Why you should watch Story of Yanxi Palace
It seems ridiculous to do a promo post for literally the most-watched television show on the planet, but I follow a lot of accounts that post cdrama gifs, and I don't think I've ever seen a single Yanxi Palace gif, and that's a tragedy.
Story of Yanxi Palace is a 2018 period drama with 70 episodes, set in the harem of the real-life Qing Dynasty Qianlong Emperor and featuring some real-life events and characters from that period. Our heroine is Wei Yingluo, a teenager who enters the Forbidden City as a maid, seeking to solve and then avenge her sister's murder. It was a smash hit when it was released, although it was later censored. You can find it on Viki.
If you liked Nirvana in Fire, you will probably like Yanxi Palace: Wei Yingluo is very similar to Mei Changsu in all the best ways, in that she is devious, ruthless, occasionally very funny, driven by revenge, and possessed of a fundamental core of decency despite her scheming ways. She is also a fifteen-year-old girl. (At the beginning of the show, that is - the drama spans more than a decade.)
Wei Yingluo's relationship with the primary love interest, Fuca Fuheng, is also just *chef's kiss.* She suspects him of her sister's murder, tries to secretly off him a couple times, and he then confronts her about it and hands her a knife, saying, "If you really think I killed your sister, you can kill me now. I won't stop you." We've all seen this scene a dozen times in assorted movies and shows; she loves him so she can't bring herself to do it; she'll drop the knife, they'll embrace--
Reader, Wei Yingluo takes that knife and STABS HIM IN THE CHEST. She stabs him in the chest!!! How can you tell she likes him? Because he survives the experience. Barely.
After that, you think this is a Mei Changsu/Mu Nihuang pairing where there's a relatively normal person who loves their devious little meow meow--and then Fuheng turns around and gaslights Yingluo with zero remorse and you realize that this pairing is actually 100% deranged 4 deranged. The shit these two do to each other and for each other is completely unhinged. At one point, she kills his wife and the two of them never talk about it. Not before, not after, not ever. Legendary. He calls her his zhiji. They will convince you that the height of romance is marrying other people but knowing one another so deeply that you can coordinate intricate political schemes without ever communicating with each other because you can predict one another's moves with perfect accuracy.
Also, the costumes, sets, and props are ridiculously beautiful (and historically accurate!), the characters are like 20 incredibly intelligent and complex women and then like 4 hot dudes, and the score is incredible.
Is there queer rep, you ask? Nothing explicit. But there are a lot of female characters who have very intense, passionate relationships with other female characters. Also, there's a subplot where the Emperor suspects the Empress is having an affair with one of his consorts and you can see his point; finally, there's a character who is intentionally set up to have a very ambiguous sexual orientation: I think you could plausibly argue that he's ace, that he's bi, that he's gay, or that he's straight. I'm not sure even he knows.
There's a lot more to love about it, but when a show's been streamed more than 15 billion times (yes, with a b), I feel like I don't have too much to add. 馃槀 Give it a try!

Long Night Blog Updates.
Hello my beloved nerds. I hope everyone in the North is keeping warm and everyone in the South is keeping cool. Ianto and I have just had a very very cold week. We got down to -28C which google tells me is about -18f and we hung out there for about a week. Now we're back up to -11c which is much nicer.
I can't remember if I've posted about it here but I have been working on a gradschool application to the University Chicago department of Near Eastern Languages and Civilizations - Egyptology department. It was a bit of a last minute dash because I kinda forgot to look at the due dates. woops. But I got everything in and all my Letter of Recommendation requests out by 1 Dec - a full 2 weeks before my contributions were due.
The deadline for the LoRs was the 22nd. I got one LoR from a Classics professor, one from a Museologist, and one from and Egyptologist - in theory. The Egyptologist ended up not sending a letter in and between Christmas and New Years I will be sending her an email politely asking what went wrong because I could have substituted a different Egyptologist. I know a bunch of them.
If I get in, I'll know by the end of February. But because I am one LoR short, I likely won't get in. Which sucks. But, as it was a last minute application I don't actually expect to get in and it will be nice to be able to blame her instead of my own mistakes and gaps.
On the plus side, if I don't get in, I can take some time to apply for more than just this one program. Might try Leiden. I also made a terrible joke that if I wait long enough my cousin and my aunt can be two of my LoR writers. They have different last names from each other and me, so it wouldn't raise too many flags lol. Except I have nothing to do with medicine -aunt- and only tangential ties to historic musicology -cousin.
For now, Ianto and I are hanging out in Camel Town, and if my application is rejected, we have promised work here next year if we want to stay on. I am itching to move to a city again, but I live in a pretty good place for the money, and it will let me build up a 'war chest' of cash as well as other tools for my eventual PhD program.
I am a little bit bummed about the situation but there isn't much I can do about it.

