"i'm struggling to find gifs" "why can't i find gifs of this scene or this show" "why are less people taking requests"

you repost to twitter, to pinterest, to instagram, to tiktok and lord knows what else. on twitter, a single gif taken from a gifset that didn't even receive 1k notes (not 1k likes or even 1k rbs, if that even exists these days) can get 3m views and 30k+ likes. without credit, of course - if you're lucky, you get a mispelled: made by x on tumblr, no link of course.

hell, you repost on this very site and you refuse to listen. your set, stolen from someone else and mixed in with quotes, gets 1k notes meanwhile the original sits at less than 500. you do not credit the person who made it.

we ask you to reblog things instead of liking them and you go on rants about how it's unnecessary and how we should do it for fun. we explain a hundred times that tumblr doesn't work the way other social media platforms work, but you refuse. you wonder why there are less gifmakers.

gifs don't take 10 seconds like on ezgif or imgflip or whatever the hell you're using. it takes hours sometimes to even download footage, but you don't care. it's a moving image that we "stole" (?) from the original work but the labour? you don't care. depending on our process, it can take from half an hour (the downloading and the editing part) to hours upon hours. but who cares.

you credit text posts, fanvids, and you go after those who steal written work (as you should). we cannot even get other gifmakers to care when our stuff is stolen. staff took away our only tool to fight reposters on this site, and we never had any to fight reposting to other sites.

we know what the staff is aiming at with the changes they make and the changes they refuse to make - we explain that why disabling likes would help, they say they will not do it. they cannot slap an @ onto gifs when saved to prevent stealing but boy, look at the shiny new editor that adds an additional least 5 minutes to upload your gifs! again, intention is very clear.

we know you don't steal gifs under a certain quality and we know you ask us for requests for scenes/parallels that have been done because you do not like the quality of those. we see you stealing quality sets.

there is no point to this i just needed to vent. staff is disregarding the very foundation of this site, gifmakers are given less and less respect and you wonder why scenes aren't giffed.

i don't know. add your perspective if you want

The Gaia Thomas situation

If you don’t use Twitter/X, here is a brief summary of what’s going on for those who use tumblr and have caught glimpses of the current events going on over there related to someone whose name is Gaia Thomas. All information explained here is publicly accessible and can be found if you search on X/Twitter.

Gaia Thomas made two gofundme fundraisers for the following people who needed help in relation to Palestine: Mai Rajab and Kareemadnan. She befriended them and promised the money would go towards them.

Unfortunately as of March 3rd, it seems Gaia had no plans to actually support them and sent Mai a text saying “I am not responsible for your travel. I wish you the best of luck.” And promptly closed the GoFundMe before reopening it. Originally both had been closed but both are open. Mai is the main one who’s posted about it, but Kareem is affected as well.

Currently there has been no updates about what Gaia Thomas has to say about the situation, but a post on Twitter/X made by cérise 🌻 says Gaia is “a disabled writer who is a self-claimed expert in cultural awareness, health and empowerment” (a direct quote from the original tweet) and Gaia does have a LinkedIn page.

The two GoFundMe’s are linked below if you’d like to report them as Gaia isn’t giving the money to the people she was going to help. This post will update if anything changes but I wanted to make a post that explained it without images. The fundraisers were still open as of posting.

Latest update at 3/5/2023 3pm: Following the accusations, Gaia posted this update claiming she was supposedly fell for a scam. The following text is copied from her response on the fundraisers:

Dear donors,

I was the victim of an online scam. My credit union caught the scam when I tried to wire transfer the proceeds of Mai's fundraiser. In the interests of donor safety, I blocked donations at that time. The evidence is in the hands of the Alameda Police Department. Please be aware that this could happen to you. All funds have been repaid in the form of donations to the original fundraiser as requested by the GoFundMe team. I have asked GoFundMe to return the funds to the hands of the original donors.

Latest update at 3/8/2024: All the fundraisers made by Gaia have been closed and you can now find new ones made by someone else that is more reliable then Gaia was. Gaia insists that she was scammed but she wasn’t. She tried to take the money as her own and didn’t like it when she was caught out by the people she was supposed to help. The money donated has been refunded but those funds will likely never reach the three people Gaia was meant to help.

