad, I’m sorry.” He smiled, backing out the room. You smiled slightly because he was kind of cute. You shook yourself out of your thoughts, walking out the room, seeing the guy from earlier. He smiled in your direction as he walks over to you. “Hey, I’m really sorry about that. I didn’t even know that anyone was in there.”
Tumblr media
“It’s ok, maybe knock next time.” You grabbed some gloves.
He looked around the gym. “You new here? I’ve never seen you around here before.” You fumbled with your fingers hoping someone would rescue you. “I-uh, I haven’t been here since it reopened,” you looked from your gloves as you nervously place your hands inside and brought your eyes to his perfectly designed abs and pecs, to his face. “Ah, well, I’m-” before he could introduce himself, Rio yells for you as he entered the ring. “Y/n, let’s go! We don’t have all day mama.”
“Oh, you with Rio?” He slightly stepped back.
You nod. “Uh yeah.. he’s a friend.” The guy nodded his head. “Oh okay. Well, I’ll let you get to that and I’ll see you around?” You nod your head starting to walk towards the ring, turning to speak to him one last time but he’d scattered off to the punching bag in the corner. “Distractions will get you hurt in this business.” Rio said to you as he stood at the door. “What business?” He shook his head. “Let’s go.”
“Fine. I’m fighting you?”
Tumblr media
He nods his head. “Yep. I wanna see how much of your skills you remember.”
“Okay.” You shrugged. You two started boxing, he swung but you dodged it punching him in the face with a right hook. He shook his head bouncing a little. “Good, good. But that’s just first luck. Don’t be cute. Pretend I’m those people at school that pick on you. Don’t let up on me.”
Tumblr media
You squelched. “Oh my! Rio! I’m so sorry.” You held your face as he sat there with a face full of blood, wiping the blood from his lips and nose. He coughed spitting the blood on the mat. “It’s all right. I told you, don’t go easy on me. What you apologizing for?” He laughed like a maniac, you were taken back. You had just almost beat this man face in and he’s laughing like it didn’t phase him. “I just almost beat your face in and you’re laughing?”
“Girl, you gotta do better then this to scare me. You did good. I’m proud of you.”
You raised an eyebrow as he stood to his feet. “Careful. You could have a concussion.” He smiled, looking down at you as you held him up, his ribs bruised from the constant punches and kicks you gave him. “You know, you got skills.” He smiled down at you. “Skills?” He nods. “Yeah, you ever thought of boxing professionally?”
“Mm, no. This is just something I do with my dad. It’s not something I see myself doing full time. It helps me blow off steam.”
He nods wrapping his arm around you. It was only the two of you now, as much as everyone wanted to continue watching Rio, who was never beat in the ring- get his ass beat more, he didn’t allow it. It was just the two of you, tussling and fighting on the mat. You felt alive again. You felt in control again. He sat down on the bench, looking up at you, you sat next to him. “Thank you.”
“For what?” He looked over at you. “All of this.”
He shrugged. “You welcome. You don’t have to thank me for doing what’s right.” You smile, nodding your head. He looked at you, his thumb brushed against the busted lip he gave you and the glowing shiner. “I at least got a good couple punches in.” You laugh. “Yeah but how am I supposed to go to school tomorrow like this?”
“Mm, we will think about that when the time comes.”

“Oh my god.” For the second time tonight, you came on Rio’s tongue. He kisses your thighs, running his hands up and down your sides.
“Nah,” Rio laughs. “Not God, just me.” He jokes happily before kissing your clit, and chuckling at the way your hips jerks in response. “Need a minute?”
You nod and sigh, burying yourself into the pillows. Rio rises to his knees, “I got something I need to show you.”
“Mhmm,” you hum and nod your head, blinking your eyes to focus. His eyes stay on yours and he tugs his black shirt over his head. Your eyes find the new ink before he can even point it out. Your name, in small capitalized letters across the left side of his chest—over his heart.
You reach out and trace the small black ink with your fingers, entranced. “When did you get this?”
Rio shrugs and gives no more for an answer. He lowers himself to rest on his elbows, hovering above you. “You like it?” It’s a loaded question. You can see the anxiety behind the hard look on his face.
You don’t answer his question, only tug him down to kiss you. You press your lips against his and hope he can feel the love behind it, a kiss with no intention other than to share it with him.
Rio feels it in his chest, the way you wrap yourself around him in an embrace. The kiss turns to short pecks that turn back to lingering kisses. Your hands tug at his jeans and boxers. He doesn’t make you wait long before his pants and boxers are gone, bringing you back into his arms.
Rio teases you with the head of his cock, spreading your wetness over it. “You ready for me?” His voice sends a shiver down your spine and you nod, bringing him back into a kiss. Rio pulls away a bit, just enough to see your face as hips meet yours.
A smug smile tugs on his cheeks as you gasp and immediately wrap your legs tightly around his body. Rio rocks his hips back and forth, slowly pushing his full length. Your eyes roll back and you feel his lips against your neck. Rio chuckles, “Feeling good there, ma?”