I got this beautiful blanket out of my hope chest when it got cold. I have 3 quilts from my grandma, two like this, and one with beautiful pinwheels. Ianto is enjoying this one with me.

Chapter 3: Unexpected Challenge
Narrated by Vermillion.
~Content Warning: mild workplace abuse~
Narrator: It's three days to the New Year, and the preparation for every event is underway.
Narrator: After the press release, Helz plans to make acquaintances with some individual designers. As a good assistant, it naturally falls on me to scout ahead.
Narrator: I'm rounding the stairs, and what do I hear but that familiar, taunting voice.
Caroline: What's this supposed to be? Is it from your grandma's department store? The only place this color palette is going to is Cloud in a new year!
Narrator: Feeling the storm of Caroline's displeasure at her assistant's design from around the corner, I decide to hang back and wait for it to pass by.
Narrator: Out of the corner of my eyes, I see a young girl assistant hanging her head and slowly collecting sheets of paper scattered on the floor.
Caroline: All this time, and your taste hasn't improved one bit. The mix of red and white is a total nightmare.
Narrator: She has no right to say that about red and white!
Narrator: I dare not even breathe as I clutch the folder in my hands.
Assistant Girl: ...Actually, the inspiration for this color combo is from my...
Narrator: The girl tries to explain, but Caroline doesn't give her the chance.
Caroline: Fashion is to show one's identity and status, so it must be avant-garde enough to distance itself from others.
Caroline: If you turn something like this in again tomorrow, you're done.
Assistant Girl: ...I understand.
Narrator: Caroline walks off, leaving the girl behind. I hear her sobbing quietly.
Narrator: I approach, pick up a sheet from the ground that she dropped and hand it to her.
Vermillion Snow: Did you design this? It's pretty good. I like the red and white combo, too.
Vermillion Snow: I heard what she said to you. I'm a design student as well, and I liked your idea. Maybe we can talk sometime?
Vermillion Snow: As for what Caroline said, don't let it get to you. I don't agree with her, at least.
Vermillion Snow: The idea of using fashion only as a status symbol is just too utilitarian and impersonal for me.
Narrator: For a second, the assistant's grateful eyes meet mine, only to twist into shock as she stares past me.
Narrator: I turn around to find none other than Caroline standing behind me, imperiously impatient.
Caroline: What are you still doing here? Don't you know the next press conference has been moved up?
Narrator: The girl shudders from head to toe and sprints off with sketches in hand.
Narrator: After dismissing the girl, Caroline's focus shifts to me.
Caroline: Do not get in the way of my assistant's duties.
Vermillion Snow: ...I didn't get in her way.
Caroline: Did you take it upon yourself to teach her how to do her job, then?
Vermillion Snow: I...
Narrator: She notices my badge and smirks.
Caroline: Listen, little girl, you probably don't have the ear for advice from your betters, but here are the rules of this business.
Caroline: You do not have the right to point fingers at me, or my assistant.
Narrator: The acrimonious words echoed in my head, bouncing off the walls, infuriating me even more.
Choose "She's so condescending!"
You: She's so condescending! I would've lost it.
Narrator: I know, but I couldn't afford to get into an argument with her there.
Narrator: I had a job to do. What's more, I was a mere assistant, and she was a legend in the business.
Narrator: So I bite my tongue, and with all the politeness I could squeeze out of myself, I give her a nod.
Vermillion Snow: She's a designer, and so am I!
Vermillion Snow: One day, I'll beat her. I'll show her with my own work that only designs with heart and soul can truly move people!
Narrator: I tell Helz what happened. At first, he only shakes his head, but then his eyes light up.
Helz: How about you show her that at the cocktail?
Helz: If you get three letters of recommendation, you can go to the party as an indie designer, wear your own design, and show her what's what.
Narrator: I never imagined I would be able to attend the cocktail. After the surprise wears off, it's replaced by endless excitement.
Narrator: Three letters of recommendation... Helz starts me off with one. Then Sonya gladly provides another after learning about the incident. Just need one more.
Narrator: But what named designer would recommend me, an assistant?
Narrator: I stand in front of the hotel's floor-to-ceiling window and muse as the guests come and go.
Narrator: Lodden lies just beyond glass. It's bright, shining, and untouchable, just like cold fashion business in Caroline's world.
Narrator: Then, a waiter in a tuxedo delivers an unknown letter.
Letter of Recommendation: Heard you want to take Caroline on. I look forward to that.
Narrator: The letter isn't signed, though there's a Mercury Group seal in the bottom right.
Choose "The Mercury Group?"
You: Why would Mercury Group...?
Narrator: I don't know either, but there are many designers under the Mercury banner.
Narrator: Someone who didn't see eye to eye with Caroline probably got wind of it and decided to lend a hand.
Narrator: I felt the fire of hope light up in me once again.
Narrator: Just you wait, Caroline... I will prove to you that there's more than one way to good design.

