This is my "behind the scenes" series where I indulge myself horribly by annotating my fics.

I haven't figured out the best way to cover multi-chapter fics, especially behemoths like Nature and Nurture or The Return, so this is a test. I'll start with chapter one and reblog with additions for each chapter, I think. If there's a better way, please send suggestions.

Chapter One

My very first fic ever. I got obsessed with reading fic for a few months (thanks to @audreycritter's Cor Et Cerebrum and @unpretty's Sorrowful and Immaculate Hearts, and finally needed a little bit of output to balance out the input. It wasn't really planned, which is why my name is what it is. I'd made the lurker account to do just that and nothing more. Which feels a little silly now, five years and almost 100 fics later. 😬

The title comes from the Ryan Higgins picture book, because titles are harrrrrrd.

I think this is my only fic with chapter names, other than The Return.

He knew how it felt--that teeth-rattling, rib-crushing, pulse-racing sensation--and he knew how to push through it.

You see? You see how new I was at this? I hadn't even looked up the em-dash shortcut yet.

"And I don’t care if Arthur Pennypacker says gelato contains the required daily serving of calcium. Alfred will not let you survive on gelato alone.”

I am going to try very hard to be proud of this, my little baby fic, and not critical, but it's going to be very difficult when I clearly had to pluck a name out of thin air and ended up with Arthur Pennypacker being discussed in the same scene where Alfred Pennyworth exists. Yeesh.

"Art’s the fathead that stole Eddie’s gym shorts and ran them up the Academy flagpole.”

I wrote a joke poem about this kind of scenario for school once and it got published as part of a contest. Reduce reuse recycle.

The grin was still there, a bright smile full of pleasantly crooked teeth that leaned into each other like birds in a winter wind, but the corner of Jason’s mouth twisted hesitantly.

If I were doing this again, I'd make Jason a little less golly gee mister in tone, but at least he's precious.

Jason had always been gifted at picking up the scent of unease. Dick, Bruce’s outgoing ward, could read emotions. Jason could read tells.

Now that's clever, if I do say so myself. Good job, Amateur Me.

Jason dropped his spoon back in the empty gelato cup and ran his fingers over the stitching of the baseball on the table.

I reference that ball later in another fic and for the life of me right now I can't remember which one. Ah well. Put a pin in this. You'll see it again.

I thought I was gonna miss it for sure! And then after, Raul Huezo right there in front’a me! Just like, pshew! Did’ja see Bruce?

Raul Huezo was a spoof on a real-life baseball player... and I no longer remember who. Pity.

For a moment, all was still. Bruce had stopped breathing entirely, and it felt like Jason had as well. Bruce gripped Jason tightly, struggling to keep the preteen from falling out of his precarious half-perch on Bruce’s lap and onto the floor. But Jason was clutching Bruce just as tightly, gangly arms wrapped around Bruce’s neck and face pressed into Bruce’s chest. Tentatively, Bruce lowered his face to Jason’s hair and breathed in the smell of shampoo, sweat, and ballfield.

Hitting post on this very first chapter was terrifying but everyone was awfully nice. And it's so fun to look back and realize @cdelphiki was my very first commenter ever. Like hey! I know that name!

i reblog material for my book and also just for the sake of knowledge without only reblogging the things i 100% agree with, so if you glance at my blog you may assume the worst. though a quick read on my pinned post could've told you otherwise. i try to engage, bring up compromises, trying to finally end the radfem-trans war. bc both trans people and radfeminism ain't going nowhere. and radfeminism has a loooong powerful history for afab rights and women's rights and it goes directly against capitalistic girlboss pop feminism in a very empowering way, which we 1000% need right now

and actually, more and more transmasc and transfem people are becoming tirfs too! because 1. transmasc ppl are afab and were actually always included in radfeminism, though rampant misgendering kept them away til now; but now more and more radfems are willing to use more respectful language like afab/amab instead of female/male in discussions and making sure not to misgender anyone unnecessarily or be generally rude

