Hanakotoba Analysis
Tumblr media
Cheng Xiaoshi/Toki -> Daisy (Bellis)
Tumblr media
Cheng Xiaoshi/Toki’s official flower is the Daisy (Bellis) as pictured on his official birthday artwork. Daisies are known as chú jú (雏菊) in Chinese and hinagiku (雛菊) in Japanese. This flower is associated with the meanings of “innocence”, “devotion”, “justice”, “charity” and “beauty” in English floriography. Its hanakotoba meanings are “peace”, “hope”, “beauty” and “chastity”. In Japanese culture, daisies are also often associated with new beginnings and are thought to bring joy and happiness to those whom it is gifted.  In China, the flower is mainly associated with innocence, purity, hope, and new beginnings. Additionally, they can symbolize simplicity, sincerity, springtime, happiness, and new love.  Cheng Xiaoshi is best described as someone with a good heart whose playful, stubborn and impulsive nature can be interpreted by others as being childish and irresponsible. He is extremely sensitive and deeply empathetic with a strong sense of justice. These characteristics paired with his impulsiveness often not only lead to him making decisions with his heart rather than his head—landing not only himself but also those around him in a myriad of tricky situations—but also result in him doing things that are in the best interest of others but are detrimental to himself. These traits tie into the flower’s meanings of justice, charity and devotion. His seemingly boundless optimism and upbeat personality complement the flower’s meanings of joy, happiness, and springtime. When Lu Guang was asked by Qiao Ling, what attracted him to Cheng Xiaoshi, he stated that it was the other’s naivety. This ties into the flower’s meanings of innocence, sincerity, purity and simplicity. Cheng Xiaoshi has the ability to enter the time of any photo by possessing the body of the person who took the photo. Using this ability, he is able to directly change the events within a 12-hour timeline of the photo (i.e., alter past events). This ties into the daisy’s meanings of new beginnings and hope.  Additionally, when using this ability, Cheng Xiaoshi’s eyes turn gold-yellow which corresponds with the yellow-centre of the daisy.
Lu Guang/Hikaru -> Forget-me-not
Tumblr media
Lu Guang/Hikaru’s official flower is the forget-me-not as pictured on his official birthday artwork. The forget-me-not (Myosotis) is known as wù wàng wǒ  (勿忘我) in Chinese and wasurenagusa (勿忘草) in Japanese. As its name suggests the flower is associated with the meanings of “true love” and “memories” in English floriography. Its Japanese name means “don’t forget me” thus associating the flower with its hanakotoba meanings of “true love” and “remembrance”. In China, the flower is associated with not only true love and memories but also fidelity and faithfulness. Lu Guang is typically calm, patient, responsible and uptight. Although not always blatantly obvious, Lu Guang cares deeply for his friends and always does things that are in their best interest. Although typically stoic and cautious, when those important to Lu Guang are in danger, he will break his usual calm façade and show anger and concern as well as pull off precarious manoeuvres to save them. These traits tie into the flower’s meanings of faithfulness and fidelity. Lu Guang has the ability to see everything that happens within a 12-hour timeframe after a photo has been taken. Photographs are able to capture important moments with loved ones in order to be preserved and looked back upon at a later date. Lu Guang and Cheng Xiaoshi’s abilities rely on photographs and are used to analyse and manipulate memories, respectively. This further links Lu Guang to the forget-me-not flower. Additionally, when using their respective abilities Lu Guang’s eyes turn ice-blue whereas Cheng Xiaoshi’s turn gold-yellow which corresponds with the yellow-centred, blue blossoms of the forget-me-not, respectively. Click here for further analysis of Lu Guang given new information from season 2.
