mauroar
mauroar is based on two different fossils found in mexico, first is mauriciosaurus, a very complete plesiosaur named mauriciosaurus, it was indeed a juvenile so its hard to know what its adult size would be but there are estimates
the other one is an indeterminate pliosaur known from remains so fragmentary it cant be asigned to a genus, its known as the aramberri monster and it became popular because a size estimate of 15 meters was made based on liopleurodon which would make it insanely big, but its also not very realistic
very interesting opposites for marine reptiles found in mexico

pristeeth and sawpactli
based on sawfish, specifically Pristis pectinata and Pristis pristis, they where a very important animal to the mexica who saw it as one of the representations of the primigenial creature from which the earth was made Cipactli, their rostrums have been found in "el templo mayor" and their nahuatl name was even acipactli (sea spiny/ spiny being). nowadays however sawfish in general are endangered and have been pushed out of their habitats, as usual by overfishing and pollution.

charrequiem
based on the legend of el charro negro, a mexican variation of the classic rider from hell stories. a rider, in this case a charro, makes a deal with the devil and after being unable to pay becomes one of its emissaries, the charro negro searches for people to force into making deals with the devil so they may take his place some day. one of the most interesting parts about some variations of the myth (for me) is that the horse is condemned alongside him for trying to protect him from the devil, a commonly mentioned detail is the glowing flame like eyes of his horse that can be seen from far away, which is why ive made them the protagonist for my version of the myth.

cricrimiqui
Francisco Gabilondo Soler, also known as cri-cri (cricket noise onomatopoeia) was a famous Mexican musician that made songs for children, he had a show that would play on the radio, his music became so famous in latin america that Disney offered to buy his characters (the answer was no of course) if you know some spanish id recommend a listen (altough some songs are very of his age)
Tumblr media
xoldier
xoloitzcuintles where considered sacred creatures back i nthe prehispanic ages, they where seen not only as guardians in life but also as guides in dead, they would be burried with their owners so that they could guide their souls trough Mictlan (the land of the dead) of course they would only do it if there where treated well in life
[source] (its in spanish)
chinamby
chinampas where a technology used by mesoamerican cultures to make arable bits of land in shallow lakes, this would be accomplished by creating structures similar to fences made of wood to make a sort of artificial islands, the mexica used this technique to a massive scale in what is sometimes called "floating gardens"

nyktrunk and dracuzotz
nyktrunk
based on Musonycteris harrisoni also known as the banana bat, its endemic to the south of mexico and considered endangered, its very small and feeds mainly on nectar and polen
Tumblr media
[source] [source 2]
dracuzotz
based on Desmodus draculae, a giant bat with a 80cm wing span that went extinct somewhere around the XIX century, its known from most of latin america and fed on blood, i made this version a speculative terrestrial bat as its based on a legend that might have been started by the presence of Desmodus draculae
camazotz was a deity of death and sacrifice adopted by many prehispanic cultures, the name is K'iche for kame=death and sotz=bat, it took the form of a humanoid bat and there where multiple cults formed around him
Tumblr media Tumblr media
[source]
petty sidenote: many sources included the one cited call camazotz "the mexican/aztec/mayan batman", this is stupid, they are nothing alike and im pretty sure they just say it to try and get people to read the article. I personally hate this so much i just had to mention it, please dont do that :,v

mammud
based on mammuthus columbi rather than the wooly mammuth, mammoths are quite common here in mexico and in fact theres a recent story of over 200 specimens that where found during the construction of an airport, the theory is that they got stuck on mud and died there, but i also took some inspo from la brea tar pits for the design

they grow so fast [first form] [second form]
momochilin (momoxtli means popcorn in nahuatl)
swidden farming or "slash and burn" is a technique where in order to create a patch of arable land people cut down the vegetation in the are and then burn it so that the remains can help the harvest grow, this technique is very important culturally but it also has some awful consequences to the environment so theres been a push to convince people to stop using it [source 1] [source 2]
since chapuleaf is also a corn he became one with the flames and now has become popcorn, which covers him like a shield, and his wings move at such speed that it can now make kernels pop just by placing them near its wings, its also inspired partially by a locust
ahuixolot
the ahuizotl is a creature from mexican mythology, a creature that lives under the water and uses its long tail with a hand on the end to drag people and drown them, some times its described as a "water dog" and others as an actual semiaquatic mammal that might have gone extinct
Tumblr media
xochilotl
Axolotls where once known to (and theres a small chance that they might still) inhabit the Xochimilco lake, a very popular lake in Mexico city, the main attraction is small boats known as trajineras used to travel trough the different canals of the region, this place also has quite a few chinampas and although its considered a natural reserve it faces a lot of problems with pollution due to being a popular location for tourists to visit

mayaviate
named after the mayate (Cotinis mutabilis, fig beetle) a relatively large beetle reaching 3.4 cm in body lenght, they are too large to move with their little legs so they use their wings to fly around. In the past people would play with them by tying a little thread to their legs or head and throwing them in the air so they would fly like "little planes", although some argue this made people take care of them its still a pretty cruel way of treating the animal that could lead to losing a limb or dying so it become elss common and shouldnt be done

xicalampros and vacuudon
xicalcoatl was said to be a black and very shiny snake, so i based them on Lampropeltis getula nigrita (altough iNaturalist says its now Lampropeltis splendida ssp. nigrita ) also known as the mexican kingsnake, endemic to Mexico and the US, they have no venom as they mainly feed on other snakes and smaller animals by constricting them (remember that) because of this they tend to be kept as pets. although i gave them yellow scales like other Lampropeltis species have these kingsnakes dont have them, and even have a bit of a blue reflection instead.

xohuiwing has turned into a whale shark, some of the largest sharks in the world named after whales because it filter feeds like them, its considered as endangered in mexico and there are even protected ares for them in the south of the country. swiming with them is a popular hobby for tourist and people even have dates and locations marked to do this, this can become a problem when unauthorized people try to do it which could result in harm for either the whales or the people swimming

gilil and chacaltetepon
based on the gila monster and the beaded lizard (known in spanish as lagarto de chaquira and in nahuatl as acaltetepon). they are some of the only known reptiles with venom, they are also known for the scale and color patterns on their body similar to beads, theres many myths and stories surounding them becaus of their venom and their incredibly painful bite, however there are no known human deaths because of it and they rely more on their size and strenght to take down prey only using the venom to escape larger predators. They are experts in raiding burrows and nests and are actually quite slow moving but capable of climbing cacti to reach their prey
the patterns on chacaltetepon are meant to very loosely reference Huichol art, an indigenous group from mexico that are specially known for their beaded art with colorful patterns and shapes but im not confident in trying to even slightly replicate it because every bit of it has a special meaning related to their cosmology of which i know nothing about.