and 2. transfem people are noticing afabmisogyny in leftist spaces and want to finally acknowledge their amab privilege, however complex it may be; they may be disprivileged on the axis of transmisogyny, but they are ALSO privileged on the basis of not being afab, of not having gone through a traumatic afab upbringing, and not having issues like period tax, abortion rights, pregnancy, afab genital mutilation, lack of research into afab health, and of course amab penis-on-vagina violence. the grand majority of transfemmes haven't had bottom surgery according to stats i've found, and thus do not know the experience of having a completely afab-typical body. and they have the power to experience intense genital pleasure from penetrating someone, unlike afab folks (even those with bottom surgery, i'd argue) which puts anyone able to be penetrated at risk if the person with a dick wants pleasure badly enough, especially people with vaginas whom the majority of dick-having people are attracted to, and often have the ability to impregnate as well. that is a power imbalance, you simply cannot argue otherwise imo

transmisogyny is real. but so is afabmisogyny. that's the root of why "transandrophobia" is becoming a popular term in transmasc spaces, though shamed heavily. afab rights matter. radfeminism has fought for specifically afab rights for years and years, and i believe it can be made trans-friendly. trans people are jumping on the wagon too. transfem folks can also care about afab rights, and want to be good allies to cis women & transmascs!

instead of giving up and leaving radical feminism to people who view trans folks in bad faith and painting it all as inherently evil, why not rejoin it and learn about it and carve out a space for trans voices? what if people had abandoned other social justice movements bc a harmful subcategory formed? that's giving into harmful rhetoric, giving into bigots. i ain't a coward. i'm detrans, i have lived as trans since i was 12 up until last year, i came out and faced transphobia, i legally changed my name, i have annoying af hrt stubble, i have beloved trans friends who i'd fight for anyday of the week. radfems and gender critical folks aren't an inevitable enemy. there's dipshits, sure, lots of them. but it's not cursed grounds. you can pour fertilizer on it and regrow a healthier, more trans-friendly movement

A discussion about carrying in transformers rescue bots fanfiction.

I know this is gonna be a long post, and I’m so sorry. But I kept getting ticked off and needed to tell someone who would listen about this. So, i’m reading a fantastic 2020 rescue november on a03. (I’ll dm you the author if anyone wants it.) and there’s a bladewave carrying fic in it. The premise of it is that Blades wants time-off because his sparkling is gonna come soon and Heatwave finds out about it that way and gets so happy that they’re gonna be a family. It’s all cute fluff right? My stupid ass thought that Heatwave was the one carrying, and then I realized it was blades. Not heatwave. I have read way too many rescue bots/rescue bots academy fanfiction, and I have noticed a pattern. When there is the term carrying involved, the authors (no shade to them some of the fics are amazing.) always pin the role of ‘carrier’ to the cuter smaller bot, not the ‘big strong brave mech’. It happens everytime. Now I ranted to my friend on discord about it (here’s the screenshot)

My point is, I’m plain tired of the ‘big stronger brave mech’ never carrying. The possibilities, the situations. It would be amazing, but alias they always pick Blades, or chase, and I have only seen one of these; Quickshadow. C’mon. Put the role of carrying on heatwave, or boulder. Don’t be a coward. Give heatwave carrying roles. me, oh I always pictured him a mother hen to the recruits, it makes perfect sense. heatwave is the one that is around them the most, it’s adorable. Most would describe him as a dad. Unpopular opinion but I see him as the overprotective mother hen that would protect his kids with his spark. Survivor: A Burning End

The sunlight was increasingly bright. Searing his eyelids. Even in closing his eyes there was still a blaring orange. He took a heavy breath, feeling pain in his side. He was sure he was laying against a solid surface, though feeling his shoulder hanging.

"Keep an eye out! We want to make sure the job got done properly." He heard him shout from the air.

Viggo forced his eyes to stay open, even if the sunlight caused him to squint. There was the urge to run coursing through him, but his body wasn't fulfilling the command. Wanting to stay still, reminding him of the other weight keeping him pinned. Sure, it would take a good effort to push away what had collapsed over him, but that would mean exposure.