Qiao Ling/Rin -> Hyacinth
Tumblr media
Qiao Ling/Rin’s official flower is the hyacinth as pictured on her official birthday artwork. The hyacinth (Hyacinthus) is known as fēng xìn zǐ (风信子) in Chinese and haiashinsu (ヒヤシンス) in Japanese. The hyacinth is seen as a symbol of sophistication, refinement, grace and elegance in English floriography. It is also known as a symbol of love and passion. It is also sometimes associated with rashness, games and rebirth. Its hanakotoba meanings are friendship, affection and “love beyond sorrow”. The bright colours of hyacinths are said to represent joy and happiness―and is thus seen as a gesture of goodwill when gifted to others in Japanese culture. In China, the flower is associated with good luck and fortune and is thus often used during special occasions and celebrations as an auspicious decoration. It is said that the hyacinth’s bright colours and cheerful blossoms bring prosperity and good luck to those who see it. Qiao Ling is best described as outspoken, expressive, and compassionate. She deeply trusts those she is close to and is very protective over them. Qiao Ling typically possesses a playful and upbeat personality. These traits tie into the hyacinth’s meanings of joy, passion, friendship and goodwill. Although often seen bickering with Cheng Xiaoshi―she retains an air of gracefulness and ladylikeness and often dresses very stylishly, which fits in with the flower’s meanings of elegance, grace and sophistication.
Official Art Celebrating 400 Million Views
Tumblr media
In this official art the flower bouquet that Cheng Xiaoshi is holding might be his official flower the daisy (Bellis) but could also be camomile flowers. Camomile also known as chamomile is a daisy-like plant in the same family as the Bellis genus (Asteraceae family). Camomile is known as  yáng gān jú (洋甘菊) in Chinese and kamomīru (カモミール) in Japanese. In English floriography, the flower represents the concepts of having “patience in adversity” and “energy in adversity”. In hanakotoba, the flower conveys the meanings of “enduring adversity” and the “power to be born in adversity”. Both the English and Japanese meanings derive from the fact that camomile grows like a creeper on the ground and persists even if trampled on―even growing stronger the more it is stepped on. These meanings greatly complement Cheng Xiaoshi’s immense optimism, endurance, and perseverance that persists despite him being faced with difficult circumstances and harsh obstacles.
Tumblr media
In this official artwork, Lu Guang isn’t pictured with his official flower, the forget-me-not but is instead pictured with a bouquet of statice.  Statice (Limonium) is also known as sea lavender and marsh rosemary despite not being related to either lavender or rosemary. Statice is known as bǔxuè cǎo shǔ (补血草属) in Chinese and sutāchisu (スターチス) in Japanese. Similarly, to forget-me-nots, this flower is associated with memory and remembrance. In English floriography, this flower represents “longing”, “remembrance”, “success” and “sympathy”. Purple statice in particular represents suppleness and elegance. The hanakotoba meanings associated with statice are “unchanging heart” and “uninterrupted memory”. The vibrant colour of these flowers does not fade even when dried. This attribute has resulted in its hanakotoba meanings “unchanging heart”, “uninterrupted memory”, and “eternal immutability”.  These meanings are similar to that of the forget-me-not and consequently complement Lu Guang’s character in a similar manner.

[P.S. If anyone knows which two flowers are in the very first image in this post (i.e., the season 2 key visual), please let me know so I can add them...I couldn't figure it out for the life of me. Also, if I've gotten any of the kanji, romaji, hanzi or pinyin incorrect, feel free to correct me]

Urgent Announcement
Hello, everyone.
I am a moderator that was recruited by the original head mod and admin for this project to handle marketing, promotion, and organization for the Beverage Zine. While I do have an online alias I usually go by, for the purposes of this post I will call myself Tea. I am here today with some unfortunate news: the Beverage Zine will be put on hold until mid or late spring of 2019, perhaps even later than that. The original admin no longer appears to be a part of this project, so I, Tea, will be taking over in their place. However, there are complicated circumstances and real life situations that will prevent me from immediately assuming the reins. I will explain the reasons for this in this post below the cut, and I ask that you read all of it before responding or asking questions.
Thank you in advance.
I want to preface this by saying that I have included screenshots of my conversation(s) and that of others (with their permission) to back up my claims. Names have been censored and replaced with pseudonyms to maintain privacy. These images can be accessed via the Imgur link at the bottom of this post.
