Has Anyone Else Noticed...?

Maybe it's just me, but I've kinda noticed an attitude developing on Tumblr that motive is everything and good motive must result it good results. I mean, motive matters, absolutely. However, there seems to be this attitude that if you make a joke or do something to try and be helpful or something like that, and someone responds by getting irritated or offended, they are absolutely in the wrong. How dare they not laugh at your joke? How dare they not be gushingly grateful about your help or doubt your expertise? Clearly, there is something wrong with them and they should apologize to you.

I'm sure I'm guilty of some of this myself, although having spent most of my life in various situations where if I make someone upset, I have to apologize, and if someone makes me upset, I have to apologize, I'm probably more likely to go "Right. Right. So sorry, I will try to never do that again, my bad. Very wrong of me to have been born, let me go flog myself." Still, humans in a culture will reflect that culture.

The thing is, good motivation does not erase all margin for error. The fact you were making a joke does not mean the other party won't find the joke funny, even if they did understand it. The fact you were trying to be helpful doesn't mean you were, especially if your help was not asked for. Generally I see this crop up with people who are absolute, perfect strangers. It's like people go "Oh, I've never talked to you in my life? I'll treat you like I do my besties anyway!" and then get all sorts of offended and butt hurt when this new person, with culture and life experience completely unknown to you, does not reply like your actual besties.

And it's difficult not to be casual on this site. All sorts of difficult. Everything about it is designed to make things feel communal and familiar. The concept of 'mutuals'. The ability to see entire conversations. The encouragement to put increasingly personal information in your header. (No you do not need to know my age, pronouns, or social security number, thank you!) The barrage of posts like "I love how everyone on the internet speaks sarcasm!" even though sarcasm doesn't always translate well through text and there are gobs of people out there who just...don't get it. It's so all pervasive that even if you know, you forget. I know, because I know I'm guilty of this one.

But if you are approaching an absolute stranger - not a mutual, not someone you've had conversations with, not someone you know from somewhere else - they are still a stranger, you are the one engaging them, and it's really not reasonable to assume they're going to respond well to your 'friendly' cues. I mean, it's not reasonable in real life, but it's even less so on the internet. It's the 'world wide web' after all, and what's polite in your culture might be all kinds of rude in theirs. Add to that you don't know what they're dealing with in RL, what their mental connotation of certain words is, any pet peeves, and yeah. You might not actually be the saint you think you are, and it might, in fact, be best if you apologize...or at least don't reply and give the cranky person some space.

Because demanding an apology for their "fucking unbelievable behavior" is probably not going to go over well either.

Hi bestie! 💖 Thank you!! 🙂 I'm thinking hat+ face mask may be a better way of doing anonymous selfies than cropping out half of my face lol (definitely easier than trying to crop pictures, especially if my face is at a weird angle). Realistically, I'm probably just not good enough with make up to smooth out that jawline (I'd probably need hrt for that), or maybe people just need to see the windows to my soul lol 😂 For the sake of my self esteem, I'm gonna say it's the pretty brown eyes and not the mask that made that selfie a little better than some of my recent ones.

I actually think tumblr provides a pretty healthy reprieve from a lot of the craziness in my day to day life. In general, I think getting away from social media can be healthy for people a lot of times, but I don't really use a lot of social media (this is basically the only one), and it's my real life that causes stress and anxiety, so I think this is a pretty healthy escape I shouldn't neglect when I get stressed tbh.

And yeah, that's a good example of how work can be an entirely different experience when you take away the hierarchies and coercive elements. You and your friends (comrades, if you will) working as a team towards a common goal is a very different experience from fulfilling your contractual obligations to your capitalist boss so you can have enough money for food and shelter. Remember, you and your coworkers don't need the bosses to do your job- they need you. 💖

Introduction

Hello, I’m not exactly sure how this works, and I’m almost positive no one is gonna read this ever but since I’m just starting out, I figured it best to introduce myself :)

Wow who knew talking about yourself on the internet was scary, interesting. I guess I’m just gonna answer questions I think people would want to know

whats the point of this blog?

ok so basically for the zero(0) people reading this, I am an extremely sheltered 17 year old who has never had a tumblr before, but I have always wanted one so since I have a lot of interests and few friends I decided to collect them all in one place so thats why I made this (also it’s my own tiny personal teenage rebellion) So really its just for fun and to meet cool kids on the internet :)

Interests? What interests?

honestly I have so many and I’m always open to suggestions. A few of my favorites are Brooklyn Nine-Nine, Marvel, the Sciences (especially chemistry), comedy (performing, watching, and writing), art ( I can’t draw for shit but I love watching other people create art), and EVERY BOOK EVER (genuinely though I will read anything) {anything I missed will eventually crop up, along with other stuff I discover)

Views on life/religion

ummmmmm well i grew up in a very conservative family but personally I lean more liberal. I like to say I’m an existentialist but I am still figuring a lot of it out. as far as religion goes, I still attend church but I don’t really believe in a deity so I guess I’m kinda agnostic, but who Knows :)

Goals?

I want to double major in Biochemistry and Biotechnology in college and get a masters in Biotech and a doctorate in Biochem. I want to focus mainly in carcinogens but I wouldn’t mind dabbling in genetic modification research. Honestly whatever I do I want to go somewhere far away

Relationships?

Like it says in my bio I’m ace but i’m bi romantic, however I haven’t actually dated anyone, but there is someone i’m interested in at the moment. As for platonic ones, basically I keep like randomly adopting people. My best friend is a mom friend by nature and I’m a dad friend by nature so it works well. We pick up people who seem lonely or bored with life and we adopt them and I convince them to live life to the fullest and have adventures, then my bestie makes sure to keep everyone safe, loved and ensures we are all responsibly thinking of our futures. Its pretty nice, I get to have a very intense empathy for others without necessarily having to be responsible. As for inter-web friends I would really like to meet new people and develop relationships and stuff but just Know that I will probably still act like a dad friend

Personal Flaws?(just kidding I’m perfect)

I included this in an attempt to give some clarity as why I am such a mess to the zero(0) people looking at this. Ummm well I procrastinate super bad, I use the Number(#) format because it genuinely makes me laugh, I way overuse this ‘:)’ emoticon, I have zero(0) grammatical or spelling skills despite being in AP English (including, but not limited to, random capitalization, a writing style similar to Oscar Wilde, random parenthetical interruptions, and overuse of filler words like umm). I have ADHD (couldn’t tell could you?), anxiety, autonomic dysfunction, and Dyscalculia (number Dyslexia). Those last ones aren’t flaws but they are irksome