Besides, being trapped in rubble was inevitable. That had been their strategy, explosion after explosion, devastation forcing them back. He'd retreated, presuming they would have thought Hunter Isle being the last place standing.

There was a sudden shuffle some ways to his left. He found strength enough to stiffen. And the slight movement must have been enough, because a dragon screech followed some seconds later. He recognized what it meant. There's someone there. The few shadows the fallen debris provided was taken away, and his hand began to slide behind his waist.

"Look where the coward has fallen. Oh but look Toothless, at least he's alive. Not like the rest of his men."

"It had to be you." He said in an exhausted whisper.

"And you're not looking so good." Hiccup responded.

"No, but that's what you wanted. This much destruction, to prevent anyone fighting back."

"Well it was a better alternative to what you wanted. Us struck down from the sky in an inferno, or impaled with arrows." He withdrew his sword. "We struck first."

"It was simply, business."

“Tell me Viggo. Your armies are fallen. You might be the last standing.”

“You can’t be sure of that-”

“That’s what my friends are looking for. How will the leader of the Dragon Hunters proceed?”

His fingers found the hilt as he saw Hiccup approach wielding his own weapon. A sword he knew held the ability to be lit aflame. A worthy weapon of his adversary, but he wasn't appreciating of where it could be embedded.

"You found the other base." He ground out.

"You abandoned your former stronghold. But dormancy was far too out of the question. Both of us were preparing to end this."

"It seems like you've won, doesn't it."

"It really does." Hiccup looked animatedly around the burning wreckage, his eyes easing shut and grinning as the cries of freed dragons pierced the sky. "But you're still breathing. Toothless and I didn't have the luxury of finding your charred corpse. No," The sword neared Viggo's throat, "we get you still capable of acting like you have the upper hand."

Viggo's eyes gazed at the sword, then they flicked back up to Hiccup.

"Do you wish it would have killed me?"

"Now you've left me with a dilemma. You know this wasn't your only base to fall, and how many Hunters you've lost. Perhaps the ones who've fled. We've reached this point of the game, Viggo. The Viking King is the one who has to give the final command to strike down his opponent. When he's sacrificed so many of his people for his own self-preservation."

Then he glanced slyly backward. Looking to the sky, then eyes skimming their surroundings. His head slowly eased back to watch the lying victim, and with a click of the hilt, the sword ignited.

"They don't have to know I found you like this." He said lowly.

Viggo had pressed his head back. Able to feel the heat of the flame inches from the skin of his face. The wooden remains he had been leaning against creaking from the pressure. If the sword was this close, there wasn't a point in begging for mercy. Yes he knew. Knew how many ships had fallen, how efforts to regain supplies had also been interrupted. Figured out too late how the Riders' decimation had been to close in on him.

And in this final stroke, a flamed sword in the hand of a teenager preparing to deliver a searing end.

How I'd Make Tumblr More Profitable

Yes, this is going to be controversial, since I know nothing about the behind-the-scenes spending, economics, and all that jazz. But I've been on Tumblr for long enough to have a rough idea of the userbase wants - which is what positions Tumblr in a niche other sites don't really utilize. Most of the points I list here are about improving the experience of existing users, as keeping users might be harder for tumblr than attracting new ones.

Please note that this posts reflects my personal opinions and some stuff I've seen people complain about it. Do not attack me over anything I've written here, it's not worth my time and I will resort to blocking if I'm being bothered. Constructive criticism is fine and encouraged!

Features to Add

Block posts. Xkit has/had this feature, it was great. Sometimes I just don't want to see a specific post, and others probably agree with that.

Send asks and replies from sideblogs. Would literally make a lot of things easier and better.

Delete individual reblog additions from a post. Sometimes, you have a post where there is one"relevant" addition, multiple "irrelevant" additions ("yes!", "[repeated phrase in bold]", "this is a must reblog"), before there is a "relevant" addition again. But right now, you can only remove all reblog additions, not just individual ones. I feel like this would be a neat feature.