How to Create an Impactful Recommendation Letter for Higher Studies?
Letter of Recommendation (LOR) for a student or individual who intends to study abroad is an important task. Whether you're a teacher, professor, employer, or mentor, your LOR can significantly impact the applicant's chances of admission. Here's a guide on how to write an effective LOR for someone pursuing studies abroad:
Request Information:
Ask the student or individual for whom you're writing the LOR to provide you with essential information, such as the application deadline, the name of the program or institution they're applying to, and any specific requirements or questions the LOR should address.
Understand the Candidate:
Get to know the candidate's academic and personal strengths, achievements, and goals. Discuss their motivations for studying abroad and what they hope to achieve.
Format and Structure:
Follow a standard LOR format, including the date, salutation, introduction, body, and conclusion. Use a professional tone and language throughout the letter.
Introduction:
Start with a formal salutation and introduce yourself, mentioning your position, qualifications, and your relationship with the applicant. State how long you have known the candidate and in what capacity.
Describe the Candidate's Qualities:
In the body of the letter, highlight the candidate's strengths, skills, and achievements. Provide specific examples and anecdotes that illustrate these qualities. Address academic abilities, work ethic, research skills, leadership, and any other relevant attributes. Discuss how the candidate stands out among their peers and any unique qualities they possess.
Discuss Their Academic Performance:
Detail the candidate's academic performance, such as GPA, coursework, research projects, and any honors or awards received.
Personal Attributes:
Describe the applicant's personal qualities, including their commitment, passion for learning, problem-solving skills, adaptability, and cultural sensitivity.
Relevance to the Program:
Explain why you believe the candidate is a good fit for the specific study abroad program or institution they are applying to. Mention any courses, research opportunities, or faculty members that align with the applicant's interests.
Address Weaknesses (if any):
If there are any weaknesses in the candidate's application, such as gaps in their academic record, you may briefly address them and explain any improvements or mitigating circumstances.
Conclusion:
Conclude by summarizing your endorsement of the candidate and your enthusiasm for their potential success abroad. Offer to provide further information if necessary and express your willingness to support the candidate's application in any way.
Signature and Contact Information:
Sign the letter and provide your contact information in case the admissions committee needs to reach out for additional information or verification.
Proofread and Edit:
Carefully proofread the LOR for grammar, spelling, and clarity. Ensure it meets the length and formatting requirements of the application.
Submission:
Submit the LOR as per the application instructions, either directly to the applicant or to the institution, as specified. Remember to be honest, specific, and enthusiastic in your recommendation. A well-written LOR can greatly strengthen an applicant's chances of being accepted for their study abroad program.

Letter Of Recommendation
A letter of recommendation, often referred to as a reference letter or simply a recommendation letter, is a document written by someone who knows you well and can vouch for your abilities, character, qualifications, or achievements. These letters are typically requested by individuals when applying for jobs, academic programs, scholarships, or other opportunities, and they serve as a means to provide additional information about the applicant beyond what is available in their resume or application.

