Jimmy Nelson’s The “Art” of Communication Analysis
When I just started watching his speech, I wanted to tell him to pause, drink some water and breathe. He was talking way too fast like he was being chased! However, those thoughts died down when I was starting to get captivated by his story of how he wasted his money on this guy who was supposed to help him in interpreting the language of the Tsaatan Tribe in Northern Mongolia. What happened was that they had a miscommunication and misunderstanding between him and his interpreter. Turns out the guy only wanted Jimmy’s money so he didn’t tell Jimmy they were walking towards the wrong valley when they spent 2 weeks of walking to get to that valley. But Jimmy was patient.
He talked about the night when he finally gave up because it seemed like he couldn’t get the chance to get a photograph of the Tsaatan Tribe and so he finally gave in and drank the alcohol that was being passed inside the tent and according to him after drinking, he finally smiled after days in his journey. Then they all dozed off but Jimmy suddenly woke up and wanted to go to the loo but he made a mistake and spread his urine all over the place and on his clothes. Now, he didn’t know that the reason why the reindeers are following the tribe was because of the urine they sprinkled to the ground because he wasn’t paying too much attention to his surroundings and what was happening. So, he was suddenly cornered by the reindeers to the edge of the cliff and he started screaming for help. One man looked at him and gestured to look at him, pointed gestures to everybody and then they put their hands over their stomachs and they all started laugh and Jimmy told them to stop screaming and help him instead. However, they all started laughing and laughing without any form of language whatsoever and then the man pointed at Jimmy’s groin and he pulled Jimmy back down the villagers and everybody was laughing at him and pointing at his groin and so Jimmy realized the reason why the reindeer were walking towards him.
The next day arrived and a very heartwarming thing happened. They sort of slowly made contact and finally found a way to communicate with each other despite the language barrier and so he finally got to take a photograph of them. But in the process of taking pictures of them it required a massive amount of communication to take the perfect picture. And he did it by talking slowly as if he was talking to a child and demonstrating it to them.
So, what happened in his journey was that in communicating with the tribe it was hindered by the language barrier. However, since Jimmy was patient, he waited. Then a sort of miracle happened and they suddenly had contact with each other. It might be because of the night before where he finally gave in and drank the alcohol to making them laugh at his mistake of almost falling off the cliff because of the reindeers sniffing his pants. Maybe at first the tribe felt sort of dismayed because he didn’t know that passing around their alcohol is a part of their culture in greeting or welcoming people and he rejected the alcohol until the night he decided he’s going home the next day. His story just reminded me that no matter the language barrier we can still communicate with other people, though it will take awhile but the key point here is patience, respect and understanding. Before he finally got to take a picture, it required him patience in trying to communicate with them; respect in not crossing borders and not forcing them into anything; and understanding by carefully observing the tribe and pay attention to them.