This fansite theme, is a single-column Tumblr theme with a left or right sidebar), and a Google font of your choosing. Full support of npf posts. to edit affiliate links you will need very basic html knowledge, but all is explained below and in the code. Everything else can be changed directly in the customization panel!

Basics:

Customize colours for dark and light mode

Select font-size (11-18px)

Select Post-width (350-540px)

Select post info displayed as text or icons

Toggle between sharp or round corners on content and/or photos

Note: Everything can be changed in the customization panel - EXCEPT for affiliates. You can toggle off/on each section of boxes

Navigation: An unlimited display of native Tumblr pages in the sidebar. Learn how they work in my FAQ here. Custom home archive + ask + submit titles in the top bar.

Sidebar Image: Choose between the sizes 100px,150px, 200px or 255px. Choose a shape between square, rounded, circle or blob.

Dark Mode: If you decide to offer dark mode, it detects if visitor’s operating system is on dark mode, and displays that choice at the first visit - of course with the option to toggle the other mode on/off.

Change icons: in updates box / events box / social media in the footer, you can change the icons . Go to phosphoricons.com and simply copy the name of the icon like so, (into the in the corresponding text box)

Members box: Will update automatically as you add or remove members. To hide the apply-icon link, simply remove the text in the Members Apply URL text box.

Updates box: 4 updates, to hide one, simply delete the text in the field corresponding. To change the icons please see above.

Events box: 4 events, to hide one simply delete the text in the description box, ie. Event 1 Description. To change the icons please see above.

Projects box: 3 projects, with the ability to add more manually if desired. To do so, search for *PROJECT BOX TEMPLATE* in the code. To hide a project delete the text in the project title. An optional image for each project can be uploaded right at the top of the customization panel below Sidebar Image.

Affiliates box: To hide the apply-icon link, simply remove the text in the Affiliates Apply URL text box. To edit the affiliates, search for *AFFILLIATE SECTION* in the code and follow the instructions.

Quote box: the source text box is optional. and you can of course toggle off the entire quote section as well.

Site info box: the established date, founder and tracked tag is all optional.

Footer disclaimer: your disclaimer about the blog is placed in the footer of the site. alongside with the search bar, it isn't optional so please do fill out some information.

Footer social links: Upt to five links. To change the icons please see above under change icons.

Custom /submit page text: Here you can write about members/affiliate applications and such. Will only appear on /submit page. html and links allowed. Can be hidden if you simply delete the text in the corresponding fields.

Custom /ask page text: Here you can write a note for people sending asks. Will only appear on /ask page. html and links allowed. Can be hidden if you simply delete the text in the corresponding fields.

Other:

Via/source links are on permalink pages

author of who posted/reblogged the post is on permalink pages

to hide the archive link, simply delete the text in the field.

Submit-link and ask-link only shows if toggled on in your blog’s settings.

A simple sidebar theme in a similar vein to Theia. I made this as an answer to an ask I answered not too long ago (it definitely feels like forever ago though). Suitable for all kinds of blogs.

Features:

Customizable post widths and font sizes. The live preview uses 600px post width and 13px font size. Enter the desired post width on the post width field and the desired font size on the font size field on the Customization page.

Customizable photoset gutter.

One accent color, 8 color options

A 64x64px icon on the sidebar. Any square image will resize automatically.

3 custom links.

Notes:

This theme uses the new NPF theme base. Everything should work as expected, except for some things, particularly reblogged quote posts. See below for an explanation.

A quote reblogged via the new editor will be, unfortunately, displayed as a usual blockquote. This is a Tumblr bug. I have tried my best to support both legacy and new quotes while the legacy editor is still in use, but as we slowly transition to the new editor, design choices have to be made, and for the time being that choice is made for us theme makers by the staff.