Hiya. Regarding your letter of recommendation post, I wanted to add that you should attend office hours more than once. I'm a biology professor and the only students I tend to remember long term are the one's I've had one-on-ones with. And those conversations are usually during office hours. Plus, it shows me that you are the sort of person who will show up. And showing up is 90% of success. I've just finished an AMCAS letter for a student who took one of my labs and I got to write about how well I knew this student from our one-on-ones. It's invaluable. We aren't scary and we won't bite. Most of the time, we're just happy to have an excuse to stop working on our own papers and what not. We didn't become educators because we hate students so please trust us just enough to meet us for office hours. It's painless!
Yes, absolutely, thank you for adding this! Show up to office hours even if you don't have a question about the class that you need help with. Professors are people too, and in my experience they've always been happy to have a conversation about pretty much anything.
I've also set up meetings with professors I've had in the past when I want their opinion on a current project. Learning from someone doesn't have to stop just because a class is over. Also, thank your professors at the end of a semester. This goes along with the theme of keeping in touch and being engaged.

Day One Hundred Forty-Two
Not every state has a system in which townspeople vote on their school district's operating budget, union contracts, etc... but New Hampshire does. Yesterday was voting day here, and the budget didn't pass, meaning we're left with a default budget (this year's budget plus any expenditures that are mandatory) that's about $1.2 million shorter than what the district had wanted. The admins say they're "exploring all options," but the likely outcome will be the closure of an elementary school.
The school board already voted to close one in the 2025-2026 school year, this just speeds it up by a year. There was much debate at the deliberative session about why we didn't just speed it up a year, so I assume that's what voters had in mind when they made this decision.
As you can imagine, it's causing a lot of emotions for parents, teachers, kids, etc... So that's rough.
It's not rough for me personally, though. I don't have kids, for one thing. And, as a high school teacher, my job is in no danger; plus, the high school may actually benefit because the paras, custodians, etc... at the elementary school can be transferred up here where we're desperately short-staffed. I'm not pointing that out to anybody who's upset, of course, because that'd be a jerk move. I'm just writing it here because, well, it is what it is.
Anyways.
Today was also an early release day, so some of my students didn't come to school (that's less of an issue than it used to be because the district's taken steps to address the importance of attendance, even for short classes, with parents, but it's definitely still an issue), and some of the students who were in attendance got a talking-to about utilizing the time as opposed to packing up ten minutes early and playing on their phones. It wasn't a super stern talking-to, just a gentle one, but I think it was effective because a lot of the students I spoke to returned to their seats and to their work. So that's a win.
It's a "B" day, so I was doing the same thing I did with the other half of my ninth graders yesterday. First, they took a content quiz, and then they either read or, if they'd finished their books, worked on their papers. My APGOV students also had a quiz- a vocab quiz- and then we played a rowdy game of Kahoot to prepare for their next test. We finished right at the bell, so some of my ninth graders got to witness the (very loud and jubilant) ending of that. That was fun.
We had a faculty meeting in the afternoon and worked on some curriculum mapping stuff in interdisciplinary groups, which wasn't bad. After that, I met quickly with my department to go over some information and get their nominees for our academic awards. That left us all with about 45 minutes of time to work on our own. So I did a bit of grading, wrote a scholarship recommendation letter, and then it was time to go!

Constantine has found an, as the colloquial term would be, easy mark.
He's just found out that the High Prince of the Infinite Realms is a freshly dead fourteen year old. And like, yeah, sucks that the kid died, he feels for him.
But also; the kid has a problem that's ridiculously easy to solve.
The American Government is trying to declare war on the realm that holds all universes together, and Constantine knows a few people who can bring that to light and get that shit shut down real fucking quick.
So he goes to Amity Park, to the little Prince's haunt so he can pin him down, help him out for "free", and work out a deal to call the American Government off.
Except the kid just wants him to do his stitches. Because the American Government wasn't bluffing, and has developed weapons that can and will harm the fabric of reality.
John does the kids stitches. They aren't very good, but they're the best he can do.
He sticks around.
He patches the little Prince up.
He...he gets attached.
He watches the GIW actually hurt the kid, seriously, to the extent that he actively steps in and gets himself labeled a terrorist by taking them out.
Now he's got an angry Big Three on the line, demanding to know what is going on, and he's realizing that he's a little past tricking a deal out of a kid that has too much power.
It's personal.