Please do not go and witch hunt the original admin or anyone else involved; I do not wish anything ill of them. I want to stress that this is not meant to be a call out post or anything of the sort to stir up drama; I am simply reporting what I understand to have happened and why things ended up as they are now.
I understand that there may be some distrust with all of this coming out of the blue, but I want nothing more than to be 100% transparent with the people that support this zine, as it is a project that I, too, had greatly looked forward to. Okay. Let’s truly begin.
I originally heard about the Beverage Zine through a fellow moderator for another project. I became interested in moderating for the Beverage Zine, so I sent an ask to their Tumblr blog to inquire about mod applications. To my surprise, the head mod for the Beverage Zine (whom I shall refer to as Bev) almost immediately messaged my personal Tumblr and suggested that they interview me for a position. Since I had free time at the moment, I agreed and the interview began. The questions were all pretty standard and pertained to my past experience with moderating zines. Bev seemed impressed by my responses and, once again to my surprise, they were quick to offer me a moderator position. They expressed to me that they had little to no experience with zines and was seeking very experienced moderators to help them.
Now, I did think it was a little strange at first because the Beverage Zine sounded like a big project for someone who has no experience heading a zine. However, I had been a newbie at some point too and sympathized with the difficulty of getting one’s foot in the door, as many zines are competitive nowadays. Bev seemed friendly and eager to learn, so I did not mind assisting with the project and offering advice based on my experience. Additionally, I was extremely excited about this project, as I had actually pitched the idea for a beverage gijinka zine to my friends a few months back, and had even sketched concept ideas for zine mascots during the frenzy.
In short, I was enamored with the zine theme and wanted to help mentor Bev, so I accepted the offer. Bev soon invited me to the Beverage Zine Tumblr blog and promoted me to admin. I was also invited to join the Beverage Zine Discord server (of which Bev and I were the only inhabitants) to further discuss planning.
Bev then proceeded to make a zine Twitter account and a moderator application form to do the rest of their mod recruiting, instructing me to not fill out the form. I was not given access to the Google forms/email or to the Twitter account at this point. The next day, I realized that I could no longer access the Beverage Zine Discord server-Bev had booted me without a word and had also quietly left the Beverage Zine blog, leaving me as the only admin.
It was around this time that a friend and a co-mod of mine (let’s call them Wendy) expressed distress concerning the Hanakotoba zine (the one regarding flowers and their meanings). According to Wendy, Bev was also moderating Hanakotoba and had recruited a team of 4 moderators via interview to put the project together. However, in the middle of planning, Bev suddenly informed her Hanakotoba mod team that they were opening mod applications to the public and that the current mods had to reapply to maintain their positions. Of course, the mods were upset that they had already done so much work for the zine, only to be randomly stripped of their positions. To my knowledge, though Bev promised to not reuse anyone’s work, there are claims that they are continuing to use the assets these Hanakotoba mods provided for them for their various other projects. For example, Wendy claims the mod application form they are using at the moment is a template Wendy herself made. Another dropped mod claims that Bev is using an FAQ template that she made. I cannot personally verify these claims with photo evidence. Bev appears to have blocked those that questioned her publicly about dropping their Hanakotoba mod team on the zine’s Twitter account and is refusing to respond to concerns and questions.
Wendy told Bev she would tell others to be wary of them because of their behavior in the Hanakotoba Zine and other projects. Bev responded by telling Wendy that they understood, but then it looks like they blocked Wendy. I assume that from there, Bev kicked me from their Beverage Zine server and left the Tumblr account for the project.
To clarify, I was never told by Bev that they would be abandoning this project, they seem to have assumed I would drop the Beverage Zine once I heard of their behavior (which I honestly would have), so they made the preemptive move to leave before I did. On my end, it appeared as though Bev had kicked me out of Discord and ghosted me for no reason that I could discern had it not been for Wendy and the other dropped Hanakotoba mods clarifying things for me.