BIBLICHOR ! a five-page free to use, single muse character template. biblichor includes a general profile, appearance, personality, history, and relations. it is probably not mobile friendly, but i'm unsure because i didn't test it out myself. a big thanks to @thistlemurder who helped create this template! it was my first time ever making a character template from scratch and i had so much fun! definitely going to continue making templates and i hope i improve and learn as i go foward. feel free to edit this in any way you'd like! take free reign. however, do not remove the credits.

how to use :: . . . click on the embed link that will direct you to the template. once you are there, click file > make a copy. name the document and then you'll be directed to your copy of the template. . . . go to share > change general access to anyone on the internet with the link can view (unless you don't want that!) how to edit :: . . . all images in this document are not drawings. to change them, right-click the images and press 'replace image'. it is preferred you use this method instead of copy pasting and then resizing the image. . . . changing font sizes may mess up the placement of the tables and images. if you run into a problem with the font size, just click undo. . . . exceeding the limit of text in the tables may displace the images and tables. i very much recommend adding a link to a continuation of the text. . . . feel free to dm me if you have any trouble with this doc! i'm open to questions and to helping you with whatever (i'm not that google docs savvy though, beware.) thank you all! likes and reblogs are heavily appreciated.

Please say more about the awful Asian designs in Danny Phantom. I'm not Asian but I'd love to have a rundown on the elements that make them offensive so I can avoid and critique those elements in other works. And also you deserve to speak your mind about it

im gonna mostly talk about southeast asian designs since thats what i am and the most familiar with and also what i feel are the show's worst transgression with their casual depictions. tw for racist imagery im gonna link pictures.

there's not much to say about the designs aside from, you know, everything but things to note are the unnatural yellow tone for the skin and closed slanted eyes. veggie burger (fan name for the bg character in the middle) also suffers from the huge nose that sometimes shows up in racist depictions. the straight edge/cut hair as well is somewhat stereotypical. this one isn't as bad but in conjunction with everything else its not ideal. i will give the smallest molecule of credit that at the very least dp never gave any of these bg characters buck teeth.

some depictions are better than others, but theres still missteps happening in one aspect or another. kwan's eyes in a lot of shots/episodes can be too skinny and even too slanted, the girl in the middle is almost perfect but her skin is too yellow (she looks kinda okay on my computer screen but i remember when watching dp on my tv she looked real brightly yellow), and principle ishiyama (who was weirdly forgotten about pretty early on in the show and was replaced by lancer doing most of the school stuff despite not being principle?? which is a whole other issue with how dp treats its poc characters) the same usual notes about the slanted eyes but also the upturned nose is pretty reminiscent of racist japanese art during ww2. again it is not the worst way to draw a nose but combined with everything else in this show's depiction of asian characters its not great, they are on thin ice man.

not to mention, principle ishiyama is the only character here with brown eyes. this is a problem that extends to all poc characters in dp and to my knowledge i think ishiyama might be the only one with them tbh. this is, again, a whole other issue though.

i think the thing that bothers me most about these designs though is that dp is very clearly aware that these depictions are bad. the only difference between the first set of characters and the second is one singular thing: they have a clear speaking role.

suddenly when theyre not stock background characters, dp knows how to act when drawing them. i cannot for the life of me find the image of it, but the last jock guy in the first set gets a speaking role in reign storm (he's cosplaying phantom) and he is drawn with proper open eyes! (theyre also blue but whatever) it just makes me sad that this was a clear choice they made.

the show also went in a different direction in the final product, but early development stuff was really drawing from a lot of japanese/asian influences like danny was originally gonna have a motorcycle (pulling from ghost in the shell) and was even referenced in the show via the akira motorcycle reference (which i once again, for the life of me, cannot find. danny took johnny 13's motorcycle and did the classic akira slide i think it was in million dollar ghost?? idk whichever one where the giw are trying to blow up the ghost zone). danny's name was originally gonna be jackie, named after jackie chan, this i assume was given to jack fenton afterwards. and i think the show having a more martial arts direction with the action was also gonna be a thing? that one could be wrong dont quote me on that, there was an episode where danny and vlad have like a weird ninja fight though im pretty sure.

either way my point here is that they wanted to pull from all these influences and it was prominent enough during development that they sprinkle references to it throughout the show and yet their portrayal and treatment of asian characters in the show is so abysmal it just feels Bad™, you know? i cant really put it more eloquently than that, like its very take and no give with it.

