Saw someone say that manatees are mostly muscle, so I had to draw a buff mermaid. Her tail and coloring are based off a dugong, not a manatee, but...

Do you think Mermaids exist in KOTLC?
They do exist and are mentioned in canon! When Sophie is searching through Edaline's trunks in Everblaze looking for Jolie's stuff, she comes across some of her journals and says:
"A quick flip through the pages told Sophie there were probably some interesting stories in there--the words 'monitoring the mermaid migration' particularly caught her attention" (p. 264).
So they exist, but appear to be more animalistic than humanoid. Like she does with selkies and banshees and dragons, adapting them into her own creatures. Hope that helps!

Some mermaid doodles. The manatee girl on the right definitely got more artistic love, but I'm so attached to the idea of a ray mermaid like the ones on the left

Mermay Day 4: Manatee
Most of my stories from the Rescue center end happily enough. We find the merm, or it's brought to us, it gets better, then we release it back to where it was found. Edie's case was a little more complicated. She was a Grey River Grazer, cut up by a mishandled net, and very pregnant. It was a race to get her better so her baby could be born in the right environment. I still see her and her daughter Marilyn swimming out by the rivers. Such gentle beasts. One of the first merm species ever documented. I wonder if she remembers me as much as I remember her.
[Prompt List]
[Previous] - Day 3: Betta Fish
[Next] - Day 5: Freshwater Crocodile

Presenting this year's annual MerMay commission for Merman Tristan, the @redrivermerman on Instagram!
This marks the fifth year in a row that I've worked with Merman Tristan on a portrait of his mersona. Not only do I look forward to collaborating with him each year—he's an incredibly friendly merman, you see—these annual portraits also present an excellent opportunity for me to look at the work I've done in years past to see how my artistic abilities have improved or evolved over time. I have to say, I'm quite satisfied with how this year's portrait turned out—here's looking forward to next year's! 🧜‍♂️🥂

Nani's race matters cause it directly affects her story

My favorite thing is the men in charge of discovering ‘new’ worlds were all complete idiots
They thought manatees were ugly mermaids and often confused whale schlong for sea monsters

manachana
based on manatees and tlanchanas (metepec sirens), the word tlanchana comes from nahuatl and is formed of other 3 words: atl which means water, tonan which means mother and, chane which means spirit. similar to european mermaids tlanchana was the queen of the sea, half human half fish (although she could shapeshift which kind of fish it was and even turn it to legs). tlachana is still an important figure nowadays for people who live in the state of mexico and its not uncommon to see folk art made of clay of tlachana with tons of small decorations on her manachana is also a manatee because its believed stories of the spanish finding mermaids in the way to america might have been inspired by sights of manaties which also live in the area, they are sadly considered endangered.