Because I had not anticipated any of this to happen, nor do I have a way to get back into that server, I do not have any screenshots from the Beverage Zine Discord server to provide. If you are wondering why I did not try other avenues of contact to reach Bev, it’s because they never provided any initially. The majority of my contact with Bev was done via messaging between my personal Tumblr account and their Beverage Zine account, and because I am not friends on Discord with Bev and no longer share any servers with Bev, I cannot contact them. Wendy used to know what Bev’s social media accounts were, but they were all deleted shortly after I was booted from the Beverage Zine Discord server.
Recently, I was messaged by Bev from their personal Tumblr account. In their messages, they apologized for their behavior, asked to rejoin the project, and offered to give me the login information for the Beverage Zine Twitter and email account if I chose to not let them back in. I politely informed Bev that I was uncomfortable with having them as a moderator for the Beverage Zine, and they accepted my decision.
As of this current moment in time, I have claimed ownership of the project Twitter and email, changed the passwords, and said my farewells to Bev, wishing them the best.
Like I previously stated, I am still very much interested in this project despite the bumps that came along the way in early conception. I am eager to see it come to life, as I am sure many of you do too.
However, I am currently handling too many other zines and real-life issues at the moment to consider tackling another major one such as this right away. This is why I will be postponing the project until middle to late spring, once I have completed all of my other obligations.
I know that the deadline for moderator applications was supposed to be open until January 30th, but I will, unfortunately, have to turn off the form for now, as none of the applications will get looked at any time soon. I will be personally emailing the current applicants to apologize regarding this situation. I understand completely if they wish to retract their applications or if they no longer wish to invest in this project.
For those of you who would like to view conversations and as much photo proof of this incident as I could find, please click THIS LINK HERE.
In BLUE is myself, Tea. In GREEN is Wendy. In PINK is Bev. All other contacts/testimonials are in various other colors, each color depicting a different individual testifying to their experience with Bev or the other projects they have tried running.
Again, I want to stress to not witch hunt or to harass any of the involved parties. I don’t wish for anything terrible to befall anyone simply because I wanted to be transparent with this zine’s supporters and audience. I have stated the events as they have occurred to the best of my abilities, and if there are any inaccuracies in my account, it was not intentional and ultimately is the fault of no one but myself for not properly elaborating.
I sincerely apologize for this inconvenience and hope that you will stick with this project once it is revived. If you have any questions or concerns, please feel free to express them to me and I will do my best to address them.
Thank you for your time.

Hai!! I was wondering where you learn all of these meanings? I'm writing a story where the main character has Anthophobia and I would love to learn these meanings without having to ask about the flower arrangements every five pages 😂 I love what you guys are doing and I hope you have a wonderful day!
Hey darkllamafest,
sure can do, we’ve previously answered this question twice, once for each Mod. So here’s Mod Den’s answer and here’s the one I wrote. Mod Den’s answer also contains links to resources about Hanakotoba which is the Japanese flower language. Other than these two there also exists a Chinese flower language, and we’ve answered several asks about it. Your best bet right now would be our search bar for this, so you definitely catch all the asks. Or you just click on this link here. Edit: Not anymore, thanks to our updated tag system now this link to the Chinese flower language tag should be preferable.
And this right here is the Hanakotoba tag link.
There is also a German flower language, which rather works in small sentences than singular meanings, however, all sources are in the corresponding language. If you want to brave them anyway, go right here or over here on this page or maybe here too. It’s also my mother tongue so I can answer questions about it.
Same as German Spanish also (albeit not so common) has a flower language where all sources are exclusively in the root language, it is also largely influenced by the Victorian flower language so a lot of meanings are the same or quite similar. I know just enough of this language to brave it with a dictionary, but if you want to brave a couple sources try this link or this one here.
But even there is no corresponding flower language like we know it, flowers often have a corresponding cultural meaning like the flower above the ear custom in Hawaii or here’s a link about Day of the Dead flowers and their meanings.