Direct blocking of anon hate which also tracks the IP and blocks the associated account(s). No rights for cowards, that's all I'll say.

Features to Bring Back

Reblog chains. Prev tags are the backbone of lots of interactions on here. If I click on someone's username in a reblog chain, I want to see that post on their blog, not their blog starting from the newest post. The loss of this feature is one of the things people constantly complain about in the replies of @changes.

Several text formatting options. As a theme maker, it would be nice to have proper preformatted text again - it makes code so much more legible. Other formatting options I miss are marked/highlighted text and text lines, which are really helpful to visually break apart passages of text.

Features to Ditch

Tumblr Live. There I've said it. If I want to see stuff like that, I have TikTok, IG Reels, Pinterest Reels, and YouTube Shorts. Twitter also has something like this. It's oversaturated, and aparently there are still enough cyber security concerns that it's not even accessible outside of the US and Canada.

Ads in lightboxes. Especially on mobile, there are already more than enough ads on the feed, no need to add more nested inside other elements.

Features that Make Money

Pay for NSFW. If this site allowed full nudity etc. again but hid it behind a paywall, we'd kill two birds with one stone: The site would probably still be allowed on the App Store, and the money influx would be huge. The userbase would also increase again.

(If Tumblr Live is kept.) Pay to snooze Tumblr Live permanently. It's the most complained about thing in changes' replies, so I feel like people would pay on a subscription base just to not see TL anymore.

Pay to increase limits. 250 posts per day is the maximum that can be posted - and there are people hitting those limits. If there was an option to buy a higher limit (500p/d, 750p/d, etc.), people might generally use it. Like those add-on charges for mobile data. Same goes for posts in the queue, posts in drafts, images in a photoset and so on.

Pay to pin posts at the top of a tag or search result. Ebay Kleinanzeigen has this neat feature where you can push your small ads to the top of a search query so that more people can see it. This could be a cool feature to try, as it would work in a more content-aware way than Blaze does.

Pay to buy inactive URLs. There are some really cool usernames on here that are taken by blogs that haven't updated for 5+ years and only have one post (or none at all), and I feel like it would be neat to be able to buy one of these cool usernames attached to an empty account. To make sure that usernames attached to redirect or something else don't get bought, tumblr should send an e-mail to the username owner - if the user doesn't react to that for 3 months, the usernames changed owners. [added 13th July 2023]

Existing Features to Improve

NPF posts. I feel like a combination of legacy and NPF would be neat. Think selecting a main element like in the legacy editor (e.g. video, image, audio) and then adding a caption that can add different content types like NPF does. Or at least create a better overview over NPF variables and release the full base code with documentation to make things easier for the web designers on here. There are more issues with the NPF format but I won't list everything people dislike about it here.

Block people. The block feature should make sure that the person being blocked doesn't see any posts made by the person they were blocked by, even if those posts were reblogged by another user. Also, like IG does, there should be an option to block either just a specific blog or the IP address attached to block side-blogs and other accounts of that user.

Color palettes. The color palette options for the dashboard are generally a nice idea but I think it would be better if there was a dropdown menu to choose a palette from rather than having to click through all the different options. For example, if I want to go from Cement (light mode) to Dark mode, I have to click through 10 options until I reach Dark again. There has to be an easier way. [added 20th July 2023]

Other Improvements Needed

Nuke spam bots. Users are reporting all the spam bots, yet, it doesn't seem like they are dwindling in numbers. Also - at least this is how it's being perceived by the userbase - tumblr isn't doing enough on their end to reduce spam bots. This is definitely something that needs to be fixed.

End hateful and criminal activities. It's the year 2023, yet there are still outright N*zis, violent tr*nsphobes, literal p*dophiles, and other people committing to the daily bit of hate speech and other illegal activities (fraud too considering all those fake GoFundMe sites) on this website. I'm not saying free speech should be banned but there is a bright red line between what is free spech and what is hate speech (or should get you jailed considering fraud and p*dophilia).

