Stars Live Preview: 4/13, Lincoln Hall, Chicago
Tumblr media
BY JORDAN MAINZER
Like for many bands, the past few years have thrown a wrench in Stars’ plans. Yes, the Canadian indie rockers had planned to record their most recent album, last year’s very good From Capelton Hill (Last Gang), live with everyone in a single room in early 2020. (Of course, that didn’t happen.) The band also postponed tour dates last fall for mental health reasons, only the second time they purportedly had to do so for any reason in their 20+ year career. Well, the hardworking sextet--who have found a rejuvenated relationship with their fans through Patreon--are finally coming back to town. Tonight at Lincoln Hall, they’ll celebrate their career, playing from Capelton Hill and beloved records like Set Yourself On Fire and Heart.
A week from Friday, the band is also releasing a deluxe version of From Capelton Hill with remixes of five of its tracks from an impressive variety of artists. Death Cab For Cutie’s Benjamin Gibbard provides a bopping, yet atmospheric turn to album closer “Snowy Owl”, while excellent indie punk band Illuminati Hotties chop up “Pretenders” into a skittering hyperpop thump, albeit one that unexpectedly changes tempo two-thirds through. New Zealand alt-pop band Yumi Zouma turn "Back To The End” into a dark, propulsive club track, as do London’s Real Lies with “Build A Fire”. Perhaps the most impressive remix is by multi-instrumentalist and composer (and SILY favorite) Joseph Shabason, who adds his saxophone, synth, and guitars to and strips the vocals from “If I Never See London Again”. It’s the rare remix that actually takes a dance-oriented track and makes it more abstract and textured.
Opening for Stars is Toronto R&B/soul artist Lydia Persaud. Doors at 7:00 PM, show at 8. Tickets still available at time of publishing.

BIOGRAPHY
They were raised by a single mother and her own family. For the most part, their life was as normal as could be until the age of five when Sofia decided they were interested in acting as well as dance. Thus their career began. Living in Los Angeles, it wasn’t unheard of that parents would take their children in to different studios for auditions and Sofia was much of the same.
Although their career was slow to start, mostly background roles in television shows, eventually they stuck some bigger roles. Sofia became a regular on a popular children’s channel show until eventually they were given their own show and only gained in popularity.
Family was always important to Sofia. Their mom, being a single mother, worked hard to keep them happy and for it Sofia has always been grateful. It took a village of people to raise them. And since their dad had never been in the picture, Sofia has never really been curious about him. For the most part their grandmother and barrage of aunts and uncles helped keep the family together and stepped up with Sofia’s mother was stressed.
Speaking of Sofia’s mother, she is a lawyer, so between dropping her kid off at auditions and rehearsals, she’s often tired. But Sofia never minded because getting to spend any time with their mom was important enough. Their relationship has always been a close one and Sofia’s mother is their number one supporter.
School was always been something that Sofia has tried to put an effort into. The subjects that they were interested in were all over the place, from maths to the arts. They were mostly taught by private tutors on set, but also eventually went to a private school as well as being raised in a Jewish household (meaning they got a Jewish education as well).
Upon turning twenty, the network they signed with officially cancelled their show and for a while, Sofia was not sure what to do. They had contemplated looking for another job, but in the end did some traveling for a couple of months and then applied to a couple of colleges.
Sofia ended up moving to Roswell and is a full time student online. They choose Roswell to get away from the bustle of city life and have always been interested in living in the desert.
TLDR: former child star who moved to Roswell recently to get away from the bustle of Los Angeles and get a degree in Geology.
WANTED CONNECTIONS (forgive me I’m bad at these kinds of connections)

