how to bring less stuff into your home
• don't buy if you already have something similar in function or form — for ex. i already own a pair of boots, therefore any new pair of boots, even if a different colour or a different shape, must stay in the store.
• don't buy to store (unless it's on a good sale) — ex. i'm halfway through my favourite serum and already thinking of buying a new bottle, but i'll hold off until the previous one is actually empty, unless i see it in the store for much less than it usually costs. i also hoard notebooks and try not to buy any more until all have been used up.
• don't buy what you can reasonably rent or borrow — ex. i barely ever buy books because i can find everything i need at the library (including a ladder and a printer).
• don't buy what you truly do not need — ex. did i get a rose quartz roller? yes. did i get it for a purpose? yes, to massage my sore jaw muscles. does it do what i bought it for? meh. is it nice to have? kind of. do i ever use it? not really. so was it a waste of natural resources, cheap labour and my own money? absolutely.
• don't buy spontaneously — ex. i went to the store to buy a new bottle of shampoo but ended up with the rose quartz roller too. in the moment, i could easily justify the need for it and a friend even said to go for it (it wasn't expensive either!). now it sits in its box and i only remember to take it out every three months.
• don't buy what is not on your shopping list — ex. i needed a new pair of black trousers, and had had them on my list for months already. i found the very best pair i could get on my budget, and going into the store i saw so many beautiful pieces, but kept telling myself i only came in for the black trousers. in the end i left the store with only what i needed, because i knew exactly what my mission there was.
• don't buy what won't last — ex. i love to get myself a bouquet of eucalyptus branches every autumn and to let them dry out. i know i can keep those branches for at least a year. while i love fresh flowers too, i know they won't last long. (sometimes i get carnations though, because i know how to keep them going for a relatively long time.) same goes for sweaters: i do not buy acrylic and polyester, simply because i cannot de-pill them the way i can wool.
• don't buy what other's have — ex. i've been dreaming of a rice cooker for a very long time, and especially now that many of my friends have gotten one, i can't seem to stop thinking about it. however i know my current kitchen just wouldn't have the space for it, so i stick to cooking my rice on the stove.
• don't go into stores if you don't need anything and avoid aisles you don't need anything from — ex. i love this ecological store in town, it always smells earthy and pleasant and has beautiful things inside, but if i enter it without a real need for something, i know i will leave with at least a bar of ridiculously expensive chocolate i wasn't even craving. the same principle applies to online shops!
• don't let social media or the people around you create new needs for you — ex. a lot of people on instagram and in my real life are knitting and i would love to do it too! i could easily justify getting all the tools and paying hundreds of euros for wool, but i know i reach for other activities in my free time and that my arms have hurt way too much when i've previously knitted, so it's not for me.
• don't buy unnecessary amounts of things — ex. i recently moved to a very small studio. i've previously always had six of each type of plate, because kitchen things tend to be sold in packs of six. this time i just got three of each (three plates, three bowls, three mugs...) and it has been more than enough. i cannot even imagine having to store double the amount of stuff in my tiny kitchen!

Reminder to myself
You don't need new clothes.
You don't need new house decor.
You don't need new organizing boxes/bins/....
You don't need new hobby stuff.
You won't be friends with the influencer, even if you buy their book or course or whatever it is they sell.
You won't even be friends with your online friends because you give them money or buy their book or fanzine or whatever it is they sell.
You only need time offline so you can start thinking for yourself again.
You only need a good inventory of what you already have.
You only need to keep decluttering and realize that you don't magically change because you buy new items.
You only need gratitude for the roof over your head, the food in your stomach and the stuff you already have.
You only need to read more books because it's fun and it takes your eyes of the screens for a while.
You only need to write more fanfiction because it's fun and it makes you forget about the world/ your life for a while.

Week 3’s worth of outfits. As useful as Stylebook is, I think I’m going to have to bite the bullet and start taking fit pics.

Contentment, and goals for no buy/low buy
I have been really enjoying Shawna Ripari's content recently, and her "year of contentment" project especially has given me a lot to think about in terms of my own spending habits and current low buy. I've never really had a problem with impulsive spending; in fact I would say I have the exact opposite problem where I can be overly strict with spending on myself. I have been trying to get better at this, while trying not to go too far/overcompensate and develop a overspending habit --- hence the low buy I'm currently on.
Shawna talked in her first "year of contentment" video that low buys/no buys tend to focus on the act of buying/spending and on stuff, which I agree; low buys/no buys in my experience doesn't help to shift focus away from stuff or spending on a fundamental level that will help you change your relationship with what you own, which might be part of the reason why they can be difficult to stick to for some. No buys and low buys basically cuts down spending cold turkey which also doesn't help in cultivating and exercising discipline and healthy spending habits. Personally, as someone who is generally too strict with my personal spending, no buys/low buys can vilify spending in away that exacerbates that guilt after spending which is not healthy or helpful at all.
Watching Shawna's videos have given me the inspiration to come up with my personal goals that I want to achieve with my low buy - in doing so, a low buy becomes more of a means to an end and not the end in itself, which I think is much healthier and reminds me not to hyper-focus on the dollar amount of what I'm spending/not spending. Instead, a low buy becomes a very powerful tool to help me do what I want. So, very briefly, here are some of my goals that I set for my low buy this year:
1. To hit savings/investment goals
2. To build healthier spending habits
- Be less strict on spend $$ on items that can improve health/general well-being/quality of life etc. (within reason) - To enjoy my spending with less guilt and not hoard money unnecessarily - To support local businesses as much as possible when I spend
3. Donate more $$ to charity more regularly
4. Help save for parents' retirement
5. To be a more conscientious consumer
- Spend $$ on fewer but better quality items that last - Avoid fast fashion
6. Use what I already own - avoid waste!
I think I can probably do a whole other post on being a conscientious consumer - another thing that has been on my mind a lot lately especially since Earth Day.
I strongly recommend Shawna's channel by the way, she makes really great and thoughtful content which I think is really helpful whether you are on a low buy/no buy or not.