I think your best bet would be to consider which cultures and languages your character might come in contact with on a daily basis and do research in that direction. Flowers have been given meanings for thousands of years, and there is always a chance something carried through. Here’s also an ask which we answered about the origin of flower meanings.
And at last, to answer the age-old question do florists know the meaning of flowers? Go here.

Season 2 Key Visual
Hanakotoba Analysis
Tumblr media
In the first key visual for season 2 of the donghua, Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang are pictured alongside what seems to be pink periwinkle and spiderwort flowers. The spiderwort (Tradescantia) is also called the dayflower and is known as zǐ wànniánqīng shǔ (紫万年青属) in Chinese and the shirokusa (紫露草) in Japanese. The spiderwort flower is associated with immortality, optimism, and moral authority in English floriography because of its evergreen foliage and lasting flowers. Its hanakotoba meaning is platonic respect. In China, the spiderwort flower symbolises longevity and good luck. It is also utilised in pain-relieving medicine used to treat diseases. Conversely, the spiderwort flower can also symbolise transient happiness. The periwinkle (Catharanthus roseus) is also known as the Madagascar periwinkle, Cape periwinkle, or Rose periwinkle. The periwinkle is known as chángchūnhuā (长春花) in Chinese and nichiodoriji kusa (日々草) in Japanese. The periwinkle symbolises faith, trust, everlasting love, and purity in English floriography. This flower is associated with admiration, appreciation, new beginnings, and friendships. Periwinkles can also symbolise tender recollections and sweet or pleasing remembrances. Its hanakotoba meaning is pleasant memories. In China, periwinkles love, passion, nurturing and warmth. Memories and human relationships are a central part of Link Click as Cheng Xiaoshi and Lu Guang co-own a shop called the Time Photo Studio where they use their powers that let them jump into photographs, live the events of the picture, and resolve past regrets. The deep friendship between its main cast is another central theme in Link Click especially the great lengths Lu Guang and Cheng Xiaoshi are willing to go through to ensure the other’s safety and happiness. This ties in well with the periwinkle’s meanings of tender recollections, sweet or pleasing remembrances, friendships, and new beginnings. Every time they jump into a photo, they risk changing the past which has ultimately resulted in dire consequences for them both interrupting their halcyon blissful lives and trapping them in a seemingly endless cycle of loss. This ties in well with the spiderwort flower’s contradictory meanings of longevity and transient happiness.

Shiguang Dailiren 《Link Click 》 Hanakotoba Analysis Additional Revisions
Given recent revelations in the newly released episode 24, I have decided to revisit this topic to add some additional information now that we have some more context into Lu Guang's actions and thoughts. So, if you haven't seen it already, please click on the link provided here.

⚠️Warning! Spoilers for Link Click Episode 24/Season 2 Episode 12!⚠️
The forget-me-not not only serves as a powerful symbol of the ties that bind loved ones together but also of the enduring power of love and memories. The forget-me-not is also said to be a symbol of hope and continuity as it is resilient and blooms even under challenging conditions. This flower thus additionally symbolises staying true to oneself.  The final episode of season 2 revealed that Lu Guang comes from a different timeline where Cheng Xiaoshi has died. Cheng Xiaoshi’s death caused Lu Guang to break their rules without hesitation.  He lives likely constantly haunted by the memory of Cheng Xiaoshi’s death, despite the latter being alive alongside him in the present moment, while actively trying to prevent his death. The incredible lengths Lu Guang is able to go through for Cheng Xiaoshi ties into the forget-me-not’s meanings of remembrance, enduring love, faithfulness, fidelity, and friendship.  Additionally, the forget-me-not’s resiliency and meanings of hope, continuity, and staying true to oneself greatly complement Lu Guang’s dedication and commitment to altering fate. The statice flower’s meanings of “unchanging heart, uninterrupted memory, and eternal immutability” parallel Lu Guang’s unwavering dedication and perseverance in saving Cheng Xiaoshi no matter the consequences of changing the past well.