Today was the big day – your birthday had approached faster than you could process, the days ticked by faster than you could blink, and if Bucky’s reaction (not to mention the whole group’s), today was not going to pass by without a fuss.
You had been ordered, via text, to arrive at the shop at seven o’clock sharp – which was after the doors closed and the shop would be empty.
Which it was. Quite literally.
The windows were dark, lights long turned off, and there wasn’t a car in sight.
“The fuck?” You mumbled, stepping out from your car with a slight frown, the slight breeze kissing your skin and making an array of goosebumps to rise. It was a little disheartening, if you were honest – arriving on the dot to see no one there? Nerves simmered in your stomach.
Swallowing the sudden lump in your throat, you stepped up on the sidewalk and crossed to the door – only, there was a piece of paper taped to the door.
‘To our Sunshine, our Sunny – the love of our lives and the light of our days, open the door, and come inside.’
“That’s not creepy at all,” you whispered, chuckling. “Alright, I’ll bite.”
The door opened with a quiet squeak, but the lights didn’t turn on once you stepped over the threshold. Seconds ticked by as you stood in the darkened shop, and your apprehension only grew – what the hell was going on? “Guys–Buck? Hello?”
A lot of things happened, all at once.
The lights flickered on to reveal streamers and banners, balloons and confetti, covering the entirety of the shop – music suddenly blasted from the speakers along the ceiling, and there, right in front of you, stood everyone.
Smiles blinding, eyes bright, and arms wide. “Happy fucking birthday, Sunshine!”
“Oh my god!” You yelled, your hands flying to your open mouth. Shock rooted you in place and you watched, awestruck, while Bucky rushed forward with the others following close behind. “Guys! I thought–”
“We would never forget about our Sunny,” Steve laughed, pulling you into a bear hug. Your arms wrapped around him just before he was pulled away by Nat.
“Like we ever would,” she chimed in, pulling you into her side, wide smirk on her blood red lips.
Peter rushed forward next, a grin of childish glee on his face. “Hell no, Sunshine! C’mere.” You were pulled into a crushing hug, and you laughed, hugging him back with just as much enthusiasm.
“Alright, alright, that’s enough,” Bucky called, pulling Peter off you. “I would like to wish my girl a happy birthday, can the lot of you fuck off?”
Everyone cleared out to the back room with orders to not take forever, and you were left alone with Bucky who didn’t waste a second on pulling you close. “Today’s the day, huh, baby?”
“Mhm.” You nodded into his chest, revelling in his tight embrace. “It is.”
“That means I gotta say happy birthday then,” Bucky said lowly, pulling you back. You grinned and met him halfway for a deep kiss, pouring all of your gratitude and love into it.
When Bucky finally pulled back, he rested his forehead on yours, and he smiled softly as he gently swayed the both of you side to side. “Happy birthday, sweetheart–there aren’t any words that even cover just how lucky a fella like me is, to have you.”
“You big sap,” you replied, and Bucky laughed, shaking his head.
“But you love it.”
And you did.

“What do you not understand?” Rio’s voice was hard and his eyes were wild. “You go out, you call me. You see a movie, I wanna know where and when because you won’t be going alone. You want to go shopping? I’ll bring the mall to you. You want food? I’ll hire a chef. You are my responsibility.”
“I’m a person, Rio, not a child. I don’t need a constant bodyguard to go buy a new pair of shoes!”
“Yes you do!”
“I need some space!”
Rio falls quiet for a second before he chuckles, a mocking smile on his face. “You think this is a game? You’re my girl. The whole world knows that shit, and I’d never let them forget that.”
You roll your eyes and huff, turning away and storming to the kitchen. “Whatever, you don’t even care.”
Rio follows closely behind you. “I don’t? Everything I do is because I care about you!” This time he sighs and shuts his eyes, collecting himself. He chooses to think about you in his favorite moments, anything but fighting.
While he takes his own moment to himself, you pour yourself a glass of whiskey and toss it back before pouring another. When Rio finally opens his eyes again, he looks tired. “Mama, I have to keep you safe.”
“By sending me off with my own secret servicemen every time I leave this house? I just wanted to pick up some fucking shoes for Marcus. I would’ve been back in an hour!” “A lot can happen in an hour,” is all he says.
“I just need to get his shoes, and you’re not going to stop me from going out.”
“I’m not stopping you,” he shrugs. “You just need to call me so I can send someone over to go with you.”
“I’m not a child and I don’t like to be treated like one.”
“And I’m your husband, and I’d like it to stay that way.” Rio sighs again, moving to lean against the counter and look down at you. “I can’t lose you, Mama, not you.”
Your voice is much quieter this time, “I’m not going anywhere.”
“I can’t take that chance.”
You look up at him, still annoyed. “I don’t want anyone else, Rio, all this isn’t necessary.”
“It’s not you I’m worried about,” he finally admits after a pause of silence. “I know how to make you happy, what you like to eat when you’re sad and when you want me to yourself,”  the corner of Rio’s mouth tip upwards before falling again. “But you’ll never be safe, being with me.”
“Rio,” you sigh softly.
“I won’t lose you.” Rio shakes his head, banishing the idea out of her head. “And I’ll do what I need to do to make sure I don’t.”