A through-out, perhaps even interactive, beginner tutorial. "The site is too complicated to use for new users!" – then explain how it works in easy terms, with examples, images, and videos. Every other application or web app has walk-throughs, just do the same here.

Improved ad relevancy. The ads I see on tumblr are usually so out-of touch with the userbase, and many of them feel like the sort of stuff you see on a spam-ridden torrenting site. I feel like increasing the relevancy of ads to what the users usually blog about would cause a higher click-rate and turn-over-rate than the current ads do.

Summary

There is probably more I could add, but that's it for now. Should I make any later additions directly to this post, I will mention it to prevent misunderstandings. If you have any ideas or constructive criticism, let me hear about it in the replies or reblogs of this post.

For the longest time…

I’ve come across reblogs of TheGrandHorizontal’s tumblr posts on other tumblr’s pages and in doing so, was continually reminded that I, for some reason, got blocked…

And for the longest time, I’ve asked myself WHY..?

And for some reason, it has eaten at me like a parasite chewing on my flesh… Mainly because I couldn’t figure out what I did to be shut out in such a premeditated way…

You present yourself as though you’re some great curator of an online museum, wherein the truth is, all you’ve done is taken other (more interesting) people’s works of art (like EVERYBODY else does and has, since the beginning of the internet) and posted them as though you’re some amazing professor of art history that’s due all the credit…

But you’ve done so in a most ungracious way, you pompous pile of platitudinous purloining puss.

Hi, guys, could you please send a report on this bot? It keeps writing me threats and offensive things

Long story short, I drew a hetalia comic with China and Belarus based on a specific situation - and some people went into hysterics because I drew China with "too narrow eyes," which reminded of caricatures on Chinese people. I was really surprised because I had never seen such caricatures before, so I never associated it with evil, so I told that. It could have been that I chose the wrong words because people went mad and started calling me racist.

Some time before that incident, I was friends with an artist called peonycats. At least, I thought so because she was sending me private messages about what I should have redacted in my content. However, she didn't interact with me in any other way, which I found weird but okay.

The day people went mad on me because of China comic, peonycats reblogged it with others' nasty comments and expressed her disappointment. I felt a bit betrayed because she could have messaged me like always and told me, "Please do this and that because..." but that time, she decided to join the crowd. I reblogged her comment and added more explanation - but I got zero reaction from her.

However, I started receiving death and rape threats instead because peonycats is quite a popular artist. Thus, I decided to block her, not out of emotions, simply because more people started attacking me because of her.

The next day after I blocked her, I woke up and saw a message from my mutual. It was a screen of peonycats answering to some anon doxing me.

And that time, I got angry at peonycats. You see, between her reblog of my comic and the doxing post, some time had passed - and during that time, no one doxed me. People were already mad at me, but no one doxed me! It looked weird: like if peonycats got offended that I blocked her, herself went to my profile from her second account, scrolled through my blog, and even translated my Ukrainian post. I can't see what other motivation she could have had in posting literal doxing of someone with whom she had good relations in private, in case if that doxing anon was someone else.

So yeah, I got quite furious, and I published screens of our conversation, which you can see in my pinned post. I can handle angry people, but I really REALLY dislike meanness. I believe that no matter how shitty someone's opinion on something is - doxing them makes you even worse.

Sorry, I said "long story short," but it turns out to be quite a long story. XD I added some explanations to posts that were doxed, so you can search "terf" and "Muslim" in my profile and read them. You can still disagree with me, though, but I hope it will be clearer at least.

Some time after I posted screens of my conversations with peonycats, a person named lilayofthewallay wrote me. And the conversation with them... They tried to manipulate me, at first using my conscience, and when it failed, using the war in my country. Eventually, that person called me a shithead, which allowed me to suggest lilayofthewallay and the doxing anon was the same person (no one else used the shithead insult towards me). Since I can't imagine anyone doing such a brave thing for peonycats because all her friends were cowards to send me anon hate asks, I supposed lilayofthewallay, the doxing anon AND peonycats is the same person. But it's only my assumptions.