Someone to show them around town
Someone that’s trying to use their fame

LVV herdenkt 120-jarig bestaan met exhibitie
Tumblr media
Read the full article

(▶︎ Imposter Syndrome | Barbra Licaから)
Imposter Syndrome by Barbra Lica
n a world where almost everyone appears to have their public image and hashtags in order, “Imposter Syndrome” explores instead an identity still in flux. Equal parts playful and sombre, these songs flip unapologetically between genres, tempos, and production styles in search of what it means to be a flawed human with big dreams, bigger feelings, and a verifiably awkward social presence… With this newest EP, JUNO-nominated singer-songwriter-producer Barbra Lica presents her most brutally honest music to date, combining elements of Folk, RnB, Indie Pop, Jazz, and Existential Synth (not a real genre). Recorded almost entirely in home studios and cobbled together instrument by instrument, “Imposter Syndrome” represents a two-year production collaboration with some of Toronto’s most accomplished artists including James Bryan (Prozzäk, Philosopher Kings), Nicolas Tateishi (Sam Drysdale, Joanna Majoko), Christine Bougie (Bahamas, Lydia Persaud), Drew Jurecka (Dua Lipa, Jully Black), and Joel Visentin ("This American Life"). With her light-hearted dance number dedicated to girl nerdom (“Girls Like Me”), her reverie to utter defeat ("The Ghost of Me"), her gentle musings on empathy (“Take Care of You”), and her Randy Newman-esque ode to aging women (“Sour Women”), Barbra takes listeners on a rollercoaster ride of emotions and soundscapes.クレジット2022年10月7日リリース Written by: Track 1: Barbra Lica Track 2: Barbra Lica & Danielle Knibbe Track 3: Barbra Lica & James Bryan Track 4: Barbra Lica, Danielle Knibbe & Alexandra May Track 5: Barbra Lica & Tom Fleming Track 6: Barbra Lica & James Bryan Track 7: Barbra Lica Produced by: Track 1 & 4: Barbra Lica & Joel Visentin Track 2: Barbra Lica & Nicolas Tateishi Track 3 & 6: Barbra Lica & James Bryan Track 5: Barbra Lica & Christine Bougie Track 7: Barbra Lica & Drew Jurecka Strings Arranging: Track 7: Drew Jurecka Editing: Tracks 1 & 4: Joel Visentin Track 2: Nicolas Tateishi Tracks 3 & 6: James Bryan Track 5: Christine Bougie Track 7:Drew Jurecka Vocals: Barbra Lica Support Vocals for Track 1: Contributed by: Genevieve Marentette, Sammy Jackson, Lori Cullen, Andrea Ramolo, Whitney Ross-Barris, Carole Binsky, Faith Amour, Laurent Bourque, Avery Raquel, Denielle Bassels, Chynna Lewis, Joanna Majoko, Stacey MacIntyre, Gina Pennesi, Leah Canali, Julie Mahendran, Sara Lynn Swaigen, Julia Swaigen, Grace Hightower, Evie Hightower Synth Programming: Tracks 1 & 4: Joel Visentin Track 2: Nicolas Tateishi Tracks 3 & 6: James Bryan Track 7: Drew Jurecka Keyboards: Track 1 & 4: Joel Visentin Piano: Track 5: Joel Visentin Track 7: Barbra Lica Organ: Track 3: Joel Visentin Guitars: Tracks 1 & 5: Christine Bougie Track 2: Nicolas Tateishi Tracks 3 & 6: James Bryan Track 4: Rich Grossman Electric Bass: Track 4: Alex St.Kitts Track 5: Mark Godfrey Track 6: James Bryan Acoustic Bass: Track 7: Justin Gray Drums: Track 1: Sarah Thawer Track 5: Joshua VanTassel Track 6: Marito Marques Trumpet: Track 4: Tom Moffett Violins,Violas: Track 7: Drew Jurecka Mixed by: Justin Gray @ Synthesis Sound Productions Mastered by: Justin Gray @ Immersive Mastering Photography by: Jen Squires Makeup and Hair by: Sydney Desnoyers Haircut and colour by: Jamie Potts CD Graphics and Design by: Matilda Armstrong 8-Bit Disc Art by: Matthew Barnett This project is funded in part by FACTOR, the Government of Canada and Canada’s private radio broadcasters. Moody31, the latest album from Toronto’s Lydia Persaud, brings a full spectrum of emotion. Shimmery runs fall alongside precise enunciations that slightly quiver on pitch. A singer with daring range, she stretches words – subtly melismatic, smooth, slantly gospel – to their full emotional capacity. Out April 29 via Next Door Records, her sophomore record remodels a multitude of influences into a dynamic and harmonious original. Described by producer Scott McCannell as “Roberta Flack sitting in with Bill Withers' band at a folk festival,” Moody31 recombines jazz, R&B, and folk stylings to create soul music in its most literal sense.
Persaud is sharing the first single from the upcoming album, 'Good For Us', a track which she wrote while on tour in Halifax, NS. “Funny thing about bad communication when you’re away from home is, you can decide to sit by the phone or be present and go outside,” says Persaud. “The song definitely captures the moment of deciding to go outside and recognizes that space was what we both needed at the time. Somewhere along the way ‘Good For Us’ became a celebratory anthem outlining the importance of space and self reflection in order to make room for clarity. Kyla Charter and James Baley had outlined the chorus background vocals while they were singing backup for me at live shows. I had them take a break during this tune because I didn’t have vocal parts arranged yet, while the band and I played I could see them side stage dancing along and echoing ‘good for us’. Listening back to the echoing parts now feels like a group of friends offering support and words of wisdom. I remember sitting in Scott McCannell’s basement studio to re-record ‘Good For Us’ for the album. I was introducing him to Christine Bougie as the guitarist for the album and at the time this felt like a real moment, given that the family was tight. Scott, Ben McDonald, Chino De Villa, and I had put a lot of musical and emotional energy into the dynamic that was the 4 of us. Now that Christine was in our midst, being the legend that she is, Scott was both excited and protective of the music that we had so carefully created together. Obviously it was a perfect match. Not only was Scott blown away by Christine’s insane ability to create melody lines that fit so perfectly and tightly within the groove, but she bought her nylon guitar that was able to fill out the frequencies that my baritone ukulele always lacked.”
On the video, Persaud says, “My art director, Josh Rille and I wanted to keep things minimal and cute for ‘Good For Us’, filming everything on iPhones while giving the Super 8 film feel. The song is about taking care of ourselves and knowing when to choose freedom from spaces that no longer serve us. I was very thankful to capture laughter and joy amongst the people that make me feel very loved, as it puts a spotlight on the energy we should be giving and receiving.”