it overall just puts a bad taste in my mouth, and its sad that it still affects people years later. like i mentioned in the tags of the post that started this discussion with that whole old trend of putting yourself into the bg of dp screenshots, i felt alienated by that. and its not the people who participated's fault obviously but most of the people i saw participating were white fans (going off of how they drew themselves) and it made me a bit mad that they were able to enjoy the style of the show in a more carefree manner than i ever could. i didnt want to ruin anyone's fun obviously, but a small part of me wanted to bring to light how i wasnt on equal ground with them in that situation.

Hatchetfield High Yearbook Project Signups

Welcome to the signups for the Hatchetfield High Yearbook Project

Rules:

Individual Character artists will pick the name (or only last name) for their character if their character doesn’t have one, and writers will go along with it for their articles/interviews. (unless an actor or the Langs reveal the canon names of a previously unnamed character during the process of this project)

All art and writing must be original, not AI-generated or made by anyone else (commission, picrew, etc.)

All art and writing must be digital, it just looks more uniform. (If you need help digitalizing a traditional sketch, I can help with that!)

Each artist will draw the characters in their piece as they normally draw them, I will clarify which characters are which along with crediting each artist in captions below the photo)

No infighting, be respectful and agree to disagree in the discord server if an argument arises over fandom stuff. It’s not that big of a deal </3 (Note - If enough trouble is caused, you may be removed from the project and your piece may be replaced)

For now, the due date for all art and writing is March 20th. (Note: This is subject to change. If you are unable to submit your piece at the deadline, contact me, or one of the moderators if I am unreachable, as soon as possible)

A little bit about the Project:

It will be free, both to participate in and consume!

We'll have a discord server for project organization, with other general and fandom related channels for fun in the meantime.

When it is finished, I will roll it out as both a flipbook AND a slideshow, as the slide show will be of a higher/clearer quality than the flipbook program I use.

it will be modeled similarly to the Ride the Cyclone yearbook project, but without all the little info per character, as Hatchetfield High is a much bigger school than St. Cassian. There will still, however, be senior quotes!

For signature pages, everyone who participates will sign a transparent image with their name and/or a little quote/doodle, just like you would sign an actual yearbook in high school. Individual character artists will also sign a separate transparent image as their character, unless their character is an alumni, and I will arrange them on their own pages just like the signature pages of the Ride the Cyclone yearbook project linked above.

You may apply to be both an artist and a writer, but please tell me which you would prefer to be in the forms.

If you change your tumblr url while working on this project, please contact me so I can give you proper credit.

This is intended to be a fansite! I am finally happy with how this turned out after a few iterations. This theme features Emet-Selch from Final Fantasy XIV. Be warned going into the live preview as this theme heavily features content that can be found on various points of Shadowbringers and Endwalker, which may or may not be a spoiler!

Features:

Customizable post widths and font sizes. The live preview uses 650px post width and 13px font size. Enter the desired post width on the post width field and the desired font size on the font size field on the Customization page.

One accent color, 7 color options

Option for title alignment (centered/lefthand side/righthand side) to accommodate for the chosen header image.

Option to display or hide the blog title.

Built-in dual sidebar layout. All the boxes on the sidebar (members, events, updates, and site info) and the footer (disclaimer, about, and search box) can be edited from the code directly.

5 custom links at the topbar with additional 8 links on the navigation box.

Customizable photoset gutter. The live preview uses 10px gutter.

A header image. The size of the header (w x h) is the width of your screen x 350px. So if your screen width is 1900px, then the size of your header should be 1900 x 350px.

This theme uses @eggdesign's NPF reverse-compatible template. Everything should be working as expected, except for some things noted below.

As we slowly transition into the new editor, posts made by the legacy editor will eventually break. This is particularly evident in a quote post reblogged via the new editor, in which the post will be rendered as a text post with blockquote and cannot be styled similarly to a legacy quote post. This is a Tumblr bug as far as I am concerned and from what other people have told me, so unfortunately there is nothing I can do about it.