In conclusion, I want peonycats never ever to interact with me again.

ugh ohmygod so I saw this post and it made me so mad that I simultaneously wanted to reblog it just to rant in the tags and to not reblog it so that I could avoid sharing it with /more/ people

listen. music is universal. when a singer, songwriter, producer, lyricist, musician, team puts something out into the world, there may be emotions that they are trying to put into it. They will draw on these emotions as they perform and edit and refine this thing they are making. There may be a story they are trying to tell, an experience they are trying to communicate, and this may not be straightforward; there is a level of abstraction between conceptualization and realization that I am convinced exists to some level in all pieces of art like this. This is not a flaw; this is marvellous. When I the listener interact with a song, or an album, or an artist's entire body of work - the emotions that I feel and the story that is conveyed to me may be just. absolutely different from the artist's intentions and their own experience. It may resonate with me in an entirely different way than intended; it may resonate with someone else in a separate, distinct, discrete way. My and others' awareness of the artist and any context they have made clear may play a part in this or it may not; it depends on how I interact with music and how readily available this information is.

All this is to say: the only fucked up thing with this whole gaylor shit is the part where people are convinced that their interpretation of her music and the way it resonates with them indicates some fundamental truth about her identity. The only person who knows that is her and frankly it's none of anyone else's business and it's probably not that interesting anyway. But!!! this does not mean that her music cannot resonate with someone's experience of queerness!!!! It is story and song and a vehicle for emotion, and the details that make something sing true to someone's life and values are not pinned to the artist's "true identity" like a fuckin. butterfly to a corkboard. there is VALUE and DELIGHT in being aware of some additional dimension of queerness by virtue of the singers intentions or identity or whatever but that's a fucking BONUS you NIMRODS the only thing you need is a heart to feel things and a song to feel them about it's about YOU and how you interpret things. you change things just by existing!!! the only person to experience a song the way you do is YOU!!! "if I wanna listen to gay music I'll listen to gay ppl singing about gay sex" good for you!! but what a sad and limited life you must lead to need the significance and meaning of art spoonfed to you by author bios.

AND THEN. fucking condescending ass AAAAAAAH listen. christian rock can slap. i say this as someone who is markedly not christian. and even if you don't think it slaps that's fine. but the fact that someone's out here going "oh poor limited babies who've never listened to real proper good music before projecting sasanaru onto christian rock because they've never known anything else" grow uppppp!!! first of all!!! nobody. It’s WIP Wednesday, time for a little accountability, sharing your work, and getting a kick in the pants.

Here’s how it works:

In a reblog of this post (so people can find you in the notes) or new thread (w/ rules attached) if you want to play on your own, post up to five (5) filenames of your WIPs; not titles, file names.

Post a snippet from one of them. Snippet must be words you wrote in the last 7 days. We’re posting progress here. If you haven’t made any, go make some and come back to play!

"Exactly. It's practically an admission of guilt."

As soon as Henriksen said that, Jean’s vision went red. “Fuck you,” he growled. “Don't fucking talk about him like that.”

Henriksen’s smile faltered.

“You're fucking cowards who want to take the easy way out. This is and always has been Tetsuji Moriyama. Don't you dare pin all our suffering on Riko, because he suffered too. When Kevin left The Nest, Riko didn't fully regain consciousness for three days," Jean spat. "He was punished just like the rest of us, except he punished himself too. Didn't you ever notice how Riko was also absent from the public eye after Kevin's 'accident'? Or, hell, how he was absent after mine?" he continued, his voice growing more frantic and increasing in volume with each question. "Tetsuji fucking Moriyama destroyed any chance Riko had to have a life outside of The Nest. Riko knew that he'd never been wanted. Riko knew that the only value The Master saw in him was as an investment, and that his life literally depended on how much that investment earned him. So if you want to have your careers considered anything other than pathetic failures, you'll get your heads out of your asses and focus on the real villain of this story. Stop letting the Moriyama name make you two its bitches and do your jobs properly."

The room was silent for a while.