october low-buy results & november goals
october was a success! i only spent money on 2 things: shipping a package (and that was a planned expense for a birthday gift) and underground tickets (because i forgot my pass home that day, sigh).
i found myself wishing for materials for various crafts (embroidery, bead jewellery, cotton yarn) but i stopped myself since i already have a ton of yarn in my stash and various projects i want to get done quickly. this month i finished 1 sweater and 1 sock.
i sold 5 used books online! and since it was my birthday i also received some money gifts.
since i did so well, i decided to donate the proceeds from one of the books to a charity. it's something that i'd like to do more after I've hit my savings goals.
november should go equally well. i don't expect to sell as many books, but i don't foresee spending money at all. no planned purchases for this month! it would be nice if i was able to really hit a 0€ spent in November. i do have plans for december :) but that's quite far away now.
i wish a happy november to you all!

After a few meh years on the other blue site I am migrating back to this one.
I went to an estate sale a few weeks ago of a woman who had a truly amazing collection of fabrics and after buying a bit more than I needed I had the realization that there is simply not enough time in my life to finish all of the projects I want to complete. And since I refuse to let anyone else get their mitts on my fabrics after I am gone, I will actually need to use what I have. I spent my 4 day thanksgiving break measuring, organizing, and documenting my collection of fabrics, (I used the fabric tracking sheet from incolororder.com) which was very eye opening.. I found so many fabrics I had forgotten about but am so excited to work with..
So, I’ll be trying a fabric low buy year, and I hope to document everything I make from my collection here, I will mostly be sewing items for my lolita wardrobe, some costumes, and may hopefully learn how to make pants I actually like.
Hopefully will post some finished projects soon :o)

"Cash only" – Low Buy for fuzzy ADD brains
"Cash only" – Low Buy for fuzzy ADD brains … because saving some money may be harder than you think :)
Little Lou helps to sew cushions for the balcony (with fabric I already had) As some may remember, I embarked on another Low/No Buy journey at the beginning of the year, with varied success. Going strong in January and parts of February, I fell back into old habits—buying a ton of books—in late February and early March, in part due to being stressed out about the Russian invasion and war in…

Hello! Honoring the call for a global strike, from now (24/01/2024) until the end of this week (6AM Monday 29/01/2024, Hanoi/Jakarta time (GMT+7)) I am offering one full-body sketch of any character you want for every e-sim you donate.
All you need to do is:
go to gazaesims.com
follow the instruction there and donate an e-sim of any plan
screenshot the confirmation of your purchase and donation
send the screenshots to me via either email ([email protected]) or Tumblr DM, along with the character you want a sketch of and any references you have on hand.
Standard commission/request guideline applied. I'll run streams in the next four days (and perhaps after as well) on Youtube doing these sketches live - those will be announced on this blog as they happen.
I'm not currently affiliated with the Cartoonist Cooperative or any other artists doing the same drive, but if my art's not what you're looking for, definitely give the Coop's site as well as the e-sim tag on Tumblr a look! And if you're not looking for sketch commissions from me or art commission in general at the moment, I encourage you to donate an e-sim anyway if possible.
Thank you for your work and support - I can't wait to draw your character!

Had my first brush with temptation today. My dog managed to smash her ceramic water bowl with her big hard head, so I ventured to an Op Shop (thrift store) to find her a cheap replacement.
Tumblr media
The big hard head in question. She is fine.
I went to Vinnies (a second hand shop chain popular in Australia. It’s technically ‘St Vincent de Paul’ but no one calls it that, not even the store chain itself). I’ve been here many, many times to do a spot of clothes hunting, and have scored some incredible bargains there- $5 Burberry, $25 YSL, a fabulous trench coat I wore constantly through spring- and oh, the temptation to take a little peek at what was on offer was strong.
I walked to the homewares, picked up a bowl, and walked straight to the counter.
“You knew what you were looking for!” remarked the volunteer behind the counter.
And- perhaps for the first time when walking in to an Op Shop- I did.

Daily reminder that fruit and veggies don't have to be "healthy" to be nutritious. Drink that fruit juice from concentrate. Eat that jam and nut butter. Use fruit and vegetables out of a can. Eat a dessert with fruit in it. Snack on salted nuts (in moderation) or dried fruit. Literally any way you can get fruit and vegetables into your body is better than none at all.
If fresh fruit and veg aren't available to you, take too much energy to eat or prepare, or if you just can't bring yourself to eat them, whatever way you can eat them is good enough.

havent watched/read dungeon meshi yet but im starting to understand via tumblr post that it's not a story where normal people eventually do profane things out of desperation but is in fact a story where a handful of freaks who are desperate to do some truly unnatural things give in as soon as they're given the opportunity. jury is still out over whether marcille and falin kiss though
